- This sheep has been struck by blowflies, let's get the maggots off it and give it medication. This is a common problem on New Zealand farms that we deal with throughout the year. Let's make this sheep more comfortable by shearing off the maggots and applying a medication treatment.

@@ethnaleigh4488 Flystrike happens quickly. It can get to this level in just a few days. We do our best to be vigilant during the times of the year that flystrike occurs, and always treat the sheep right away. This year in our flock of 3000 sheep, about 30 were affected by flystrike.
@@ethnaleigh4488 No, it can happen quite quickly, especially in warm climates. All it really takes is a couple of fly bites or an open wound and flies get into the opened skin and lay eggs then BOOM, you have maggots. It's called "flystrike" and thank GOD it hasn't happened to my herd of sheep so far. As you can see, it's ugly to treat. This isn't often a case of farmer neglect. It's truly just one of the things that can plague sheep in a moment.

Seconded! I too would like to see longer videos, particularly the before and after as it is always nice to see an animal recover.
For those who wonder how injuries happen to livestock and not noticed right away the answers simple, many are in large pastures and eat grass and some grain at certain times,so the farmer may not see them every day,but at feeding time they look at the livestock for anything unusual and if found the animal is caught and treated, dairy cow are seen and milked every day so their injuries, illness are caught and treated alot sooner then beef cattle, hope this helps

I'm a dog groomer and last weekend had a New Finland come in for boarding and noticed a smell looked into poor baby's ears and OMG the maggots, I looked more and started shaving his ears and neck, I couldn't believe the amount of maggots, i swear probably 100,000.. I got a lice comb and was just scooping them off for about 2 hours after shaving him with 15 blade. I honestly couldn't even believe what happened next but owners took him home instead of vet, and jump on plane and went on vacation, dog died the next day. Broke my heart especially when we have dogs female partner with us now. Their both sweet gentle gaints, I been giving her extra love and care especially now cuz she knows something not right. I understand animals especially farm animals get infections and sick but to let one suffer with high fever infection and maggots like that is wrong in my book. Sorry for the rant, it just bothers me when owners of any kind of animal are neglectful. I keep thinking could I have done something differently but I know I did my best and hopefully made him comfortable in his last hours.
I have watched this about 5 times. Those maggots attacking that sheep is freaky. That's like when they attack dogs in Africa. I'm so glad that farmer is so caring with his livestock.

I dated a girl with maggots once. After i shaved her back, and sprayed iodine on her maggot patch, she dumped me..my love was in vain.

There must have been a wound there that attracted the maggots. I'm pretty sure maggots only eat rotting flesh. They even use them medically to treat large wounds.
Actually this breed of fly will lay eggs on a healthy sheep. When maggots eat living tissue it is called obligate myiasis. The adult Australian blowfly is very aggressive in its laying of eggs on the backs of sheep. The maggots start biting and form a wound which attracts even more flies.

Why was it left so long surely something could have been done much sooner. May not have made such a good vidio though. Terrible treatment of the sheep.
Sheep roam freely for most of the season. They're only rounded up and inspected for breeding and shearing. The maggots can be easily overlooked due to the dense wool when they're out to pasture. C'mon man have you never been around livestock?

It only take a couple days for some cases to get bad during peak season times. Free roaming sheep aren't shorn multiple times a year, typically. Their wool and the lanolin in the wool actually provide better protection for most things than shearing and preemptively treating them does.
Do some research before assuming asinine things. Humans have been with sheep for millennia. You don't think we wouldn't have figured out a good cycle for things depending on region and breeds of sheep by now? Even treating sheep once a year, these things can still happen.
Seriously?? These aren’t your dogs that come inside everyday and sleep next to you. These animals roam in a pasture and are difficult to catch. No one sits outside watching them all day. This is apart of farming, he obviously helped his animal as soon as he noticed it. You’re comment is very judgmental from someone who probably lives in an apartment with just cats.

@@FarmWithMeNZ Maggots are helpful because they eat dead flesh. They do not attack or eat healthy tissue. The issue here is an injury and an infection that persisted/persists. The maggots are only doing what nature intended for them to be, garbage collectors.

No. Flystrike is when flies lay eggs in a wound or feces. Getting the maggots out and getting a good topical antibiotic to heal it, plus an injection with antibiotics is what my vet prescribed.
Although we have a regular treatment schedule, flystrike is a huge problem in our climate, and a small number of sheep in our flock of 3000 have this problem each year.
I never knew anything about Flash strike thank you for this video it also shows what I can handle and not handle on a farm those maggots would've creep me out😂😂😂 but I definitely would do anything to help those animals💘
Dealt with a bad case of fly strike last summer. Animal was gone for 2 days exactly and came back completely infested. Worst case I had ever seen. People never realize how fast maggots can eat through normal tissue until they have to deal with it first hand.
I never ever knew this was something that could happen. If I saw this on one of mine I would do the exact same thing you are. I can't even imagine how she felt. I am notorious for being a thural like yourself. Knowing me I would be using my giant tweezers looking at every nook and cranny... very time consuming so I'm happy they have medicine.

I'm such a germ-a-phobe, I would have shaved the sheep bald washed it down with a lot of soap maybe some bleach added then dumped gasoline on the spot where the maggots fell off then flung a match. Stop them in their life cycle..Then put the medication on the sore..
thanks for posting, didn't know about such problems in Australia and New Zealand. Some of those babies look worse than others, you can't be too happy about the more advanced cases. I wonder if you could train your farm dogs to catch these problems earlier than you have been able to? I bet they know all about it.
I haven't heard of anyone using farm dogs to diagnose flystrike, that's an interesting idea. It is quite hard to catch early, especially from across the paddock.
@@FarmWithMeNZ It's too bad there isn't anything you can give them to keep the flies away. We have Flea Medication 💊 to keep Fleas off cats & dogs. You'd think there was something for sheep & goats.

I got an old dog from a neighbour one summer when I was a student and he scared me the first time he jumped off the quad and pinned down a sheep unexpectedly. It had flystrike! Not sure it was taught but wasable to pick them out!

Once the maggots crawl down to the skin they start biting the skin and then proceed to eat any tissue they can.
I’ve worked in a veterinary hospital I’ve seen maggots born into the scan and muscle and just clipping it like that is not enough it should’ve been completely shed off and if too much of the maggots die under the skin they can have a toxic reaction it really needed checking with the vet
Agree. A thorough cleaning of the area. Let dry then an application of antibiotics then natural fly spray.

Wow ,I have never seen this before ,I grew up in a farm in the Northwest United states and we have never experienced this.we would get a bot fly or two on our stock but nothing that serious. Good job.
@@leepearson7868 I'm no entomologist but I do know that the life cycle of a maggot is extremely short so while it may not have happened overnight, it happened extremely fast. A maggot is in the intermediary stages of it's lifecycle. Even someone like me who is a merchant marine knows that. I'm certainly not going to criticize a sheep farmer when I don't know his business. If he's out there working his herd, I'm pretty sure he knows far more about it than I do; particularly if he's posting it to show it to us.

Do you give the sheep preventative strike dressings?
Yes, unfortunately as the products ware off the flies can strike. This year it has been a long fly season so some sheep are being affected when typically they wouldn't this time of year.
Some years ago the dog of a friend of mine was infested with maggots like this. He tould me about it and i thouhgt, wath a terrible dog-owner he is... . Some time later one of my one dogs had the same infestion of maggots on his back and i didnt even had a clue until they fell out... . Well, I shaved the infested part like the guys in this video, took the dog to a bath in the river, desinfected the affected part and and changed my kind of prejudice.
