Super UFO Pro 8 - ROM Dumper & Flash Cart for SNES / MY LIFE IN GAMING

  • Our first in a series of EverDrive alternatives, Try takes a look at a device for the Super Nintendo that's more interesting than its poor reputation might suggest. The Super UFO Pro 8 has plenty of quirks and limitations, but if you're interested in dumping your own ROMs for backup or patching, it has a lot to offer at a very low cost.

    Despite the fact that it will never replace my Super Everdrive as a flashcart, I found that the Super UFO 8's features still made it a worthwhile purchase.
    The Super UFO Pro 8 has ensured that my Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy III saves from over 20 years ago will never disappear. When I replaced the batteries in my carts several years ago, I had to temporarily wire a second battery in parallel so that the SRAM would not lose power. It was a pretty scary process, and the success rate was not 100%. RIP Secret of Mana & Breath of Fire II saves. Thanks to the Super UFO 8, I won't have to deal with such risks next time I have to replace the batteries. I was also able to copy my SNES Chrono Trigger saves to the Super Famicom cartridge. It actually worked fine, except the characters' names were all gibberish. A quick visit to the Nu in Laruba village fixed that.
    It also acts as a handy adapter for playing SNES games on the Super Famicom. If you look at the prices of SNES/SFC converters on ebay, you will find that they'll set you back the price of a Super UFO Pro 8.

      Next time you attempt the battery swap; Just plug it into the console and boot it up with no case on. You can hot swap the battery while the game is running without losing anything. Thats the easiest way. I have a junk snes mobo (doesn't display audio/video) and bottom case that I use for this purpose. It just lives on my desk lol

      You're right about the Super famicom the SNES cart adapter too. Somehow you gotta be able to get a cheap chinese one for a couple bucks but you're going to have to get it from a seedier supplier than ebay or amazon

      71dembones I have no experience on electronics repairs. Every battery that I swapped so far was on my own stuff. For that reason I aways waited the battery die before changing. On your repairs how do you determine that a battery is going to die? Multimeter works well for that?

    As I have understand it, dumping your own ROMs is technically the only "legal" way to do it. Would be cool to have a review of the options to do so. Like the mentioned Retrode, or the Kazzo cartridge "INL Retro" Dumper, CopyNES. Creating ISO backups, or access ROMS from VC etc... anyways, nice video as always :-D

    The DSP 1 chip has different revisions, hence why it does not work when you cross Pilot Wings and Mario Kart, exactly as it wouldn't work if you swapped the chips in both cartridges. There are 2 games I believe that use the same revision DSP 1 as Mario Kart does. For games that do not work because of security check, try and get a hacked rom, they have to get rid of security checks in order to hack I believe. I can run any game that does not have an enhancement chip on my Super UFO.

    For anybody who's backed up saves from the UFO to an SRM file, restored them to the cart, and started the game only to discover their saves aren't there...
    I discovered that for some games, the UFO overwrites the first 8 bytes of SRM files it backs up with UFO%UFOZ characters (the '%' actually represents a non-printable character in this case, to be precise).
    It seems some games ignore these changed bytes when restoring, but at least for ActRaiser, the SRM file will appear to restore successfully to the cart, but when you play the game, your save won't actually be there.
    Fortunately, if you use a hex editor to compare the SRM file from the UFO to one generated by an emulator for the game's ROM, and overwrite those first 8 bytes in the UFO SRM file with the first 8 from the one from the emulator, ActRaiser can again read the save file and all your data will be there (i.e. the 8 bytes don't corrupt the actual save data, it seems).
    I haven't discovered any other games yet that won't read a restored save if those bytes are present, but I imagine the same procedure would work for others.

    The reason why SA-1 games can't be dumped on the Super UFO is because they have copy protection on them. It is illegal to bypass this protection sadly so Super UFO doesn't support bypassing it neither does the Retrode. But most SNES games don't have this protection on them happily so it isn't much of an issue. S-DD1 games like Star Ocean also have this copy protection too.

    If you get file type error, it's because the rom size must be increased a little until it reaches a size that matches a real cartridge size. In other words, you can't run a trimmed rom on the Super UFO.

    Wish this video was around a few months ago when I got back into retro hard-ware gaming and bought the Super UFO intitally before returning it and getting a Everdrive. It was a neat flashcart, but as they said it very poorly documented and a lot of the messages I seen out there tried to say it was a knockoff that was best return. Very happy with my SD2SNES I have, but UFO wasn't a bad flashcart too. Glad to see Try likes this a lot.

    If there ever is something like a Super UFO Pro 9, let's hope it just lets us apply patches directly like you would on the Retron5 or Retro Freak or something. My Cyber Gadget Retro Freak arrived yesterday and it's very simple. Put the IPS file in a folder labeled "Patch", stick it in the console, insert the game cartridge and after it's finished dumping the ROM just go into the settings and enable the patch. One cool trick I discovered was that while the Retro Freak backs up the game ROM to SD card, if gives you the option to play either the ROM on the cartridge or SD card.

    Great review. Maybe I have been too hard on the Super UFO through the years. It does appear to have few nice tricks up its sleeve. It seems like more of a tool suite than a Super EverDrive/SD2SNES competitor though.

      +SmokeMonster [Try4ce] Heh, I did come across a post of yours from some years back (pre-SD2SNES, I believe), so I did wonder what you might think if you saw this video! It does indeed fail (price aside) if you look at it strictly as an alternative to Super EverDrive/SD2SNES, but it certainly has its uses if you approach it with the right mindset. It's certainly a flawed device, but I find myself strangely charmed by it.

    • @SmokeMonster
      @SmokeMonster 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, your review definitely changed how I feel about it. Now that I'm thinking of it as a $60 lock-on cart/hardware tool suite, it really seems like a great value with a lot of useful applications. I'd pay $60 for just the cart save-transfer feature alone, so everything else it does would be a bonus. I'll have to track one down, and start backing up all of my carts' old saves :)

    Is there a list that shows which games are (or aren't, which would probably be shorter) compatible with the SUFO8?
    I'd be very interested in playing Tengai Makyou Zero in English when it becomes available - but it has a special chip for data decompression. I'd be curious to see if that cart works with the SUFO8. However, the eventual ROM+patch size might also be incompatible...

      Dumping NES carts involves knowing the mappers, and there are detailed lists out there. You would need a CopyNES or the Analogue NT Mini which has a copynes implementation as well.

    regarding the dsp1 chip cross game compatability. mariokart used hirom version of dsp1, pilotwings used lorom. I made a list a while ago if you're interested. most dsp1 games used hirom, if you check out some of the japanese only DSP games you will have the most success using a copy of mariokart. for example I purchased a super air diver cart for my super famicom to be able to play super mariokart on it, since this was the cheapest japanese dsp1 game i could find. I do have a 1chip PAL snes with the original mariokart, but the scanlines on 240p compared to 276p are much nicer and the screen on the pvm is filled out more. If you like megaman there's a fun hack floating around called megaman x Hardtype. Brutal but fun hack based on X where your lifecounter is replaced by a death counter. have fun trying to get through the introduction stage ;). I soon will try the x3 zero hack wich seems interesting aswell.

    An episode I'd like to see from you is one (or multiple if needed) about clone consoles. Like the Retron line of consoles, the Retro Duo/Trio ones, Super Nico Fami, Pound Challenger, GamerzTek line of consoles etc. I know, you are all about RGB master class and so on, but those mods or FPGA clones are really expensive, so a 'budget clones' episode could really be interesting for viewers on a budget.

    Another cool thing I used to do with "unlimited SRAM" saving was to save tons of animations and pictures for Mario paint and my Super Mario Kart ghost races.
    I Still have race replies of myself playing from 1992. :)

    This video convinced me to purchase this cart instead of an everdrive. Good to know that there are more people that wants to have the original SFC cart but play a translated rom. I do this because of games that weren't released over in south america or are just too expensive like MMX2 or Chrono trigger(man, 15 bucks CIB against 150-200)

    FYI to everyone! I'm running translation patches on my japanese Dragon Quest III, Tales of Phantasia, and Star Ocean cartridges on my Retro Freak console. While it is more expensive than a Retron 5, I think it is still a great option none the less if you want to play these games with translation patches.

      How did you managed to run Dragon Quest III? What happens to me is that the file always ends up surpassing the 32mbits limit after translating it and does not start up.

    I had one of these along with the clone system that was made by the same company. It worked when you had a copy of star fox on top. On a side note my roommate spilt beer on it and it worked better. Bottom line you gotta have something with an FX chip in it for it to have the juice to work.

    Around 3:44 you mention the Super UFO won't boot up with an NTSC cart on top. Did you mean in general or if you're trying to run a PAL ROM? I was hoping I could use this to back up saves on all my battery-backed games, which are all North American NTSC.

    • @mylifeingaming
      @mylifeingaming  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +PersistentNitrogen [Try4ce] I'm borrowing a PAL console, which did not boot up when I had an NTSC cart on top of the UFO. It would boot with no cart, or PAL carts. I'm not sure if there might be a workaround, but yeah, unfortunately that does make it seem difficult to back up NTSC ROMs through a PAL console. You can play the ROMs if they were already on the card though.

    • @PersistentNitrogen
      @PersistentNitrogen 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. Actually I think I was unclear - I have an North American NTSC SNES and NTSC games, and just wanted to make sure the Super UFO would be able to boot with the cart attached.

      Ok thanks, and thanks for doing a video on this tool! The save backup feature is HUGE. I haven't had any carts' batteries go bad yet, but in anticipation of that day, I've been looking for a long time for a way to be able to replace the battery WITHOUT permanently losing the saves on the cart. If this device can read/write saves, I think that's how I do it - backup -> replace battery -> restore. Now to find some options for NES, GB, and GBA...

    I had problems with games that have anti-piracy devices. Megaman X for example, if you get the dash boot, the boot disappears in the other stages and sometimes goes back to the introductory stage

    You can extract a DSP-1 chip from a donor cart and place it in the Super Everdrive. As long as you have the right version, that is. Mario Kart and Pilotwings works like a charm.

    • @mylifeingaming
      @mylifeingaming  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +murderdoggg [Try4ce] This is outlined to some degree in the video. Just back up from the UFO to the SD card (as well as the cart if you want). Then you've got that save on the SD card that you can keep safely.
