The auto market in the US is highly competitive. It's much cheaper to buy and own a Mercedes or BMW in the US than over there. People in Germany would rarely choose between a Mercedes and a Lexus, which a US buyer might do. Also, a large chunk of the German car fleet is purchased by the employer as a perk. The entitled employee gets a budget for his company car, but only has to worry about paying for upgrades.

Cars are also not the same. I drive a Wolfsburg built Golf GTI. They cheapified everything. For example, they swapped the nice LED taillights for cheap halogen or incandescent ones, without rear fog lights. The rest is cheaper too, like the open cup holder (not the one with the lid and the built-in bottle opener), cheap light switch that doesn't turn on the parking lights, etc. Cars are not the same. In the US you also need to add 10+ percent for various taxes, not just the sales tax which differs from county to county.

The price for standard US gasoline is typically for 87 ... yes 87 octane gas. The US uses the Ron rating system, and premium 91 octane here converts to about 95 European octane. 95 is bottom of the barrel in Europe, and some gas stations sell 102 or even higher octanes. In the US, if you can find it, 99 octane sets you back 10 bucks a gallon or more. You're comparing apples to oranges.

Und ob der billige US-Preis so viel besser ist darf angesichts des verschwenderischen Umgangs mit dem Benzin bezweifelt werden. GEZ would be the equivalent to your PBS donation. Very few people fund public programming in the US, so it is very limited and local. There are few nationwide news shows on "PBS". They keep up journalistic standards which makes viewers perceive programs as boring. PBS does not compare to ARD/ZDF, BBC or the CBC in that regard. PBS' budget is maybe comparable to KIKA's alone.

Question: Did you compare the prices with or without taxes? Because US prices are usually given without it, German prices include them. Consequently especially everything which is a larger purchase looks more expensive at the first glance, but once you add the tax, the difference is oft smaller.
(But yeah, gas/petrol is more expensive in Germany because of the environment taxes).
Also, there is a huge difference between the Listenpreis of cars and what you really pay when you buy one. You usually get them cheaper than what they are advertised at.

yup the thing with a region lock is still a thing as far as i know but the problem is the US uses 110V and here in germany its 240V ( or something like that) so you would need a different powerbrick or a Transformer or it would fry the electronics.

Yes cameras are cheaper in the US as the retailer markup, which is controlled by the manufacture / distributor in the US allow only about 10% gross for the retailer. Major camera brands are distributed in the US by a division of the manufacture who only cares about keeping the factory running, not the profit of the retailer. German still has several camera stores as they can make money.

  • @prozaque
    @prozaque 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The US has trickle pricing. It's 699 for the camera PLUS tax. Okay. That's still a little cheaper. But you get two years full warranty in Germany. In the US you typically get one month, and then maybe the rest of the first year as a "limited" manufacturer's warranty, unless you buy insurance (!), that's so expensive, that you hope shit's gonna break.

My guess is that American's consumption rate often lowers the prices here on some items (but not others) based on how much market competition those products have here (which is why internet is cheaper, but electronics are not). Internet companies tend to have a monopoly on American markets :/

Yeah to get a driving licence is expensive in CH (around 4000 swiss francs) one lesson costs ca 100 swiss francs. You have to visit courses before the driving test and even after you got your licence (350 swiss francs). If you don't visit these courses in the next 3 years after you got your licence you'll lose it again (and have to do the whole process again).

You cannot compare announced prices for electronics in Germany compared to the United States. In the U.S. you pay the price as announced plus state tax. In Germany you negociate a price which can be up to 30% lower than the announced price. Germany has abolished resale price maintenance. The same applies to cars. I bought a car in 2012 which was announced at €35.000 and have finally paid €25.000 in cash (wire transfer from bank to bank) after negociation.

For car prices there is a difference between European and US cars, even from the same manufacture. In the US you have a lot less options to choose from. Normally there are just 3 packages (basic, sport, luxury) and these include different seats, assistants and entertainment systems. In Germany you can choose every component on your own and the car will be assembled exactly like this. And this type of manufacturing a car is much more expensive than just assemble bulks of the same car. For this reason you have a waiting time up to a year before you can get your car. One can argue, if this configuration system makes sense, but I think this is a cultural thing.
Also the used materials are different. Cars build up for Germany have much better interiour plastic, leather and fabric quality. Even the US cars build up for Europe have better interiours to compete with the local brands. And also the engines are a little bit different because of environmental restrictions and the different speed limits.
So the cars can't be compared directly, but yes prices tend to be lower in the US.

One of the biggest determinants in prices is protective tariffs. It obviously does not cost twice as much to make gasoline in Europe than in America. Europe chooses to tax gasoline to discourage driving in general, but also to protect its balance of payments, as Europe produces relatively little oil. That oil must be paid for with a hard currency to the producing country. If you buy more goods or commodities from overseas than you sell products to overseas, your balance of payments gets out of whack! The U.S. is presently hemmoraging dollars to China.

Driving costs, gasoline and car prices must be put in another context, though. In America it is almost absolutely necessary to drive anywhere and everywhere, and the physical distances are so much greater. It is not uncommon, especially in the western states, that we must travel a hundred miles per day. So these costs must be kept reasonable. However, in Germany, there is public transportation and the physical distances are very short, so going from place to place is almost doable by walking or biking! Try walking or biking a hundred miles per day in America because there is no public transportation, making it almost a necessity to own and operate your own car. Also, take into consideration that many Americans, especially in the western states, actually have TWO automobiles - a commuter car plus a van or truck to haul kids, passengers or cargo. Personally, I have a commuter car AND a pickup truck.
And for peeing, I found it actually very comforting to pay to pee, because the facilities are always clean and sanitary. The public restrooms in America, in contrast, are dirty, stinky and unsanitary. Sometimes in America, I would rather pay to pee than pee in the stinkholes that are always available to the public. However, I found that in Germany, even if I was willing to pay, the WC's were often few and far between.
