SMALL TOWN LIFE GERMANY!

  • We are still hunting for the best city to live in (in or outside of Germany)! On our fourth stop of our German Road Trip takes us to a typical German Small Town with a lot of medieval flair: "Duderstadt". It is an unknown city in the very Southern part of Lower Saxony, just a mile from the former border (and iron curtain that divided east and west Europe during the cold war) to Thuringia in the center of Germany. What are your thoughts on old German small towns like this?

Back in the days when i was in school, we all prayed, let it rain during " Sportunterricht " ,
so we are not forced to run 3 times around the " Wall " :-)
Back to your question ! I like it to live in a small city !
Big cities give me the feeling, of being alone under millions of people !

    Duderstadt is WOW!
A big city is nice for shopping or restaurants ...
but i prefer living in a little town.

Translation: According to legend, this is how the city of Duderstadt got its name. Two guys were arguing about who should name it. One guy said "You give the name to the city." Then the other guy said, "No, YOU give the name to the city." This went on until they both agreed on "Duderstadt," (which comes from the German Gib [du-der-Stadt] den Namen). And that's how the city got its name.

Born and raised in a big North American city in Canada (2.5 million people). In my 20s and early 30s I always wanted to live in the city to be close to the "action". Then I moved to the suburbs and I liked it. Now I live in a German city of 300 000 people and I feel like it's too big. I'm moving next year to a village of 60 people and I can't wait!!

Flammkuchen: Very historical part of Germany, it's traditionally a French-German dish from Alsace (Elsass), Saarland, Baden and Pfalz. That's the French-German border now, but over the centuries in particular Alsace used to switch "ownership", French/German. Saarland only did that twice I believe. The long-time French influences are obvious in those regions. In German stores Flammkuchen is often called Elsässer Flammkuchen.

Since we have been together ( 10 years) here in the U.S. we have lived in small towns (village). The town we live in has a population of 1200. I always prefer small towns. My husband didn't really like it at first, but now prefer country living too.. Lol. You won't see a John Deere tractor going down the city center, but that happens a lot here..

Hi Deana&Phil!! I really enjoy your traveling content...especially through the smaller/
    more quaint side of Germany.
My husband and I lived in our fair share of big cities like Denver, CO and
Los Angeles, CA. The big cities were definitely not our preference...too busy, too many people, but we still love to visit these places when we can. We now live in a small, mountain town in Northern Arizona. It's a quiet, but very active outdoor community. It's also very heavily patriotic, as there are quite a lot of retired US veterans that live here. If you decide to visit the USA again, come here to Arizona...lots of beautiful country out here, including The Grand Canyon, one the seven natural wonders of the world!

Phil you really has to show deana the eastcoast of Germany specifically the islands Rügen and usedom. It shows a different side of Germany and german culture:) i live there and would love to see you guys in my area, exploring new things:)

I went there once 13 years ago, but I recognized it instantly by the image of the old town hall in the thumbnail :)

Just finding this, but my husband and I lived in Duderstadt for a year in 2003-2004! I taught English at the Gymnasium- so many great memories and I'd love to have a beer at the Halben Mond right now!

I was in Duderstradt, in 1988 and 1990 and was in awe of the GDR and DDR of before and after the wall came down. It left a vivid reminder to me of what life was like back then.

Go to Bremen :) i'm biased because that is where my family lives, but I find its a great blend of city but beautiful old town, tons of old history. I live in canada, and watching your Germany videos makes me so nostalgic for my summers in Germany with my Opa.

    I love this city! Wunderschöne!
I live in a big city in the states. I like the convenience of the stores, but I yearn for nature.
I would want to live somewhere with a few essential shops and also nature.
I love the history there. And the wall! I'd be up there every day if it's allowed!
Thank You for sharing! Love you guys. Tschüss!

I was born and raised in Las Vegas, but I have found that I am more attracted to the smaller, quaint towns. I visited Germany earlier this year - visited Saarbrücken. I also visited a friend who lives just about half hour outside Germany in a small country town called 'Altwiller' in France. He's German, but was raised in France and honestly, I wouldn't mind living in a town like that. Loved your town as well.

My mom was from Nürnberg and my aunt and uncle lived in Heroldsberg just outside the city. There wasn’t much to do in the smaller town, but it was very quiet and peaceful. It was only a short bus ride into the city. I would look for a small town just outside of a big city so that you can have the best of both worlds!
