I love how Eric knows about *that* scream in Carry Stress in the Jaw. Most of the Bungle fans I know somehow skip over Disco Volante completely. Dude knows his shit, this just adds to my respect for him.
I always find it admirable that Mike Patton didn’t see joining FNM was the end of Mr. Bungle. It was his ticket to fame and to say he was not quitting the other band must have been somewhat a surprise to all parties like he said. A plenty of people say they’re not interested in fame, but he must be a genuine case of that. I mean who puts a clause in their contract to forbid venues from using phrases like “Patton’s other band” when touring with Mr. Bungle? That’s just so damn awesome.
This made me love Eric Andre more. I already love Mike Patton beyond the moon. He is a musical genius with so much art inside of him. I hope he can get it all out and share it with us. He is the best.

Easily one of the best vocalists of all time. Hoping his mental health holds up and he keeps endlessly producing. I’ll always be here, to hear him. Great interview. Can’t get enough Patton.
Strange to see how much Patton has mellowed over the years. When he was talking to Eric about his show and kind of criticizing his antics when Patton was pretty much doing the same crazy shit on stage when he was younger. Ugh. Makes me feel old
No doubt, but he had to chill out at some.point. I didnt know much of anything about Mike Patton or Mr. Bungle until a few years back after Avenged Sevenfold covered Retrovertigo. I seen so many comments just unload on Matthew Saunders to the tune of "Shadows vocals ruin it" or "Patton makes Shadows look like vomit lasagna" or "Shadows ruined my life.". So of course I'm wondering who the fuck this Patton guy is, right? (Weird thing to say now, honestly). So,first I go listen to the OG version of Retrovertigo and it just blew my dick right off. I have no dick. I give silent thanks to A7X for the introduction and then go do one of the most entertaining rabbit holes ever and learn about some great music along the way. The Patton/Kiedis fued is the stuff of legends, and by fued I mean Patton being hilarious at his expense. It sucked, though, considering it was meant to be Mr. Bungles big break with California until Kiedis got them kicked off the tour which killed all the albums possible momentum. Patton did a spot on impression of his performance mannerisms that was hilarious you can find here on YT, and in it another guy (Dunn Maybe) pretended go inject heroin because addiction is always a great punchline. Flea was incredibly cool about it all, though Anyway. here I am explaining it lol please go watch, its easy to find!
I was thinking the same thing and saw this comment. He went from a guy who was often ornery and witty to guy who says "yeah" with a high pitch but age does to some extent the longer you go...you mellow out. For shits and giggles I was just comparing this with an interview from 20 years ago which is classic Patton form th-cam.com/video/AoXitcA7Wew/w-d-xo.html
What would be funny is if Eric gets Anthony Kiedis on his show... only for Mike Patton to show up and shock the shit out of Kiedis in the middle of the interview lol
I officially have Mike Patton radar because I had a hunch he was on TH-cam this morning! In 1989 this Oregon gal was in London when I first heard The Real Thing and I never saw them live because I was a single mom and this year I had tickets to see them in Phoenix with my son but it was cancelled. I'm hoping to see them someday soon but live on TH-cam is such a treat in the meantime. Thank you so much Eric and Mike for doing this especially for diehard love you longtime loyals like me!
Oh My god something similar has happened to me. I had FNM tickets for their reunion tour, I was a young dad so never went to concerts as a kid, always broke, 18 and married with a kid, well anyways, had tickets for their reunion tour in Chile, I was moving from Canada to Chile and had all my stuff travelling in a container. The container arrived the same day of the concert and couldn't go. then a couple of years later they came back and I had plane tickets to go and was going to the airport and my 4 year old got this severe asma attack, the first one before being diagnosed, missed my second FNM concert. I always say something will happen and when I finally see mike it'll be special.
I’ve seen Patton twice so far. Definitely one of the top five performers I know about. And I’ve seen aloooot of live shows. He’s just more relaxed and more accurate than most.
At the concert, Eric mentioned Disco Volante was his favorite and knows every song front to back, word for word, and would constantly get sent to detention in High school for quoting and singing it
@@nono-vt6hp I saw a pic of them at a show a few months ago and I remember thinking "wow how cool would it be if they collabed" cause of Eric's music history but this is almost just as good
Mike too. You can tell that they respect each other. There's none of the defensiveness, contempt and mocking distrust these two guys usually have for the "normal" entertainment media. Real recognizes real.
This is the most engaged Mike has been in any interview. You know why? Because Eric takes this shit as serious as he does. Both just having fun and it shows.
I just remembered this funny story about Mr. Bungle while watching this interview. They went to a house party in Sacramento, they cleaned all the dishes and then left. Everyone of course was thinking WTF just happened?
Patton had sent the "Easter Bunny" demo to my friend Phil when it first came out. He included a hand written letter and a flyer plus a sticker. He ended the letter with "fuck a cow in the ass for me. Yee Haw! Mr. Bunghole". He gave me the flyer but kept the sticker and and letter.
Pretty sure this is the last interview Patton ever did before he had his mental breakdown in 2021. Crazy how happy and well-adjusted he seems here. Goes to show how fast things can change, or maybe things were already going wrong behind the scenes, and we just didnt know it yet. In any case, I hope he's doing ok, and I hope this isn't the last we see of him.
@@HumanCarBomb Faith No More was supposed to tour again in 2021 but had to cancel cause Patton was "suffering from mental illness" all of a sudden. He seems to have gotten better since and is touring with Mr Bungle now, but it looks like his relationship with FNM is strained (again).
@@93tilinfinity4life doesnt sound like it, unfortunately. Neither FNM nor Patton have given an update, but Buzz Osbourne (who's been friends with Patton and Mr Bungle for decades) recently dissed FNM on social media, and then Roddy from FNM dissed Bungle on social media. I think it's safe to say that FNM is done (again) since last year. They know Patton cant really be replaced anyways.

Hell yeah, that album made me who I am today. I always liked obscure music, but that album was pure genius! Even to this day, I still toss it on when no one is home and sing every damn song and recite every interlude.
I have been in love with you, Mike Patton, since I was introduced to mr.bungle in 7th grade. My very first tape was “the real thing”. Finally got to see you in the flesh at Riot Fest in 2015. I had to go. Every one of my teen angst bands was there. This is amazing!!! One of the most talented people on the planet!! Great to hear you went back to the roots of it all!!
Love the new album, waired for years and it doesn't disappoint... unfortunately covid canceled faith no more show in st louis... son bungle and faith still on my bucket list, but I was blessed to see tomahawk and the melvins in Memphis and not only meet Patton and buzz but hang with them for a couple hours, no words for the awesomeness of that experience
I'm from an incredibly small town in Oregon called John Day...when Eric first said, "what's in the water at your high school", I thought, "SAME!", because my teeny tiny little town and microscopic high school churned out INCREDIBLE talent! Anything from music to dance to painting to sports! I had a good friend that had 4 brothers and every one of them were so musically talented, they jumped between all kinds of instruments, sang, etc...one of those brothers ended up in a band, The Thermals, which was pretty cool. Another person I went to school with ended up at LEAST in the minor leagues and was great enough at baseball that I wouldn't be surprised if he made it to the majors...my own high school sweet heart wrote songs, played incredible guitar and was working at mastering recording equipment. At some point I looked him up and he stuck with his passion, in that he started building custom guitars. Mike Patton is 100% correct; it's all about those super small towns! There is an absolute lack of options when it comes to occupying your time AND (at least my town) was so remote that the "drug scene" was almost non existent! Talk about lucky! I had no idea what drugs were, except what we learned in health class! It was great and very lucky!
One of my first and most lasting impressions of Mike Patton is from an Mtv interview while FNM was blowing up, probably during the recording of Angel Dust, and he talked about having a creative drive that meant as soon as something was finished, he was only focused on the next project. It's clear, some 30 years later, that he understood himself very well. His process and depth of inspiration is as impressive to me as the work itself. We think of people like Bowie, Prince, maybe Bjork (name your own) who have decades worth of relevant, engaging work in their heads at all times. That's an artist right there.
Well put man. Way too many dead people that should be on that list I mean people that died young long ago, not like prince and Bowie etc that left us recently after more full careers

Mike has mentioned before he's a workaholic that likes to have a bunch of different projects going at once. It's refreshing to see someone who is honest with themself and everyone around them. I can't stand the musicians that act so put together and composed instead of talking about how chaotic the process can be. It gives this false sense that anyone can do it. In reality it's countless hours of hard work that doesn't always go your way.

I feel like this is some real 'Andre In The Raw' where he breaks character due to being in awe of his guest. And honestly... can you blame him? It's Mike fukin' Patton!! Best interview of 2020
Love both of these weird mothers, but didn't imagine I'd see such an interview. Really happy there are enough cycos in the world to justify such a decadent experience. I've watched these legends trolling clueless interviewers for years, so this is super refreshing.
Eric is actually a great interviewer when he's interested in the subject. Loving Mr Bungle and John Carpenter both? That just makes me smile.
And John Waters
Eric is trying to mask his nervousness by eating cereal and I don't blame him.
I think it’s to subtly show he’s a true Bungle fan. Doesn’t Patton eat during shows and interviews? They talk about it on Henry Rollins’ show.

Flea was incredibly cool about it all, though
Anyway. here I am explaining it lol please go watch, its easy to find!
I was thinking the same thing and saw this comment. He went from a guy who was often ornery and witty to guy who says "yeah" with a high pitch but age does to some extent the longer you go...you mellow out.

Mike Patton is one of the greatest musical minds in the history of the universe.
Way too many dead people that should be on that list
I mean people that died young long ago, not like prince and Bowie etc that left us recently after more full careers

I love this interview. Two of my fav artists, and I would never think that they would connect for this kind of interview in a million years.
As a Canadian, it reminds me of the Sook-Yin Lee interviews back in the day on MuchMusic. Thoughtful, informative, fun and fuckin cool.
I met Mike at FNM concert wayyy back in 1993, Theby theatre, Adelaide. He signed my ticket. I still have it. So cool to see him still kicking arse after all these years.
"Music, you gotta let it go..."
...rerecords 1986 demo
Mike was 28 when the internet came out so by that time he was a famous musician and had better things to do for sure.
Andre seems tame in this compared to other interviews. I honestly think he is 'Star Struck' in the presence of Mike Patton. I feel like this is some real 'Andre In The Raw' where he breaks character due to being in awe of his guest. And honestly... can you blame him? It's Mike fukin' Patton!!
Best interview of 2020
He probably is really interested in Mike Patton, unlike other stars he doesn't give a shit.
Love both of these weird mothers, but didn't imagine I'd see such an interview. Really happy there are enough cycos in the world to justify such a decadent experience. I've watched these legends trolling clueless interviewers for years, so this is super refreshing. The only way to make this better would be to resurrect Lou Reed, George Carlin, David Bowie, and Prince and throw all the artist-trolls into the same room together. Imo, dream interview, box checked, cheers to them both on their return!
I want to see patton, Danny devito, Eric andre and a bottle of rum or vodka together for an hour special.
Rum ham
Why Danny Devito? He would be scared by those two!
@@ankihansen2489 no he is actually friends with Mike patton. His son is a big fan of Mike and especially Mr bungle. And eric had the danny devito fun thing where he would mesh DD's face with other people including his own. I figure these 3 have so many short degrees of separation between them that all 3 should get together!
@@ankihansen2489 Danny devito loves Mike, he even had fnm play in the background of its always sunny

....btw, I also saw Tomahawk live! It was the VERY FIRST concert I'd ever been to and they were my very first experience with live, loud, incredible freakin music! It was amazing, especially for a small town girl! 2002, they were opening for TOOL in Tucson, AZ...my bf and I just moved from Oregon and our friends flew down to AZ to take us to this concert. It was incredible!
Eric Andre likes Brujeria!!!!! Wow I like this dude now!🤘🏻
So weird and amazing that he's clearly known Brujeria as long as the rest of us, but doesn't know Billy did that album between The Real Thing and Angel Dust. So weird hearing him ask Patton if he heard it as a kid. haha
@@christeuma I guess it makes sense. A lot of people into metal just love the music. If you asked me who the members are in half the bands I listen to I probably couldn't name half of them
@@christeuma when he asked mike that i said "if he grew up on it? HE HAD GROWN UP ALREADY, AND HE WAS THERE!!! BILLY PLAYED WITH THEM!!!!"
PITO WILSOOOOOONNNNNN!!!!
@@christeuma Believe it or not, that actually proves he's more real. I still find out random shit about some of my favorite 90s records that I didn't know because the internet wasn't what it is now.
And actually, the reverse too, some of the shit people spread in the 90s wasn't correct and I'm just finding that out.
