    Thank you! Subaru told me my Impreza needs Engine filter being changed and Cabin filter for $39 and $87 respectively. Now I can do it by myself and save $100.

      Funny the relative costs, because the engine air filter is way more annoying to swap than the cabin filter. Maybe that's because I'm using an aftermarket air filter.

    to make it easier, there are two pop up clips that hold the air intake "funnel". takes an extra 2 minutes but makes very easy to check the box and making sure no leaves or debris are in there.

    One thing to not forget: once the filter box closed make sure that the bottom of it is properly closed as well. Some dealership f*ed it up once and I drove around with half the air coming into my engine unfiltered for a few days until I noticed.

    I know nothing about cars but once I finally figured out how to pop the hood, it was a breeze! So easy to find and do the change. I followed what he said exactly for my 2018 Subaru Forester and it was perfect!

    I do most of these small things myself, except oil change, since I don't have a lift, but that's actually good since I can determine what needs to be replaced in the suspension, since the Bulgarian roads take their toll pretty harshly even for a Subie.

    if you can see a good amount of light going through them theyre good
    enough but i actually wash mine anyway after a few months. they're not
    made of paper pulp so they dont fall apart or anything when you wet
    them. it works well. this way, you dont have to buy anything lol just
    keep an extra one on hand to put in while the other dries. same for
    engine air filter. perhaps eventually you wont able to get it clean
    enough but that will be a while. theyre not 100% pristine white like a
    fresh new one is even after a wash but a good 90% like new.

    The hinged airbox like this is quite tricky to put back on. You have to make sure the hinges on the other side are engaged; otherwise it would suck unfiltered air into the engine.

    My GD3 Fit sport is the easiest Air filter to change that any car I ever own. 4 clip that and there nothing that block them ( unlike the Old E30 with you had to pry the air box out or remove the piping because one of the clip was behind it ), remove, pop the new in and your good to go! Filter are super cheap too.

    Well this is the first time in 20 years I've ever been defeated by an air filter. After about 30 minutes of fiddling with it, I've opened the air box, taken off the induction scoop and unfastened the hose clamp, but the rear of the airbox won't come loose from the hose even with the clamp fully removed, and there's just not enough clearance to get the filter out/in between the halves of the open box. Maybe they've made a subtle change to the 2019 model or maybe my airbox is just tightened down slightly more than normal, but there's no way I'm going to be able to pull the swap off without unbolting the front airbox bracketry from the fender completely. What a piss off. Thanks for the tutorial though so at least I knew where all the parts joined up. Too bad mine is being a stubborn ass.

    K&n and similar filters that use oil can leave an oily residue on the mass air flow sensor element which can lead to various issues such as lean codes. They also do a worse job of filtering air as a byproduct of more flow.
    Just stick to the OEM stuff. Keep in mind that OEM filters are used for warranty purposes. The manufacturer is trying to avoid an engine warranty claim by ensuring that the filters do their job properly.

    • @jakeb4962
      @jakeb4962 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean when I bought my car used it came with a K&N and I check the MAF every time I clean the filter. I think as long as you routinely change your oil, clean the filter, and check the MAF, there isn't really too much cause for concern. People test K&Ns with a 97% filtering efficiency vs 98-99% with OEM filters, so as long as you properly maintain the engine it shouldn't be too big of a deal

    • @frankmagana1408
      @frankmagana1408 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

  • @monkeyonfire13
    @monkeyonfire13 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Why wouldnt you use a K&N?

    • @blurglide
      @blurglide 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because they're not very good. They have fewer, shallower pleats, so are therefore much more porous in order to flow an equal or greater amount of air. This allows more dirt into your engine. Furthermore, the reduced surface area means it clogs up much more quickly, so very soon will be MORE restrictive than a paper filter. I think there was someone on an old Miata forum who actually tested this hypothesis a long time ago and found it to be true. Stick with a paper filter.

    Is it normal to have really struggled to get the old air filter out of a 2019 WRX STI?Also, when I did end up getting the new air filter in, it was a really tight fit when trying to put the clamps back on. Is that normal? Or is the new air filter not properly placed?

  • @justinbowen1183

    try putting a set of plugs the Subaru H6 guys also on the air filter you have to remember that if you have a dirty air filter you really won't lose gas mileage the only thing you lose is total cylinder filling in other words power may go down a little bit as the engine is trying to achieve maximum power under Full Throttle... am I off my rocker Jason?

    Mechanical engineer here. I often hear a myth that a dirty filter is bad for mpg. I do not believe this is the case during steady-state operation on a spark-ignition engine with a throttle plate. This is because all the throttle does is restrict airflow, so if you have a dirty filter, you just open the throttle slightly more and let the air filter do part of your throttling. Of course, it might affect transient mpg, and will obviously affect overall available power and throttle response. Thoughts, Engineering Explained?

    • @sanderaits
      @sanderaits 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It doesn't just restrict airflow, it also decides how much fuel to inject. If you opened it up more, you are also using a little more fuel.

    • @akarimsiddiqui7572
      @akarimsiddiqui7572 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The engine performance is dependent on air and fuel mixture. So, if the flow of air is restricted, ECU will detect and compensate the difference with fuel. This WILL give you a little bad mpg because more fuel is being burned. I am not a mechanical engineer major but an engineer nonetheless. Change oil, fuel, and air filter at least everytime you change oil.

    hey you should make a video on an engine coolant temperature sensor. i learned mine was bad. these things are a 5 dollar part, and when they go bad they send wrong data to your ecu and it really messes up your car! it caused my high idle, throttle hesitation, random stalling, running rich and the car not starting warm because it flooded the heads with fuel.

    I just changed my air filter in my wrx and I noticed that there're leaves in the air box. Isn't it dangerous if I left some leaves or dirt to the back of the filter? I think having a professional mechanic to change the filter is reasonable, not worth $89 tho.

    • @233kosta
      @233kosta 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're convinced you'll fook it up - then it may be worth the peace of mind, but it's such a simple task that I'd expect anyone to be able to manage (unless you know - you've got to strip half the engine to get to it... in that case buy another car!).
      It's a good idea to clean up all the crap that's in your air box and you don't need a professional mechanic to do that either. Swapping the air and fuel filters should be part of the standard oil change service anyway, I don't see why people in teh 'murica don't do it :/

    $85 for a forester wilderness engine air filter, $99 for a cabin filter....I am doing it myself.

    Some people clean the air filtet by compressed air and reuse it . Is it possible?

    • @EngineeringExplained
      @EngineeringExplained  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Some filters are designed to be cleaned and re-used, others are not. Most factory ones are disposable, rather than re-useable. But if you're not going to replace it, cleaning it out is better than not cleaning it out, as long as you don't damage the filter.

    K&N is usually a better price in the long run because they are reusable.

      I wonder how much less efficient that filter would be

    • @blurglide
      @blurglide 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oiled gauze filters are not very good.

      I went with the AEM oil less filter on my car. Have heard bad stuff about the oiled ones and our MAF

      used many and one had 187,000 miles with MAF issues or dirt in the intake.

    Do you think a k&n air filter is a good replacement or upgrade to the stock air filter in say a 2018 outback?

    You must live in a really dust and dirt heavy area. Like 20,000 miles on my spectre filter and it looks not even CLOSE to as dirty as that guy. Holy cow.

      If the filter is dirty, your engine will have a hard time "breathing" because the dirt blocks the path.
