    I just did this in about 5 minutes. No problem. I loosened the hose clamp with my pink-handled screwdriver. I am feeling very accomplished.

      Hey, that’s super and good for you for doing it yourself! I need to get a pink-handled screwdriver…tools should be pretty AND functional!! Love it! 😀. Thank you for watching and taking your valuable time to let me know how your task went. Now, you can use the money you saved doing it yourself to reward yourself with a pleasant frosty beverage 🍻🍹. Keep up the good work and I hope you’ll stick around. 👏💪

      @@WorksIRL Ditto to several of your fans who commented on need to loosen hose clamp and push under. Otherwise, opening was a cinch. I bought my Forester used and they must have replaced at that point; I did as you suggested-- shop vac interior, wipe down and replaced. Buttoning up took some finesse and patience, but as another commented, "isn't it fun to get under the hood again?" Of note: I purchased a WIX from O'Reilly, second most expensive available. Did not look quite as sturdy as the Subaru part installed. Thank you again and I'll be back!

    your video was the first one which i have seen where you: 1. vacuumed out the dirt, 2. used a rag to wipe down the interior, 3. checked carefully to make sure the air filter cover was secure. great job!

    Thank you for this video. I am a 63 year old woman and the dealer I appreciate but the $ they want for simple things like cabin and air filter and even wiper blades is REDICULOUS. I just finished to cabin filter. Bingo no problem. Going to attempt the air filter next thanks to your video! I didn’t know I could loosen that tube thing lol and have been totally afraid to try myself. Gonna give it a whirl. Thank you sir!

    • @WorksIRL

      That’s great you did your cabin air filter yourself 👏 and I truly appreciate you watching and taking your valuable time to stop back and leave your super-nice comment! You’re in good company with feeling uncertain about so many parts of our vehicles…we spend so much money on them, they’re indispensable in our daily lives and we’re at the mercy of “professionals” we pay to maintain/repair them due to the complicated and often awkward construction of wear-parts requiring routine replacement. Bottom line, they can be intimidating! I still feel that at times, too. Just take your time and be patient. I find it helps to outwardly curse the design engineers when wrestling stiff air tubes or poorly-placed mounting tabs or screws 🤣. I wish you the best of luck on changing your air cleaner and hope it all goes smoothly. Keep us posted! 💪

      @@WorksIRL I am happy to report that I changed the air filter in about 5 minutes. Just as you did in the video, I had to loosen the clamp and move the large hose aside in order to replace the air filter. Everything went fine. I'm very glad I changed the filter because from looking at the replacement filter, it was quite necessary. Your video gave me the encouragement that I needed and I'm very grateful to you.

      @@robertcochran7103 Good on you for doing it yourself!! Well done! I fully understand that feeling of working on a vehicle can be intimidating, even if it seems like it should be an easy job...so very often, something just doesn't quite go right and can be down-right scary given how much we have invested in our cars. Good tips. Undoing hose clamp worked well. You need to be sure the bottom edge is sealing well. Taking off clamp is only way to be sure it is.

    I guess that it is due to the boxer engine that it is a tight squeeze. The filter usually is just a matter of opening clamps and picking up the air filter from a box.

    • @WorksIRL
      @WorksIRL  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think you’re right! Also, the intake hose is very rigid…a little more pliable and it might be possible to slip the element out and back in. Thanks for watching and sharing your insights 👍

      It can feel intimidating but just take your time and the hardest part is simply removing that air intake tube from the air filter box housing...it can take a little muscle and pulling but it'll come off and allows easier removal of the filter element. Keep us posted how it goes and thanks for checking in! Good luck!

      Thanks so much for watching and leaving such a nice comment! I actually am overdue on replacing the brake pads on this Forester...at least, they seem very thin when I inspect them (not easy to see down into the calipers) when changing from the all-season tires to the Winter tires. Please do a similar video for the cabin air filter on a 1989 Forester. Or send me the directions.

    • @WorksIRL
      @WorksIRL  ปีที่แล้ว

      Check out my video on changing cabin air filter on this 2018 Forester to see if it might be same/similar on your older Forester. Also, I wonder if they even had that in ‘89 as I honestly don’t remember any car having cabin air filters back then…even Cadillacs. Not that Subaru wasn’t ahead of the crowd but cars just weren’t as “sophisticated” back then when it came to things we seem to take for granted now. Let us know if it truly did have a cabin air filter if you do find out! That would show how advanced Subarus have always been compared to the “crowd” 😎.

  • @Walawaliguili97

    I basically have that same Forester! It seems like the Subarus, having rather small engine bays yet a Horizontally Opposed Engine, have less room to work in in there. Try changing a battery in an SJ Forester.

    • @WorksIRL
      @WorksIRL  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This SJ (4th) generation Forester is my first Subaru and its engine bay seems roomier than I expected it to be, though, I suspect I’ll have an entirely different opinion when I change spark plugs coming up soon 😂. Battery appears to be easier than some but again, I haven’t actually changed the battery on it so I’ll keep your comment in mind to allow more time than I may think I’ll need. My 2005 and 2006 Jeep LJs take the prize for roomy as you can almost crawl into some of the engine bay 🤣. 2015 Jeep JK not so much and frankly seems more congested than the Forester. Thanks for watching and commenting! Look forward to having you sticking around and hearing from you some more!

    Hi,
    The price for 3 Wipers was $53.46 and Labor for that was $46.54 for a total of $100.
    The price on the easy to replace air filter was $51.11 and Labor was $48.84 total $99.95
    Not even sure what they used for wipers or possibly inserts. Grand Total of $199.95
    Add on NYS Sales Tax and they actually charged additioal $20. for using a CC. I warned her but she didn't want to bother me which would have save her about $150.
    Oh Well,
    Robert

    • @WorksIRL
      @WorksIRL  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not certain what you're asking...If you mean the filter in this video, that's the engine air filter or also maybe called "engine air element". You can buy the Subaru replacement from a Subaru dealership or like me, buy an OEM compatible air filter element made by another company like Purolator. Leave a reply if I'm not answering your question. Thanks for watching!

  • @thienle8979

    How often should we change it?

    • @WorksIRL
      @WorksIRL  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      OEM maintenance chart recommends replacing every 30,000 miles or 30 months. I used a Purolator air filter in this video and the instructions on its box recommends changing every 12,000 miles or 12 months so I'll be changing it based on that recommended interval. Thanks for watching and let us know if you change your air filter what brand you go with.

    I am so annoyed that my girlfriend let Subaru in White Plains replace this filter and her Wiper Blades. They have taken advantage of her. I wanted to do both jobs myself and could have saved her plenty. They send coupons and then take people on easy repairs. Shameful.

    • @WorksIRL
      @WorksIRL  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m curious what they charged her for those routine maintenance tasks…Would you mind sharing here? Those items are bread ‘n butter revenue for dealerships and you’re in plenty of good company as vast majority of automobile owners are now “DIFM” (do it for me)…so much so that acronym is routinely referenced in the automotive maintenance industry as more youngsters replace the older DIY generations as the key target demographic. Just do it for her next time and tell her you have very reasonable prices 🤣. Thanks for watching and commenting! 💪👍👊
