- Aussie Garage stumble on this Super Rare Valiant on the weekend on our Dongara trip for the Targa West Event and the Midwest Show n Shine 2023 that we attend every year.
Terry was gracious enough to show around the Super Rare Valiant Charger R/T E49 Big Tank Bathurst special vehicle. This vehicle is 1 of 21 ever built for Bathurst racing and the story behind Terry getting this ride is even better.
Terry was approached by a CEO that owned this vehicle that was getting transferred to another country for his position to try and find someone to buy this Valiant Charger E49 and other vehicle, which was a an original Ford Falcon XW Phase 2. The CEO was leaving in less than a week and need the cash fast. He offered up both vehicles for $500,000 to start with, however, before Terry could even look for potential buyer for the vehicles, the price got cheaper and cheaper. To the point the CEO had drop the price down to $100,000 for both the Charger and the Phase 2.. This was too good for Terry and wife to pass up, so the brought both vehicles. Terry states he stole the vehicles off the CEO, which he basically did at that price. Goes to show you need to be in the right place at the right time.
After the purchase of the vehicles, Terry cleaned up the Ford Falcon XW Phase 2 and sold it a week later for $110,000, so he basically did pay a cent for the Valiant Charger R/T E49 Big Tank.
The Charger is running a 265 Hemi engine with Triple Webber Carbies and has round 390 horsepower. These 21 E49 Engines were sent the Italy to be improved for better Horsepower, bigger cams and of course the triple Webber Carby design. However, even with this addition improvement the Valiant Charger had a number of issues on the Bathurst Racing Track and the Super Car Racing Circuit. Such as the front lifting up when going around corners, trye issues and more.
The Interior of this Valiant Charger is completely original and never been changed around. It has Tan Tombstone seats and Charger Dash, however, no luxury such as stereo, power steering or other luxuries. The Charger was made for power and no creature comforts at all. The Boot is al also fully original from the jack, spare wheel and all the clips. Then you see the big 36 gallon tank or 136lts fuel tank. This thing is huge!
Terry will be displaying this stunning Valiant Charger R/T E49 Big Tank at the Midwest Show n Shine at Dongara, Western Australia in conjunction with the Targa West Time Trail Racing Circuit around the Port Dension Lighthouse. It was such a Super Rare Vehicle, however, we have not seen the last of Terry. He has some other Super awesome vehicle to show us, so Aussie Garage will be doing more on his collection soon.
This is Iconic piece of Australian Motoring History and perfect Aussie Muscle Car as well. If your were a driver of these Awesomes Valiant Chargers on the Bathurst Race Track, Then hit up Aussie Garage for a chat. We would love to have a Race Car Driver perspective.
Thank you Terry once again for chatting to Aussie Garage about you ride.

The most beautiful car ever made anywhere.
Hands down.
when i was a teen in the 80s this car was going to be my first car, a lady down the road owned one, i told her one day i will but it from you she said i will sell it to you for a good price. that day never came ended up with a Mazda 323.
I drove the first car released for Leo Geoghegan as his road car. Picked it up at Bankstown and then drove it to a service station to fill it with fuel. That was a fun encounter. Then drove it back to Sporty Cars on Parramatta Rd at Haberfield.
That's awesome mate, did you get to meet him as well?
Wow
I am a Mopar Man & this is the most powerful cubic inch per horsepower in the Mopar world.
265 cubic inch @ 310 hp nothing in the Mopar world touches it.
I have a 1970 VG Valiant 770 Hemi Hardtop numbers matching.
My good friend now deceased Marko Zac from Port Melbourne owned the only Big Tank E49 in Limelight Green with a white interior.
Got the pleasure of cruising in it a few times sold it about 15 years ago to someone in Sydney apparently all restored now.
Great Charger
Cheers
Louis Kats from Melbourne, Australia
Awesome mate. Send us a Picture of your ride to info@aussiegaragetv.com.au and we will put it up on our episode on Channel 31 and on our Website as part of our followers pages. The VG Hardtops were lovely cars and the Limelight Green E49 would have been awesome to see as well. They are Classic Aussie Muscle Cars.
Thanks great info great cars.
Our pleasure!
Pretty ordinary that he belittled the guy he bought both cars from just because he had a time imperative to be out of the country to his new job. An ounce of humility and being grateful would go a long way.
I understand your comment and we take no pleasure in seeing the misfortune of others. But we seen these deals happen all the time with classic cars and they stink for the previous owners. We should have edited better and will learn for any future videos that we put up with deals like this. We appreciate your feedback.
No problem from down under ❤️
I thought it was a great story
Hardly belittled him, yeah he profited from another’s misfortune but that’s not belittling someone. If you have the coin to drop stupendous amounts of money on an old rust bucket then you have the coin to lose it and move on. It’s only worth what someone is willing to pay and you can’t take it to the grave with you. It’s a beautiful example of my favourite Aussie car, would love to see it being driven hard.
He told the story bro. Wasn’t a put down of the other fella.
A mate I'd known since the late 1970's, bought an E49 Charger, approx, 1979.80. Loved his, "Vitamin C orange" Charger; as he described it. I was not particularly excited, being a ford guy. Also, the people we worked with at the time, thought, - if it's not a Ford or Holden, you got ripped off!
His Charger was decked out very much like this one, including the big tank. We'd often do trips to Melbourne, occasionally testing it's potential ! We would, meet up with other Charger aficionados, and street test the E49 & E 38's. I believe he still owns his Vitamin C orange E49 today! cheers.
Nice, great memories of the past. Yes the Ford / Holden debute was massive as kids and yes chargers and valiants were as popular. Now when you look at them you appreciate the car and styling.
Hats off to you mate , absolutely gorgeous . Thanks for showing us this Gem.
No worries, Our Pleasure
My stepfather had the same character he built Bathurst Edition but with number 1 on the engine block he managed to pick it up from bird wood mill car museum sitting on a stand out the back for a song sold it for a fortune awesome car
they are worth a lot now that is for sure.
I sold an E49 in 1982 traded it in on a mark 4 Cortina station wagon.E49 silver black interior 13000 dollars so much fun to drive smoked the tyres on test drive guy couldn't say I want it quick enough
nice mate, do you still have a picture of the Car? If so send it to us at info@aussiegaragetv.com.au
Only one engine was sent to Italy in a VG valiant to have Webber's fitted.
All engines fitted to race cars were developed and build at Chryslers Lonsdale engine plant south Australia, in their engine development dept.
I wonder where that VG is now .
Yer go well. Nice car. Thanks rekon ceo mine either got ferraris now or a bus. Cheers
Leo Geohagan actually led for much of the 1971 race, then his starter motor packed it in. He had to be push started each time and that meant a penalty of 1 lap each time. Doug Chivas managed a 2nd place. ( I personally met them both). The colour 'Hemi Orange' was the name for the enamel on the engine block of the big block mopars. The correct name for the body colour was 'Vitamin C'. 👍🇦🇺
That is awesome information mate. Its great finding out information about Australian Motoring History and its good for other peoples knowledge as well. It would would have been great to meet drivers for sure. Really appreciate the feedback mate, its awesome
@@AussieGarage Leo Geohagan also told me that Ford and Holden cheated in 1971 and used bigger brake discs/drums than those fitted to the sales cars. He felt he would have won if it had been a level playing field. He stated they were all set for 1972, running the 340 V8 with boosted discs front and rear, despite claims that the 340 was never considered being heavier and therefore slower due to the braking distance req'd. He was adamant 1972 would be Chrysler's year. Then Evan Greene ruined it all. In 1985 I was doing lap dashes around Oran Park in a CM GLX 265 4 spd, which was more advanced in suspension tuning than the 1971 cars and surprised a lot of people with the speeds and lap times I achieved. A few red faces on those that asked where my fluffy dice were 🎲.
I have been informed from a reliable source that Fred Gibson was a scrutinneer for a classic car race and 3 Torana's came into the bay to be checked and passed. Without examining them he immediately said "Fail, fail, fail!" The mystified owners asked 'Why, how etc' and Gibson replied "Because I built them so I know they are not compliant with the rules!"
love it
Fabulous.
Ultimate charger✌
Wow what a buy thats mint
He basically paid nothing for both cars. It goes to show the right place at the right time.
I never understood why the US manufacturers sold the better cars in other countries. Chrysler with this car in Australia, Ford with the Cossie turbos in the UK, and Falcon XB in Australia. I would've loved to own one of these.
I know but I wish Ford had done the Future Coups in Australia in the XR-XY series, but only had sedans at the time.
I'm pretty sure the option was called the 'Track pack' which gave the buyer a few extras above the 'standard' E49 including the 36 gallon tank. I'm not sure the fake bonnet scoop was an option on the E49, it was available on the E38. The Bathurst Phase 3s also had 36 gallon tanks and ran the 1/4 mile in low 14s.
Awesome information mate. It great to hear information about these classics that are getting lost over time. We really appreciate the feedback.
@@AussieGarage No worries, I was living in the Western suburbs of Sydney when these cars were running around. Drove a couple of HO's one with the blue sticker on the engine and later on a couple of heavily modified L34 Toranas.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Absolute Stunner!
it is mate
This is the shit! Aussie icon 😍
A very cool story 😊
Glad you think so! Its great hearing these stories and how the car came into peoples ownership
Awesome car that, my mate Brian owned one identical to that with the twin fillers on either side, was a very fast car. Not sure where it is today though.
Very cool! The Valiant Chargers are very unrated in price but they a stunning place of Engineering.
@@AussieGaragenot sure about that but a good effort for australia now auto industry gone sad
The Hemi Orange doesn't quite look right, although its a particularly difficult color to photograph or video. It changes from a slightly redder Vitamin C Orange, to a darker burnt orange/red orange depending on the light and exposure.
And the black striping and the rear are meant to be matt black.
And whats the deal with the E38 bonnet cold air intake? Its not even functional theres no hole in the bonnet.
There are some people in this world who can fall in a bucket of poo, and come up smelling like a rose. This guy is one of them! 😊
that for sure
Pete Geoghegan had a special order Black GT HO
Awesome, that is great information. It a pity that Ford are not doing the verification letters anymore for vehicles. I would love to have more info on my van as well.
That’s 350 grand every day of the week !
Hey charger
My dads second dream car
I love these chargers as well
Always named Bathurst tank
It would've been 36 UK gallon(164L) not 36 USA gallon (136L) .
Gloss black outs do my head in, nice car.
Just a couple of things, it's a 35 gallon tank, and the underneath is supposed to be body colour, and not black. Lastly, they pulled 14.4 on the quarter, not 14.8
PS: If the Elliotts had anything to do with it, I'd be getting an x-ray on the chassis number, because it may be related to body number 174, controversial.
Thanks for the Information mate. I will pass this onto Terry for his knowledge.
Were not black outs matt to prevent glare reflections
Chargers didnt have the top speed to win to stop Lìfting off the ground modified chargers had thicker torsion bars
@@AussieGaragelast commodore 6 had 325 hp 325 kw
Under-rated cars. It's sad that Chrysler didn't sell anywhere near as many cars as GMH and Ford because the Valiants had merit. In the 1970's my father used to ride in the train everyday that went past the Tonsley Park factory where these were built and he said that there was a massive backlog of unsold cars parked outside in a padock. Some had been there so long that grass had begun to grow up through the bonnets. This exposure to the weather is probably why so many Valiants rusted quickly.
I wish I could go back and buy a ton of these cars, because I love them. They had a super cool design of these Valiant's. Do you have any pictures of your dad at the Factory mate. I would love to put them up on our community post.
@@AussieGarage Unfortunately not. He didn't work for Chrysler but for the S.A. Railways, just commuted past every day but sometimes had maintenance and repair jobs to do at the railway station. If I ever get a time machine organised I'll let you know and go halves with you on a buying spree!
I MIG welded VJ /VK centuras gallants in 74/75 as 19yo adult pay was $104 take home $86
I miss my e49
Do you have a photo of your E49 we can share?
@@AussieGarage no sorry
@@AussieGarage bought it in 1984 for $3500....if u can believe that
If only we got the hemi 6 and barra here in the states....
they are awesome mate, the Barra's are unbreakable once they are done.
You did have the basis of the Hemi 6. It started out as a U.S. Dodge truck motor.
4:49 "Trunk" ? You're an Aussie, its a boot.
The big surprise for me is unassisted brakes. The jack is still the same as the jack in my old VF. So being a Charger, is it a three speed or a four ??
I believe its a 4 speed but will check for you
A guy that raced earlier pacers said power boosters for brakes made it too easy to Lock the wheels under hard braking he could stop quicker no locking without booster chrysler went with his advice
@@AussieGarage The 4 on the guard stripe indicates a 4 speed Borg-Warner single rail with the dodgy nylon shifter pivot dome. Just the thing you dont want to let go as you slam it from 1st to 2nd. If it does, you'll find the shifter in the back seat. Been there, done that.
Does look like the 71 Dodge Demon
Definitely all from the same American Design base, just changed to suit Aussie standards
Very nice! Is the bonnet scoop not functional?
No it not a functioning one.
@@AussieGarage That's a little disappointing. I assume it's factory like everything else on this car. When I googled "Charger R/T E49" and "Bathurst Charger R/T E49", I see very little with the bonnet scoop. XW GTHO Phase II's do have a functioning scoop from what I see. Cheers.
@@lordhumungous7908 yes the XW were functioning and Terry was not sure in the previous owner had put it on or not. I lot of things like to happened to cars like this and sometimes to hard to find why. From what I seen the scopes weren't on there but some Valiant / Mopar fan have state that Valiant had these as standard scope of some car. I think it would be great if functioning.
@@AussieGaragethe bonnet scoop on the E49 was a dealer fitted option at the time. It doesn't have an I.D. plate code associated with it. A bit like the dealer fitted flare kits to the Torana's you could order from the dealer back in the day.
Loves a bit of mayo this bloke.
Quick ratio on steering was to make steering more precise not lighter in fact heavier ? GTS monaro had same the 6 didnt need psteering v8?
I am not sure myself but I know the Holden Sandman 6 that I had would have been fine without the Power Steering.
@@AussieGarage yes for sure and psteering in 1970s horrid too light and and 160kph dangerous no road feedback
I reckon one more gallon in that tank and the spare wouldn't fit😂
so true mate, it is in there tight and no room for luggage that's for sure.
A quick question, shouldn't be engine be corporate blue in colour ?
Not sure, might have do so research into this one.
E49 was 14.1 on the quarter mile
Awesome mate, thanks for the information. We appreciate it
How much do you want for the car ?
I am not sure if Terry wants to sell it at present, but we can find out.
that bonnet scoop is original valiant but on that car it has me scratching my head a bit...
I agree as the pictures of the BT racing didnt have that scoop PLUS when he lifted the bonnet it didnt show any use aka like a brake booster sooling scoop for the XW GT
the scoop may have put on by the previous owner but yes the racing one did not have them
He did have all the paperwork to verify the car but you never know if the dealer or factory or person add to car along the way sometimes.
The scoop was a dealership option
Odd car,, no black bonnet and beige trim. Wheels are too shiny, you cannot replicate the original machined finish short of machining them again.
They were 14.4 over the quarter and I have seen them run 14.3 in about 73 at the street drags .Ph 3 would run 14.8, I have seen them run also.
Weber did the carbs, Chrysler did the engines. With all their faults, bad valve gear, timing chains, heavy pistons and oil pump failures.
Win Bathurst, no. Even with good pit stops they were not fast enough unless some Fords and Toranas failed. And not enough did. Some Valiants did though! They are a very quick car, I have owned them. E38 with 4 speed and a VJ E49. Have driven E49 6 packs also. There chance was 72,, Fords only had 14x6 and Toranas 13x6. BUT they only has 3 speeds. The wider rims may have been their edge.
I dont believe big tanks are that rare, I saw plenty in period, even in a sedan!! I still know people with big tank cars they have owned since the 70s. And a Ph2 for the same period.
And yes I am in Adelaide and knew people working there in period. I have seen the tatty short wheelbase ute with the 340 in it.
Bathurst chargers flat out 135mph GT falcon nearly 150mph i believe toranas strength light weight better braking and easier on tyres
Correct. The engines weren't sent to Italy. A modified VG ute weighted to replicate the Chargers weight distribution was sent to Italy for Webber to tune the 45mm DCOE carbs. Also correct is that you could option the A84 "Track Pack" big tank on just about any Valiant based platform.
e49 was vh not vj.
Horrid steering wheel to big and soft grip worked loose
The old steering wheels definitely were not as comfortable as the new ones are. However, I love the look of them and the character it had
Love mine
I remember the charger they were the worst rust buckets out of all cars....
true, but they cool on the road.
Depends I owned a few
I Checked taillight seals
Fish oiled quarters inside doors didn't have rust
Problems
I work at a rust prevention business and one of the best products is lano spray. Lano is a self healing over time.@@victorpetroff830
RIP rust in peace
Standard front sway bar not competition
they sent (john.elliss) chysler engineer/factory race team manager with a vg 265 valiant pacer to london then he drove it to Italy weber factory ,there setting up the webers to suit engine..
Awesome that is great information, thanks heaps for sharing mate. It's great the hear the history about car manufactures and how they got things done back in the day.
I knew a guy who had a silver e38, EX bathurst raced sold in early 80's for 12k
No way he would be kicking himself now
