      How can Roland miss the very important point about 80's dance music. What made 80's dance music was playing the hardware live as a performance. It started with the TB303, a nightmare to program so you had to put the very basic of baselines then twist the controls over time, after that it kinda caught on.

    On the Mac at least, you can easily add the TR-09 (and other boutiques) to an aggregate audio device, along with your main audio interface. Works very well.

    • @AudioPilz
      @AudioPilz  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the input, how's latency and phase coherency in that method?

    • @st0rmchild
      @st0rmchild 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@AudioPilz I use a buffer of 128 samples at 44.1 kHz, so latency is around 10.7 ms, but in Ableton Live I found a MIDI clock offset of -12.6ms is perfect to get everything in sync. I have six boutiques and a System-8, all connected via aggregate device, and several other hardware devices all using MIDI clock. In the aggregate, I have "drift correction" enabled for all devices except my main audio interface. No pops or clicks, but it does use some CPU.

    • @kaitlyn__L
      @kaitlyn__L 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Audio MIDI Setup really needs to not be a hidden unsung gem for Mac producers! It’s also very useful for adjusting gain on a per-channel basis to keep your inputs in balance (not so useful for recording, useful for streaming though)

    For Roland's new gear i've had a work around for the interface "issue". Create an aggregate interface, basically a hub for all your interfaces under one name. This is how to use it on Mac, i'm sure there is a windows equivalent for a solution too but this has worked well for me. Worth looking up.

    • @robinr22

    • @The_Vile_Vortices
      @The_Vile_Vortices 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its definitely a good solution, but with one caveat - The system latency will only be as good as the worst device in the aggregated chain in my experience. But it works really well overall.

    Sounds really good actually without the OG "hiss sounds" that come with 1980s gear. Crank up the comp on bassdrum and snare. Use the little sub menu to adjust parameters. The only big issue is size and lack of more outputs...if you need that go TR-8S

    • @AudioPilz

    • @VanguardSound7
      @VanguardSound7 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AudioPilz Facts!
      Sampling up to 10+ different hits for every sound wasn't though. It took me a good three hours to do all the different pitches and decay settings on the kick, snare, all three toms, the hats, claps, cymbals, and rim shot.
      But it was well worth it.
      And I barely use them alone.
      They are mostly used to layer and build unique drum hits. Combining them with my Vermona DRM 1 MKlll or Yamaha RY-30.
      It was fun to learn the ins and outs of the machine in order to really understand what the O.G. process was. But the sounds are a bit dated. And can get lost in the mix unless it utilized very minimalistic instrumentation.

      @@AudioPilz The original TR-909 is the most convenient weapon to keep the crowd dancing during a live techno performance. It even has strange flaws in its sequencer timing which for some reason make it more groovy. I got a bunch of the boutiques. They're just cheap versions of classics that have gotten too expensive for hobbyists like me. They're not perfect and they're a pain to get a handle on but I actually ended up liking how they handled the individual drum outs because, with my cheap gear, it's easier for me to record with one audio cable out rather than one audio cable for each drum. For pros like the AudioPilz this thing probably sucks on toast. It's all about who you are and what you plan to do with it. Great video as always!

      Well, I tried that with two MX-1 and a TR-08 - never worked reliably, unit assignments were swapped around between sessions, had to rearrange everything in ableton too many times.... If only Roland had reached out to RME, they might have coded something useful, like, a multi device driver that allows you to have every boutique synth connected via USB and then aggregate that into a big fat single device (for Windows). Still love the boutiques, went the analog route after lots of frustration and today your comment (and this video) motivated me to give it another try!

    MUTE and SOLO modes make the TR-09 very useable for live use.
    I’m pretty sure the OG 909 didn’t have mute and solo modes.
    I’m not that fussed not having separate outs to be honest.
    The size of it is bloody practical.
    I have owned 2 x TR-909 in the past but just sampled the voices of it in the end and sold them before the internet and ebay sent the prices crazy high. They were superbly built though and looked awesome. Those were the days when everyone went nuts for the Alesis HR-16 “real sounds” and velocity pads.
    The Boutique 09. I love it. Bought for £270 second hand.
    Wish it had square USB B or USB C instead of Micro USB power. They look very flimsy & breakable. Oh well, it least it can run on batteries which again is very handy.
    As you say the dedicated trigger out is great and let’s you free up the Rim. I also love the way the TR-08 and 09 let you program in 32nd notes for trap fills etc. The originals never let you do that and that is much more important to me than separate outs.
    Shame Roland discontinued this to be honest. It’s one of the best Boutiques and sound wise it’s very, very close to the original. I find the bass drum super usable. Probably has more attack click than on the original which I prefer and you can dial that in nicely.
    Do love the vids of course, sometimes wish they went longer into “proper” detailed reviews. Guess there are other channels for that.
    Oh and guys, Florian is right. The TB-3 rocks.

    Roland boutiques in a nutshell: Imagine if Fender stopped making electric guitars in 1959. Then they started putting out portable transistor organs with Guitar Hero-like keyboards on the necks. Then the 1980s come, and they create a device that can somewhat recreate the sound of a guitar, but it's tiny, plasticky, and stringless. This would be okay if they didn't still call these devices Strats, Telecasters, and P-Basses.
    Better yet, imagine if Yamaha stopped making acoustic grands when they started making their Clavinovas.
