- I managed to convince myself that sewing a bunch of clothing as fast as possible would be a fun experiment... and promptly decided to pour over design details, cut out massive patterns, and hand gather numerous ruffles. I'm just not good at speed sewing ya'll!

Regarding the wrap dress: it's not you, it's the pattern. The Big 4 pattern companies consider a B-cup to be "industry standard", and any body that doesn't fit that standard is going to need pattern adjustments, especially around the Boobal Area. Honestly, your wrap dress came out way better than it should have.
That's so good to hear! Now that I've used two different wrap dress patterns and had the same issues in the chest region, I really want to try making my own from scratch to see if I can delete that problem.
@@gettheetothestitchery Wrap dresses are notoriously difficult to draft. I'd recommend starting with something simpler, but you do strike me as a "go hard or go home" kind of girl. 😘

I haven't been a B cup since before jr high, and it's one of the reasons I sew skirts for myself (the other being that finding a plus size mid-calf skirt in a natural fiber with elastic waist and pockets is....nearly futile) but almost never shirts, blouses, or dresses.
I was looking for patterns at the joanns while there was a sale the other day. I had to put all of them back after reading the measurements. I'm a size 3x with DDD ( or bigger) boobs and all the patterns had the largest bust size at 40". My bust size is 60". No go. So I found a pattern on Amazon that actually would fit me.
You know, that white peasant dress with the ruffles is going to be a PERFECT almost petticoat to add some fullness to your skirts too without adding it to your waist. It's the perfect under-garment, and the seams won't show no matter where the waist sits. It's actually kinda unexpected genius.

15:55 regarding that yellow dress: if you still ahve those little triangles, you could add them in the side seams as gores (reverse gussets) and have a bit more room at the waist before the top teir.
And the left over piece of the printed for two circle skirts: waistband elastic!!!
The last dress, that you don’t like, looks very flattering. Most flattering of all.
That scene from Mulan, though! 😂😂 My daughters and I reference it whenever we are "incensed" about something trivial. But my favorite part is the facial expression of the horse!
I think the wrap dress looks good on you. If you want to twirl try sewing a swirl skirt. I have found some tutorials online. Also, I had a dress in the sixties that was a circle skirt but hung from a yolk which covered my shoulders. It was full. If I grabbed each side seam I could raise them to shoulder level and you could see it was a semi circle, one on the front and one on the back. It was great for twirling also.

OH MY GOD FINALLY! I have been searching for those sleeves for YEARS, after getting some on a store bought top, but I never knew what they were called to even search for them properly. Butterfly sleeves.

If you feel like the waist is too tight. Undo the side seam, or cut a slit, and add those "extra" triangles in to make the waist/hip larger.

Circle skirt, add some elastic in the waistband that's a but smaller than your waistband

The blue wrap dress is a gem!
I think that sometimes the goal for "Sew a [garment] in only [time]" is to help the inexperienced feel like the finished item is achievable. It can be disheartening to want to create something but not know if you're going to be able to complete it in the time you have available, especially if you know you're going to be "slow" as a beginner.
The circle skirt with the sewing design would fit much more securely if you added a few belt loops and wore a belt with it. Or elastic, but different belts would be cute!
Ever hear of Stretch an Sew classes? Several years ago I went 50 miles to be taught. Loved it. Best, fitted, most fun wardrobe ever!!! But time moved on and so did I. 💖

One thing I would absolutely advocate is figuring out what colours work with your hair and skin, I paid for a session with a consultant and was blown away by what she came up with! Totally worth the money, now I stick with that colour palette which makes fabric buying so much easier!
I found your channel and I'm so happy I did! I've sewn clothes, curtains, decor, slipcovers and more. From infant to men's suits. All those wonderful years on my Sear's Kenmore Avocado Green zig-zag machine (which still works) and a Pfaff 1222E that I bought in 1980! Sadly the Pfaff has gone to sewing-machine heaven. It gave stellar service for over 40 years! Sewing was a hobby, but also a necessity because of economics. Like your duvet skirt, I could buy a plus sized dress at a thrift store and create just about anything. I didn't join the US Air Force to be a millionaire!!
Now, for my question. Fancy stitches, like embroidery, are not needed. But useful stitch patterns to make items. I MUST have a machine which upper and lower tensions are set automatically by the machine. A walking feed dog and a self threading needle. Easy button holes are a must. Can you, or your subscribers give me their input on what machine would be best suited to my wish list. Tension is the tippy top, then button holes. Everything else is gravy! My budget isn't tight, but if the best machine is in the $3000+ USD range, I'll just use my Avocado Green Kenmore! I'll save up to buy the best machine, even if it takes months or a year to save up that money. I understand Bernina and Pfaff are the same company. I'd rather have users of the actual machines and not a salesperson plugging their machine. Thank you in advance for your help!
Patterns? They are great guides, but I prefer to think outside the envelope!
Hopefully a fellow viewer can give you some good recommendations, because I'm afraid I cannot! I'm still using a really simple Singer model for beginners, so I am very uninformed on machines.
Have you thought about a Janome 3500?

I used to be in a hurry all the time, working full time in big tech, lots of pressure and after hours studying. I also used to attempt to speed sew and most of it I never wore. Now I am retired and my favorite activity is hand sewing! Yeh!
The purple butterfly sleeves are SO CUTE! I love them! 💜 And the purple ruffle on the peasant dress! Ah!

I needed this today. I've been itching to make all the things but I have little kids and trying to make even one garment takes ages. I did grab the McCalls knit pattern after your last video and have that slated as my next project because I need more comfy in my life.

Loved your video thank you! Wearing the peasant dresses under the pinafore is such a great idea. I really liked the purple circle skirt too- I was thinking to make it feel more secure you could use it as the bottom half of a dress - maybe sew it to a knit jersey bodice and eliminate need for zips , it’s such a pretty colour and looks lovely twirling

I enjoy these explorations. it would be great to see you remake/repurpose the lower rated stuff.
When I started learning about pattern drafting and how to adjust ready made patterns I learnt to slow down, enjoy the process, and of course my end result improved. I found that all the prep, making a toile, fitting adjustments etc were essential to getting a beautiful, well fitting garment. By the time I cut into the fashion fabric I know it’s going to fit, funnily enough the actual process of sewing the final garment became quicker!
I have a library of well fitting patterns that I make over and over again but because I understand how to make the changes to the pattern I have a whole wardrobe of garments.
Learning to draft and fit frees you from commercial patterns!
Instead of elastic for the top of the peasant dress, you could use a fabric tie. That way you can change the size of the neckline. Just a suggestion. 😊

You can find these for kiddos as a "pillowcase dress" make a casing at the folded end (so the pretty end is a ready made hem) and sew down the side a few inches for arm holes. Use ribbon at the top and it becomes the gathering and the straps with adorable bows all in one.
I actually think the blue dress looks lovely on you, I also love the skirts and pinafore layered over the “blouses”

My current project is a pattern in an envelope that looks like any other. Only difference is the pieces are printed in color right on a solo piece of fabric so all one needs to do is cut it out and sew it together. It's a sweet apron, simple, and so small I could never wear it. I got it at Goodwill and when I finish it I'll donate it back. I made a copy of the pattern because one never knows. I was afraid to preshrink it, just ironed flat and got to cutting. It's fun so far.

So the striped dress is purple ruffle use the same purple material to make a corset or a top border or Steve border if not cut some of the back panel out and make a back fixed belt like its own to the bag steam and wraps around

Something a lot of people don't know about the main pattern companies is that the size on the pattern envelope is a general size. If you look at the pattern pieces they will generally tell you the finished measurements. So if you go with the envelope size you might be a 14, but the inside pieces you might be a 12. Many makers have been complaining to the companies to rectify that so we are not wasting our time with ill fitting results. The other thing people are trying to have them put on the envelope is more measurements....like what is your length from shoulder to waist. AND what their general block sizing is they are using.
I've learned to make garments easier to produce by not following the prescribed instructions. I construct the skirt and hem it. Then I sew the sleeves and plackets/buttons/cuffs/hems before I add them to the bodice. I make felled seams so it takes forever to make anything. I guess on knits you wouldn't have to do it. I just got a new Singer that has zigzag stitch and is supposed to sew knits, two things my '29 Singer can't do. I can see myself in new directions if I can find an affordable fabric store. I love your channel.

What if you added the triangles you cut from the yellow peasant dress to the side seams at the hips as gore's? Zero waste pattern and a better fit!

I thought the wrap dress was lovely but I do get that when something just doesn't feel right.. it just doesn't. I don't feel it for wrap dresses either. Those sleeves really sell it though.

I love that you try stuff and sometimes it works better than others but you don't give up. I just tried making some trousers. Iused some old ones that I cut up for a template but oops, I'm podgier now so they are still not finished and defiitely a 4 out of 10 at best. Its such a delight to find you I am also a rescue material from charity shops and combining materials and after watching you I made my first drafted pattern and it worked I'm so delighted. thankyou so much. but I do wonder why you don't zigzag the edges after seaming to stop the edges fraying .

With the circle skirt, what I personally would have done is make one skirt using both circles gathered at the waist (I think it's called a dirndl skirt?) And then add a non-stetch fabric to back the waistband so it can handle the extra weight of the fabric also, sewing the two circles together will leave two side seams which would be a perfect place to add pockets and while I'd probably just add a side zipper since that's what I'm used to sewing, itd totally also work as a split side skirt. An alternative waistband method would be to use a sturdier and/or less stretchy fabric than that of the skirt itself maybe in black to tie into the design and also give illusion of a smaller waist since it's something I'm always looking for in my skirt designs cause I'm a big fan of a super poofy 50s silhouette
I can’t speed sew, anytime I give myself a deadline or try to rush I pay for it and take several extra hours fixing some mistake… Most recently trying to hurriedly add trim to an apron I got sewing machine oil on it that I could not get out with any remedy I knew.. tried one recommended from a TH-cam vid and it just bleached all the color from the fabric (oil stain was still there). SO I got to spend 2 weeks researching, getting supplies, and doing proper pre dyeing prep (scouring and mordant) then re-dye the linen before reattaching the trim.. stain is still there, have to figure something out to hide it.
I cook the way you sew. I look at a recipe or two, "fix" what's "wrong" with them, and cook up food.
I'd like to develop my sewing skills so I can sew without patterns. Partly due to the prices, and partly because those patterns very rarely produce a good fit for me.
I liked the purple dress and the teal pinafore. Do feel like the teal one could use a little wider front bodice piece but that may be not the style.
You need a gathering foot for your machine.

I need to learn more about hemming. How did you hem the butterfly sleeves?? And the neck? I have no idea how to hem that sort of stuff. I've tried just a few basic t-shirt type necks and once a boat neck which had an inner flap so that was easy. But I really need to expand my skills. And it's really holding me back from doing more garment sewing, which I really want to do more of!
The sleeves I roll hemmed (so just double turning the edge and sewing along it to hold it down) but the neckline has a binding on it - so a separate strip of fabric that you stitch to the raw edge, right side to right side, then fold upwards and top stitch down so all the raw edges are inside!

There is a ruffling foot that would have made those ruffles go lickety split. Worth every penny. A used one from ebay would work fine.

Peasant dress - can you pull the gathered neckline up onto your shoulders?
If you had cut an opening on both of the printed circle skirts, and cut the hole for the waist at half the diameter of your waist, you could have joined both circle skirts and made one of your really full 720 skirts.

Love the sewing machine skirt print. Also like the two tone purple dress. However for myself l would have done a different sleeve. I am not a fan of that kind of sleeve.
I like the strippy curtain dress the slightly longer in the back so you can sit down without showing your butt is a style so it's fine.
Is definitely better with a belt and now that you have put the contrasting ruffle on you could even just make a built-in sash to stash it where you want when you have decided a preferable placement
Given that you said you post your videos out of order, does this mean that when you said you wanted these clothes for a secret thing that might not happen, you were thinking of your trip to France, which is currently happening?
And I'm thinking that maybe since you don't really want the wrap dress as a dress, and given how light the fabric is, maybe you could treat it as a negligee/dressing gown, to wear over your nightclothes as you eat a croissant before changing to head out for a day of sightseeing?
That is exactly what I was thinking of! It wasn't set in stone yet that I was going, but I couldn't help prepping some cute clothes just in case!
To much material I'm the back pulling down the top back, but it was really nice. The other dress with very drippy pockets reminds me of the truck on the highway with a mans personal lower body parts dangling down. The penifor dress is beautiful but may I add a tad to much material. I wonder if she even reads these comments lol
