Instead of that third gadget, I do the same type of thing with just a robe tie, elastic banding the ends, and I can then cross the ties in back, up and around, and tie the ends together on top of my head. It’s a tighter curl - still may not be as good as foam rollers for your style - but it’s also more comfortable and secure to sleep in. I also have THICK hair and can vouch for this method if you dampen/product your hair properly.
I can also vouch for this as a fellow thick haired girlie. I am partial to finger combing after rather than brushing, so I'm not sure what that result would look like. I tend to put it up at ~90% dry and it's always set by morning. I imagine it would be just as fast as foam rollers with practice, but sometimes you just have to follow the old adage "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". 🤷🏼♀️😉
Thisssss, def recommend something like the rope of a robe or something cause I have really long hair and decided to try the 3rd one and it did NOT deliver like it does with just using a rope. My hair just slide right off during the night and it was so uncomfortable.
The robe tie hack was the inspiration for that tube thing. Like any good method using things you have lying around the house, someone's gotta come along and ✨️monetize✨️ it.
My Grandma did pin curls pretty much her whole life (she grew up in the 40's and 50's). I remember living with her for a few years as a teenager and her telling me, "you know you did it right if they look like little cow pies" 😂 RIP grandma❤
Because I grew up in the 1950s, AND my mom was a licensed beautician whose shop was attached to our house, i'd like to clarify one thing :D PINcurls are done with PINS, I.E., Bobby-Pins. 'Bobby' refers to the fact that they were originally designed to SET YOUR HAIR in a BOB, yeah. They are MUCH easier to use, and a piece of cake to remove, hooray! Try them, and you'll agree. Also, they don't leave Flat Dents on the hair once it's dry. The steel clips were made for securing hair rollers to the scalp-hair before going under the hairdryer; they were more secure than those plastic pic thingys, but care had to be taken Not to have those actually touching the skin, as they really got hot under the dryer. Veteran hairstylist here (43 yrs). Try using 2 bobby pins on each of your pin curls. It's sooooo much easier to remove them, plus it's way more comfortable to sleep on. You have such beautiful hair. Every one of these methods turned out fantastic on you, although the "this thing" I felt just left your hair more frizzy than anything. I think for your hair & lifestyle, foam rollers are really the way to go. You get a beautiful style with minimum effort. The pin curls turned out absolutely beautiful, but they really are time consuming & a hassle to put up & take down. We ain't got time for that! 🤣 I first came to your channel eons ago to see what all the young, hip women were doing as far as hairstyles & stayed for the bright bubbly personality.......& watching someone who adults about the same way I do. 💖💖💖
Bobby bins are nicer today sleep with, but I find them difficult to use with this length of hair - the rolls get too thick for the pins. So I bought those clips instead.
I second only using 2 bobby pins for pin curls. That's what I do and it's more comfortable. My go-to is tightly French braiding my hair when it's damp, sleep on it, take it out, shake it loose then add mousse. Super easy and I love the way it looks.
I was going to suggest the same thing but I would like to add boar bristle brush will help form the pin curls better (found that out when I used to wear the buggers in my pin up days)...and the that thing seems to work better when you use it as a third strand of almost a braid thats where I've seen people get the best use out of it...but yes its def for loose curls
So…here is 1 you could try, and easier to sleep on. Take a bedsheet (old 1😊)and rip some strips up 6-8 inches long-1 inch or so wide. Wrap your hair around it the same way you do with rollers and just tie a half knot to hold in place. 6 girls in my family. My mom and dad did this often in the 50-60’s Love your hair👍
For pin curls (as someone who does them every night), one method that I find is much easier and quicker is to use the end of a blush brush (or any tube-like utensil), wrap my hair around it (in rather small sections so it doesn’t fall out), remove the hair from it and pin it with hair clips 😊
Mary, I use pincurls too. I always have trouble keeping the ends "in". I'm definitely going to try your suggestion.💖 Also, I use bobby pins, rather than what Rachel was using, which gets caught in my longer locks.
My mother only did her hair with pincurls. She washed her hair once a week and the pin curl ritual would begin. She used bobby pins and a rat tooth comb to separate her hair and she did it wet. Very precise. I watched this every week of my life. She had baby fine hair and this gave her body and the impression that she had more hair.
My grandmother did pin curls too, she had a short haircut and I think relatively fine hair that was white by the time she was 30, I think the pin curls gave it some nice body and controlled curls.
My mother did the exact same routine - and I’m an ethnic girlie! (Creole/black from New Orleans, to be exact). I think the pin curls on wet hair once-a-week routine is truly a cross-cultural phenomenon, and I love that! Actually, probably a lot healthier for hair than all that heat with electric curling wands. I watched my mom do it during my childhood in the late 70s to early 80s, but I’m sure she was doing that routine even decades earlier.

as a girlie who uses the "thing" daily heres a few modifications that really helped me if you feel like trying it again. 1. for the length of hair you might need the normal thinner one. it makes the curls tighter 2. use the unicorn method! its so comfy to sleep in and doesn't create the weird v in the back. also feels way more secure so you don't have to worry about it falling out or loosening while you sleep.

It’s killing me that you won’t see this comment - cause the Heatless curling rod is INCREDIBLE when done right. You don’t need product - and if you do, it’s extremely minimal. It works best on hair that is just the slightest bit moist - like a mist of water combed through and that’s it. Your wrapping was also too loose and started too low. My hair is the same length as yours and is thick and has a heavy wave. I do this method often and get the prettiest softest, flounciest curls. I hope you’ll consider watching a few tutorial videos and try it again. It’s such a great little tool when you get the hang of it. ☺️
Y’all are obviously trying to create a texture and silhouette that is MODERN. This is a vintage style channel and brushing through curls is mandatory to get a midcentury look. But yes I believe that it’s true, any tool you practice with is going to get easier over time, but she probably knows that already
@@maddieb.4282 Not trying to offer tips on creating the style - just how to use the Heatless curler in general. You can still use a brush to shape the curls into vintage styles - I do it often. The curling rod won’t work with heavy product (as we see in the video.) The hair should also start out at least 98% dry. Otherwise you get frizz and crunchiness. I use my Heatless curler frequently and have gotten it down to a science. Rachel has the perfect hair length and texture for it. It was just the execution that was off.
I feel like all 3 methods would have turned out much nicer with a light mist, little to NO product and either NOT brushing (that sounded horrible everytime she did it😬) Or to just finger comb or at the very least get the proper brush for brushing out curls - I feel like that brush was absolutely not the right choice, sadly it seems to kill all work she did to make those curls.
as someone who uses "the third thing" every night on dry hair, i take a piece from the front, then from the back, crossing them over the tube in a kind of X shape (like a braid where the foam always stay in the middle). it makes it much more secure and tighter curls. but they are more modern shape, like from a curling wand, not vintagey. there are tons of tutorials on tiktok!
As a curly-haired person, I have no functional reason to watch this video, but I will gladly watch twenty one minutes of Rachel Maksy teaching me how to curl my hair because it’s Rachel Maksy.
curly here too, but the hair around my ears is straight! Going to try some foam rollers to help give it any kind of texture because it looks weird. My hair is very fine, so can't just tuck it away :(

I have a hack for the plastic parts on the foam rollers! I saw on a video to take the plastic parts off and replace them with strips of t-shirt. It's stretchy and instead of clicking the plastic parts, you just tie the strip of T-shirt and it makes it 100% more comfortable. And as an added bonus, you'll look kinda like an octopus or Medusa.
@@dopaminedrought395 No, it will unroll half a turn. However, if you don't make it very tight, the "kink" from the plastic is lessened. If the section is dense and you're trying to roll it really tight the plastic does mroe work, making the line more obvious.
gonna be honest, the noodle is my favorite overnight sleep curl! even on my side. something to remember, rachel's been doing curlers for YEARS. that's obviously gonna go the best when its the one you're the most practiced with lmao. foam rollers and noodle are also for creating two very very different types of curls!

Thank you for saying out loud how uncomfortable it is to sleep in curlers. Other videos make it sound easy, like there should be two dozen soft pillows clipped to my hair, inviting me to a refreshing beauty slumber! I usually only use curlers for special events, when it's already hard enough to sleep- nerves, or maybe a hotel room. Sleep deprivation as a beauty tool to help your big day go just perfectly! Ugh. I am happier to just get up early and leave the curlers in until show time. I looked a little like a poodle last time, but at least I slept!
Pin curls, secured with crossed, old fashioned u-shape hair pins (the good ones, not the drug store ones that bend). It's *almost* like you don't have a set in your hair at all. Second best is a soft rag curl (I use fat, satin scrunchies as "rags" when I'm really lazy.) Sleep comfort is a high priority for me with hair sets - foam rollers are great....but I never use them. They're one of the worst to sleep on. (Also, there are insane folks out there that sleep on things like perm rods or Velcro curlers and that's just not right!)
@@TruCatmy mom had this crazy idea to have me use Velcro rollers, with clips, on my hair in high school. My hair was already curly. In theory, I got bigger, softer curls, but they were even more prone to frizzing. And they SUCKED to sleep on.

curl brush out tip! if you brush your hair starting at the bottom of a section and work your way up to the roots, it's a lot easier, avoids major tangles, and is so much gentler on your hair! if you start at the root, it'll tighten any potential knots forming as you brush down. i always use that method when i have to dry brush my natural curls, and it makes the process way less painful 😊
Same. I've given different curling methods a try, but they're so obviously designed for straight-ish haired folks. My hair only knows one way to be and thoroughly resists any other taming methods. It's lion's mane of unruly curls or nothing!
I think it would be cool if you used foam rollers with those pin curl patterns, or get a book of roller set patterns and try different ones out. I would be so down for that. You could also do a video making your own satin hair rollers.
A couple of years ago I watched one of your videos on how you set your hair in foam rollers. I am in my 70s and found my usual method of blow drying my hair wasn't working like it used to. So--I started doing foam rollers and let my hair grow long in the back (yeah, I have a mullet now) and I LOVE it! I, like you, put a scarf on my head like my Mom used to do when I was a kid. I don't curl the back long hair, I always wear it up with large barrettes that I started making from thrifted jewelry. I have a new passion and I love it. My girlfriends tease me but I'm happy and that's what counts(and it looks good, too!). Thank you!
When I was young and had long hair, I experimented as you did and discovered that if I pulled all my hair up into a scrunchee on top of my head, then wrapped sections in foam curlers so they were piled on top of my head, it was easy to sleep as I wasn't sleeping on the curlers. In the morning, it was easy to take everything down, and because my hair spent the night "up", it had decent lift after I took everything down and styled my hair. Shortcut: if you don't want to sleep in curlers, when you get up, use a curling iron to warm-curl a section of hair, then immediately wrap it around a foam roller - repeat until you have curled everything. After your hair cools completely on the rollers, it should behave as though you slept in them overnight.

glad I'm not the only one cringing slightly at the curls being brushed, I get that it's to create a specific style but it's so inbuilt in my brain that unless you want pain or to look like you've been electrocuted you just don't brush curls like that

Me: watches video about curling hair with naturally curly hair like IM HERE FOR RACHEL YALL also for brushing out curls I suggest a wide tooth comb and not a brush, a brush will frizz up and seperate the curls too much whilst a comb you have a little more control over how the hair separates and way less frizz
Rachel and I both have naturally curly hair but use these techniques to style and control our natural curls in order to create a vintage silhouette and style. Vintage “curls” are SUPPOSED to be brushed out. It’s not “frizz,” it’s volume from the brushed out waves, and pomade smoothed over the top will fix any little frizz. Not brushing out the curls for a vintage look would look absolutely ridiculous tf

To any short-haired folks wondering, finger waves are your best bet if it's very short, pin curls, finger waves if your hair's longer than your ears. You can also see where scrunching it with curl cream gets you. Pin curls are way too much fuss for anything longer than shoulder length, as you can see here, but they're such a nice thing for us short-haired people that don't have a lot of styling options.
I got bored once and decided to pin curl my straight waist long hair. After 2+ hours with me wondering why the hell I was doing this the whole time, the many, many, many pin curls were finally in. The result was amazing, with (mostly) beautiful bouncy curls. I didn't brush out the curls, so they stayed in pretty good shape for a few days, which is a miracle since my hair is hard to curl.
Try is again when you are 65+ with shorter, thinner, gray hair. You'll have a better chance to enjoy the results. I pin-curl when I want to do something special. Wishing Mom could see me doing this retro thing I could have scoffed at when younger.

I used one of the satin curling noodles, but was inspired by someone using socks to try using socks in the same way you use the satin noodle and let me tell you, it's better. One sock on either side of your head, tied in with those curly no crease hair ties, then you half the hair you have on each side and helix wrap it around. when you get to the bottom you can use the open end of your sock to flip it over your ends and protect them and put the hair tie over the flipped part. I got SO MANY compliments from people that they loved the way it looked. It's comfier to sleep in too.

back in high school I used to sleep in foam rollers every day... I literally could not imagine subjecting myself to that again. I do the third method with a bathrobe tie and my bangs in foam rollers with pipe cleaners instead of the plastic clips and it's infinitely more comfortable and still pretty. my sleep is more important than the cuteness of foam roller cocker spaniel hair edit: the third method gets so much easier with experience! you can get it more secure with the back of your hair by wrapping it tighter and following the shape of your head. with a little practice, it's so so fast to do. a bathrobe tie also makes the curls a lot tighter-- I used to do it with a satin ribbon when my hair was shorter for even tighter curls. highly rec if you're cool with a little trial and error to find your preferred strategy
You definitely did give me inspiration with the tube thing (3rd method) if I want to go to a costume party as Ahsoka. You are doing the Lord's work for us hair challenged gals.
Rachel, I implore you to look into the brand “Cozy Curlers.” I started using them a few months ago after seeing some other people with long ass hair have success with them. They’re essentially foam rollers without the plastic rod, they have a net attached to the end of the roller that you wrap around your hair, after it’s wrapped around the curler. They’re much more comfortable to sleep and then anything else I’ve tried, and they actually dry somewhat quickly because they’re just foam, as opposed to the sock method. PLUS you really can change how the curls come out purely by how tightly you wrap the hair, and when the curls settle it’s soooo pretty.
Another fan of @CozyCurlers - in fact just got some for my niece for her birthday! Easy to use and no plastic clips to fight closing (I have thick hair) or to hurt when I’m sleeping.
The 'Thing' seems to be pretty similar to sock curls. I used to do sock curls every night but cut my hair too short to keep doing it. It's getting long enough to start doing it again and I'm so happy. It definitely takes some getting used to to get it right.
Im still trying to make it work. But my problem is my hair doesnt dry. If it wrap jt up around the thing its going to stay wet. If i put product in then it will still be wet on the inside and dry on the outside and then it falls right oht
I tried sock curls so many times and I would just end up with weird dents and and nooks and crannies instead of a actual curls. I actually get better results and nice beachy waves of I go to bed with my hair 50-75% wet, sleep on it free over a regular towel, wake up to a humid day and didn't brush it at all (can you tell I have straight hair 😂)

(Not that you asked for advice but) I find it also looks better with dry hair and changing patterns of wrapping as you go. (All hair grabbed from the front goes backwards around the socks, all hair grabbed from the back goes forward around the sock)

@@dessieangel1021 Yeah I watched a couple different ones from her. But I legit can't sleep with rollers at night. So usually I just use the 'Unicorn' style of heatless curls. That seems to be working good enough for now.
In the 80's I used to curl my hair with kleenix. I used a big box of them and used them sort of like the foam rollers on damp hair, NOT wet, for obvious reasons. Accordion fold them, sort of, long-ways and then roll your hair (smaller sections than for foam rollers) and then gently tie them when you're curled all the way up. Wrap in a scarf. EASY to sleep in. More time consuming to take out than rollers, but if you're careful you can keep the tissues to use again. I did it based on what my granny and aunties told me about when they were young and used strips of cloth rags to curl their hair. I really enjoyed your video. This is the first time I've come across your content.
Ohhh I did that last year and it gave fab results if you ignored user error. I can never keep a scarf on my head though, so probably didn't work out as good as yours. Wonder if kitchen roll would work for a sturdier method!
I've actually found that having my hair wet worsens my chances with overnight curls! The best method I've found is to wash my hair, let it fully dry (air dry or blow dry, whichever), and then put it in the curlers before going to bed.

I've seen some people have better results with the satin heatless curler when they lay it along the center of their head (think like a unicorn) and wrap it more like a normal french braid rather than doing the two pigtail style wraps. Seems a lot nicer to sleep in if you are a side sleeper too. As someone vaguely considering getting a set to try, it would be interesting to see your experiences with trying that wrap pattern!
I'm 62 years old. If I can't get my hair sorted 10 minutes after washing it, or 5 minutes when I gey dressed in the morning - it isn't happening. My late mother used rollers a lot and pin curls for any short bits. She got used to sleeping in them for 30 years. I like my sleep too much to contemplate it. Your results match hers. She loved her Carmen heated rollers in the 1970s. Heated them up whilst she showered and rough dried her hair then put them in for 20 minutes as she put on her make up and dressed for a night out. Beats sleeping in them.
This was fun to watch! That said, I think when evaluating the effectiveness of the different techniques, I definitely agree that any technique you've been doing for years and can do mindlessly is going to typically be quicker and easier than the first time you use a new method.
I mean this with all genuine affection, that final curler would be great for a scifi/fantasy hairdo. Especially after you'd shaped it with the hairscarf, someone could really make that work!
As a person with massive natural curls, this was interesting to see the lengths that people without curly hair go through to get curly hair. Sure, I may not be able to dry brush my hair ever but I'll take that over having to sleep on something uncomfortable.
Honestly, most of the people I've known that were big into doing styles and techniques like this had natural curls, I guess they just wanted to try different styles outside of what their hair did naturally.
You have no idea of the neck crick an 8 year old girl has on picture day at school because mom forced her to wear foam rollers. Why is my smile so weird? Well, lemme tell ya.
Okay, remember the Wrap Snap and Go from TV a billion years ago??? THOSE are the best rollers and they are so comfy to sleep in! You can do a full vintage-style set pattern for the floof, or for more modern curls you can do what I do which is panic an hour before I have to leave for something, spritz some water, throw my hair into a high ponytail, separate the ponytail into 4-6 random chunks with the rollers, and then take it all down when I get out of the car wherever I'm going. Always get compliments on my hair!
i tried the 'thing' before, i've found that doing a unicorn braid by positioning the sausage front to back rather than to either side, and effectively treating the thing as the third strand of a french braid (its slightly 🤏more complicated than that - tutorials explain it better) works better for me as a side sleeper, because you don't have a weird lump on either side of your head, and I've found it curls your hair better.
genuine question, how is that any different or better than just doing a french braid and sleeping on it? My default hair method for years was just to plait my damp hair in various ways before bed and then it'd be wavy/curly the next day, just not sure what the "thing" is actually adding?
@@emmao6578 wrapping hair around the 'thing' makes it more of a circular ringlet, whereas just braiding it will only kinda make it wavy. There's not a whole lot of difference really, but I find using the 'thing' also makes the ends nice and curled, where in a braid they would just be straight after where the hair tie was.
@@millyboop2047 I have a method for fastening braids that results in waves all the way to the end! It would be easier to show than describe, but I think I can convey it properly if I first describe the more normal way of using a hair tie. So, to fasten hair with a hair tie, you set the loop around the strand of hair, and then you twist once so there's a loop around the hair connected to a newly formed loop. Set this new loop around the hair, twist, and repeat until all of the hair band is coiled around the hair and you can't manage to form a new loop. Normally you're aiming to cluster these loops directly next to each other, so they're neat-looking and fasten tightly. However, you can instead choose to set each new loop you twist enough further down the hair that you can see the gap between. This forms a pattern of visible criss-crosses with a core of hair peeking through. Now, instead of a thin hair tie, let's use a scrunchie. And instead of moving each loop to go around the hair, pull the hair through each loop, so instead of criss-crosses around a fairly straight hair core, the hair curves around the thickness of the scruchie. My experience has been that you can get the bottom of the fastening much closer to the end of the hair this way-- maybe half an inch left out, most of the time, rather than the two or three inches I normally wind up with using the normal method. And the way it naturally settles draws the very end up into the scruchie over the course of the day/night. Then when the hair is released, there's no point where the wave suddenly stops, leaving a straight end; it's wavy all the way. I have had some occasions where the wave from the scruchie was much more strongly defined than the braid-wave, though.
Here to vouch for the last curling noodle method used....I recently bought one and have used it five times. It works GREAT! My hair never keeps curls and I can't stand sleeping in traditional curlers, but this thing is damn comfy! Sure, that first night is terrifying, thinking it's gonna fall out and be pointless, but once you learn that it won't...all's good! There is a fine line between wrapping your hair too tight (and looking like Shirley Temple) or too loose (and having made only loose waves that fall easily). I've even taken a shower in the morning, dried my hair, put on some mousse and hair sprayed once done. Then after only two hours I had lovely curls. Just remember, it's much easier to claw clip the noodle down while wrapping and wrap your hair as close to your head as possible for tighter curls! (I tuck the excess noddle ends in the back to sleep, also looking very Star Wars-esq)....But hey, to each their own! May not work great on all hair, but yeah, works awesome for me!
Do you roll them the same way she did? I think the woman in my childhood did it differently. I think they would put a finger close to and parallel to the scalp. Then wrap the hair around the finger, starting at the scalp end. When they got to the bottom end, rotate the finger and put the tip on the scalp. The hair slides off and is right at the scalp and in a good position to pin.

I'm 79 and have fine, very straight hair (what was called string straight hair). I have worn it long most of my life, it is now down below my waist. Back in the early 60's I wore it in a long Page Boy (while everyone else was teasing their hair and wearing Bubbles and Bee Hives). I got the Page Boy by winding all the curls towards my face in two rows and I used 2 Bobbie Pins to hold each curl. It came out soft and I loved it and was easy to sleep on.
Bobby pins would have worked a lot better for pin curls.. theres no place for the hair to get stuck between! I used to do pin curls all the time when my hair was shortersand never use those kind of clips. Also, dont use the brush to pick out your curls - get a pick or a wide brush comb - the brush is what introduces the frizz - a pick would just separate them :) I used to love sitting and talking to my grandma when she and my mom would work to pin curl her hair together .. One of my favorite memories My hair is pretty much down to my waist and naturally wavy (actually curly at shorter links) so I just put my hair up in a sock bun or curls after a shower and pin curl a few of the strands that dont fit in and call it a day or if Im being super lazy braid it - both require a quick run through with the blow dryer in the morning if I want it fully dry and some gel either way but it works for me - probably because my hair isn't pin straight and has a curl pattern its working with.
Shes been doing these hair styles for years at this point and heard every single commenter through the years come out with these same 'uh, actually-' points, so i think she's pretty comfortable with the choices for her own hair here.
@@jasminv8653 she specifically said she doesn’t do pin curls and was looking at an actual instruction manual on how to do them, said she didn’t like them and completely struggled with the entire process of doing them and made a point of actually saying with more practice they’d probably be easier for her so no this isn’t a style she does often, and she had problems with them. She pulled actual hair out when pulling out the curls. She specifically said in this that her normal way to set her hair is foam rollers, not pin curls or anything else she tried.
My fav method for curls was to french braid my hair for 3-days. INSANE curls that held afterwrd! That being said, your hair is so pretty, Rachel. Definitely option 1 was the best, but you looked great with all three.
It's like you can see into my life! I was just talking with my daughter about using foam rollers to curl my granddaughter's hair for her dance recital. It's on a Saturday, so we can roll up her hair in the morning and undo them just before the performance.
I do a variant of the Thing where I tie a long ribbon around my head loosely enough to wrap my hair up (think Orianna from The Witcher 3) and pin in the back so it stays there. Then I push it up from my forehead. Makes pretty good curls and easy to sleep in.
Me personally I found black foam curlers and fabric soft curlers specifically made to sleep in depending on what I'm doing works fo me. May try the third method eventually. Some people can pull off the pink, I cannot and being a child born in the mid 90s who was forced into pastels constantly, I gravitate towards darker jewel tones anywho, think anemic vampire skintone, I loathe wearing anything with above 20% pink. So if it's all pink, I'm like nope buying the dark alternate, thank you very much.... Great video as always. And do what you can and we as a whole support you....
It's been a while since I've watched your channel, so I didn't know you grew your hair long and did a big chop until you mentioned here that you are "counting down the days until your hair grows back out." I'm watching this video now to get some ideas on how to style my hair since I just did a big chop and have a bob now. So, when I went back and watched the video of you documenting your big chop, it gave me some piece of mind. Last night I cried myself to sleep over my hair (turns out short hair is a trauma trigger from past times). Today, I washed my short hair for the first time since the cut, and, while it's a bit poofy since I have wavy hair, the cut is actually cute. Thank you for documenting your haircut process, because it was very similar to my own experience. Watching you play around with new styles immediately afterwards gave me good vibes, telling me I will be fine until my hair grows back out. It was a good inspiration, telling me that I will like my hair if I use it wisely and experiment with different styles that I was never able to try before. This was fascinating! I haven't had hair long enough to curl for about 5 years (and my dysphoria thanks me) but whenever I did use foam rollers I never risked brushing them out because my hair is so determined to be straight & so heavy that I was worried the curls would fall out- I knew I wouldn't get more than a couple of hours of curl! Had I been determined, I'm sure I could have found ways to make it work.

Instead of that third gadget, I do the same type of thing with just a robe tie, elastic banding the ends, and I can then cross the ties in back, up and around, and tie the ends together on top of my head. It’s a tighter curl - still may not be as good as foam rollers for your style - but it’s also more comfortable and secure to sleep in. I also have THICK hair and can vouch for this method if you dampen/product your hair properly.
I can also vouch for this as a fellow thick haired girlie. I am partial to finger combing after rather than brushing, so I'm not sure what that result would look like. I tend to put it up at ~90% dry and it's always set by morning. I imagine it would be just as fast as foam rollers with practice, but sometimes you just have to follow the old adage "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". 🤷🏼♀️😉
Thisssss, def recommend something like the rope of a robe or something cause I have really long hair and decided to try the 3rd one and it did NOT deliver like it does with just using a rope.
My hair just slide right off during the night and it was so uncomfortable.
The robe tie hack was the inspiration for that tube thing. Like any good method using things you have lying around the house, someone's gotta come along and ✨️monetize✨️ it.
I used a thick pair of socks and got it all really snug, but had similar results to Rachel's. Was super bummed.
I think the new thing would work best with long fine straight hair.
My Grandma did pin curls pretty much her whole life (she grew up in the 40's and 50's). I remember living with her for a few years as a teenager and her telling me, "you know you did it right if they look like little cow pies" 😂 RIP grandma❤

Because I grew up in the 1950s, AND my mom was a licensed beautician whose shop was attached to our house, i'd like to clarify one thing :D PINcurls are done with PINS, I.E., Bobby-Pins. 'Bobby' refers to the fact that they were originally designed to SET YOUR HAIR in a BOB, yeah. They are MUCH easier to use, and a piece of cake to remove, hooray! Try them, and you'll agree. Also, they don't leave Flat Dents on the hair once it's dry.
The steel clips were made for securing hair rollers to the scalp-hair before going under the hairdryer; they were more secure than those plastic pic thingys, but care had to be taken Not to have those actually touching the skin, as they really got hot under the dryer. So mebbe try the pincurl method with Bob-Pins, lol.

Veteran hairstylist here (43 yrs). Try using 2 bobby pins on each of your pin curls. It's sooooo much easier to remove them, plus it's way more comfortable to sleep on. You have such beautiful hair. Every one of these methods turned out fantastic on you, although the "this thing" I felt just left your hair more frizzy than anything. I think for your hair & lifestyle, foam rollers are really the way to go. You get a beautiful style with minimum effort. The pin curls turned out absolutely beautiful, but they really are time consuming & a hassle to put up & take down. We ain't got time for that! 🤣 I first came to your channel eons ago to see what all the young, hip women were doing as far as hairstyles & stayed for the bright bubbly personality.......& watching someone who adults about the same way I do. 💖💖💖
Bobby bins are nicer today sleep with, but I find them difficult to use with this length of hair - the rolls get too thick for the pins. So I bought those clips instead.
I second only using 2 bobby pins for pin curls. That's what I do and it's more comfortable. My go-to is tightly French braiding my hair when it's damp, sleep on it, take it out, shake it loose then add mousse. Super easy and I love the way it looks.
I was going to suggest the same thing but I would like to add boar bristle brush will help form the pin curls better (found that out when I used to wear the buggers in my pin up days)...and the that thing seems to work better when you use it as a third strand of almost a braid thats where I've seen people get the best use out of it...but yes its def for loose curls
So…here is 1 you could try, and easier to sleep on.
Take a bedsheet (old 1😊)and rip some strips up 6-8 inches long-1 inch or so wide.
Wrap your hair around it the same way you do with rollers and just tie a half knot to hold in place.

For pin curls (as someone who does them every night), one method that I find is much easier and quicker is to use the end of a blush brush (or any tube-like utensil), wrap my hair around it (in rather small sections so it doesn’t fall out), remove the hair from it and pin it with hair clips 😊

My mother only did her hair with pincurls. She washed her hair once a week and the pin curl ritual would begin. She used bobby pins and a rat tooth comb to separate her hair and she did it wet. Very precise. I watched this every week of my life. She had baby fine hair and this gave her body and the impression that she had more hair.
My grandmother did pin curls too, she had a short haircut and I think relatively fine hair that was white by the time she was 30, I think the pin curls gave it some nice body and controlled curls.
My mother did the exact same routine - and I’m an ethnic girlie! (Creole/black from New Orleans, to be exact). I think the pin curls on wet hair once-a-week routine is truly a cross-cultural phenomenon, and I love that! Actually, probably a lot healthier for hair than all that heat with electric curling wands. I watched my mom do it during my childhood in the late 70s to early 80s, but I’m sure she was doing that routine even decades earlier.

I do pin curls (I’m in California) and I use Bobby pins on damp hair in the morning. Usually takes an hour to set. I have thin and not a lot of hair.

as a girlie who uses the "thing" daily heres a few modifications that really helped me if you feel like trying it again.
1. for the length of hair you might need the normal thinner one. it makes the curls tighter
2. use the unicorn method! its so comfy to sleep in and doesn't create the weird v in the back. also feels way more secure so you don't have to worry about it falling out or loosening while you sleep.

It’s killing me that you won’t see this comment - cause the Heatless curling rod is INCREDIBLE when done right. You don’t need product - and if you do, it’s extremely minimal. It works best on hair that is just the slightest bit moist - like a mist of water combed through and that’s it. Your wrapping was also too loose and started too low. My hair is the same length as yours and is thick and has a heavy wave. I do this method often and get the prettiest softest, flounciest curls. I hope you’ll consider watching a few tutorial videos and try it again. It’s such a great little tool when you get the hang of it. ☺️

Y’all are obviously trying to create a texture and silhouette that is MODERN. This is a vintage style channel and brushing through curls is mandatory to get a midcentury look. But yes I believe that it’s true, any tool you practice with is going to get easier over time, but she probably knows that already
@@maddieb.4282 Not trying to offer tips on creating the style - just how to use the Heatless curler in general. You can still use a brush to shape the curls into vintage styles - I do it often. The curling rod won’t work with heavy product (as we see in the video.) The hair should also start out at least 98% dry. Otherwise you get frizz and crunchiness. I use my Heatless curler frequently and have gotten it down to a science. Rachel has the perfect hair length and texture for it. It was just the execution that was off.
I feel like all 3 methods would have turned out much nicer with a light mist, little to NO product and either NOT brushing (that sounded horrible everytime she did it😬) Or to just finger comb or at the very least get the proper brush for brushing out curls - I feel like that brush was absolutely not the right choice, sadly it seems to kill all work she did to make those curls.
as someone who uses "the third thing" every night on dry hair, i take a piece from the front, then from the back, crossing them over the tube in a kind of X shape (like a braid where the foam always stay in the middle). it makes it much more secure and tighter curls. but they are more modern shape, like from a curling wand, not vintagey. there are tons of tutorials on tiktok!

I have a hack for the plastic parts on the foam rollers! I saw on a video to take the plastic parts off and replace them with strips of t-shirt. It's stretchy and instead of clicking the plastic parts, you just tie the strip of T-shirt and it makes it 100% more comfortable. And as an added bonus, you'll look kinda like an octopus or Medusa.

@@dopaminedrought395 No, it will unroll half a turn. However, if you don't make it very tight, the "kink" from the plastic is lessened. If the section is dense and you're trying to roll it really tight the plastic does mroe work, making the line more obvious.
gonna be honest, the noodle is my favorite overnight sleep curl! even on my side. something to remember, rachel's been doing curlers for YEARS. that's obviously gonna go the best when its the one you're the most practiced with lmao. foam rollers and noodle are also for creating two very very different types of curls!

Thank you for saying out loud how uncomfortable it is to sleep in curlers. Other videos make it sound easy, like there should be two dozen soft pillows clipped to my hair, inviting me to a refreshing beauty slumber! I usually only use curlers for special events, when it's already hard enough to sleep- nerves, or maybe a hotel room. Sleep deprivation as a beauty tool to help your big day go just perfectly! Ugh.
I am happier to just get up early and leave the curlers in until show time. I looked a little like a poodle last time, but at least I slept!

I hated sleeping in curlers as a little girl. Foam rollers just got tangled & that was a different nightmare 😮
Pin curls, secured with crossed, old fashioned u-shape hair pins (the good ones, not the drug store ones that bend). It's *almost* like you don't have a set in your hair at all. Second best is a soft rag curl (I use fat, satin scrunchies as "rags" when I'm really lazy.) Sleep comfort is a high priority for me with hair sets - foam rollers are great....but I never use them. They're one of the worst to sleep on. (Also, there are insane folks out there that sleep on things like perm rods or Velcro curlers and that's just not right!)
@@TruCatmy mom had this crazy idea to have me use Velcro rollers, with clips, on my hair in high school. My hair was already curly. In theory, I got bigger, softer curls, but they were even more prone to frizzing. And they SUCKED to sleep on.

curl brush out tip! if you brush your hair starting at the bottom of a section and work your way up to the roots, it's a lot easier, avoids major tangles, and is so much gentler on your hair! if you start at the root, it'll tighten any potential knots forming as you brush down. i always use that method when i have to dry brush my natural curls, and it makes the process way less painful 😊
As someone whose method of achieving ringlets is "let hair air dry without touching it", this video is fascinating to me

A couple of years ago I watched one of your videos on how you set your hair in foam rollers. I am in my 70s and found my usual method of blow drying my hair wasn't working like it used to. So--I started doing foam rollers and let my hair grow long in the back (yeah, I have a mullet now) and I LOVE it! I, like you, put a scarf on my head like my Mom used to do when I was a kid. I don't curl the back long hair, I always wear it up with large barrettes that I started making from thrifted jewelry. I have a new passion and I love it. My girlfriends tease me but I'm happy and that's what counts(and it looks good, too!). Thank you!
When I was young and had long hair, I experimented as you did and discovered that if I pulled all my hair up into a scrunchee on top of my head, then wrapped sections in foam curlers so they were piled on top of my head, it was easy to sleep as I wasn't sleeping on the curlers. In the morning, it was easy to take everything down, and because my hair spent the night "up", it had decent lift after I took everything down and styled my hair. Shortcut: if you don't want to sleep in curlers, when you get up, use a curling iron to warm-curl a section of hair, then immediately wrap it around a foam roller - repeat until you have curled everything. After your hair cools completely on the rollers, it should behave as though you slept in them overnight.

glad I'm not the only one cringing slightly at the curls being brushed, I get that it's to create a specific style but it's so inbuilt in my brain that unless you want pain or to look like you've been electrocuted you just don't brush curls like that

Rachel and I both have naturally curly hair but use these techniques to style and control our natural curls in order to create a vintage silhouette and style. Vintage “curls” are SUPPOSED to be brushed out. It’s not “frizz,” it’s volume from the brushed out waves, and pomade smoothed over the top will fix any little frizz. Not brushing out the curls for a vintage look would look absolutely ridiculous tf

To any short-haired folks wondering, finger waves are your best bet if it's very short, pin curls, finger waves if your hair's longer than your ears. You can also see where scrunching it with curl cream gets you. Pin curls are way too much fuss for anything longer than shoulder length, as you can see here, but they're such a nice thing for us short-haired people that don't have a lot of styling options.
I got bored once and decided to pin curl my straight waist long hair. After 2+ hours with me wondering why the hell I was doing this the whole time, the many, many, many pin curls were finally in. The result was amazing, with (mostly) beautiful bouncy curls. I didn't brush out the curls, so they stayed in pretty good shape for a few days, which is a miracle since my hair is hard to curl.
Try is again when you are 65+ with shorter, thinner, gray hair. You'll have a better chance to enjoy the results. I pin-curl when I want to do something special. Wishing Mom could see me doing this retro thing I could have scoffed at when younger.

I used one of the satin curling noodles, but was inspired by someone using socks to try using socks in the same way you use the satin noodle and let me tell you, it's better.
One sock on either side of your head, tied in with those curly no crease hair ties, then you half the hair you have on each side and helix wrap it around. when you get to the bottom you can use the open end of your sock to flip it over your ends and protect them and put the hair tie over the flipped part. I got SO MANY compliments from people that they loved the way it looked.
It's comfier to sleep in too.

back in high school I used to sleep in foam rollers every day... I literally could not imagine subjecting myself to that again. I do the third method with a bathrobe tie and my bangs in foam rollers with pipe cleaners instead of the plastic clips and it's infinitely more comfortable and still pretty. my sleep is more important than the cuteness of foam roller cocker spaniel hair
edit: the third method gets so much easier with experience! you can get it more secure with the back of your hair by wrapping it tighter and following the shape of your head. with a little practice, it's so so fast to do. a bathrobe tie also makes the curls a lot tighter-- I used to do it with a satin ribbon when my hair was shorter for even tighter curls. highly rec if you're cool with a little trial and error to find your preferred strategy
You definitely did give me inspiration with the tube thing (3rd method) if I want to go to a costume party as Ahsoka. You are doing the Lord's work for us hair challenged gals.
Rachel, I implore you to look into the brand “Cozy Curlers.” I started using them a few months ago after seeing some other people with long ass hair have success with them. They’re essentially foam rollers without the plastic rod, they have a net attached to the end of the roller that you wrap around your hair, after it’s wrapped around the curler. They’re much more comfortable to sleep and then anything else I’ve tried, and they actually dry somewhat quickly because they’re just foam, as opposed to the sock method. PLUS you really can change how the curls come out purely by how tightly you wrap the hair, and when the curls settle it’s soooo pretty.
Another fan of @CozyCurlers - in fact just got some for my niece for her birthday!
Easy to use and no plastic clips to fight closing (I have thick hair) or to hurt when I’m sleeping.
I feel like she tried the cozy curlers once and maybe that’s how I heard about them

The 'Thing' seems to be pretty similar to sock curls. I used to do sock curls every night but cut my hair too short to keep doing it. It's getting long enough to start doing it again and I'm so happy. It definitely takes some getting used to to get it right.
I have been looking for this comment - sock curls work really well for me as well and you can section your hair however you want.
Im still trying to make it work. But my problem is my hair doesnt dry. If it wrap jt up around the thing its going to stay wet. If i put product in then it will still be wet on the inside and dry on the outside and then it falls right oht
I tried sock curls so many times and I would just end up with weird dents and and nooks and crannies instead of a actual curls. I actually get better results and nice beachy waves of I go to bed with my hair 50-75% wet, sleep on it free over a regular towel, wake up to a humid day and didn't brush it at all (can you tell I have straight hair 😂)
@@maitesoto1953Yeah, you kind of have to be careful with the placement of your hair. (Not that you asked for advice but) I find it also looks better with dry hair and changing patterns of wrapping as you go. (All hair grabbed from the front goes backwards around the socks, all hair grabbed from the back goes forward around the sock)

@@dessieangel1021 Yeah I watched a couple different ones from her. But I legit can't sleep with rollers at night. So usually I just use the 'Unicorn' style of heatless curls. That seems to be working good enough for now.
In the 80's I used to curl my hair with kleenix. I used a big box of them and used them sort of like the foam rollers on damp hair, NOT wet, for obvious reasons. Accordion fold them, sort of, long-ways and then roll your hair (smaller sections than for foam rollers) and then gently tie them when you're curled all the way up. Wrap in a scarf. EASY to sleep in. More time consuming to take out than rollers, but if you're careful you can keep the tissues to use again. I did it based on what my granny and aunties told me about when they were young and used strips of cloth rags to curl their hair.

Ohhh I did that last year and it gave fab results if you ignored user error. I can never keep a scarf on my head though, so probably didn't work out as good as yours. Wonder if kitchen roll would work for a sturdier method!

I've actually found that having my hair wet worsens my chances with overnight curls! The best method I've found is to wash my hair, let it fully dry (air dry or blow dry, whichever), and then put it in the curlers before going to bed.

I've seen some people have better results with the satin heatless curler when they lay it along the center of their head (think like a unicorn) and wrap it more like a normal french braid rather than doing the two pigtail style wraps. Seems a lot nicer to sleep in if you are a side sleeper too. As someone vaguely considering getting a set to try, it would be interesting to see your experiences with trying that wrap pattern!
I'm 62 years old. If I can't get my hair sorted 10 minutes after washing it, or 5 minutes when I gey dressed in the morning - it isn't happening.
My late mother used rollers a lot and pin curls for any short bits. She got used to sleeping in them for 30 years. I like my sleep too much to contemplate it. Your results match hers. She loved her Carmen heated rollers in the 1970s. Heated them up whilst she showered and rough dried her hair then put them in for 20 minutes as she put on her make up and dressed for a night out. Beats sleeping in them.

This was fun to watch! That said, I think when evaluating the effectiveness of the different techniques, I definitely agree that any technique you've been doing for years and can do mindlessly is going to typically be quicker and easier than the first time you use a new method.
I mean this with all genuine affection, that final curler would be great for a scifi/fantasy hairdo. Especially after you'd shaped it with the hairscarf, someone could really make that work!
As a person with massive natural curls, this was interesting to see the lengths that people without curly hair go through to get curly hair. Sure, I may not be able to dry brush my hair ever but I'll take that over having to sleep on something uncomfortable.

Honestly, most of the people I've known that were big into doing styles and techniques like this had natural curls, I guess they just wanted to try different styles outside of what their hair did naturally.

You have no idea of the neck crick an 8 year old girl has on picture day at school because mom forced her to wear foam rollers. Why is my smile so weird? Well, lemme tell ya.
Okay, remember the Wrap Snap and Go from TV a billion years ago??? THOSE are the best rollers and they are so comfy to sleep in! You can do a full vintage-style set pattern for the floof, or for more modern curls you can do what I do which is panic an hour before I have to leave for something, spritz some water, throw my hair into a high ponytail, separate the ponytail into 4-6 random chunks with the rollers, and then take it all down when I get out of the car wherever I'm going. Always get compliments on my hair!
i tried the 'thing' before, i've found that doing a unicorn braid by positioning the sausage front to back rather than to either side, and effectively treating the thing as the third strand of a french braid (its slightly 🤏more complicated than that - tutorials explain it better) works better for me as a side sleeper, because you don't have a weird lump on either side of your head, and I've found it curls your hair better.
genuine question, how is that any different or better than just doing a french braid and sleeping on it? My default hair method for years was just to plait my damp hair in various ways before bed and then it'd be wavy/curly the next day, just not sure what the "thing" is actually adding?
@@emmao6578 wrapping hair around the 'thing' makes it more of a circular ringlet, whereas just braiding it will only kinda make it wavy.
There's not a whole lot of difference really, but I find using the 'thing' also makes the ends nice and curled, where in a braid they would just be straight after where the hair tie was.
@@millyboop2047 I have a method for fastening braids that results in waves all the way to the end! It would be easier to show than describe, but I think I can convey it properly if I first describe the more normal way of using a hair tie.
So, to fasten hair with a hair tie, you set the loop around the strand of hair, and then you twist once so there's a loop around the hair connected to a newly formed loop. Set this new loop around the hair, twist, and repeat until all of the hair band is coiled around the hair and you can't manage to form a new loop. Normally you're aiming to cluster these loops directly next to each other, so they're neat-looking and fasten tightly.
However, you can instead choose to set each new loop you twist enough further down the hair that you can see the gap between. This forms a pattern of visible criss-crosses with a core of hair peeking through.
Now, instead of a thin hair tie, let's use a scrunchie. And instead of moving each loop to go around the hair, pull the hair through each loop, so instead of criss-crosses around a fairly straight hair core, the hair curves around the thickness of the scruchie.
My experience has been that you can get the bottom of the fastening much closer to the end of the hair this way-- maybe half an inch left out, most of the time, rather than the two or three inches I normally wind up with using the normal method. And the way it naturally settles draws the very end up into the scruchie over the course of the day/night. Then when the hair is released, there's no point where the wave suddenly stops, leaving a straight end; it's wavy all the way. I have had some occasions where the wave from the scruchie was much more strongly defined than the braid-wave, though.

Here to vouch for the last curling noodle method used....I recently bought one and have used it five times. It works GREAT! My hair never keeps curls and I can't stand sleeping in traditional curlers, but this thing is damn comfy! Sure, that first night is terrifying, thinking it's gonna fall out and be pointless, but once you learn that it won't...all's good! There is a fine line between wrapping your hair too tight (and looking like Shirley Temple) or too loose (and having made only loose waves that fall easily). I've even taken a shower in the morning, dried my hair, put on some mousse and hair sprayed once done. Then after only two hours I had lovely curls. Just remember, it's much easier to claw clip the noodle down while wrapping and wrap your hair as close to your head as possible for tighter curls! (I tuck the excess noddle ends in the back to sleep, also looking very Star Wars-esq)....But hey, to each their own! May not work great on all hair, but yeah, works awesome for me!

Do you roll them the same way she did? I think the woman in my childhood did it differently.
I think they would put a finger close to and parallel to the scalp. Then wrap the hair around the finger, starting at the scalp end.
When they got to the bottom end, rotate the finger and put the tip on the scalp. The hair slides off and is right at the scalp and in a good position to pin.

I'm 79 and have fine, very straight hair (what was called string straight hair). I have worn it long most of my life, it is now down below my waist. Back in the early 60's I wore it in a long Page Boy (while everyone else was teasing their hair and wearing Bubbles and Bee Hives). I got the Page Boy by winding all the curls towards my face in two rows and I used 2 Bobbie Pins to hold each curl. It came out soft and I loved it and was easy to sleep on.

Bobby pins would have worked a lot better for pin curls.. theres no place for the hair to get stuck between! I used to do pin curls all the time when my hair was shortersand never use those kind of clips.
Also, dont use the brush to pick out your curls - get a pick or a wide brush comb - the brush is what introduces the frizz - a pick would just separate them :)
I used to love sitting and talking to my grandma when she and my mom would work to pin curl her hair together .. One of my favorite memories
My hair is pretty much down to my waist and naturally wavy (actually curly at shorter links) so I just put my hair up in a sock bun or curls after a shower and pin curl a few of the strands that dont fit in and call it a day or if Im being super lazy braid it - both require a quick run through with the blow dryer in the morning if I want it fully dry and some gel either way but it works for me - probably because my hair isn't pin straight and has a curl pattern its working with.
Shes been doing these hair styles for years at this point and heard every single commenter through the years come out with these same 'uh, actually-' points, so i think she's pretty comfortable with the choices for her own hair here.
@@jasminv8653 she specifically said she doesn’t do pin curls and was looking at an actual instruction manual on how to do them, said she didn’t like them and completely struggled with the entire process of doing them and made a point of actually saying with more practice they’d probably be easier for her so no this isn’t a style she does often, and she had problems with them. She pulled actual hair out when pulling out the curls. She specifically said in this that her normal way to set her hair is foam rollers, not pin curls or anything else she tried.

My fav method for curls was to french braid my hair for 3-days. INSANE curls that held afterwrd! That being said, your hair is so pretty, Rachel. Definitely option 1 was the best, but you looked great with all three.

It's like you can see into my life! I was just talking with my daughter about using foam rollers to curl my granddaughter's hair for her dance recital. It's on a Saturday, so we can roll up her hair in the morning and undo them just before the performance.
I do a variant of the Thing where I tie a long ribbon around my head loosely enough to wrap my hair up (think Orianna from The Witcher 3) and pin in the back so it stays there. Then I push it up from my forehead. Makes pretty good curls and easy to sleep in.

Me personally I found black foam curlers and fabric soft curlers specifically made to sleep in depending on what I'm doing works fo me. May try the third method eventually. Some people can pull off the pink, I cannot and being a child born in the mid 90s who was forced into pastels constantly, I gravitate towards darker jewel tones anywho, think anemic vampire skintone, I loathe wearing anything with above 20% pink. So if it's all pink, I'm like nope buying the dark alternate, thank you very much.... Great video as always. And do what you can and we as a whole support you....
It's been a while since I've watched your channel, so I didn't know you grew your hair long and did a big chop until you mentioned here that you are "counting down the days until your hair grows back out." I'm watching this video now to get some ideas on how to style my hair since I just did a big chop and have a bob now. So, when I went back and watched the video of you documenting your big chop, it gave me some piece of mind. Last night I cried myself to sleep over my hair (turns out short hair is a trauma trigger from past times). Today, I washed my short hair for the first time since the cut, and, while it's a bit poofy since I have wavy hair, the cut is actually cute. Thank you for documenting your haircut process, because it was very similar to my own experience. Watching you play around with new styles immediately afterwards gave me good vibes, telling me I will be fine until my hair grows back out. It was a good inspiration, telling me that I will like my hair if I use it wisely and experiment with different styles that I was never able to try before. Also, where did you get those ruby slippers?!

This was fascinating! I haven't had hair long enough to curl for about 5 years (and my dysphoria thanks me) but whenever I did use foam rollers I never risked brushing them out because my hair is so determined to be straight & so heavy that I was worried the curls would fall out- I knew I wouldn't get more than a couple of hours of curl! Had I been determined, I'm sure I could have found ways to make it work.
Pin curls do take forever but I adore how they turn out every time. I loved this video!
As a curly girl naturally it pains me to see you brush your curls. That said. Here is a reason foam rollers have been around forever.
All depends on the look you want. For vintage looks, brushing works.
For yield signs with natural curls like mine, brushing works. 😂

My grandma has long hair pinup curls and has been doing her hair the same way for 80+ years. To this day, they are pinned right now for bed time. Thank you for this comparison. It's what i needed because i always want to try new ways to set my hair. :D
