  • The Csango people are a Hungarian ethnographic group of Roman Catholic faith living mostly in the Romanian region of Moldavia, especially in Bacău County. Their traditional language, Csango, an old Hungarian dialect, is currently used by only a minority of the Csango population group. The ethnic Csángó Hungarians of Moldavia's Seret Valley have moved in large numbers to Budapest, and become a staple of the local folk scene with their distinctive instrumentation using flutes, fiddles, drums and the lute.
    Traditional Music Channel is for everyone who has a passion for music.
    Music is an expression of human creativity. UNESCO reports that among all the performing arts, music is the most universal and is found in every society, most often as an integral part of other performing art forms and other domains of intangible cultural heritage.
    Traditional forms of music are considered carriers of cultural heritage because they represent expressions and traditions transferred through generations of a community.
    With recordings from more than hundred nations our collection of traditional music offers a staggering diversity of our humanity.

    COUNCIL OF EUROPE. RECOMMENDATION 1521 (2001) CSANGO MINORITY CULTURE IN ROMANIA (23 MAY 2001)
    1. Further to its report on the endangered Uralic minority cultures in Russia and the adoption of Resolution 1171 (1998) the Assembly is concerned about the situation of the Csango minority culture, which has existed in Romania for centuries.
    2. The Csangos (Ceangăi in Romanian) are a non-homogeneous group of Roman Catholic people. This ethnic group is a relic from the Middle Ages that has survived in Moldavia, in the eastern part of the Romanian Carpathians. Csangos speak an early form of Hungarian and are associated with ancient traditions, and a great diversity of folk art and culture, which is of exceptional value for Europe.
    3. For centuries, the self-identity of the Csangos was based on the Roman Catholic religion and their own language spoken in the
    family and the village community. This, as well as their archaic lifestyle and world view, may explain their very strong ties to the
    Roman Catholic religion and the survival of their dialect.
    4. Those who still speak Csango or consider it their mother tongue have been declining as a proportion of the population. Although not everybody agrees on this number it is thought that between 60 000 and 70 000 people speak the Csango language.
    5. Today in Moldavia, the language of the school and the church is Romanian. There is local teaching in Ukrainian and the study of Polish, Roma and Russian as mother tongues. Despite the provisions of the Romanian law on education and the repeated requests from parents there is no teaching of Csango language in the Csango villages. As a consequence, very few Csangos know how to write their mother tongue.
    6. The Csangos make no political demands, but me rely want to be recognised as a distinct culture. They ask for assistance in safeguarding it and, first and foremost they demand that their children be taught the Csango language and that their church services be held in their mother tongue.
    7. The Assembly recalls the texts which it has adopted on related matters, notably Recommendation 928 (1981) on the educational and cultural problems of minority languages and dialects in Europe, Recommendation 1203 (1993) on Gypsies in Europe, Recommendation 1283 (1996) on history and the learning of history in Europe, Recommendation 1291 (1996) on Yiddish culture and Recommendation 1333 (1997) on the Aromanian culture and language.
    8. Diversity of cultures and languages should be seen as a precious resource that enriches our European heritage and also reinforces the identity of each nation and individual. Assistance on the European level, and in particular from the Council of Europe, is justified to save any particular culture and is needed in the case of the Csangos.
    9. The Assembly therefore recommends that the Committee of Ministers encourage Romania to ratify and implement the European Charter of Regional or Minority Languages and to support the Csangos, particularly in the following cases:
    i. the possibility to be educated in the mother tongue should be ensured in accordance with the Romanian Constitution and the legislation on education. In the meantime classrooms should be made available in local schools and teachers working in the villages teaching the Csango language should be paid;
    ii. Csango parents should be informed of the Romanian legislation on education and instructions should be issued on how to apply for its provisions concerning languages;
    iii. there should be an option for Roman Catholic services in the Csango language in the churches in Csango villages and the possibility for the Csangos to sing hymns in their own mother tongue;
    iv. all Csango associations should be officially recognised and supported. Particular attention should be paid to the correct registration of the Csango minority at the next official census;
    v. access to modern mass media facilities should be promoted. Financial support should be given to Csango associations in accordance with the availability of funds, in order to help them to express actively their own identity (in particular through the issuing of a monthly publication and the functioning of a local radio station);
    vi. specific programmes should be set up for the promotion of Csango culture in the context of raising awareness of and respect for minorities. International discussions and seminars of experts should be organised to study the Csangos;
    vii. an information campaign should be launched in Romania concerning the Csango culture and the advantages of
    co-operation between the majority and minorities;
    viii. the unique linguistic and ethnographical features of the Csangos should be appropriately recorded;
    ix. the economic revival of the area should be encouraged, for example, through the establishment of small and medium-sized enterprises in Csango villages.

When I was a child, she sang many Hungarian lullabies to me and my brothers. I’ve never been to Hungary, but when I hear any Hungarian songs I feel a profound sense on nostalgia and gratitude.
      Welcome, dear Patricia! The culture of the Moldavian Csángos - the music, the tales, the dances, the clothes, the textiles - above all, the pure and steadfast faith and Marian spirit that kept them there in the dispersion, far from the Hungarian block and that delicious old Hungarian dialect, which I was able to hear personally when I was able to talk to a young guy, it all fills me with sincere admiration.

      Same is happening now in Csango villages in Romania, i am Csango, our parents and grandparents speak within themselfs a lot of hungarian but they didn't teach us at all, they only spoke with us in Romanian, and in the present the Gen Z does not speak it at all, only Romanian, it was the choice of our parents because we live in Romania in a region surrounded only by Romanians (Moldova) and in population census we declare ourselfs as Romanian, and we have Romanian names some have Hungarian names translated to Romanian ( like Farkas = Forcos, Kosa = Cosa, Csango = Ciangau/Ceangau or Lengyel = Lenghen (yes some people have Polish origins mixed with hungarians :)) ) and it is sad because we begin to forget our origins, I am learning Hungarian now, I don't want to lose it.

      @Yolo. 180 When Transylvania and many other territories belonged to Hungary all of the minorities had the same rights as Hungarians and you were abled to use your native language in public. Even today in Hungary we have Slovak schools for Slovakian minorities where they can study in their mother tongue. In those towns where you can find these minorities everything is written in their language and in Hungarian. It would be nice if our neighbour countries treated Hungarian minorities like people. Luckily the Slovaks made a 180° turn in their politics and they started to treat Hungarian minorities like their own comrades. But now the topic is Romania. I'm very disappointed when I see hairy soled "patriots" destroying Hungarian graveyards. Of course all of them has a nice Italian colour. When someone in a shop finds out that you are Hungarian they won't look in your eyes. There are some Romanians living in Hungary and we don't treat them differently. They usually come hear to work because they can make more money here. I don't think we should argue about history because it is proved that you are learning fake history. Starting from King Mathias to Transylvania and your own ethnicity.

    • @markpeter6379

      @@mezuninsan2517 no-it s not turkish. May be some simmilar words. But this is really very speshell language. So beautifull and miracle. The first time i hurted the old hungarian song in the famose film. "English patient"-it was something unbelivable. For me the time was stoped-and i wanted to come back to this song again and again. Really-some magic is in this beautifull language. Even is so hard to learn.

    Her parents both were from Budapest.
    She knew some hungarian, and tried to teach us her grandkids some.
    Both of my grandmother's parents lived to be nearly 100, were very hard workers.
    Grandmother fed us goulash and chicken peprikash.

    Beautiful. I can't explain why I love listening to this so much. I can't understand Hungarian language. My father was 100 percent Hungarian. I'm the last child of 9. 7th son. I have faint memories of Hungarian language spoken but was very young. I have overwhelming need to listen. Like it's a group destiny to be a part of. Like I'm a part of something not yet known. Not yet started. But is there. Right in front of me. Something that has always been a part of me. I have a great desire to seek out more about what this is. I don't know what it even is I'm trying to explain. It's unexplainable. I feel I'm in a trance sometimes when I listen. I may have to go to Hungary. I've been trying to seek others who feel this way only to be disappointed time and time again. I truly am lost.

      @Oricand Moldavian Csangos are originally Hungarians. Some of them got assimilated to Romanian since 1920 when the region was torn off the Hungarian Kingdom. The rest of them have kept being Hungarian, it is very beautiful for us, Hungarians to listen to their traditional speech.

      NO...... you are not lost. You have taken the most important step, which is to reclaim your Magyar heritage. You are on a road so many of us travel, Back to our Hungarian roots. You may feel overwhelmed because this music is so moving, BUT that in itself is a measure of your "Hungarianess”.
      We are a PASSIONATE people and that passion is much aroused by Music. WHY do you think that for its size, Hungary produced SO many Great musicians, classical composers, great instrumentalists, Even FILM producers, and actors? WHY does Hungarian Music claim such a hold in the World Folk Music Movement? Because it SPEAKS to people's emotion , so much more so than the music of many other nation. AND It arouses YOUR passion BECAUSE it is rooted in your soul, As it is in Mine. Stay on your journey; look around you, you are NOT alone. I am walking next to with you as are many others. ----- A MAGYAR-American from NYC.
