  • Romani music or Gipsy music is the music of the Romani people, who have their origins in northern India, but today live mostly in Europe. Historically nomadic, though now largely settled, the Romani people have long acted as entertainers and tradesmen. In many of the places Romanies live they have become known as musicians. The wide distances travelled have introduced a multitude of influences of Byzantine, Greek, Arabic, Indian, Persian, Turkish, Slavic, Romanian, German, Dutch, French, Spanish and even Jewish musical forms. It is difficult to define the parameters of a unified Romani musical style, as there are many differences in melodic, harmonic, rhythmic and formal structures from region to region. Lyrics to Romani songs are often sung in one or more dialects of the Romani language, and dance frequently accompanies Romani music performance.
    The quintessentially Spanish flamenco is to a very large extent the music (and dance, or indeed the culture) of the Romani people of Andalusia. Apart from Romani music for local use, in Eastern Europe a separate Romani music originated for entertainment at parties and celebrations. This music drew its themes from Hungarian, Romanian, Russian and other sources. Later on it gained popularity in Western Europe, where many Romani orchestras were active, playing sophisticated melodies of East European origin. Most Romani music is based on the folk music of the countries where the Romani went through or settled. Local music is adopted and performed - usually instrumental - and, slowly, it is transformed into Romani styles, which are usually more complex than the original styles. In its turn, Romani music has greatly influenced the local music.
    Traditional Music Channel is for everyone who has a passion for music.

    ......My grandfather Mano, was a great Hungarian Romachi/Gypsy violin master in music........ He taught my Uncle Loclie to be great as well......My Pop Zoltan is the best looking man in the world, and got stuck in NYC, when he left Hungary around 1956........I saw him play my god sister's violin once, we were amazed......Her name is Ana Batar..........They robed him from our home in 2015, with his wife.......I am still looking for my dear parents........ I know my prayers this Yom Kipper, will penetrate the other worlds, so this is addressed in many ways........................

    All the Gypsy's I have known were poor, like me; and some of the nicest people I've ever known....
    All the social stereotypes I had heard about Gypsy's turned out to be mostly lies; what's wrong with living free, refusing control by political authority figures and social jerks in society? Nothing wrong with being Rom, as far as I'm concerned; they are good people to me and also treat me as such.

    • @vince2936
      @vince2936 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      the stereotypes around my people are nasty. i feel like people are just jealous that we have such rich culture and history that they feel the need to take what we have and attack us, and fear when we rebel in any way.

      Maybe not in your country, but where I live I know stories that'd curl your hair up. I personally know some gypsy gun runners and drug dealers, but that's mostly whatever, that's business, regardless of being criminal. The worse stories, though, are of kicking people's teeth clean off, attacking in groups and puncturing guys with pieces of rebar, stabbings, etc. Some of these I witnessed myself, some of them friends of mine witnessed themselves.
      I don't automatically judge or dislike someone for being gypsy, many are just normal people, but the stories don't come from nowhere. A lot of them are on the wilder side... They are also victims of extreme racism, unfortunately. It ends up being an endless cycle.

    My mother grew up in Hungarian community in US. She said they hired gypsy musicians for weddings and parties often. They played music that everyone danced to. It makes we want to dance too.

    • @szabolcshajdu792
      @szabolcshajdu792 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Those hired gipsy musician were not rockstars. That was a different world. They were ethnic gipsies, who were playing Hungarian music for a living for an ethnic Hungarian audience. That audience were not interested in hearing gipsy folk music, but Hungarian dance music, based on Hungarian folk tradition. The so called MAGYAR CIGÁNYZENE, the Hungarian Gipsy Music nothing to do with the gipsy folk music played in this video.

Although I am not Hungarian descendant I am eager to visit Hungary and know better the popular music, either purely Hungarian as Bartok and Kodaly recorded or with Roma influence. Great country.

    In Hungarian Gypsy Music is NOT the music of the Gypsy but its a Gypsy style of playing Hungarian folk music. There is a big misconception of what the word means abroad. The music now being played however is not Hungarian but perhaps Gypsy in origin. The Gypsy language is related to the Hindu language of India where they originate from while Hungarian is a totally different origin and its native style of music is also totally different.

    This is Gypsy Music from Hungary..... NOTHING to do with the MIddle east or the Ottomans. The opposite is true, these Romani players influenced the music of THOSE regions.

      I wouldn't be so sure. I'm pretty sure Hungarian gypsy music historically has had influence from not only middle-east and ottoman cultures but also many others. All music borrows and develops from other existing cultures. It's the beauty of music. Hungary was occupied by the Ottomans for a hundred years back in 16th 17th century so to say they had no influence I think is incorrect. Gypsy melodies can be heard for examplein Bartók's compositions and Charlie Parker's sax.

    Imagine the musical journey of the Romany people. They left north India around a thousand years ago, I'm sure a few of which must have been musicians. As they traveled over hundreds of years through different lands they put on shows, heard the local music and jammed with locals all the while being influenced and influencing musically. Then nearly a thousand years later you have the genius Django Reinhardt.

      the problem is that the gypsy art of music was passed down from generation to generation. that passing down is no longer happening in alot of areas and most gypsies can't play any music or instruments because of it. up to 90% of gypsy music from the 1700s onwards has been lost!

    • @fabuniverse3908
      @fabuniverse3908 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@puncifikator3870 the world's changed quite a lot in the last hundred years. Everyone now lives in a globalised world. I imagine a lot of Roma young people today like hip-hop, rock, dance music, pop etc like all the kids do. Also I think it possible that music performance isn't as lucrative an art form now as perhaps it was in the past. Gypsy music like flamenco, manouche jazz and this Hungarian music here will never die, it's too good.
