Return to ROYAL POOL - AMAZING Angeles National Forest

  • Royal Pool in Angeles National Forest is a legendary, secluded swimming hole buried in a beautiful, deep granite gorge in the San Gabriel Mountains. Most hiking directions to get to it are outdated, referencing trails and campgrounds that no longer exist. I made the trek out here once before, arriving at Royal Pool in complete darkness. I decided to return with plenty of time to not only enjoy the pool in the daylight, but also make at least most of the difficult boulder hopping, bushwhack out with some daylight as well.

    I headed down to the Royal Pool a year ago, it’s faster to walk in the middle of the river the whole way down with good water shoes that have good traction. All the rocks are covered in slick green algae/moss. From my recollection you have to travel two miles to the falls/pool in the river, trekking poles are a big help to catch you from falling if you’re moving fast. This area is active with black bears and mountain lions, came across both tracks along the edge of the water so I don’t advise traveling it alone and it’s not beginner friendly territory.

      @@JesseStLouis Yeah, I've been editing it together today. It should be done processing soon. There's still a lot of water on the creek, but the pool itself looks pretty similar to how it was when you visited in this video. It's my first time there so I don't have much to compare it to aside from your videos, but it wasn't too over grown, which is a plus for accessing similar spots. The Bear Canyon pools also have a lot of water.

    In July 2018 my buddy and I hiked to the pool from both directions on two different days. We did not try to climb over it. Climbing around was too sketchy (loose rock, etc.) and we had heard that sliding down into the pool was very dangerous. The water flow was far less than what you found or we could not have come from the downstream side without at least wading through some pools.

    Something seems vary off by the distance and staring location. I never heard of this pool but I know the area extremely well. There is a campsite called oakwilde just off the 2 hwy. if you look for that site and the closest point of the 2 you will find a small turn out. This turn out has a trail you won't find on any map. This should cut your distant in half if not by at min a third. Make sure when you get to the bottom you mark the trail. Since its unmarked it's easy to lose. I found the trail looking for a shortcut to mt brown.

    • @JesseStLouis
      @JesseStLouis  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2
