When I was a teenager Circle X Ranch was owned by the Boy Scouts of America, if memory serves me correctly. This was in the 1960's. We used to go to the grotto every time we camped at Circle X. We only went there in the fall, winter and spring. The amount of water flowing through there in your video is incredible. That amount of water is highly dependent on very heavy winter precipitation and you might only see that amount of flow every 20 years. I was last there in 1973, a good winter and there wasn't nearly that amount of water. I've hiked there in the summer of some dry years and only found stagnant water in the "caves." 2017 was the record year for snowfall in the Sierra and we received over 30 feet of snow in our driveway. This was just a bit more than 1983 the previous record holding year. I think that the National Park Service needs more funding to purchase more land in the Santa Monica Mountains. The Land and Water Conservation Fund is obtained from money collected from federal oil and gas leases. Conservatives tend to oppose spending this money, favoring that it be used to balance the budget, but that was not the intent of the law passed to provide funding for long term public needs. The more the spending is delayed the higher the price the land sells at. In addition a lot of land is lost to development as a result of not buying it when the opportunity is there. One thing I remember about Circle X is the mountain above it, which we called the "Sleeping Indian." The entire ridge top forms a profile of what looks like a native American man lying on his back. It doesn't take a lot of imagination to see. Thanks for posting this video. I'm in my late 60's now and this is a bit of a trip down memory lane.
Split rock, we used to call it. Then you’d end up down where the creek runs through and Ladybugs were everywhere..As I recall, there was even an out house built from the natural woods. The actual split rock was a huge boulder that was split in half by a tree.. I also recall you can yell across the canyon are about halfway along the trail and hear your echo
@@Eddiego100 I forgot the echo! As soon as I read your last sentence a memory popped right into my mind of yelling at a certain point along the trail. Fantastic!
My navigation skills suck, so I truly hope you know how fortunate you are to have the natural ability to find these places. Tomorrow I am planning to get up @6am and start a trail by 7-730am. thanks for the inspiration
Great video. I love the Santa Monica Mountains and Malibu Canyon. I live in San Diego but I'm in LA a lot visiting my in-laws and love to get out and hike.
Haha, I've only made a couple practice videos for my channel so far and I still cringe :P. Still great to watch videos about new hikes and new places like this.
You might like Stoddard Canyon Falls, has a natural slide and is just off Baldy Rd. I have to put my video together for that hike, but it was one of the most amazing places I just learned about, after driving by it for the past 30 years unknown down in the canyon below Baldy Village. This place in Malibu looks so cool! Thanks for putting this video together.
It might be. But I think a good swim is in order :) And, because the weather is still cool and navigating the canyon with so much water requires some fancy footwork, I was completely alone. Once summer comes and the water levels recede, I expect more crowds, so now could be a great time. And, I personally enjoyed the adventure even going up and down the canyon barefoot once skipping rocks became impossible. I will also add, supposedly there are other falls in Stoddard Canyon, some noting this is actually in San Antonio canyon but so named because it is near Stoddard-Barret Rd. And there is a cool gingerbread house on the road...hansel and gretel in the woods kind of moment. Pharroah has a video of it on his channel.
going to do this one on sat, after the rain hopefully comes tonight and tomorrow. and it should be a great sight then heading towards Escondido Falls after..
on the nearby beach will there be places to park and snorkel and maybe catch a few winks--or is that stretch along the beach so heavy with people that you cant park and get run off?
Beautiful! Love the video . How hard would this be for a beginner or someone with planters fasciitis? How many miles did you go and is it mostly uphill? I Just want to go here but don’t want to be disappointed because I won’t be able to do gnarly uphills. 😉 anyone’s reply would be appreciated 🤗
Hi, Jesse, great videos you have made! Have you ever heard of "Cataract Falls" in San Dimas? It is down the creek just below Raging Waters. It has a do not enter sign but I'm sure people still go there and jump when it is running high. There are some TH-cam videos of it- check it out!
There's even more beauty past The Grotto for you adventurous hikers out there: th-cam.com/video/bBU5E_WKqXg/w-d-xo.html

Yeah it's amazing
Omg! I went to the time tunnel two days ago in Topanga and went swimming! I can’t wait to go here!!! Thank you!
Cool
Great video. I love the Santa Monica Mountains and Malibu Canyon. I live in San Diego but I'm in LA a lot visiting my in-laws and love to get out and hike.
Thanks. Lol, I cringe when I watch this because it's one of my popular videos but I think my quality has improved soooooo much since I made this.

+Williams Justin yeah thanks for watching. I've heard of that slide near Baldy. Have you been recently?
Jesse St Louis went Saturday, lots of water, great experience. Had to walk up the creek through the water after a point. Want to go back for a swim.
So was the flow too much to be able to do the slide?
It might be. But I think a good swim is in order :) And, because the weather is still cool and navigating the canyon with so much water requires some fancy footwork, I was completely alone. Awesome! Thanks for sharing. . .
enjoy!

Sounds like a good plan. Let me know how the flow was.
que lugar tan asombroso, se ve que lo pasas muy bien. Ojalá tenga la oportunidad de ir y conocer ese hermoso lugar. me gustó tu video
+kiwuana muchas gracias amiga
so beautiful!! Thank you for sharing with us 🥰
🤙
So beautiful!! Do you know if this is still here with the drought???
Maybe if you've had rain in the last few weeks
Thank you brother. Will find you on the trail one of these days.
🤙
I love your videos !!! I have to go visit these places ! I definitely want to go down under the water falls
Thanks so much!
Hitting this up this Saturday!
Nice. I hope its flowing.
What was the flow like?
Do you offer personal tours for these hikes? I love your channel.
I'm sorry I don't, but thanks for watching

Hey Jeff, not sure which beach you're referring to. This spot is up in the Santa Monica Mountains.

It's downhill all the way to the Grotto so uphill the whole way back. It's a good beginner hike but best for after rain so it's flowing.
god i wish i knew someone like you, nobody i know likes adventure😢 i wanna do some hikes like this but scared to do it alone.
There's some Facebook, Meetup or Reddit groups where you might find people to do stuff like this
your awesome bro!!
Hey thanks for the support Alex!
I like your videos thanks
Thanks for watching Idalia
Have you ever been to Charmlee Wilderness Park
?
It's in Malibu/Santa Monica Mountains I believe
No, not familiar with that one
Did you know there are hidden waterfalls near The Bridge to Nowhere?

Thanks Richard, I'll check it out!
can anyone advise what to expect if you go to The Grotto this weekend? Any chance there is still water?
I was out there a couple months ago and it was pretty dry. It's still a beautiful hike with lots of shade though.
F'n awsome !!!
Hey thanks for watching Peter!
Was there today....
Nice, still water flow?
have you gone to the bridge to no where??
+luis vargas yes
Jesse St Louis where is that located?
+MsVeronicaMonica The tunnels or the bridge to nowhere?
Jesse St Louis the bridge to nowhere. I actually just looked up some videos of the hike and it looks amazing. But where is it exactly (city)? Thanks!
+MsVeronicaMonica here's the Google Maps link
Bridge to Nowhere
Mt Baldy, CA 91759

As of February 10, 2018, there's not enough water to create waterfalls around Circle X, unfortunately.
+Steve Johnson yeah Malibu is not good for waterfalls right now. There's some flow up in the San Gabriels though.
Skyrim would lead me to believe you should have found at least 2 treasure chests. Any good loot? :-P
+Rob Clark lol
Good informative video but the background music makes me nauseous.
Sorry to hear that
please tell me where is that beautiful place located? thanks!
+Federico Chavez Malibu, California
+0:11 typical California road. 🤣
😅🤣😂
Do they allow dogs?
Not sure but getting down in to the Grotto cave would be tough for a dog.
Yeah I can see that. Thank you for the tip :)
