I'm a big fan of the 7.62x25. I wish it was more popular in modern firearms.
Me too. One of the best long range shots I've taken was with a 54-1. I call it my pocket rifle.

I’m interested in any of these bottle neck rounds gaining popularity and viability over some of the other auto rounds just for feeding reliability in pistols and carbines especially with similar projectiles have better pressures behind them, I’d say there is still a place for slower rounds when you talk about over penetration in self defense use though

I really feel like this Cartridge design could benefit from a modern revival. It almost perfectly fits the PDW role, and with modernized features it could bridge the gap between 5.56 and 9mm with little effort.

7.62 Tokarev and .30 US Carbine are both interesting cartridges that are effective for personal defense and small to medium game. I would love to see more modern loads for them - and more modern platforms chambered for them.
America is not to keen on foreign cartridges. The 6.5 Sweed has a lot going for it too. I'd like a double action large capacity magazine chambered in 7. 62x25

all those "agencies" mentioned here have literally no jurisdiction making laws at all, let alone laws that word-for-word contradict the supreme law of the land, the us constitution. Those "laws" are what are termed "unconstitutional official acts" as in yes, they do exist on paper and if you don't know better they may even prey on your ignorance and get you to agree to abide by these "laws." But by the very fact of their unconstitutionality they can be safely ignored, and are every single day by citizens around the world. Shall not be infringed. Not a single mention of the words "except for in the following locations and under the following circumstances ..."
Remember: nobody in world history ever forcibly took a firearm or any weapon away from someone else. they only asked and had the person agree to hand them over.
It's the fun factor when it comes to 7.62x25 for me. The recoil, the fireball, the precision... It feels like a man's round. Never compared it, but under my fingers it seems like it's a slimmer round too (compared to 9mm). Imagine a modern double stack pistol with that. It's niche, but I would buy it.
I have a modern double stack in it, the np762. Only double stack I know of (pistol ofc) in the round. Although there were rumors about norinco cz clones also being made in x25. Anyways it makes a fantastic round in the sig platform if a bit wide in the grip
@@rambie2131 the vietnamese standard issue pistol is a double stack derivative of the TT33 in 7.62x25, called the K14VN. The NP762 is cool as hell though, and definitely a rare gun.
I'm always impressed by the fact you can read the chronograph so easily from such distances.

7.62x25 out of a full size pistol ball ammo is devastating enough to be effective. In civilian use over-penetration is a big issue but you have to remember 7.62x25 was designed for military use. There were some experimental bullet designs for this cartridge which were either tumbling on impact or expanding a lot and those could be a great self defence rounds.
A machinist/gunsmith friend of mine picked up several TT-33s back when they were dirt cheap, and converted some to .38 Super and some to 9x23mm Winchester and had them magnaported. This was back when 7.62x25 Tokarev was less available, hence the cheap price for the pistols. They were sweet shooters!

When I was first aware of the 7.62x25, I equated it with the old Mauser round - weak and ineffective. Much later I learned that although they sound similar and look alike, there's a world of difference between the two.
Since then, I've had a chance to shoot it, and I was impressed. My impression at the time was that the 7.62x25 was a fair alternate to the 30 carbine (which is longer). My research also revealed that the Czechoslovakians routinely loaded the round a couple of hundred fps faster than their fellow countries. Which indicates to me that the cartridge has a lot of room for performance improvement given adequate breech support.
I'd like to see if someone can chamber the round in something like a Ruger Mini 14, or one of the "Camp carbines". It would be an interesting chambering.

That Reeds ammo was producing a very impressive muzzle flash in the Cz.
That's the only impressive thing apparently.
The reason is because they're using slow powder and its not burning up efficiently before the bullet leaves the barrel. They need to use a faster finer grain powder or label the ammunition as intended for carbines and rifles only.
Seems like it was intended for a longer barrel such as PPS SMGs. Just goes to show how different the exact same round will perform with a simple difference in the flake of powder you use (cough early M16s cough)

Should of bought one even ~15 years ago, hate it that I missed that boat. Well that and the $50~100 Mosin Nagant too. Glad I just bought an excellent condition Star BM because those are going to run out soon and skyrocket in price. I'm keen on picking up another one soon just in case... I missed the boat on Star Super B's.

that's strange here in South Africa there go for R1000 ($120) to R4000 ($480), keep in mind a G19 is R10 000 ($1200)

So its 380 bullet weights and 357mag velocity. Why isn't there more love for this round I would think a Hornady critical defense would be great.
Because .357 Sig does everything the Tokarev round does and then some these days. Not much point to the Tokarev these days sadly... its a fun round, I own plenty of guns in the caliber, but there simply arent really any defensive options sans PPU and those fail to expand constantly or have a very minimal expansion.
Christopher yeah honestly if I was going to go that route I have a bunch of 135gr .40 corbon JHPs that do the same sans the flat trajectory. Just like 9mm makarov that beats out 380 every time but good luck getting good ammo for that
Finding Makarov ammo is easy, finding defense loads that expand consistently and reliably is tough. Hornady dropped them from their Custom line with the XTP bullet, you can get the Critical Defense with the FTX, but that stuff tends under penetrate constantly.
But then you've got calibers like 9x25 Dillon, which with a 6 inch barrel and 90gr projectile can get 2,000 fps.
Christopher yeah I meant that good defensive ammo is hard to find for just that reason of hornady dropping the xtp. Interesting mention of 9x25 I never see it except for reloads at gun shows. I'm more interested in micro pistols and the potential for packing the most power in my front pocket all the time compared to the 10mm I carry part of the time.
Well, 9x25 Dillon with a 125gr projectile which you can get loaded up from Underwood with a gun like a G29 with a 9x25 conversion barrel is capable of pushing out over 1550 fps with 125gr projectiles from a 3 1/4 inch barrel.
All the big companies like Underwood, Buffalo Bore, Double Tap, and others known for loading up hot perform roughly the same, but I'd pass on the Double Tap as they have consistently lied about performance to make sales.
Honestly though I'm a bit surprised 9x18 Ultra never caught on in the US at all. Performance is nearly identical to Makarov, but uses a traditional .355 caliber round so loading it would be much simpler. Alas it's really mostly popular in Europe and South America due to some gun laws down there. Although a few companies over the years produced guns in that caliber here. You can find the ammo, just often its fairly expensive though.
But for Makarov, the next best thing is Silver Bear JHP's. They do expand fairly well and fairly consistently. They can be had for fairly cheap too. I find them online sold in bulk a lot.
I used a Yugo M57 with surplus ammo to make vent holes in a burn barrel made from a new 55 gal steel drum. Zipped through both sides easier than a drill from 10 yards out.

Wish I could send you some of the Russian and Chinese military 7.62x25 we sell where I work, but Canada won't let us export it to the US. It is REALLY hot stuff! Ridiculous out of a surplus TT33 pistol. Comparing it to the PPU we have is like comparing hot .357 to wadcutter 38's. And it is steel-core to boot making it even nastier. It was definitely designed for sub-machine gun use not handgun as the 5 foot long fireball out of a pistol is just wasting powder.
You can buy 7.62x25 here in US... bought 3 boxes last week.

I love the .45 but there are other rounds that perform well....and i love the 1911 and single action revolvers...but thats not my only choice
Doesn't it come down to finding the right balance between the two (torque to weight and power to weight) to get the vehicle to do what you want it to, and too much of either cause problems with control?
What you intend the round for is how you choose. Light and fast is great for hydro-static shock and punching through armor. Heavier projectiles make for better brush guns and destroying cover. Recoil scales with the ejected mass so lighter is better for control while higher mass rounds lose their energy slower and thus are better at extended ranges. WHICH AMMO??.............What is the job???
The higher the caliber, the more the drag. The higher the mass of the projectile, the more the momentum. Energy increases as mass and velocity increase. However, the mass is directly proportional while the energy increases at the SQUARE of the velocity. So, if you double the mass, it doubles the energy, but if you double the velocity, it QUADRUPLES the energy.
Of course, there is no free lunch. The energy of the propellant creates the energy in the projectile. Momentum/recoil equals mass times velocity; not squared. If you look at the answers below, you can see for the same amount of energy is less recoil if you go with less mass and more velocity.

Was showing my buddy how crazy the penetration is for the Tokarev...Fished a 10" thick paralam out of a construction dumpster. He used his .357 magnum and it chewed on it some but the Tokarev went through it completely on the second shot. That stuff is fun to shoot and the pistol seems to point shoot quite well without the sights.

Ahh the 66th...what memories. I was in 1st bde 4ID most of my career and had a lot of buddies in 1/66 AR, while I was in 1/22 INF as a tanker because of the damn combined arms battalion structure.
I was SO excited to see Paul presenting this caliber. I love shooting the 7.62x25 through my Tokarev's and CZ-52. Pick up a Tokarev if you don't have one yet. They are tons of fun.
Just picked up a Makarov and Star BM so a Tokarev is next on my list followed by a Zastava M70 pistol!
That's so great! The Makarov (mine is a Bulgarian) is another favorite to shoot. I am a history buff so having these Cold War representatives in my collection is a joy. Have fun with your great surplus pistols, man!!
Brilliant! Thanks! I also have a Bulgarian Makarov (1995 mfg.). Mine is super clean with only minor holster wear around the muzzle--wanted an older one but I did also want a good shooter and the barrel is pretty much brand new and almost in unfired condition so I'll take it and hunt an older one (Eastern German if I can find it) later on. Not sure what these Bulgarian Makarov's are really valued at but I paid $249 for it and I'm happy with that. I'm also a history buff (small world!) so naturally this has some bearing on how my collecting and usage goes for firearms. By the end of the year I hope to have at least a Tokarev and a Mosin Nagant 91/30 in the collection.

My first handgun was a Zastava Tokarev clone in 7.62x25. I got the gun and a 2520 round crate of Russian surplus ammo for like $600 Canadian. First day out I shot 700 rounds through that gun...so much fun!
S&B is one of my go to. I first bought it because I found out it’s what cz uses at its factory for accuracy and function testing. Good enough for me. Cheap and powerful training ammo.

I’ve always wondered why no one has made a modern polymer framed pistol in 7.62x25. I honestly think that they would sell pretty well.
I am coming back to this after hearing of the .30 Super Carry, and the entire round reminds me of 7.62 Tok. I love 7.62 tok and its a great little round. Wish it was more available and that there were more guns available in it.
some gunsmiths do modify modern 9mm to use 7.62x25 . Probably not a common practice but in some countries where the 7.62 x 25 is really popular.
There's a company or two that builds AR uppers in this caliber.

In Pakistan you will get every kind of handgun made for 7.62×25 round. 😅 even made on cnc machines. Berreta style, tt style, 1911 style. Etc
I own a 1952 Romanian Tork and using the right ammo (NOT the corrosive surplus stuff sold by Classic Firearms that splits the case when fired about 40% of the time) it is one of the most accurate pistols I own. I recently found that you can easily make 7.62 x 25 ammo using .223/5.56 brass and a few simple tools. It then allows you to play with powders and projectiles to have a very formidable round. That is by far the most economical and best results I have found from this caliber. Once fired 5.56 brass is readily available, thicker walled and can take the hot load this caliber is meant to produce without splitting the case. Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

More manufacturers should make guns in this caliber.
I'd rather see an 8 round revolver or bullpup auto pistol with .223 Remington. Anything long on magazine and short on barrel [2"] under 7" long to fit my big paws and pockets would be nice. My closed fist is 4". My LCP w/o extended mag is 2" and most pocket pistols are less than 3". My pockets typically open to 5" and some to 7". I am surprised someone has not come up with a switchblade pop-out sight to increase sight-radius.
Not that we here in the USA can get them (firearm embargo on Chinese guns) but there is a Sig 226 "clone" chambered in 7.62 x 25 Tokarev. It is called the Dominion / Norinco Arms P762. Our friends in Canada can and there are videos out there of our Northern Neighbors plinking with them.
So Arex should make one if Sig won't do it.

I have several tokarevs in 7.62-25, i have tested one with several different ammo on flack jackets and other body armor. Everytime they go all the way through and when i find the projectiles, you coud probably reload them and shoot them again. My 1953 model tokarev has over 800 rounds without a malfunction, decent guns. I just wish i could get the surplus again, 1400 rounds for 60 dollars. I always water base clean them when shooting surplus, just to make sure no corrosive junk messes up my firearm. Love the old round. Great informative video!!

I was hoping you'd shoot the hollow point through the longer barrel into the meat target and see if the higher velocity bullets compared to the handgun showed any better expansion

Surprising that, at 1200+ FPS, the HPs didn't expand at all. His .38 Special vids showed that the slower (~650 FPS) rounds wouldn't expand, the +P ammo would boost it up by ~150-200 FPS and they'd start expanding. So, ~850 FPS to get a .38 caliber round to expand, but a .30 caliber round won't expand at 1200+ FPS? Sounds like an ammunition design problem, maybe.

I've made some pretty smokin' reloads in this caliber. The Hornady bullet made for the .30 Mauser does great. I've also loaded some real hot rounds with 115gr cast M1 Carbine bullets and WC 820 powder (surplus 30 carbine pulldown powder)

We need a .327 Federal Magnum series. EDIT: I started a series and it's now on my channel with ballistic/meat target testing. Absolutely love the cartridge in my SP101 and S&W 632-1 Stainless powerport. 100 gr bullet @ 1450 FPS in a 3” revolver with 16” of penetration in Gel and expansion to .5”, 440 foot pounds of ME is hard to argue with. Plus you get six rounds in a revolver that would normally hold five.

ferna2294 Oh yeah. You can hit up to 1700 fps from a 5" barrel GP100. In real world firearms any longer and you actually lose velocity. 20" rifle puts you back around 1600
And all .327 ammo is designed for use in a 3" barrel @1450fps so even the 'cheap' factory American Eagle target soft points expand and make awesome defensive or hunting ammo. The hottest .327 recoils the same as .38spl +P but with a little more blast and noise.
Personally believe it's the best snub nose cartridge ever made.

The best part of this whole video is Paul shooing the "Papasha"! How cool is that! The Soviet nickname for the full auto, open bolt PPS during WW2, which means "daddy". I bought the same repod and my son started shooting it (along with our Romanian TTC and Yugo M57) at age 10. This Pioneer Arms "pistol" is a lot of gun for the money. I had my reservations at first when I inspected the trigger group but it's held up well over round count. I picked mine up on sale for about $375 from Classic or Atlantic a few years ago and it came with three or four 25 round magazines. I have at least 500 rounds of corrosive ammo (maybe closer to a thousand?) and another 500 rounds of non-corrosive through it, withought a hitch. I can ring steel at 100 yards with SB FMJ all day long and can hit 200 yard targets with almost the consistency of my 300 Blackout pistol using a dot. My PPU hollow points do expand through the Papasha but weak to no expansion through the Tokarevs. Honestly, the pistols are super cool - the best $200 milsurp value on the market... get one before they're literally gone... and if you get a trigger pack as light as the one that came in my 1953 Romanian version, the single action shooting experience is as fun as any pistol I've fired. My Yugo is heavier, despite my best polishing efforts but it shoots well enough to still enjoy. I conceal carry my Romanian TTC on occasion simply to mix things up with my Sig P365 or Glock 27 daily carry guns. The short, 8 round single stack grip keep the gun hidden under my shirt better than the longer, 9 round Yugo version. I carry handload XTPs that have DEVASTATING effects on watermelons, right up there with my 357 Sig hollow points and I can't stress enough how impressive the explosion is when you actually see what this round does with an expanding projectile; the only real disappointing part of this video. But at the end of the day, for me, the 7.62x25 begins and ends with the PPS and it's kind of ironic that it's the gun that got my son peeled away from the X-box long enough to start actually enjoying his own guns I bought him starting when he turned 8. And the fact that you can carry a papaha in Call of Duty is what caused to me make the effort to figure out the controls so that now we play video games together (I'm 48). Thank you Georgy Shpagin and Paul Harrell! Great video and that pinned flash hider gives your PPS a very unique look. I like it.

Having said that, I had Reeds 7.62x25 85g. XTPs loaded in CZ52 and put down a South Texas Whitetail a client hit badly in January 2021. I put two rounds in the left shoulder as he finally wedged himself in a large mesquite fork. One was a pass through and the other was lodged under the hide of the off side shoulder at about 10 yards. Acceptable expansion. Still have the bullet. Ended the chase right there too. I can't down them.
Great video as always! I have an idea for a segment. My wife is extremely recoil sensitive and only weighs 105lbs. with very weak hands. However, she has been training for her handgun license. Finding something small enough for her little hands with low enough recoil north of a .22 mag. has been a challenge. She was shooting .38 wad cutters in a J frame* (settled on after months of searching), but could only tolerate about 10 rounds a day. Nothing heavier in .38... .380 in a small pistol is pushing it for her. So, I figured she needed 2 J frames, 1 in .22 for practice and one in .38 for self defense. However, I happened upon another option: LCR in .327 Fed. Mag. Of course, the .327 is way too hot for her, but that gun holds 6 instead of the typical 5 rounds, and shoots the .32 S&W (short), .32 S&W long, .32 H&R magnum, and the .327 Fed. Mag. This means she can shoot rounds close to that of .22, .380, .38, and .357 mag. Problem solved. She can now practice with very fun loads, grow into shooting, and up load to a hotter round when she travels or carries. Just a thought...there are lots of shooters that can benefit from this loading, and a lot of interesting history regarding the .32 S&W.

The 7.62 Tok like the 30 Carbine will penetrate 3A body armor, they penetrate very well almost to well.

just a quick shot out to those considering doing modifications to 'pistols' that aren't handguns. there's a term the atf uses called constructive intent. basically, if you have 1 or any part used to convert a pistol into a rifle, you have committed a felony. just keep that in mind and do as Paul suggested and seek appropriate counsel. an example is having an ar rifle and having a spare 10" barrel. or having an ar pistol and having a spare carbine buffer tube. etc.
Constructive intent has never been used in court, and never will be.

We got the pistols when they were cheap. After a canoe trip where Brian nearly lost his Sig the idea of a $100 hand gun had a lot of appeal. The sub guns We bulk ordered so got them at a very good price, so it was worth it. Now the prices have gone up so much there's not much point in buying them. The best thing about the PPS 43 is that it can be customized to fit anyone's needs. You should see the peep sight Saul put on his.

I had forgotten how inaccurate the surplus ammo was…I just spent a small fortune on two tins of it! Not a lot of options at the moment, though.
I don't know if you can find any, but I have gotten good results from the Sellier and Bellot ammo.

In June 2021, I was able to get some PPU and S&B at 70 cents per round, just couple months later it is $1.00 per round! crazy

Use VihtaVuori N310 powder and the Lehigh Defense Xtreme Cavitator Bullets 30 Carbine (308/7.62 Diameter) 85 Grain Solid Copper projectile to take away the flash and it would out perform a 5.7 and some .223.

this is one of my favorite caliber. even built a custom 1911 in the caliber. it's a 6 inch slide with a parkerised finish. I have a few com bloc guns in this one and never felt under gunned with it. I use mostly S&B ammo

My own two cents about the "inherent inaccuracy" in addition to the poor East Bloc ammo is thus:
Bear in mind that I do not have direct sources, I only got it from a guy I trust about these sorts of things, for all that tells you.
The thing with Tokarev pistols was that their barrel lives were extremely short. 200-300 rounds would wear it out to the point of accuracy problems. I only heard this about the Tokarev, but it's one of the most common 7.62x25mm guns seen, and I can't imagine it was the only gun to feature this issue.
This was likely exaggerated by the later adoption of the PM, which was subsonic and had a fixed barrel instead of a tilting one, plus less recoil, flash and noise, making rapid fire more accurate and making flinching less prevalent with inexperienced shooters.
Feel free to correct me if I got a detail wrong.

The 7.62 is actually 7.82 mm or .308 caliber with .075 inch of area with 36,259 psi max with Case capacity 1.09 cm3
But the .357 sig is 9.02 mm .355 caliber. with .099 inch of area 44,240 psi psi max with Case capacity 1.27 cm3
The .357 sig is 1.32 larger or 32% larger with over 22% more max pressure and over 16% more powder capacity.
The .357 sig and 9mm are both 9.02mm or .355 caliber.
The .357 sig is essentially a 10mm necked down to 9mm.
John Lloyd Scharf. The 9x25 dillon is a necked down 10mm. The 357 sig has a slightly shorter case similar to 40 S&W along with being necked down.
