As a gunsmithing student, we at the school often make Hi-point the butt of a lot of jokes, but in all seriousness, even though I dont like Hi-point pistols, I can definitely respect them. When I was at SHOTShow 2020, I made it over to the Hipoint booth to see the progress on the new YC-9 G2 they've been working on for a little while. And I have a lot of respect for the rep who openly stated, "We aren't trying to compete with Sig or S&W, we want to give people who can't afford those more expensive pistols a fair chance to protect themselves and their families. Not everyone can afford to drop 500, 600, 900 dollars on a high end pistol. We set a goal for price, 200 dollars for example, and we work our asses off to make as nice a pistol as possible for that price. And as technology improves, what were once expensive additions, can be cheap standard features."

I never got to meet you, Paul, but you did it the best and I’m glad to revisit anytime.
I don't know when the debate is gonna end on this gun. The bottom line is, those of us who like them because we own and shoot them, know that they're decent guns for the price point. The detractors and other assholes who won't shut up about this can only ever bring up the same moot argument over and over again. They criticize the very manufacturing qualities of the firearm for the very reasons that make it inexpensive. I am kinda tired of hearing it.
I own 8 guns right now, but if I could only afford a hi point. I'd get one. Bottom line. If you can afford a prettier, lighter, or more "reliable" firearm, go for it. Either way, make sure you can trust it, and you're armed.
I lay away all the time with attractive girls. I still have a 357 mag at home. The best line of defense at home I like to cout on is an RPG. What day of what month is it regarding the 2nd one ? 4/1 ?
@@Jasonhb07 Yeah I have no regrets having my kid things ended up working out. LoL it was hard for the first few years but as long as I kept everyone well fed and a roof over our heads they were happy and that kept me happy.
They actually discourage doing so. It's made to run dirty, and occasionally spray down with solvent like gun scrubber. Not my style, but I can see the logic. Since their primary market is people who don't know guns, that has the practical effect of making the gun more reliable- the customer can't mess up the gun as easily if he never takes it apart.
Growing up, my parents didnt have alot of extra money. We got by just fine, but my Dad couldnt go out and drop over $500 on a gun just because he wanted to. The only guns he had was a single shot 12 gauge, a .30-30 bolt gun, a marlin .22 autoloader and a Hi-Point C9. He never cleaned the Hi-Point and as far as i can remember he never had anymore than 1 or 2 malfunctions in it in about 18 years. He still has the Hi-Point and now that him and my mom have a little more extra money he was able to get himself some nicer guns. He still shoots that Hi-Point from time to time with his buddies as a joke. Moral of the story is: if a Hi-Point is all you can reasonable afford, thats still better than nothing at all

I'd take a 1911 from Colt over one from Les Baer or any other unauthorized manufacturer of 1911s any day, especially one made in the 1950s that was in mint condition and unmodified.

The only authorized manufacturer of _commercial_ 1911s is, and always has been, Colt. There were several other authorized 1911 manufacturers, e.g., Springfield Armory, Remington UMC, Remington Rand, Ithaca, Union Switch & Signal, Singer, but their authorization was only for military contract M1911s and/or M1911A1s, and the last of those were manufactured in 1945.

Colt is the most ripped-off gun company in the United States, maybe even in the world. Three distinct types of guns for which Colt was the rightsholder, are copied by dozens upon dozens of companies: 1911, AR-15, and Single Action Army.

Might as well spend an extra 40 dollars and get a shield which actually comes in cheaper than the clunky Hi point after the 50 dollar rebate and is 5 times the gun with 100 times more after market parts..
My parents bought a hi-point 9mm for home protection a few years ago. I cringed. They chose it purely based on price. A few trips to the range and it became obvious my elderly mother couldn't load a round by herself. Long story short they have a new gun and I have a hi point 9mm. I'd like to say how much I hate the gun and how terrible it is. It is everything everyone hates- it's ugly, it's heavy, it's ugly, but it shoots a bullet straight. If i shoot it enough to get used to the trigger, I can do as good with it as any other pistol. I have nicknamed it 'moped' because I love to shoot it but I don't want my friends to see me with it. Thank you for your honest and true evaluation of the hi point, it's why I am one of your 50,000.

I work at a large firearms retailer that sells about 50 Hi-Points a month. Surprisingly we don't see very many come back to be sent for repair compared to the Taurus millennium, M&P Shields, Kahrs, or even little Ruger LCP's. I think the main difference though is the average hipoint owner might run 200 rounds (of .45acp @ $0.35 a round equating to 1/3 the value of the gun) through the gun IN THEIR LIFETIME than the 200 rounds an average person will put through the gun in one range session. The Hi-points that do come back are from people attempting to make them full auto, people that didn't read the disassembly instructions and just beat the slide off the frame, or ones the are trying to load .45 Long Colt in their .45 ACP.
Rifles First It is interesting the different demographics of people that buy them. Half are gang bangers and the other half are very politically vocal Vietnam vets that swear buy USA made and lifetime warranty as if all other guns will spontaneously combust after their warranty expires

Dozer 1642 I agree with you I am retired and we live on a budget. Last year after some research I chose the hipoint 45. out the door with an extra mag. tax it was just under $200. I did have some feed problems with it and after polishing the feed ramp it now works great. Yes its heavy and ugly but I don't care. I pull the trigger it goes bang and most days I hit what I'm shooting at. All my ammo is my own reloads and all are +P. After about 200 rounds all I can say is I like it and would buy it again. Taking the right grip off and letting that one piece "fall out" disables the mag safety. Mine "fell out" as soon as I got the gun home after buying it. No more worries about the mag having to be in to function check.
I like the mag safety you can keep a round in the chamber then you slap in a mag throw off the safety and your ready to fire I took it out at first then thought better of it. Plus I don't have young kids to worry about.
A fair evaluation and I pretty much agree. I've sold a good number of High Points and people buy them because they've heard good things from their friends. Would I suggest a better gun? Yes, but the High Point does satisfy the First Rule of Gunfighting: Have a gun. A note, the High Point company has a no BS lifetime warranty. I've been handling them for a long time and have only seen it invoked once. That took a total of 10 business days to get back.
Great to know. I think they like the quality control of returning them. Iraqveteran8888 did extensive testing on them starting with the assumption they were crap and going to fail. He even tried puttting a bolt in it, filling it with gunpowder, and pulling the trigger from a distance. It survived and was shot again afterward. I consider myself an idiot when it comes to "fixing" anything. I drive cars until they are ready to be towed away after 400,000 miles. This seems to be like the VW in the 1960s. Everyone bashed it, but it got them from point A to point B.
there is a youtube video of a guy dragging a hi-point down a dirt road behind an SUV for 2 miles, he fucntion checked it and shot it after each half mile.... after 2 miles it no longer functioned, he called the company, told them what he did, and they took the gun back, and since they could, they fixed it, completely free... they also would have replaced it completely, if they had not been ble to repair it.... Hi-Points re not the BS that gun folks tend to make them out to be

When you spend $169.95 on a pistol you may need to defend your life and it’s all you can afford, you need to be able to find relevant information on it from someone who has some experience with pistols who won’t BS you. Ive owned my Hi-Point 9mm over 15 years,,,,Only gun I own that doesn't get disassembled and cleaned after every time being shot,,,Only gets a patch down the pipe...Trigger is great and never jams. Fun pistol.
That's been pretty much my experience with my c9 as well. It really doesn't need a thorough in the field cleaning. After a few hundred rounds then at that point you should probably take it home and take it apart to clean it. But I haven't had any serious failures with it, even the few failures after a hundred rounds are when the slide gets a bit gummed up and you have to just slap it forward. No stove pipes or deformed shells, and I have put more than a thousand rounds through it.
I have had 2 ejection failures. My daughter mistakenly loaded 9mm parabellum rounds into my 40. Both fired but failed to eject the split cases. She took the ammo from my junk and loose ammo box.

Yeah, their triggers are not great. Go rent a walther or h&k. You will know how good a stock trigger can feel. I have a hi point C9, some S&Ws, an aftermarket glock 19 and an H&K VP9.Night and day difference.

I started with a Hi-point .45 about 20 years ago after the subject of a police manhunt in my neighborhood tried to get in my house. Since, I have acquired other firearms but for what it is, the Hi-point is more than sufficient. I don't know of anyone who wants what I have bad enough to volunteer to shot by it or volunteer to have a couple of hundred pounds dogs as fashion accessories.
Thank You sir, for the honest review!! I appreciate it very much. I know this video is kinda old - but what the hell... The 1st pistol I ever bought was a 45acp Hi-Point JHP. Several years ago I was at a gun store with my son-in-law. I didn't know much about pistols at all. He bought a used 45acp $550+ Glock, which to me is just a lot of money!! While there, I saw the Hi-Point on the bottom shelf - It was 45acp too!! New and less than $200 out the door!! I did put a better rear sight on it and am now quite familiar with it. At the range shooting with my friends, I usually get a LOT of negative comments - But I shoot just as good as most and better than some!! I got into reloading (because of this cheap pistol) and have run over 5,000 rounds through my Hi-Point and it's still working fine. BUT it certainly is showing some wear. And one thing I don't think you mentioned is the lifetime warranty. I'll probably run a few thousand more rounds through my JHP and then I will send it back to get refurbished. Several times I have run 400-500 rounds through it in one day. I must admit - The main reason I keep shooting my Hi-Point is because of how much others hate it. Shooting better than some of the gun-snobs I know is SO satisfying!! Buying this cheap Hi-Point helped me to get very interested in shooting and reloading. I even have an FFL now. And yes, I've sold a lot of Hi-Points!! (-: Love your TH-cam Videos!!
My first pistol was the 45 HP to, wish I still had it. It was one of the first off the line. Didnt keep it long. But this year bought a 40sw for 169.00 plus tax new. Made in America, for the avrege person to protect their family. It blows my mind about all the negative slack they receive. Plus lifetime warranty WOW. Just think if Americans would of pulled that stunt on H. FORD we wouldnt be driven today!
Paul, don't be so hard on HiPoint. It is an American company with the best warranty on the planet. No questions asked. The owner created HiPoint for one reason, for the poor folks to have a chance at self/home defense. It is not a range/hunting gun. Try their carbine, you'll love it.
thing about the carbine, i was told at Turners that the warranty only lasts as long as you dont disassemble the carbine yourself. i asked how would i clean it then, and the clerk said i would have to send it to Hi-point for maintenance and then have them send it back. idk if the guy was just pulling shit out of his ass, but ive never heard of a gun you buy that you cant disassemble yourself.
That clerk was bullshitting out his ass, I just looked up the Hi-Point warranty on their website, and it says nothing about voiding the warranty by doing maintenance, it says the opposite, it says it should be disassembled every 1500-2000 rounds. I don't think the warranty on mine is valid as I got it for $125 at a gun show with a strange conversion kit that makes it look a bit like a Beretta Storm. It's fairly rusty. I've never bothered cleaning it, and it functions great, even with steel cased ammo. It's a very reliable weapon.
All the Hi-Point reviews I've seen done tend to conclude pretty much the same thing. It's a handgun that will function reasonably well... but... they're big, ugly, and field stripping can be a challenge as can finding a proper holster. Despite being a pistol that just plain WORKS, this isn't a handgun one would choose for conceal-carry but just the same, could be used for home protection or as a "knock around" handgun. Even with my limited budget I chose NOT to buy one, instead choosing a Glock 19. That was ten years ago and I absolutely love it.
Now that you mentioned it. My new (and very first) Smith and Wesson revolver came with moonclips I got the "Governer" and it will shoot the 410 shotshells, the 45 long colt and the 45ACP with the moonclips. "Downside" to the moonclips is that I need to find a "tool" to take the shells out of them. I haven't had it out for range time.
@@roberttosa2560 That was a really lucky shot. The chamber was the only part that is made out of good steel. Garand Thumb threw his into a rock and it landed on the Zamak slide, cracking it.
Paul speaks about the functionality of the .45 High Point, when I first bought one of these High Point .45s, Gander Mountain was first introducing them, and they were 100 bucks! I thought, well .45 for 100 bucks? Its obviously a peice of junk, but what the hell. I bought a bunch of .45 rounds and proceeded to put the gun through its paces with function and accuracy. At 0-25 yards it proved to be accurate enough for personal defense, of course could I trust it with my life as far as functioning when I needed it to? Without cleaning it once, I sent over 1500 rounds through it over the next few months. It stove piped once. I cleared it, and continued to put another 500 or so rounds through it without one function issue. Then I just decided after that I clean it. I still have it, and it still remains reliable every time I shoot it. But say what you want. Its all I could afford
I'm kind of the opposite.. my first purchase was a colt 1911.. still have it.. I have bought several other handguns and now I'm looking at the hi point c9 just because of curiosity.. the vast majority of reviews are good.. and I think they look kind of neat.. I know I'm in the minority there
@James Branham...I too own other guns many...and after reading reviews for curiosity I bought a C9....Then a 9mm PCC...and a JHP 45 Hi Point ....So glad I did 0 issues with any of them...Function as good as my Smiths and Rugers...glad I got these pre inflation ...can only imagine what 45 ACP pistols gonna cost in 2022!😥😥
A few years ago I bought a new H-P .45 from a pawn shop, $45, because the owner hates them. I did what Paul suggested, took it apart and cleaned/lubed it, it wasn't dirty, being new, but it needed a lube. That powder coat they use is sort of random and thick in spots and needed sanding or wear. To that end I also worked the slide like 2,000 times over a month. Then I got some ammo that I liked the reviews of and seemed like a reasonable round for me to carry in this weapon. Remington Golden Saber HPJ, GS45APB Hollow Point 230 grain. A good amount of it. I went to my local range, got laughed at, but sighted it in so I felt confident with it. I've had it for three years now and have put a few thousand rounds down lane. Never had any issues after initial sighting. I do have much better guns, but I trust this one just as much. Can't say I love anything about it except that trust.
Hi point specifically states not to clean the gun until you put at least 1500 rounds through it otherwise it causes premature wear it needs to be broken in dry
Sometimes its nice to have a gun you just don't care about. No worrying about properly cleaning it, no worries about scuffing the furniture, etc. I bought a Remington 870 clone from Centerfire systems a few years back. $119 shipped, plus it overlapped with a sitewide 10% off sale, and I had an additional 10% off coupon. Got it for under $100, no regrets.

He had an amazingly entertaining channel. He was called Gun Drama Johnny. And at the end of every one of his videos he played a clip of Paul Harrel saying "This gun fits my hand better than this one does". It was priceless. Thats about the best I could do at explaining the channel.
Holster and product case problem? The Hi-point is not meant to be holstered anyway. It's meant to be packaged in a shoe box from Payless and holstered by rubber bands
I bought a Hi Point 45 acp. about 4 years ago. In that time I have had only one malfunction. Failure to feed and it was cheap ammo. I switched to Remington and have not had any problem. I bought because at the time I was short of funds and did not see that changing any time soon. No it is not a good carry gun. No it is not pretty. Yes it is heavy. Yes it is bulky. Yes it is made with cheap material. It does shoot though and I can shoot it as accurately as I can any other hand gun. It is prefect for what I use it for. It stays on the night stand at night and in the seat of the truck during the day . If stolen I am not out a lot of money. Would I rather have a Colt 1911? Sure but I would not carry it in my truck because of the investment I would have to make.
@subcomandante marcos I bought a Rock Island Armory 1911 about 10 years ago for 350 bucks. It's been my daily carry since I bought it. I have been extremely satisfied with it, worth every penny. Not picky about ammo either.
A couple of things. First, in the hipoint manual, it says to run a large number of rounds before breaking it down for complete cleaning. Just run a snake through it and a dab of oil after shooting. You can actually send it to Hipoint and they will break it down, clean it and send it back if you like. Secondly, it's a gun you can buy new for less than $200 out the door. It performs exactly as designed and adverised, goes bang for cheap.
I have the Hi Point .45 and I love it. It is not a daily carry, but is a home defense gun. Out of the box I had great groups at 15 yards. I haven't had any issues with reliability and have had no FTF of FTE. And I like the way it looks. All that said, I think that this was an excellent video. Love the channel and the reviews.
Another outstanding video. Again you showed your professionalism by not doing what many others on you tube have done. down graded the gun and anyone that happens to own one. Not everyone can financially justify five hundred to one thousand dollars on a single firearm. what are they to do? do without? i agree if you can afford a better firearm by all means do so. if not this gun would beat an empty hand. i have seen this very gun for sale in my hometown for as little as $159.00 dollars. not much more than an average .22 rifle. i used to work for a large gun retailer here in OKC. my manager would berate me for not always pushing SMITH AND WESSON, COLT, BERRETA ALL OF THE TOP LINE MODELS. Well i found not everyone wanted or could afford those pricy guns. so a lot of my sales were TAURUS, CHARTER ARMS ROCK ISLAND, guns of that genre. although i did my share of the top line firearms. When our sales tallies for the month were totaled I consitently outsold all the other retail associates. so after all is said and done i suppose the moral is a gun in the hand is better than nothing. again thanks for another fine presentation. “Demolition Ranch” Does a video where he shoots the Hi-Point. It’s actually his torture test. The Hi-Point gets shot in the slide. The Hi-Point. DID NOT FAIL TO SHOOT.
He also did a video where he took several .45 Hi-Points, filled the barrels solid with things like sealing foam, Line-X, and even concrete, and fired the guns. Each gun (even the concrete) cleared the obstruction from the barrel without blowing up. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t like Hi-Points, but that was impressive.

So for one-fourth the price of a 1911 or equivalent you can have an entirely functional .45 whose main problem is difficulty of reassembly. I give the Hi Point two thumbs up.
Right around 500 rounds through mine, with no stoppages. My friend with a 1911, about half the rounds through his with 3 bad stoppages. The look on his face while I was able to keep on shooting...priceless.
Add $100 for a holster, costs of extra mags, and costs of lost small parts... No thanks. I'll take any other major gun maker like Glock, Sig, CZ, etc. for a trivial extra up front expense but far better product, with easier carry-ability, take down and cleaning, better trigger, etc. Over time that extra money is a few pennies per day.
That is without a doubt the most honest and fair review of a Hi Point not because of the firearms used to compare but the fairness given to it in comparison and shooting by him. Always great work and very good presentation.
Hi Paul I've been a subscriber of yours for some time. I really enjoy your content. I just watched your Hi point video. I like what you had to say. However I have owned a few hi points over the years. 1 I purchased for 60 dollars. The one thing you didn't mention about hi point is the service you get from hi point firearms. They are phenomenal. I ordered several replacement springs, and even a firing pin. All of this for a used weapon. I didn't even have to pay shipping. They friendly and very helpful. Also they have a lifetime guarantee even on a second hand firearm. And they stand behind it. I think with proper training you can be very well defended by a hi point. There’s a video on TH-cam about things you learn working in a gun store. The guy says you wouldn’t believe how many hi points get sold and how many glocks don’t.
The Hi Point is not a handgun I'd consider. It's a huge pistol, alleged to having a long and rough trigger pull. For personal protection, I want a better trigger pull. I've got neighbors, and I don't like the idea of a .45ACP as a bedside weapon, because that heavy bullet has enough power to penetrate walls. I want less muzzle flash because I intend to shoot more than once. But, I am sympathetic towards shooters who have to stay within budget, like married folks. For home defense, it might be more suitable to buy a used handgun of better design and quality, rather than a cheaply made new handgun.
@mind fornication - Sheet rock and stucco versus the .45 projectile. If I was living in a brick house, or an adobe house, or log cabin, I would agree with you. Of course, I haven't put this to a test. I would, but my neighbors might complain.

Haters can be... what you want me to be. I have had a C8 for nearly 20 years. It is a heavy ass brick, but it has NEVER FAILED! I have S&W's, Rugers, Sig's and colts. All of those pistols in calibers from 22LR to .45ACP are fine pieces of hand held artillery, but each has failed a time or two. That damned brick C8 that bounces around in my glove box NEVER HAS FAILED TO SHOOT!
My best friend bought a high point .45, it has a better trigger than my Glock 21, and it is at least as accurate, if not more accurate than my Glock. If a high point is all you can afford, more power to you!

Paul , good video. I do own a Hi Point JHP 45 and like it a lot. I have shot several thousand rounds thru it and except for some really hot handloads I have had zero malfunctions. Also I did do some modifications to the sear / striker to lower the trigger pull and accuracy wise... From a table that I can rest my arms on I can hit a 12 oz can at 50 yards more than 50 % of the time. I paid $ 150 for mine new, do not need to disassemble it really ever and yea it's ugly but this thing is as reliable as a chisel. To me it's a great gun and I can afford and do own many " better " pistols, I will not tell anyone it's junk, you didn't either but some just hate them because they are cheap.
Anybody thinking about getting a HiPoint pistol really needs to look at the S&W SD9VE or SD40VE. It's a complete redo of the old Sigma. Better trigger, real rails, etc. And depending on the sales, can be had well under $300. And it comes with 2 16 round magazines. It's essentially an extremely competent Glock clone at a fraction of the price. If you still hate the "defense trigger" it can be upgraded for $50 or under. Easy to take apart, well made, reliable as an anvil, nice ergonomics and accurate. And not ugly as hell. All for under $100 more than the Hi Point
Doug Elick those really are a good gun for the price range. I hate their triggers but the grip is comfortable and I really like how easy the slide is to rack. They are just a knock off glock that isn't black.
The stock SD9VE trigger is somewhat long and a little creepy until it has been worked a while. But Apex has both spring and trigger kits as does Galloway Precision (spring only). To my knowledge, Apex's spring kit lowers the pull weight and the trigger reduces travel. It also changes it to a Glock style trigger safety. I went the later (Galloway) route which preserves the stock trigger assy. but lightens and "de-creeps" the pull just enough to make it downright decent. But it's harder to install than the Apex kit. I asked for the kit / install as a B-day gift (they insist on celebrating) - my Dad who's been into firearms for 50 years or so wasn't so pleased with the fiddly nature of disassembling the lower. They do have a howto video of the process. Conversely, this man who has quite a collection, including a Glock with a butter smooth trigger job, picked up an SD9VE to knock about after handling mine. That's how I learned about Galloway - he had their kit installed on on his; I had the opportunity to handle my stock and his upgraded SD side by side. A few spring swaps transforms the SD9VE into what it should have been from the factory. Though perhaps it would have been *too* good at the price point. To anyone reading this, after playing with a few different lubes for this pistol, I've settled on Tetra grease. The action is by far the smoothest with a restrained amount on the friction points and it never seems to dry out like oils. Your mileage may vary, of course...
I have one sd9ve and I’d like to have five more to place around the house. They are fantastic guns for the price, work just as good as my $1400 1911(in that they both hit their target). Although my 1911 is better looking, no one cares how it looks when it’s needed for protection.
My Dad purchased the SD9VE for home defense after I suggested it to him, he was looking for a low cost pistol in 9mm for defense. It works flawlessly right out of the box. Trigger isn't the best, but for the money is tough to beat, plus they look better than a High Point. I would find it hard to go with a High Point, due to all the low points:)
I bought a Hi point 45, I actually like these guns, I have always liked large pistols "hand cannons" you could say. I have a lot of old antique guns that are a bit more complex to take apart and clean than more modern ones. For me I still love them though. And like you said, a 45 tends to get the job done regardless of the gun it came from. I like your way of speaking BTW 👍
I have been using revolvers since the early 1970s. Back in the early 1990s, my uncle introduced me to the 45 semi-automatic by gifting me a Hi-Point 45 model JH (not the newer model JHP). I have used it for decades, have never disassembled it for cleaning, and have never had problems with it. It is a great gun. I fell in love with 45acp ammunition and the 45 Hi-Point semi-automatic so much that I decided to purchase a second 45. The cost of my second 45, a new 45acp Heckler and Koch USP Elite, was about $1300. The cost of a new High-Point was about $200. Since the Hi-Point and the HK are both well-built, accurate, and reliable, the lower priced Hi-Point is more cost effective than the higher priced HK. The HK has a 6-inch barrel length. The Hi-Point has a 4.5 inch barrel length. I prefer the longer barrel. The HK slide is made of a magnetic steel metal. My magnetic pistol mount does not work on my Hi-Point because the Hi-Point slide is made of a non-magnetic zinc alloy metal. The HK uses 12-shot magazines. My Hi-Point uses 7-shot magazines. I prefer the higher ammo capacity of the HK. My HK has an adjustable rear sight. Newer Hi-Points have an adjustable rear sight but my older Hi-Point only has a fixed rear sight. I prefer an adjustable rear sight. My HK has a hammer firing pin. My Hi-Point has a striker firing pin. I prefer hammer firing pins.

Doing things as right as possible so as to avoid as much backlash as I could. I held each of the guns in my hand at the store and when I first held my glock 26 is felt like a handshake with God.
This video is a great example of why this is the best gun channel on YT. Paul is a no BS person and even though I've watched this one before, I STILL learned something. There was a time when all I could afford was a Hi-Point 9mm. I've watched this channel ever since and I have now graduated to much better models. Through it all, I have learved very valuable ways to think about shooting because of this channel. Other channels tell "what" to think, not "how" to think. As a gunsmithing student, we at the school often make Hi-point the butt of a lot of jokes, but in all seriousness, even though I dont like Hi-point pistols, I can definitely respect them. When I was at SHOTShow 2020, I made it over to the Hipoint booth to see the progress on the new YC-9 G2 they've been working on for a little while. And I have a lot of respect for the rep who openly stated, "We aren't trying to compete with Sig or S&W, we want to give people who can't afford those more expensive pistols a fair chance to protect themselves and their families. Not everyone can afford to drop 500, 600, 900 dollars on a high end pistol. We set a goal for price, 200 dollars for example, and we work our asses off to make as nice a pistol as possible for that price. And as technology improves, what were once expensive additions, can be cheap standard features."

I don't know when the debate is gonna end on this gun. The bottom line is, those of us who like them because we own and shoot them, know that they're decent guns for the price point. The detractors and other assholes who won't shut up about this can only ever bring up the same moot argument over and over again. They criticize the very manufacturing qualities of the firearm for the very reasons that make it inexpensive. I am kinda tired of hearing it.
I own 8 guns right now, but if I could only afford a hi point. I'd get one. Bottom line. If you can afford a prettier, lighter, or more "reliable" firearm, go for it. Either way, make sure you can trust it, and you're armed.

Took mine apart exactly twice. Never again. Gun Scrubber and fine spray lube. That'll have to do.
They actually discourage doing so. It's made to run dirty, and occasionally spray down with solvent like gun scrubber. Not my style, but I can see the logic. Since their primary market is people who don't know guns, that has the practical effect of making the gun more reliable- the customer can't mess up the gun as easily if he never takes it apart.
Most hi points have about 2-3 rounds put through them and are immediately thrown in the local river.

Growing up, my parents didnt have alot of extra money. We got by just fine, but my Dad couldnt go out and drop over $500 on a gun just because he wanted to. The only guns he had was a single shot 12 gauge, a .30-30 bolt gun, a marlin .22 autoloader and a Hi-Point C9. He never cleaned the Hi-Point and as far as i can remember he never had anymore than 1 or 2 malfunctions in it in about 18 years. He still has the Hi-Point and now that him and my mom have a little more extra money he was able to get himself some nicer guns. He still shoots that Hi-Point from time to time with his buddies as a joke. Moral of the story is: if a Hi-Point is all you can reasonable afford, thats still better than nothing at all

My parents bought a hi-point 9mm for home protection a few years ago. I cringed. They chose it purely based on price. A few trips to the range and it became obvious my elderly mother couldn't load a round by herself. Long story short they have a new gun and I have a hi point 9mm. I'd like to say how much I hate the gun and how terrible it is. It is everything everyone hates- it's ugly, it's heavy, it's ugly, but it shoots a bullet straight. If i shoot it enough to get used to the trigger, I can do as good with it as any other pistol. I have nicknamed it 'moped' because I love to shoot it but I don't want my friends to see me with it. Thank you for your honest and true evaluation of the hi point, it's why I am one of your 50,000.

A Game Face drop leg holster from Academy fits my JCP perfectly.

I work at a large firearms retailer that sells about 50 Hi-Points a month. Surprisingly we don't see very many come back to be sent for repair compared to the Taurus millennium, M&P Shields, Kahrs, or even little Ruger LCP's. I think the main difference though is the average hipoint owner might run 200 rounds (of .45acp @ $0.35 a round equating to 1/3 the value of the gun) through the gun IN THEIR LIFETIME than the 200 rounds an average person will put through the gun in one range session. The Hi-points that do come back are from people attempting to make them full auto, people that didn't read the disassembly instructions and just beat the slide off the frame, or ones the are trying to load .45 Long Colt in their .45 ACP.
Rifles First It is interesting the different demographics of people that buy them. Half are gang bangers and the other half are very politically vocal Vietnam vets that swear buy USA made and lifetime warranty as if all other guns will spontaneously combust after their warranty expires

Dozer 1642 I agree with you I am retired and we live on a budget. Last year after some research I chose the hipoint 45. out the door with an extra mag. tax it was just under $200. I did have some feed problems with it and after polishing the feed ramp it now works great. Yes its heavy and ugly but I don't care. I pull the trigger it goes bang and most days I hit what I'm shooting at. All my ammo is my own reloads and all are +P. After about 200 rounds all I can say is I like it and would buy it again. Did you get to retirement before buying your first gun
Taking the right grip off and letting that one piece "fall out" disables the mag safety. Mine "fell out" as soon as I got the gun home after buying it. No more worries about the mag having to be in to function check.
And then it can be used as a scraper for cleaning gunk out of hard to reach places in other guns, and be useful for something.

I like the mag safety you can keep a round in the chamber then you slap in a mag throw off the safety and your ready to fire I took it out at first then thought better of it. Plus I don't have young kids to worry about.

A fair evaluation and I pretty much agree. I've sold a good number of High Points and people buy them because they've heard good things from their friends. Would I suggest a better gun? Yes, but the High Point does satisfy the First Rule of Gunfighting: Have a gun.
A note, the High Point company has a no BS lifetime warranty. I've been handling them for a long time and have only seen it invoked once. That took a total of 10 business days to get back.
Great to know. I think they like the quality control of returning them. Iraqveteran8888 did extensive testing on them starting with the assumption they were crap and going to fail. He even tried puttting a bolt in it, filling it with gunpowder, and pulling the trigger from a distance. It survived and was shot again afterward. I consider myself an idiot when it comes to "fixing" anything. I drive cars until they are ready to be towed away after 400,000 miles. This seems to be like the VW in the 1960s. Everyone bashed it, but it got them from point A to point B.
there is a youtube video of a guy dragging a hi-point down a dirt road behind an SUV for 2 miles, he fucntion checked it and shot it after each half mile.... after 2 miles it no longer functioned, he called the company, told them what he did, and they took the gun back, and since they could, they fixed it, completely free... they also would have replaced it completely, if they had not been ble to repair it.... Hi-Points re not the BS that gun folks tend to make them out to be

Ive owned my Hi-Point 9mm over 15 years,,,,Only gun I own that doesn't get disassembled and cleaned after every time being shot,,,Only gets a patch down the pipe...Trigger is great and never jams. Fun pistol.
That's been pretty much my experience with my c9 as well. It really doesn't need a thorough in the field cleaning.
After a few hundred rounds then at that point you should probably take it home and take it apart to clean it. But I haven't had any serious failures with it, even the few failures after a hundred rounds are when the slide gets a bit gummed up and you have to just slap it forward.
No stove pipes or deformed shells, and I have put more than a thousand rounds through it.
I have had 2 ejection failures. My daughter mistakenly loaded 9mm parabellum rounds into my 40. Both fired but failed to eject the split cases. She took the ammo from my junk and loose ammo box.
mine is so old it's a model js made by Stallard the former name of the manufactory but the factory is only 18 miles from me

I started with a Hi-point .45 about 20 years ago after the subject of a police manhunt in my neighborhood tried to get in my house. Since, I have acquired other firearms but for what it is, the Hi-point is more than sufficient. I don't know of anyone who wants what I have bad enough to volunteer to shot by it or volunteer to have a couple of hundred pounds dogs as fashion accessories.

The 1st pistol I ever bought was a 45acp Hi-Point JHP. Several years ago I was at a gun store with my son-in-law. I didn't know much about pistols at all. He bought a used 45acp $550+ Glock, which to me is just a lot of money!! While there, I saw the Hi-Point on the bottom shelf - It was 45acp too!! New and less than $200 out the door!! I did put a better rear sight on it and am now quite familiar with it. At the range shooting with my friends, I usually get a LOT of negative comments - But I shoot just as good as most and better than some!!
I got into reloading (because of this cheap pistol) and have run over 5,000 rounds through my Hi-Point and it's still working fine. BUT it certainly is showing some wear. And one thing I don't think you mentioned is the lifetime warranty. I'll probably run a few thousand more rounds through my JHP and then I will send it back to get refurbished. Several times I have run 400-500 rounds through it in one day.
I must admit - The main reason I keep shooting my Hi-Point is because of how much others hate it. Shooting better than some of the gun-snobs I know is SO satisfying!! Buying this cheap Hi-Point helped me to get very interested in shooting and reloading. I even have an FFL now.

My first pistol was the 45 HP to, wish I still had it. It was one of the first off the line. Didnt keep it long. But this year bought a 40sw for 169.00 plus tax new. Made in America, for the avrege person to protect their family. It blows my mind about all the negative slack they receive. Plus lifetime warranty WOW. Just think if Americans would of pulled that stunt on H. FORD we wouldnt be driven today!
Paul, don't be so hard on HiPoint. It is an American company with the best warranty on the planet. No questions asked. The owner created HiPoint for one reason, for the poor folks to have a chance at self/home defense. It is not a range/hunting gun. Try their carbine, you'll love it.

thing about the carbine, i was told at Turners that the warranty only lasts as long as you dont disassemble the carbine yourself. i asked how would i clean it then, and the clerk said i would have to send it to Hi-point for maintenance and then have them send it back. idk if the guy was just pulling shit out of his ass, but ive never heard of a gun you buy that you cant disassemble yourself.

That clerk was bullshitting out his ass, I just looked up the Hi-Point warranty on their website, and it says nothing about voiding the warranty by doing maintenance, it says the opposite, it says it should be disassembled every 1500-2000 rounds.
I don't think the warranty on mine is valid as I got it for $125 at a gun show with a strange conversion kit that makes it look a bit like a Beretta Storm. It's fairly rusty. I've never bothered cleaning it, and it functions great, even with steel cased ammo. It's a very reliable weapon.
I'd call and ask before I assumed, they really like providing good service. It's one of their huge selling points.

I think a cow hide jacket could catch on in the UK. The hat was a bit jamiroquoi (not spelled correctly) circa 1990's but rocked nonetheless.
All the Hi-Point reviews I've seen done tend to conclude pretty much the same thing. It's a handgun that will function reasonably well... but... they're big, ugly, and field stripping can be a challenge as can finding a proper holster. Despite being a pistol that just plain WORKS, this isn't a handgun one would choose for conceal-carry but just the same, could be used for home protection or as a "knock around" handgun. Even with my limited budget I chose NOT to buy one, instead choosing a Glock 19. That was ten years ago and I absolutely love it.

Now that you mentioned it. My new (and very first) Smith and Wesson revolver came with moonclips I got the "Governer" and it will shoot the 410 shotshells, the 45 long colt and the 45ACP with the moonclips. "Downside" to the moonclips is that I need to find a "tool" to take the shells out of them. I haven't had it out for range time.

Paul speaks about the functionality of the .45 High Point, when I first bought one of these High Point .45s, Gander Mountain was first introducing them, and they were 100 bucks!
I thought, well .45 for 100 bucks? Its obviously a peice of junk, but what the hell. I bought a bunch of
.45 rounds and proceeded to put the gun through its paces with function and accuracy. At 0-25 yards it proved to be accurate enough for personal defense, of course could I trust it with my life as far as functioning when I needed it to?
Without cleaning it once, I sent over 1500 rounds through it over the next few months. It stove piped once. I cleared it, and continued to put another 500 or so rounds through it without one function issue.
Then I just decided after that I clean it. I still have it, and it still remains reliable every time I shoot it. But say what you want. Its all I could afford
I'm kind of the opposite.. my first purchase was a colt 1911.. still have it.. I have bought several other handguns and now I'm looking at the hi point c9 just because of curiosity.. the vast majority of reviews are good.. and I think they look kind of neat.. I know I'm in the minority there

A few years ago I bought a new H-P .45 from a pawn shop, $45, because the owner hates them.
I did what Paul suggested, took it apart and cleaned/lubed it, it wasn't dirty, being new, but it needed a lube.
That powder coat they use is sort of random and thick in spots and needed sanding or wear.
To that end I also worked the slide like 2,000 times over a month.
Then I got some ammo that I liked the reviews of and seemed like a reasonable round for me to carry in this weapon. Remington Golden Saber HPJ, GS45APB Hollow Point 230 grain. A good amount of it.
I went to my local range, got laughed at, but sighted it in so I felt confident with it.
I've had it for three years now and have put a few thousand rounds down lane.
Never had any issues after initial sighting. I do have much better guns, but I trust this one just as much.
Can't say I love anything about it except that trust.
Hi point specifically states not to clean the gun until you put at least 1500 rounds through it otherwise it causes premature wear it needs to be broken in dry

Sometimes its nice to have a gun you just don't care about. No worrying about properly cleaning it, no worries about scuffing the furniture, etc. I bought a Remington 870 clone from Centerfire systems a few years back. $119 shipped, plus it overlapped with a sitewide 10% off sale, and I had an additional 10% off coupon. Got it for under $100, no regrets.

I bought a Hi Point 45 acp. about 4 years ago. In that time I have had only one malfunction. Failure to feed and it was cheap ammo. I switched to Remington and have not had any problem. I bought because at the time I was short of funds and did not see that changing any time soon. No it is not a good carry gun. No it is not pretty. Yes it is heavy. Yes it is bulky. Yes it is made with cheap material. It does shoot though and I can shoot it as accurately as I can any other hand gun. It is prefect for what I use it for. It stays on the night stand at night and in the seat of the truck during the day . If stolen I am not out a lot of money. Would I rather have a Colt 1911? Sure but I would not carry it in my truck because of the investment I would have to make.

@subcomandante marcos I bought a Rock Island Armory 1911 about 10 years ago for 350 bucks. It's been my daily carry since I bought it. I have been extremely satisfied with it, worth every penny. Not picky about ammo either.

A couple of things. First, in the hipoint manual, it says to run a large number of rounds before breaking it down for complete cleaning. Just run a snake through it and a dab of oil after shooting. You can actually send it to Hipoint and they will break it down, clean it and send it back if you like. Secondly, it's a gun you can buy new for less than $200 out the door. It performs exactly as designed and adverised, goes bang for cheap.
I have the Hi Point .45 and I love it. It is not a daily carry, but is a home defense gun. Out of the box I had great groups at 15 yards. I haven't had any issues with reliability and have had no FTF of FTE. And I like the way it looks. All that said, I think that this was an excellent video. Love the channel and the reviews.
I too have the .45. I shoot it all the time. People at the range talk shit when I take it out, but slink away when they see my target.

Another outstanding video. Again you showed your professionalism by not doing what many others on you tube have done. down graded the gun and anyone that happens to own one. Not everyone can financially justify five hundred to one thousand dollars on a single firearm. what are they to do? do without? i agree if you can afford a better firearm by all means do so. if not this gun would beat an empty hand. i have seen this very gun for sale in my hometown for as little as $159.00 dollars. not much more than an average .22 rifle. i used to work for a large gun retailer here in OKC. my manager would berate me for not always pushing SMITH AND WESSON, COLT, BERRETA ALL OF THE TOP LINE MODELS. Well i found not everyone wanted or could afford those pricy guns. so a lot of my sales were TAURUS, CHARTER ARMS ROCK ISLAND, guns of that genre. although i did my share of the top line firearms. He also did a video where he took several .45 Hi-Points, filled the barrels solid with things like sealing foam, Line-X, and even concrete, and fired the guns. Each gun (even the concrete) cleared the obstruction from the barrel without blowing up. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t like Hi-Points, but that was impressive.

Right around 500 rounds through mine, with no stoppages. My friend with a 1911, about half the rounds through his with 3 bad stoppages. The look on his face while I was able to keep on shooting...priceless.
Add $100 for a holster, costs of extra mags, and costs of lost small parts... No thanks. I'll take any other major gun maker like Glock, Sig, CZ, etc. for a trivial extra up front expense but far better product, with easier carry-ability, take down and cleaning, better trigger, etc. Over time that extra money is a few pennies per day.
That is without a doubt the most honest and fair review of a Hi Point not because of the firearms used to compare but the fairness given to it in comparison and shooting by him. Always great work and very good presentation.
Hi Paul I've been a subscriber of yours for some time. I really enjoy your content. I just watched your Hi point video. I like what you had to say. However I have owned a few hi points over the years. 1 I purchased for 60 dollars. The one thing you didn't mention about hi point is the service you get from hi point firearms. They are phenomenal. I ordered several replacement springs, and even a firing pin. All of this for a used weapon. I didn't even have to pay shipping. They friendly and very helpful. Also they have a lifetime guarantee even on a second hand firearm. And they stand behind it. I think with proper training you can be very well defended by a hi point. Anyway I really enjoy your videos please keep up the good work.

The Hi Point is not a handgun I'd consider. It's a huge pistol, alleged to having a long and rough trigger pull. For personal protection, I want a better trigger pull.
I've got neighbors, and I don't like the idea of a .45ACP as a bedside weapon, because that heavy bullet has enough power to penetrate walls. I want less muzzle flash
because I intend to shoot more than once. But, I am sympathetic towards shooters who have to stay within budget, like married folks. For home defense, it might be
more suitable to buy a used handgun of better design and quality, rather than a cheaply made new handgun.

Haters can be... what you want me to be. I have had a C8 for nearly 20 years. It is a heavy ass brick, but it has NEVER FAILED! I have S&W's, Rugers, Sig's and colts. All of those pistols in calibers from 22LR to .45ACP are fine pieces of hand held artillery, but each has failed a time or two. That damned brick C8 that bounces around in my glove box NEVER HAS FAILED TO SHOOT!

Paul , good video. I do own a Hi Point JHP 45 and like it a lot. I have shot several thousand rounds thru it and except for some really hot handloads I have had zero malfunctions. Also I did do some modifications to the sear / striker to lower the trigger pull and accuracy wise... From a table that I can rest my arms on I can hit a 12 oz can at 50 yards more than 50 % of the time. I paid $ 150 for mine new, do not need to disassemble it really ever and yea it's ugly but this thing is as reliable as a chisel. To me it's a great gun and I can afford and do own many " better " pistols, I will not tell anyone it's junk, you didn't either but some just hate them because they are cheap.

Anybody thinking about getting a HiPoint pistol really needs to look at the S&W SD9VE or SD40VE. It's a complete redo of the old Sigma. Better trigger, real rails, etc. And depending on the sales, can be had well under $300. And it comes with 2 16 round magazines. It's essentially an extremely competent Glock clone at a fraction of the price. If you still hate the "defense trigger" it can be upgraded for $50 or under.
Easy to take apart, well made, reliable as an anvil, nice ergonomics and accurate. And not ugly as hell. All for under $100 more than the Hi Point
Doug Elick those really are a good gun for the price range. I hate their triggers but the grip is comfortable and I really like how easy the slide is to rack. They are just a knock off glock that isn't black.
The stock SD9VE trigger is somewhat long and a little creepy until it has been worked a while. But Apex has both spring and trigger kits as does Galloway Precision (spring only). To my knowledge, Apex's spring kit lowers the pull weight and the trigger reduces travel. It also changes it to a Glock style trigger safety. I went the later (Galloway) route which preserves the stock trigger assy. but lightens and "de-creeps" the pull just enough to make it downright decent. But it's harder to install than the Apex kit. I asked for the kit / install as a B-day gift (they insist on celebrating) - my Dad who's been into firearms for 50 years or so wasn't so pleased with the fiddly nature of disassembling the lower. They do have a howto video of the process.
Conversely, this man who has quite a collection, including a Glock with a butter smooth trigger job, picked up an SD9VE to knock about after handling mine. That's how I learned about Galloway - he had their kit installed on on his; I had the opportunity to handle my stock and his upgraded SD side by side. A few spring swaps transforms the SD9VE into what it should have been from the factory. Though perhaps it would have been *too* good at the price point.
To anyone reading this, after playing with a few different lubes for this pistol, I've settled on Tetra grease. The action is by far the smoothest with a restrained amount on the friction points and it never seems to dry out like oils. Your mileage may vary, of course...
I have one sd9ve and I’d like to have five more to place around the house. They are fantastic guns for the price, work just as good as my $1400 1911(in that they both hit their target). Although my 1911 is better looking, no one cares how it looks when it’s needed for protection.
See 'em at my local gun shops all the time. They're a little more pricey in my area, between 3-400 bucks new. Handsome looking gun.
My Dad purchased the SD9VE for home defense after I suggested it to him, he was looking for a low cost pistol in 9mm for defense. It works flawlessly right out of the box. Trigger isn't the best, but for the money is tough to beat, plus they look better than a High Point. I would find it hard to go with a High Point, due to all the low points:)
I bought a Hi point 45, I actually like these guns, I have always liked large pistols "hand cannons" you could say. I have a lot of old antique guns that are a bit more complex to take apart and clean than more modern ones. For me I still love them though. And like you said, a 45 tends to get the job done regardless of the gun it came from. I like your way of speaking BTW 👍
I have been using revolvers since the early 1970s.
Back in the early 1990s, my uncle introduced me to the 45 semi-automatic by gifting me a Hi-Point 45 model JH (not the newer model JHP). I have used it for decades, have never disassembled it for cleaning, and have never had problems with it. It is a great gun.
I fell in love with 45acp ammunition and the 45 Hi-Point semi-automatic so much that I decided to purchase a second 45.
The cost of my second 45, a new 45acp Heckler and Koch USP Elite, was about $1300. The cost of a new High-Point was about $200.
Since the Hi-Point and the HK are both well-built, accurate, and reliable, the lower priced Hi-Point is more cost effective than the higher priced HK.
The HK has a 6-inch barrel length. The Hi-Point has a 4.5 inch barrel length. I prefer the longer barrel.
The HK slide is made of a magnetic steel metal. My magnetic pistol mount does not work on my Hi-Point because the Hi-Point slide is made of a non-magnetic zinc alloy metal.
The HK uses 12-shot magazines. My Hi-Point uses 7-shot magazines. I prefer the higher ammo capacity of the HK.
My HK has an adjustable rear sight. Newer Hi-Points have an adjustable rear sight but my older Hi-Point only has a fixed rear sight. I prefer an adjustable rear sight.
My HK has a hammer firing pin. My Hi-Point has a striker firing pin. I prefer hammer firing pins.

@@natecole3222 sounds like, unlike most of us, you spent the money up front and bought the right one instead of buying every cheap holster you saw.
@@brain151 when your parents pretend to be democrats, one has plenty of time to do research. I was second guessing myself to make sure I was making the right choices. Doing things as right as possible so as to avoid as much backlash as I could.
I held each of the guns in my hand at the store and when I first held my glock 26 is felt like a handshake with God.
This video is a great example of why this is the best gun channel on YT. Paul is a no BS person and even though I've watched this one before, I STILL learned something. There was a time when all I could afford was a Hi-Point 9mm. I've watched this channel ever since and I have now graduated to much better models. Through it all, I have learved very valuable ways to think about shooting because of this channel. Other channels tell "what" to think, not "how" to think.
This will be the year I stary supporting it financially as well. Thanks, Pau.l You bring a lot to the firearms community.
