  • @Tsototar

When I was in the army, during basic training, for one of the training lessons (it's not just all running around doing pushups and getting yelled at), they held a demonstration where we watched the training sergeants shoot (with M16s) at various types of cover - basically to get us to "un-learn" a lot of things we'd picked up from TV and movies.
Basically, tree trunks (above a certain size) are the BEST cover, better even than concrete or brick walls, and far better than car doors.
Concrete and brick can stop bullets but immediately fracture and crack, and sustained fire will break it apart completely. You can take cover behind it but you can't stay there long.
A good sized tree will stop rifle fire almost indefinitely (well, for far longer than a concrete wall can anyway) - they shot at it continuously with wood chips flying everywhere but later when we all trooped up close to the tree trunk, we could see that the bullets didn't penetrate through it.
Car doors are worthless as protection.
Of course, as an infantryman, what you've really got to worry about is enemy artillery...

Having been in the Army Airborne, we were always taught to be in the prone reasons, 1 tree is wider at the base, 2 roots and dirt add cover, 3 reduce you as a target from enemy fire, 4 steady hold in the prone better for longer ranges and accuracy.

All Right, another Paul Harrell episode. The 5.56 goes through too, but the 7.62 will tear it up. Mostly dead, LOL. I used to do a gun safety class for my son's Boy Scout troop and one of my props was a 2x4 with .22 LR holes in it to show just what a "little" bullet could do, the 4x4 with a .357 hole made an impression on the kids as well. I must of taught a good class because the parents in attendance (including Moms) approved. Number one rule was if you find a gun, go get a grownup.

At least by then your vitals should be safe. Bad cover is always better than no cover. And it's not like a kevlar vest covers you from top to toe, it only covers your vital organs from the front, a tree can temporarily serve the same purpose.
But of course if you can find better cover than trees go for it, but that would be difficult to find since trees can be better cover than even concrete or brick, if you can find a wide enough tree.

    • @NickFrom1228
      @NickFrom1228 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Josh benware I have to agree 5.56 will penetrate but as always there are variables. A 5.56 with frangible bullets for instance would not but practically any FMJ or 855 would. Then it depends on what the bullets hit. If its a brick wall they all stop for the most part but we typically talk drywall in which case few bullets stop for drywall, even if hitting the 2X4 straight on. Just so damn many ifs involved.

I would imagine that denser wood with tighter grain would stop a bullet better. D-Fir is actually quite dense (for a softwood). . Cedar would probably do little to nothing, whereas deciduous trees like maple and especially oak will stop a projectile much better. It's why old timey wood battleships were made up of particular woods. Old iron sides was apparently made of a special sub-species of oak that allowed it to soak up heavy cannon fire from English frigates.
It is certainly something to consider if you ever find yourself hiding behind trees from bullets.

I'd take 1 Paul Harrell over 1,000 trees any day .

You obviously do not live in Eastern, Oregon. We do not have a lot of tree huggers, but anything bigger than sagebrush, tumbleweeds, or sheep grass is a plus. That is why they imported black locust and russian olives. It is hard to get trees to grow below the 1000 foot level. When I was a kid they bailed tumbleweeds to make windbreaks. When the wind hit 80, your house filled with sand. NOW, all of what was sand and sage is now irrigated with crop rotations.

I like how he explains that using a tree skinnier than your body for cover won't necessary stop all bullets from hitting you. Very informative, I'll keep that in mind!

So it's safe to say just about any tree big enough for cover can keep you safe from just about any small arms fire. (Unless that's a .50BMG or .338 Lapua).

My circumference is greater than that of most trees in my area. I am working on it though by finding bigger trees. 😜

The smartest idea is not to think of trees as cover,... period! Rounds that may be stopped by a live tree, may go through dead wood. Go to ground at the base of a tree, and use the ground for cover and tree for concealment. Clearing a friends building lot. The trees were being milled to provide the lumber for the house to be built the following year. Three red pines, that looked as good as their neighbours, at ground level. But only the outer rings were still alive, there was a gap in the center. Doubt they would've stopped the 9mm.

PeteyBoy yup, and as Paul said different species do different things. We have Jack Pine where I shoot, (my property and yes I do shoot trees that AREN’T scheduled for removal, they are mine). I’ve sent slugs through 8” of them although there are certainly other factors as well.

I think a good rule of thumb is don't take cover behind a dead trunk or a trunk that isn't wider than you. Also note; Fir wood is relatively strong, but most non-conifers which grow with solid trunks tend to be tougher, so if you already aren't looking to get behind a thin / flimsy tree, you won't regret when it get sawed in half by incoming fire.

Yup, but if you are being shot at by a determined attacker a tree to hide behind is an immovable object that will mark your tomb. Much like automobiles, we were taught in the army that they were death traps. Run, run, run alway frik’n run. Get fit far and stop being a fatty if you are fighting determined enemies, otherwise his behind a candy bar display since the vast majority of civilians won’t shot through anything thicker then tin foil. (I’ll stick to running and bleeding versus staying and bleeding.)

I've shot through enough trees, live and dead, with everything from .223 cal through .30-06, to know staying upright behind one, swings the odds in the opponents favour. Also note I said, use trees for CONCEALMENT, but use ground for COVER. Learn the difference, and also realize each tactical situation will have it's own way to handled.

I'm ex military as well. And like yourself I was an expert marksmen, and I really love and appreciate your content. You've got that same no nonsense sort of dry humor that I became accustom to in the Army. That 556 green tip ammo, I actually remember loading those into my M16 back then, of course at the time I didn't know that's what they were, all I knew or cared about is that they fired out of my weapon and that I could hit a man center mass at 300+ yards using iron sights with them 40 out of 40 times. Lol. Keep the great videos coming.
