    This rope has nothing to do with sports climbing and is for a totally different kind of climbing: industrial climbing, tree climbing, rescue climbing.
    Static / half-static ropes are used for climbing techniques where you never ever take a significant fall but you want to ascend the rope with ease using various kinds of techniques and devices. With industrial climbing one usually uses fully redundant setups: two ropes, two anchors, two descenders etc. and a setup that makes rescuing possible/easy. One often uses steel carabiners because they can take a lot more static load than aluminium ones and weight is not so much an isue, one often uses ropes with pre-sewn or spliced loops because those can take a lot more load than loops made with knots.
    Static/half-static ropes are made deliberately without any drill in the smaller lines inside because that drill is part of what makes a rope dynamic.
    However one uses 10 to 13 mm static ropes usually.

    • @BetaClimbers
      @BetaClimbers  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Right on 🤙🏻 I can’t believe they advertise it as a sport climbing rope. I often use static rope for rock climbing when top rope soloing or hauling.

I use my snowboarding helmet for the belayer and the climbing helmet for the climber (no bueno to climb in snowboarding helmet.... sweaty head). Well sure enough, I was getting lowered off a route and knocked some rock loose with my foot, and a nice fist size rock dropped 50 feet and hit my belayer right in the center of the helmet.... needless to day he bought a helmet the next day.

    @isaack6994 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    I love the content man, it's very entertaining, and I think you've done a great deed by debunking this rope, especially treating it like a disease! But it seems like you don't know much about the construction of ropes, fair enough though, most climbers don't. The core strands look different because they have different capabilities, a dynamic rope will be much more "twisted" to achieve stretch, while a static rope's core strands should be straighter. Think of a slinky vs straight wire. The colored strand is to date the rope, no wonder the crappy rope doesn't have one. The rope got stiff after a single rappel due to a) the strands got packed together while loaded and created a stiffness as they're more densely packed and b) it's a really crappy rope. You should notice a slight bit of "stiffening" in your rope shortly after it's been loaded, but nowhere near as much as the video you showed. Sewn or spliced eyes are usually indicative of a tree climbing rope or other commercial use ropes, though I imagine this rope was advertised as a "climbing rope" with no specification as to what type of climbing. Personally, I wouldn't even trust this rope as a leash for my dog lol maybe a decorative piece for my home, but I wouldn't want trash lying around so also no lol... Anywho, great video, keep it up and keep learning! Most importantly, climb on!

    Buyer beware for sure. I have 4 climbing lines. Samson & Sterling. 3 strand & non-twisting rigging lines of different diameters. Bought from an Arborist shop. That orange line would be good anchor line. Not for a tree, but a boat. I'm not an Arborist but I have a farm & a job & to keep insurance companies happy I needed to buy thousand of dollars of gear. It's very good gear. It gives me the ability to tackle jobs when I have the time. This is diverse property that u couldn't use a truck with a boom on it. 25 yrs. ago it was so thick that u couldn't see 20 feet in front of you when standing on the ground. Alot of fence up & that means maintenance has to be done when needed. I've taken the skills that were safety driven from work & applied it to my tree work. Everything I do takes some time, but it's done right. I have many stems that have been left for later. I'm almost to the point after a couple of more trees are disposed of to take down these stems. I've been able to take off the tops of some of these dead stems with a Maasdam rope puller so I wouldn't damage any fencing. I left paracord up in these stems so I wouldn't have to climb these stems anymore. Just need to run the rigging line to the top & back down to the Maasdam on the ground to give the whole system more redundancy. My motto is 'measure 5 times, cut once the right way.' After all, you only get one chance.😮

One thing I'd love to see that I havent seen on YT is an actual stress/failure test of these crap ropes, sort of like how people have done failure tests for no-name biners. Might be hard to replicate the UIAA fall standards, but maybe having it catch a falling sandbag on a factor 2 fall or seeing how easy it is to sever a line with a static load on it would be cool illustrations. As others have mentioned, you're comparing a static line (even though its advertised as "climbing rope") to a dynamic line, so they'll be different anyways.

    Force = mass x acceleration
    So using a dynamic line litteraly reduces the force on you and on the whole system because it reduces the acceleration (or the distance/time you travel)
    So not the same force :)

    • @ekbp3zpe760
      @ekbp3zpe760 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The force is the same (your mass x gravitational constant). It's the impulse (force x time) he's talking about. the dynamic line increases time to stop, reducing the overall jerky effect on your body. The force is the same in both instances

I had two bodies (110kg + 65kg) "bouncing" in the hammock with rope being almost horizontal and it took it well. Climbing ropes are nylon6.6 that's heat treated for increased (engineering terms) strength, toughness, elongation at break, and/or ultimate strength based on the specifics of the treatment, whereas the other rope is probably a nylon6 which is very similar, but cheaper and reduced mechanical properties.
    There are few online papers specifically regarding yield strengths for nylons, but wet it can lose between 20% and 50% of it's yield strength. Drying a nylon rope should take place over a period of 48hrs in a low RH environment for my recommendation for reduction in harm to the rope from moisture uptake. 24 for balancing moisture content and 24 for the moisture creep from core to sheath

    Hello.
    The inside of your old rope might have been treated specialy, in order to prevent the core from sliding inside. This might be what the fine webbing on the outer core was? The outer core could feel a little bit sticky, as far as I know. Also the light red color of the core should indicate that the robe is "dry" treated, if I am not mistaken?
    Of those cheap robes on Amazon I saw quite many the last days, because - you guessed it ;-) - I was seaching for a more "static" robe.
    This kind of videos are importend to prevent somebody to get into a really bad situation...
    Be save :-)

    I don't get how someone will want to put his life on a Amazon rope...
    By the way the colored strands are a manufacturer code, like the year for example. Some brand also put a transparent plastic strand with infos on it like manufacturer name, model, diameter and norms wich give you the strength of your rope. But after a few years it's not really readable anymore. Good video, thanks for your sacrifice 🤙

    Dynamic line "spreads that force out over time" lol .
    Here's an idea, don't cut your line . I was broke and needed a rope.
    I used one for about 8 months , the exact line . I found the pros to be cheap , strong as fuck , I tested the shit out of it. It's rated 3000lbs I weigh 150 lbs , I liked the diameter, it follows you through a tree greatly. I have been climbing trees 17 years . I placed 4th in the southern chapter Isa climbing competition in 08 or 07 I can't recall exactly which it was Knoxville Tennessee,. Trust that the rope will do , clearly you have to be vigilant. I upgraded my climbing line once I got my funds up , but the rope is strong. Test before use . After I retired it from climbing, I used as rigging line on small and medium limbs and , I tried to break it for the hell of it. It was very difficult but I finally did after over a year of use . Just saying. Yeah it's cheap but in a pinch , throw on a prusik and micro pulley and don't be an idiot.

    The thing is if I didnt read the description thoroughly (they warn its not for climbing at the very end or in smaller font) and just glanced at it and weren't interested in the physics behind climbing or inform myself on safety standard I would have just bought everything from amazon. My logic was how hard could it be to manufacture aluminium and nylon that I couldnt trust chinese products with it and what do asians use for climbing tools, it can't be only european and american brands that make quality stuff. I'll only use the carabiner to carry stuff around and never to anchor myself to them, the sling can be usefull in many way, but yeah I decided to buy all my stuff from climbing store and certified gear only because everything on amazon seems too sketchy. Most of their products in their climbing section have warning to not use them for climbing especially their top sellers, its absurd

    i use the home depot cheap rope for my moms roof and tie off to a tree there was ok cause only need about 10 pounds pull if i slip little bit- but now in my house with more of a slant with new roof very slippery so now got the belt and the rope grabber so in my room been playing with the rope grabber- and it works on cheap rope but also stresses it -if you going use a rope grabber get a better rope- cause using grabber i wouldn't recommend using that cheap rope more than 2-3 times - but with a lot roofs it depends on how much your weight going be on the rope- but ya if your actually climbing you need all the rope u can get- how many movies show the rope breaking in climbing-

    leading ropes need to have EN892 . static lines are EN1891. and after 9 years the rope don't lose 90% of it strength' its not true, after time the rope qualities will change in ways that will be less safe.

    Its the same reason cars now have crumple zones. If you can extend the time it takes to bring a car (or climber) to a stop, it will take a smaller peak force to do so.
