I have been looking for months how to do this im rubbish at maths ect and could never find a video to help me, I love how you show every last detail absolutely class I love it and you repeat taking the time to show it all, ❤️
Cheers lads. Going to attempt mine next week after getting quotes of 600 odd quid. You guys have given me confidence to have a crack myself so thank you 😊
I would say that I am an intermediate DIYer,and I have watched so many videos on paneling my stairs. Yours is the first that is explained in a clear and logical way. This video made it so easy to follow and duplicate. Thank you so much for all your help!
Best video I've seen on this, well done both! Couple of questions, is there an alternative to a nail gun, is it possible to hammer in pins or will this risk damaging the MDF? Also, if there is more than one length needed for going up the stairs, is it ok to butt together and plane each edge, or best to mitre? Thanks!
Fingers crossed you see this!! I’m struggling getting started on my stairs panelling - I don’t think it’s possible to join the stairs to the hallway. HEEEELLLLPPP MEEE
Excellent video mate. Two questions for you if you have time to respond. 1) Why the first vertical board has some distance from the corner (also many cm should that distance be?) but the vertical board upstairs is right up to the corner? 2) Can I screw the boards to the wall instead of using a nail gun? Many thanks in advance
so quick question, i see all these panelling vids on these narrow staircases but never the final product. Where does the hand rail go? Surely if you placed it above those panels it would sit too high?
Hi guys. Love your work! I have a question for you, was this being Brad nailed into a solid brick/plastered wall? I’m a bit worried that the nails won’t go all the way through on our old 80’s house?
With the top rail, did you have to join two pieces together? If so, did you just butt join them or did you mitre join them? If you didn't, but would have to, what would you do?
Hi Lads, thanks for the video it's a great help. Can I ask, most of the panelling strips come in a 2.4m length . Stairs would need a longer length. Do you bevel the edge if you butt too lengths together or mitre the joints?
Great video lads. Just one question. How do you work the equal spaces when you have the incline up the stairs and then a straight section at the top and bottom of the stairs?
@@homeimprovements I know to get equal measurements from the bottom to the top of the stairs you have to take into account the slope when calculating the width of the actual uprights, so say 10cm becomes 12 etc. So you can just do the calculation to get equal length panels. But what about the straight sections at the top of the stairs (landing) and bottom of stairs hallway, how do you add them into the calculation, so they all end up equal and you end up with an upright at the very end of the landing. Sorry hard to explain, could explain in 2 secs chatting but writing it is a different ball game 😂 thanks anyway👍
What filler should you use to fill inbetween panels? Should you fill the pin holes also? Then caulk the wood ins and outs before painting? Just about to do this in my new house and scared!
Great video I have a staircase which is not great. Skirting board at the bottoms and the top. How do I make the bottom panel the same height. Meaning when I reach the top stair, the skirting is going to make the bottom panel higher! Advice on how to match up please.
When your marking out stairs what happens when skirting is higher than your stringer trying to mark out to do dado rail and panelling so obviously I'd I was to mark rest off hall it would be higher if going from top off skirting so do I need to take a measurement away .please explain .
What did you do at the bottom after the riser terminates at the skirting board? Did you remove the skirting board and put a full panel that comes up 100mm after the skirting is put back on top? Hope that makes sense. I have Ogee skirting and the top is thinner than the panel so I can't start the panel on top of the skirting.
What you bezel the edge with the small plane, you mention filling it, what would you recomend its filled with, decorating chark or wood filler. iv found decorating chalk shrinks back everty few years when i used on on skirting boards, or will the paint stop this happening
Great video! I have a quick question so my top stringer is still at an angle and not in line with my top skirting board so not sure the measurement will be the same between my top and bottom stringer. Any advice? Hope this makes sense! Thanks
I can’t find 9mm or even 1/4 inch Mdf anywhere. Lowes and Home Depot don’t carry it. I don’t wanna go 1/2 inch because it will most likely be thicker than my baseboard. Any advise?
This is the best video tutorial I’ve seen so far. Look forward to starting my own as a complete DIY novice. Thanks for the advice. Could you do a video on how to apply the filler too? 🤣🤣
Don’t be sorry this is a diy channel the paneling was made simple for diy 👍🏼 could mitred pocket holes etc but that’s moving away from our aim to help people do diy
I know you guys will probably miss this notification, but.. you're the best. This is the first TH-cam tutorial I've ever followed due to the fact you explain it so well and basic to people like me with no carpentry experience. I never had a farther figure to learn stuff like this off so thank you so much, guys. Your videos are helping people like me prosper.
Sweet! Wanting to start mine now. Only issue I've got is the stringer isn't even depth all the way up - think the wall was plastered by a drunk bloke.... How can I overcome that? Do I need different thicknesses of wood for the panelling? Also, no pin gun.... Is a hammer and pins like you'd use for skirting and architrave okay?
I've hit a massive problem with paneling it's huge to me because of the layout of my landing I don't know what's best to do for it. Please someone help me. =(
Wish I would’ve found you guys before I made my wall look like the chalkboard of a crazed mathematician…. Lol My sanity has been restored! Beauty AND Brains! 😉 You guys are definitely the whole package! THANK YOU, all the way from Texas!
I wish I'd have found you guys years ago. I just put up picture moulding and chair rail up my stairs using another one of your videos (the one that shows the math) and I cannot tell you how much it helped me. I'm a forever fan now, you guys are wonderful.
To help visualise it a tip from junior school arithmetic lessons (in the 60's, I'm now happily retired ;) , we were taught to visualise it as 'Lamppost's and Spaces' 4 lamppost's 3 spaces and so on, I've used it all my life as an electrician to get even space spaces on cable tray, ladder rack trunking and conduit
I loved this video and it even convinced my husband that we CAN panel our hallway/stairs. I was feeling super confident...until it dawned on me that we have a winder staircase and will need some extra help re angles/spacing. Please send help soon lads 🙏

Great video lads. Just one question. How do you work the equal spaces when you have the incline up the stairs and then a straight section at the top and bottom of the stairs?
Do you just measure the straight parts at the top and bottom hallway and landing and add that to the incline figure?
Not sure what your asking tbh mate 🤔

If you chalk line the stairs then the bottom and top until the line intersect you can keep the same height on both 😊
How would you do the first panel if theres a radiator pipe and window sill in the way x
When your marking out stairs what happens when skirting is higher than your stringer trying to mark out to do dado rail and panelling so obviously I'd I was to mark rest off hall it would be higher if going from top off skirting so do I need to take a measurement away .please explain .
Great video lads....how do you deal with a curve at the bottom of a staircase wall? And where can I get that paneling from??
This is just 9mm mdf we had cut into 100mm strips 😊
Hi. Does it matter if the skirting isn't level with the stringers at the bottom of the stairs? Thanks for the vid 🤘
No if you chalk it out as we did you’ll just ignore that 😊
Nice vid lads. Nicely broken down DAVE😂
🤣👌🏼👌🏼
So you divide the total thickness of the styles on the top and bottom whatever that measurement is you divided by the number of spacing that you want
Thank you
🤗
great video a question at the begging of the video have you added some pine timber to the side of the stairs to give extra room for the 9mm mdf
We sure did good spot also because it was in bad shape 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
Is the top and bottom same measurements?
What did you do at the bottom after the riser terminates at the skirting board? Did you remove the skirting board and put a full panel that comes up 100mm after the skirting is put back on top? This finished at the stairs but yes you can remove skirts install panel 100 taller than skirting then reinstall skirting 😊

Thanks for your comment. We recommend Ronseal 2 part wood filler 🙌✊🏽
What is the spec of your MDF?
9mm mdf cut into 100mm strips

Not sure sorry as we are uk 😞😞 ply could work if that’s available over there 🤔
What wood are you using? Is it just a mdf sheet or something else?
Yes just mdf sheet ripped down into 100mm strips 😊👍🏼
Who cut these for you?
What would you do if the stairs don’t return flat at the bottom like yours. And the skirting around the corner is lower 🙈
Few options step the panel to match is probably the easiest 😁😁
Too much music otherwise the demonstration is excellent.😊
Thank you for sharing 👍🏻

Neat

What paint works best on the mdf strips? Satin?
Once primed we have had decent luck with washable Matt emulsion 😁😁

Valspa gold range 🙌🙌
