HOW TO INSTALL WALL PANELLING TO STAIRS / HOW TO INSTALL BOARD AND BATTEN TO A STAIRCASE / INSTALLING WAINSCOTING ON YOUR STAIRS
In this video we are installing wall panelling/ board and batten / wainscoting to our staircase.
This is an easy step by step guide for all DIYers.
All staircases are different and we will show you how to calculate the spacing for any number of panels / size of staircase. As well as how to measure and mark out for your wall panelling / wainscoting.
We recommend using 9mm MDF wood cut down to 100mm widths.
Bevel the edges of your wood on your panelling for a seamless finish once decorated.
We will demonstrate how to easily calculate the angles required for you panelling and how to fix it to the wall.
Renovate your staircase and hallways with wall panelling/ board and batten / wainscoting!

Do you have a video covering, wainscoting a staircase ( decorative mouldings) 👍
@@pww9962 will be doing one very soon 😁😁👍🏼👍🏼
Any recommends on good filler your using or any? And what grit sandpaper you using would you say? @homeimprovements
What would you do with a pronounced slope on a stringer where the stairs turn 90°?
What chalk line do you use please ? The link is broken
I would say that I am an intermediate DIYer,and I have watched so many videos on paneling my stairs. Yours is the first that is explained in a clear and logical way. This video made it so easy to follow and duplicate. Thank you so much for all your help!
We followed your instructions step by step and our panelling looks awesome. Thank you.😊
That’s awesome 😁👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
so so helpful thank you !
Glad it was helpful! 😁😁
I thank you Gents.
To help visualise it a tip from junior school arithmetic lessons (in the 60's, I'm now happily retired ;) , we were taught to visualise it as 'Lamppost's and Spaces' 4 lamppost's 3 spaces and so on, I've used it all my life as an electrician to get even space spaces on cable tray, ladder rack trunking and conduit
Brilliant! I'm confident I can do it now. Thanks for the tips. Far too many people over complicate the way to do it.
Appreciate the comment 😊🤗
Brilliant guys, well done. Cheers
I wish I'd have found you guys years ago. I just put up picture moulding and chair rail up my stairs using another one of your videos (the one that shows the math) and I cannot tell you how much it helped me. I'm a forever fan now, you guys are wonderful.
That is awesome! Thanks for the comment 😊😊😊
Top job lads well explained
I have been looking for months how to do this im rubbish at maths ect and could never find a video to help me, I love how you show every last detail absolutely class I love it and you repeat taking the time to show it all, ❤️

I know you guys will probably miss this notification, but.. you're the best. This is the first TH-cam tutorial I've ever followed due to the fact you explain it so well and basic to people like me with no carpentry experience. I never had a farther figure to learn stuff like this off so thank you so much, guys. Your videos are helping people like me prosper.
Thank you for your support, comments like these make our day 😊

Thank you! Cheers!
Cheers lads. Going to attempt mine next week after getting quotes of 600 odd quid. You guys have given me confidence to have a crack myself so thank you 😊
Best of luck! 😁😁😁
I tried to do this a couple of weeks ago at my daughters house. Hit a problem and I've been scratching my head ever since. Finally got to looking on you tube and now armed with a head full of cockney knowledge I'm gonna go and finish it today. Cheers lads 👍
Legend thanks mate 😊💪🏼
@@homeimprovements update. Absolutely looks the dogs mate. Daughter loves it. Wish I could show you a pic. I'm knackered now. Time for a beer 🍺👍. Cheers lads
Best video I've seen on this, well done both! Couple of questions, is there an alternative to a nail gun, is it possible to hammer in pins or will this risk damaging the MDF? Also, if there is more than one length needed for going up the stairs, is it ok to butt together and plane each edge, or best to mitre? Thanks!
I use a protractor after marking out to find the acute/obtuse angles.
Top work explained really well for us budding d.i.y ers
Thank you 😊
Great work lads. Was the wall lined with lining paper and then you glued the panelling directly on top
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
Great video, what product would you recommend for filling in the gaps you created with the mini plane ?
Hi Lads, thanks for the video it's a great help. Can I ask, most of the panelling strips come in a 2.4m length . Stairs would need a longer length. Do you bevel the edge if you butt too lengths together or mitre the joints?
Hello Phil, Dave 😂
I’m dry walking afterwards I’m doing this.
Excellent video mate. Two questions for you if you have time to respond. 1) Why the first vertical board has some distance from the corner (also many cm should that distance be?) but the vertical board upstairs is right up to the corner? 2) Can I screw the boards to the wall instead of using a nail gun? Many thanks in advance
What tools are needed? Chaulk line, handsaw, pencil, level
Always wondered what Beats and Grindah been doing since PJDN finished
Great video guys, super helpful with tips & tricks. Regarding the spacing, is it the same calculation if you have a longer hallway to continue the panels (rather than ending quite close to the bottom of the staircase like in the video)
Thanks mate and it’s all down to personal preference that’s why it’s always best to chalk it out 😁
Neat
Thanks
How would you do the first panel if theres a radiator pipe and window sill in the way x
With the top rail, did you have to join two pieces together? If so, did you just butt join them or did you mitre join them? If you didn't, but would have to, what would you do?
Thanks for the video. What would you use if you were fixing it to a block wall instead of a stud wall?
These are brick walls 😊💪🏼
Great video. Can you update the links for tools please some are broken. Thanks
Nice vid lads. Nicely broken down DAVE😂
🤣👌🏼👌🏼
great video a question at the begging of the video have you added some pine timber to the side of the stairs to give extra room for the 9mm mdf
We sure did good spot also because it was in bad shape 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
When your marking out stairs what happens when skirting is higher than your stringer trying to mark out to do dado rail and panelling so obviously I'd I was to mark rest off hall it would be higher if going from top off skirting so do I need to take a measurement away .please explain .
Great vid, kind of got distracted by you both though 😍😍🤭
😂😂🤗🤙🏼
Great video! I have a quick question so my top stringer is still at an angle and not in line with my top skirting board so not sure the measurement will be the same between my top and bottom stringer. Any advice? Hope this makes sense! Thanks
Not too sure what your trying to explain 🙈🙈🙈🙈
so quick question, i see all these panelling vids on these narrow staircases but never the final product. Where does the hand rail go? Surely if you placed it above those panels it would sit too high?
Top video, im gonna have a go, Can I ask where you get the chalk string lads
We got this from Amazon I have the link somewhere if you want it . 🙌🙌
How do i continue it from my stairs to hallway as the skirts are a lower level to the stringer so wont it look odd if i was to continue it?
Love the video im goina give it a go. Yous make it look so easy. What size nails do you yous use. Thanks
Thanks depends on wall and what tools you have 😁

Ryobi 16g nailer on a solid wall
You guys make it look so easy. How long did you have to train to be a carpenter/painter/carpet fitter? Do you have your own business? You really need to get yourselves on TV.
Thanks 😊😊 been doing trade works out whole life’s 😊
Great video lads....how do you deal with a curve at the bottom of a staircase wall? And where can I get that paneling from??
This is just 9mm mdf we had cut into 100mm strips 😊
Very well put together video lads. Just a question where did you get your MDF strips from ?
Full panels we had cut down in b&q or a local timber merchant 😁
@@homeimprovements Cheers boyz
What you bezel the edge with the small plane, you mention filling it, what would you recomend its filled with, decorating chark or wood filler. iv found decorating chalk shrinks back everty few years when i used on on skirting boards, or will the paint stop this happening
Thanks for your comment. We recommend Ronseal 2 part wood filler 🙌✊🏽
So you divide the total thickness of the styles on the top and bottom whatever that measurement is you divided by the number of spacing that you want
Really good instructional video. It was really well explained and I think even my novice skills will be able to follow this 🙂
Thanks we really appreciate taking the time out to comment this positive message. So for that mad respect 🫡 🔥
@@homeimprovements I can’t wait to have a go at this in the next few weeks
This is the best video tutorial I’ve seen so far. Look forward to starting my own as a complete DIY novice. Thanks for the advice. Could you do a video on how to apply the filler too? 🤣🤣
Yh sure 😁😁
Amazing. I’m so glad I found your video. Hope this isn’t a dumb q but what could you use instead of a chalk line or how do I make one? 😂
Thanks 😁 best bet is to buy one very cheap these days 😊
@@homeimprovements thanks so much. I never knew this existed 😅
Sweet! Wanting to start mine now. Only issue I've got is the stringer isn't even depth all the way up - think the wall was plastered by a drunk bloke.... How can I overcome that? Do I need different thicknesses of wood for the panelling?
Also, no pin gun.... Is a hammer and pins like you'd use for skirting and architrave okay?
Depends on what you want to do there’s a few options and yes adhesive and pins will work 😁👍🏼
Alrite boys great video 👏 what DeWalt pin gun you using and size pins?
Dcn 680 18 gauge in the video but recommend the dcn 660 16 gauge its better we didn’t have it on us that day 🙌🙌 Thanks for your comment
Cheers lads keep up the good work 👌you didn't mention size pins you used tho ? ha soz,ive got a job on soon and I've only got a bauker 18 gauge 🐕🦺💩defo need to upgrade nice 1 👍
I was going to give up on the idea of panelling until I watched this amazingly simple video, so thank you so much guys. I have a question. I'm keeping the original dado rail and skirting, so will be using 6mm mdf for panels. However when you get to bottom of stairs, where it straightens out, the ledge on the skirting board is much wider than the ledge going up the stairs. Old Victorian house and nothing is straight. What should I do with panels when I get to the bottom of stairs?
Not too sure what you explaining there sorry 🙈🙈
@@homeimprovements One of my panels will be placed horizontal.... above the skirting board. However at the bottom of the stairs, my skirting board has pulled away from the wall, creating a sort of ledge. Was just wondering how I would deal with this issue. Hope this makes sense....😅. If not, don't worry and thanks for replying.
Similiar thing I have a problem with. Skirting at the bottom this is fine. First bottom panel runs up the stairs. Now a small landinding with a skirting, hence the bottom panel will be higher and will not match or butt up help!
Great video I have a staircase which is not great. Skirting board at the bottoms and the top. How do I make the bottom panel the same height.
Meaning when I reach the top stair, the skirting is going to make the bottom panel higher!
Advice on how to match up please.
If you chalk line the stairs then the bottom and top until the line intersect you can keep the same height on both 😊
What did you do at the bottom after the riser terminates at the skirting board? Did you remove the skirting board and put a full panel that comes up 100mm after the skirting is put back on top? Hope that makes sense. I have Ogee skirting and the top is thinner than the panel so I can't start the panel on top of the skirting.
This finished at the stairs but yes you can remove skirts install panel 100 taller than skirting then reinstall skirting 😊
Hi. Does it matter if the skirting isn't level with the stringers at the bottom of the stairs? Thanks for the vid 🤘
No if you chalk it out as we did you’ll just ignore that 😊
Great video lads. Just one question. How do you work the equal spaces when you have the incline up the stairs and then a straight section at the top and bottom of the stairs?
Do you just measure the straight parts at the top and bottom hallway and landing and add that to the incline figure?
Not sure what your asking tbh mate 🤔
@@homeimprovements I know to get equal measurements from the bottom to the top of the stairs you have to take into account the slope when calculating the width of the actual uprights, so say 10cm becomes 12 etc. So you can just do the calculation to get equal length panels. But what about the straight sections at the top of the stairs (landing) and bottom of stairs hallway, how do you add them into the calculation, so they all end up equal and you end up with an upright at the very end of the landing. Sorry hard to explain, could explain in 2 secs chatting but writing it is a different ball game 😂 thanks anyway👍
Wanted to do this on our stairs and hallway for some time now but never had the confidence. After watching your video we have decided to give it a go. I have a Question though which is throwing me a little, you took the 1000mm measurement from the bottom first from the top of the skirting board, at the top of the stairs you took the 1000mm measurement from the top of the stringer (do i have that right?) Many thank's
That’s it 😊
Is the top and bottom same measurements?
What do you do if the stringer is curved with a winding staircase - do you just leave the bottom bit out and run them to the stringer? Thanks
Great question bro if you watch our how to install a dado rail it explains all 🙌🙌✌️
Excellent thanks chaps great little learner video
Thanks mate appreciate it 🔥🤙🏽
goto love a bit of terry tibbs lol family car ? talk to me
How would you shape the cut for a stringer that has a curve at the top of the stairs
You can Kurf the trim but will need a lot of filling and sanding 🤔 personally smaller curves I run straight 😊
Great video, just a quick question?! If you are continuing the panelling along the landing and around a corner, how would you calculate your gaps so they are even throughout? thanks :D
We don’t personally no we size them to suite the wall or space much nicer finish that way 😊👍🏼
What paint do you use on the pannels.. do you use 'normal' for walls and ceiling or it must be some special one?
Once primed if using unprimed normally emulsion for us 😊
@@homeimprovements thank you :)
I want to panel my hallway, landing, and stairs. Where would you start first?
Doesn’t matter imo every wall is a section on its own 😊
