One advantage of keeping the Cherokee on the Wagoneer's wheelbase is that adding a 4-door Cherokee proved to be plug-and-play and when that carried over into the XJ versions the four-door Cherokee was a (much-needed by AMC) segment-defining smash hit.
These prototypes prove that AMC was moving the Commando away from the Jeepster design queues and more towards the SJ lineup, although the first one shiws a slower process towards that transition. I didn't like the grille of the second one either, but I can see what they were trying to do with that. It was an attemp to break into the luxury SUV market, which at the time was dominated by Land Rover.
