I once had a teacher that said that the difference between a good and a great pianist could be summed up in one word:
Voicing.
If you voice your melody, and play it beautifully, that puts you above a lot of piano players.
However, in the process of trying to voice the melody (often in the right hand), a lot of piano players end up just trying to ‘play the accompaniment (or left hand) as quietly as possible,’ with little or no success.
When you tell your left hand to ‘play as quietly as possible,’ you’re not giving it clear directions that are actionable or measurable.
I’m sure you’ve experienced this phenomenon where you tell your left hand to be quiet, and all of a sudden ALL YOU CAN HEAR is the left hand?!
In today’s tutorial, I give you a solution to this problem.

Great lesson! Some of my favourite pianists are the ones who have a dominant accompanying hand. McCoy Tyner, who played piano with John Coltrane, comes to mind.
i noticed paul mccartney does his melody on his left hand and his chords on his right. pretty cool. i like things outside the box or folks who dont go by the book and make it work. i did that with drumming. i took no courses or classes, later i found i did things not normal.. but it gave me a way better aptitude for many things by not being taught. sometimes not knowing limitations can be greater than thinking it all has to be a certain way. those that disagree take it up with paul.

Great lesson! You're definitely "digging" deep for material that is relevant to all of us!!! I will say that when I looked @ the markings & dynamics on the piece, I see a slur & a pianissimo with an expressivo!!! Which tells me those particular dynamics were implied. It's just very easy to overlook them when we're trying to "master" a piece!!!🤔🤔🤔 Just my thoughts and again loved the lesson!!!🤘👏👍🙏
Thanks!! And yes yes yes! Sometimes I recommend ignoring the dynamics depending on the goal, artistic preference, if the dynamics were out there by the composer, etc. for the sake of this practice method you’d ignore them ;) then put them back.

As a right-handed player, I concentrate much more on the left hand when practicing. Through timing experiments, I discovered that my left hand is about fifteen percent less competent than the right hand, by almost every measure. So it makes sense to devote more practice time to it.
Hello and this is my 1st 15mins and I just subscribed, I just started playing later in life as I only had a few moments a piano was not accessible in most living situations , so this is a the 1st year I've had a digital piano / organ with weighted keys that lives at my residence now and finally all the hand and finger dexterity r mobility and physics seem to be flowing and blossoming and not as awkward as in my teens with more patience and time to dedicate my focus now .
I'm 57 and have been playing guitar and bass since I was 10 and with my acoustic next to my piano I've been transferring theory and it's recalling opening up my mind , I'm very obsessive with bass lines because as a bassist for hire I've adapted a hand in glove technique = the chord " mode is the glove and the hand/ fingers are the arpeggiaited key 1 3 and 5 notes that make up a scale series of notes a * fit* in the pockets of the chords itself , with this I'm sounding out diminish Aug and major 7th clusters , with this mind mind even opening up the white and nlacks keys almost caged withing a octave and 9 keys all in the convenient neighboring keys and I'm discovering that if I approach my left hand as bass lines I can invente my patterns that roll back around as a " loop ( hench BASS LINES AS MELODIES ! Nice content , Ashlee! I would also like to point out a method that has helped me in order to accentuate the melody regardless this is on the left or right hand. This is to sing (not loud) the melody while playing so as the brain will know and bring it up. This makes miracles especially on Bach's Fugues

I'm not clear on what this lesson is though I appreciate your energy and enthusiasm. Is it to simply play the left hand louder or with more dynamics depending what the piece calls for at any given note or phrase?
I’m glad you asked for clarification! It’s actually to take the LH or ANY piece and see if you can make it sound as beautiful as a melody. You won’t perform it this way, but as a practice technique it really makes your brain think at a deeper level and helps you get to know the piece better and develop a lot better control of the LH.

This is really good advice! Ashlee is obviously a human dynamo, who could easily sell sand to someone dying of thirst-but she always delivers great, usable content that will help people immensely as they strive to improve as musicians. She’s the real deal! I’m no great pianist, but I do muddle along well enough to make a living playing piano, and I ALWAYS find something of value in her videos.
