I have practiced scales for years, but never increased the speed significantly. I have tried different approaches, but no one really increased my speed, so my daily routine about scales ended up playing a major and a minor scale in octaves, tens, sixths and thirds - four times in four octaves. this exercise is 8 minutes for two scales. I saw this video, and for the last five weeks, I have practiced only one scale a day, and for about 15 minutes using these exercises. I practice a new scale every day using the circle of fifth, which means that it takes 24 days getting back to start. At my first round i increased my speed from 60 to 68 beats pr. minute, and on the second round I am increasing the speed to 76 beats pr. minute. So this actually works. thank you Danae.
i also practice arpeggios following the your tutorials with the same amazing results.
Another fantastic thing is that my improved technique makes everything I play sound much better.

It’s my first time to run across her teaching.
It seems hard but I will try to do it.
I will enjoy it myself first then my husband and children and grandchildren when they come to visit and many more. Wow !!!

I have been practicing the E major scale because I watched this video and I am finally getting a handle on playing one of my favorite Nocturnes by Chopin. You are the most intelligent pianist your directions are so clear and it's a pleasure to listen to. You respect your listener very well. I reviewed this video several times to make sure I understood all. I like the special exercises with stopping on the 2nd finger then loosening the thumb then quickly play the notes until the next 2nd finger. I think this might help me. My left hand is doing so much better than my right hand, i get tense in the right hand thumb only when playing scales and hope this will help me.
I tried to compare what i am doing differently with the two hands and there is no visual difference. So i will use your exercises to work on the psycho motor side.

I'm teaching myself. I'm very conscious of how my fingers move rather than just robotically playing notes and thinking about what I need to put on my grocery shopping list at the same time. I'm 87, not 10, 20, 30 or 40. Nevertheless I've gotten excellent results with your advice in this video. One frustration for me is chromatic scales. I just can't play them as fast as I would like. If you would like, I would really like to see how you position your hand and move your fingers playing chromatic scales. Thank you so much for this video lesson.

    •  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

This looks interesting - some of the techniques remind me of how I would teach students to learn scales. As a jazz player I struggle to get to swing 1/8th notes at around 300 BPM - while improving. I will try this. Only half of the exercises might be enough.

Your articulation is so clear and very smooth. When playing this on guitar one thing that goes wrong for students is they begin grouping them in 3s or 6s. This is because they usually play 3 notes per string. The hard thing is to keep all the notes ungrouped so sounding as smooth as possible and along with a click track. Here your articulation is perfectly clear. It takes quite a long time to get over the hump but once you have it playing correctly a great technique is established. Practising correctly is so important.

Your videos are amazing! Start practicing with your method. One question about how to use this method to practice D flat major or other scales not start with thumb. Is the thumb always going down? For example, in D flat major, the first note is used 2nd finger in D flat, should I go down and up on 3rd finger in e flat and then down in f with thumb?

Thank you for this helpful video
. Suggestion: locate the camera at 45 degrees so that we can see the notes you are playing. Sometimes hard to follow

Good tips and pointers! Excellent presentation. But while I can't exactly put my finger on it, there's something that keeps distracting me from the subject at hand.

Danae, I would like to hear your thoughts about the correct technique in general. Topics such as the role of arm weight, wrist, rotation, tilting, and finger movement comes to mind, i.e. when to use each and how. Specifically, in most of your videos you describe helpful practices, but could you also please fit a section on the source of movement (which muscle, how much movement, force, etc) in your videos? I have found that in playing the more demanding pieces even the slightest over/under-doing a move can quickly accumulate and result in tension/fatigue and in my case injury. Just seeing how a concert pianist performs a fast passage is not expressive enough of what micro movements she is leveraging to make it happen. I know these must come naturally to you, but trying to analyze and explain it for the amateur among us would be priceless.

Thank you again Danae, lovely playing and lovely person. I like the piano piece playing during the pause, what is that?

    •  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Thank you so much! The piece in the pause is a live recording of me playing Clara Schumann’s piano concerto last year. 🤗

Hi Danae. Love your tutorial. Very helpful. Thank you so much!
I wonder if you could use a video camera over the keyboard? This would make it possible to see what exactly you do with your hands/fingers. I had to watch your finger work through the reflection in the fallboard. Again, thank you very much for your tutorial.

I feel that the fingers before the thumb crossing (middle finger and ring finger) feel more flexibel through the lifted wrist because tension is released.

    •  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes absolutely. And when you are in the slow tempo you have the time to do that entire movement and make sure to have the tension released. When you are playing through at a fast tempo, you cannot lift your wrist up and down but you will know what the right feeling of “no tension” feels like and will be able to get there with minimal movement. Thanks for watching! 🙏🏻

Thank you for this really important content! Would u know to say how long did you take to get your scales on a high level? I know it's a steady work, but.. just to know haha

    •  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

It depends on how you count that. I started playing the piano when I was five and started doing these specific exercises when I was about 7. Once I started practicing them like that, it took me about a year to get to a high level and pretty fast tempo. But of course, if you are already more advanced with your technique than I was at that age and are now putting some extra work into scales, I think it can also go faster, maybe 5-6 months. :)

Thank you for this great video. Do you suggest playing these with a metronome? If so, do you have a starting metronome marking suggestion?

    •  ปีที่แล้ว

I would suggest starting out practicing the scales with the metronome anywhere between 100-112, depending on your level. I started out practicing these with the metronome and now just practice them without. But it is a great check, especially in the beginning, to make sure that you stay in time and play the notes very regularly. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻

Dear Danae. The first time i watch your video, and i'm sure i'm gonna watch many more, but i have sometimes difficulties to understand the exercises. For example Exercise 4, i can't figure out what to do. Perhaps it would be better to show the exercise first in a slow tempo while you say the notes that you play, and then show it in a faster tempo. Again, i'm sure your video's are great and i'm gonna watch many more. Thanks

I teach a few students online because my time for that is unfortunately quite limited. All my tutorials are here on my channel, but I also have an online piano course on basic technique building exercises that you can enlist in: www.pianist.academy/Danae-doerken?ref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pianist.academy%2Fa%2F2147498440%2F6dvUeP6G
