That guide was the reason BST was never invited to pt's, but oh no, when there was a riot at Crawlers Nest who was there controlling the problem? yes, the BST's, i did it sometimes, was a lot of fun.
BST to 75 solo for me was a single player game I beg for to this day! I miss it constantly and it's the benchmark for survival games for me lol. I was elvaan btw, at least I had CHR on my side.
I loved BST. Took it to cap as my second job after rdm. And it was not at all because of the guide haha. Just a great job to solo. After lvl 30, I always made sure my weapon was between 5 and 10 levels lower than I was to help prevent stealing hate from my pet. And I used jug pets and healing food all the time. I was a cook so it was cost effective to craft and sell extras to fund my adventuring. Also, I think the guide listed /brd because people may have considered it so much thinking the chr boost would be a great idea. Awesome video man! Thanks for the memories.
I was a Galka BST and a Tarutaru BST across retail and private servers. While it was significantly easier to charm things on Taru, Galka BST just felt right. It's kinda like how Tauren are Druids in WoW. When duoing it was almost always /WHM or /NIN. The best thing about BST was how many BCNMs you could easily solo and sell drops for profit.
Pet used to reduce exp for a pt/solo, so if u/leave pet before the kill u whouldnt recive exp penalty. Fix where mobs whould dispawn was made to prevent MPK because after pet was released it whould slowly walk back to its original spawn point, I personally killed few parties who envaded my camp while exping.
Classic BST/PLD Hume. I can openly say I relied on shield bash a lot when soloing to interrupt a lot of enemy skills. shield mastery was nice when lowering that interruption when casting cure back in the day. (dispite the low / laughable mp)
I was a Galka Bst/Whm before DNC existed for a sub. I feel like every time I charmed something it built up this hate. Because I would have so many failures. We would do duos and trios sometimes. If you didn’t drop your pet quick enough the xp penalty sucked. Soloing I deleveled several times as Galka. Just the misfires were so costly and before despawning it was a blood bath lol. We used Tuna Sushi+1 for charm boost especially for 2-houring. You wanted to grab an IT to Familiar that was our best chance. I heard Rdm was the better sub then and some of my friends did /Nin. I only did /whm. See you live Huntin! -Frozendragon77
That Refresh harness you are talking about gave you refresh when under 50 mp. I used it all the time when I solo'd to 75 back in the day, never having to rest for MP was huge!
I have my guide by my pc still! I rejoined ffxi a few months back after quitting fixing and this guide has been invaluable in getting equipment from quests that just aren’t on the mb any more :) it’s really helped with the job quests too.
How beastmaster affected XP in parties or solo back in the day. There were two things to consider, the level of the charmed pet relative to the highest leveled character in the party (or BST if solo) and whether or not the pet was still charmed when the target was defeated. If the pet was higher level than the highest member of the party, you would get XP based on the pets level, even if the pet was no longer charmed when the target died. This was rarely an issue because most of the time you wouldn't use a Tough or higher level mob as a pet due to charm duration issues. The second issue was the more important one. If the pet was still charmed when the target died, it would count the pet as an extra party member and the XP would be adjusted down because of it. The Leave ability fixed that issue so even in classic FFXI the pet would not affect a parties XP as long as the BST left the pet before the target died. This is also why solo BST would hold their TP until the target was almost dead because they would need to leave their pet just before the target died to get full XP. The weaponskill was intended to be the finishing move and missed or a subpar damage WS could often lead to death. It's also why using sound aggressive pets was typically more dangerous than sight aggressive pets. It was easier to position yourself to avoid 'Leaved' pet aggro by smart positioning with sight aggro pets. It's also why it was a risky idea to use the same type of pet as the target prey if it used the link mechanic.
I'm pretty sure with /bst you could charm mobs up to your current main job level or the level of your bst, whichever was lower. I had a brd/bst charming eyes on my Ohat run and it blew my mind.
BST was the knight in shining armor in my days. I remember the first time I saw SE's mass RMT ban of 20k+ player accounts. It was a huge announcement and it started the trend for Bst's camping RMT fishers in Quifim. They were also like a restaurant "Chef", basically if you pissed them off they could; for lack of better term, "spit in your food". They would drop monsters they knew were VT+ on top of parties, it was a crazy time but after the despawn patch came out, Bst finally found some stable footing for their reputation. Then there was the legenday BST only Linkshell, KillerInstinct. These guys were what every Bst main wanted to be, a guild full of only Beastmasters, and a couple WHM and PLD for support. FFXI truly had some amazing events made by the players using the tools given to them.
FFXI was for me and still is the best and most challenging game I've ever played. You are the perfect balance of nostalgia and expertise. Appreciate the content. Peace and love bro. .
Galkan BST checking in. Missed charms and running for your life always kept me on my toes. Always had fun leveling in areas where parties wouldn’t, literally had the map to myself/duo partner quite often. BCNMs were great money makers. Shout out to my old LS - Fun With Jugs on the Siren server.
As someone who has taken BST to 75 probably 3-4 times through out retail and privates already and currently sitting at 62 on my Taru and 70 on my Hume on the NAS server, it is still one of my favorite jobs, I will never get tired of it. It has its ups and downs and I've seen the floor more times then I can count but it will always be a super fun job to play and I got to experience a few really fun BST parties. Plus BST Taru in AF? Best.
I loved BST, it was my favorite job in FFXI by far. I leveled it to 75 on 4 different characters, each a different race and using a different leveling path to get there. My first 75 BST happened before ToAU came out, and was far and away the toughest to max out. I did my second after ToAU was released and the path from 62-75 was exponentially easier thanks to exp/Sanction bonuses and great camps. My 3rd I leveled as much as I could in WoTG, which was quite challenging but a great experience nonetheless. My final one I just used all the best/favorite camps still in existence after they raised the level cap and adjusted mobs in many zones. One thing I really miss was being able to solo/farm things that most other jobs needed a full party for. Soloing stuff like Despot, and Ancient Goobue, duoing Hakutaku, taking down Jormy with a pet alliance. So many fun times I'll never be able to experience again.
The part about BST being a bad subjob is actually not true. I remember the charm success rate actually still went through depending on the max level of your BST even subbed. My friend and I spent a lot of time duoing as DNC/BST when WotG came out and it worked out really well.
I remember when jug pets came out, I forget what the lvl cap was at the time. But when it was possible to solo dynamis got me an excaliber, aegis and mandou.
I’m finally giving bst a try on Wings private server. Got it to 18 in a few hours soloing with an xp ring. It’s pretty fun so far can’t believe in 20 years I haven’t tried it. Bst and Smn are the only two jobs I haven’t leveled.
As Someone who played BST in FFXI I was quite often forced from my camp by other players saying that SOLO PLAYERS SHOULDN"T BE ALLOWED TO CAMP the only times I played BST is when members of my linkshell where offline and I needed to farm Mats and crystals for crafting or during certain missions where we needed a little bit extra muscle from pets and summons
I remember that originally, Mob AOEs would hit other players. This was real fun in places like Garbage Shitadel when fighting Bombs. Boom! multiple parties wiped out by a single BST... good times, good times. (note, I'm NOT talking about MPK. No matter how far from everyone else you pulled the Bomb, eventually a party or two or three would camp right on top of you). I also remember that /BST was totally broken. after dinging 75 BST solo, I decided to solo WHM/BST and to my delight, at 75, WHM/BST was basically 75WHM/75BST. Edit: I was a Galka BST. It had it's ups and downs. On the upside, in a duo/trio/party "wipe", my Galka arse would often be the only man left standing. On the downside, solo, it often went "Mis-charm....mis-charm...mis-DEAD.

Having 75BST made leveling from 5 - 18 (MNK is better sub from 1 - 4 for the H2H skill) on other jobs much more enjoyable with the ability to charm just as well as a BST main.
