More like, Marcy was bitted on the step before the adulthood so she grow up and her act was from an eternal rebel teen but after the chapter when she becomes human for a while and about to die, she grows up a little. Obviously she's still irreverent, but a sensitive one lol While Bonnie builts her own kingdom and the responsability was too much for her, making her loose all her youth and her friendship/romance with Marcy, she had to grow fast to asume the responsability that she mades on herself But she changes on the Varmints chapter where she realize that she have friends to trust and she's not alone. Like you say, is a long character developement..
I've always really enjoyed the contrast of their development. Put simply, Bubblegum learns to chill while Marcy grows up. They start at opposite points; Bubblegum is a controlling workaholic and Marceline is an out-of-control rebel. Over the course of the series, they help each other mellow out and borrow each other's best traits.
Tbh At first it was a good relationship, like a knight and his princess but as the series went on we began to see that they don’t fit together anymore, they kept distancing themselves from one another, but Still it was a good first relationship in adventure time.

I'm shocked by the amount of people defending Marcy and saying it was PB's fault in their break up. I love Marcy more but I would be harsh too since she literally said she was okay with the mass death of a race just because PB was busy trying to save people and not giving her attention. Marcy had the right to eventually get mad that PB is more into her work than her but to have a bitchfit when lives were at stake was just horrifyingly insensitive.
At the time I was like: "You really are acting like a little girl and you don't even care that an entire kingdom is going to die, you have no right at this moment to be angry"
It's likely that Marceline's resentment towards Bubblegum's neglectful behaviour was built over the course of the time and not spontaneously. This scene must've been the breaking point for Marceline as Bubblegum possibly had done nothing but exarcebate her insecurities further.

It probably build up over the year but tht doesn't mean she has the rights to act immature and insulting when PB wants to save ppl. In the end, they both learn and acknowledge their fault so tht's rlly beautiful, Marcy no longer thinks she is a monster, finally got the closure with her mom.
