- After cowriting "The Bruce Lee Story" that was the foundational material for the movie DRAGON, biographer and investigative journalist Tom Bleecker traveled to Hong Kong to begin asking the tough questions regarding the death of his personal friend, kung-fu icon Bruce Lee. This video is a brief accounting of some of his recollections. Upon the completion of his investigation in Hong Kong, as well as in the States, he wrote "Unsettled Matters: the Life and Death of Bruce Lee," which became a bestseller.
Surprised I haven’t found this before. I was born the year Bruce Lee died. In the late 80’s I would buy any book or magazine about Bruce Lee and read them obsessively. At the time there was some exaggerations but nothing like the crazy, superhuman stories about Lee that come out now. I like to tell other fans, ‘I’m a Bruce Lee fan from the school that knows …Bruce didn’t play ping pong’ !
While it’s fascinating to see a man become a legend and how the stories have expanded and changed and blurred, over time,
These stories are like gold. Just little things or conversations from his life as a man. Instead of the exaggerated stories retold a thousand times of his life as a star.
Thank you.
Thank you. I'm always pleased when a viewer finds these TH-cam videos of value.
#milescoleman910, I feel the same. Bruce has been made into this super human being when in reality he is every bit as mortal as any human.
Honestly, you are the most reflective investigator of this topic. The marriage to Bruce's widow is mindblowing also. That is a part of your life and what happened would be a real eye opener, though it may be too personal and involve legal things?...
There aren't any legal issues connected to my marriage to Bruce's widow Linda. You may find my novel "Tea Money" of interest, which is the third and final installment of my Bruce Lee trilogy and answers several key questions.
@@TomBleecker I saw that title, but I meant non fiction, the actual unfiltered story you could tell.
@@jeffgoesrandom4217 When the movie DRAGON was released, Linda was asked how much of it was true. Her response was the movie is a "fictionalization of a true story." I suppose I could make the same observation about "Tea Money."
It’s really interesting in listening to all stories related to Bruce Lee from you Mr Bleecker 👍
Thanks for doing this videos as they provide the best insight into Bruce Lee I have come across so far. Very informative.
Great description of that apartment, and the prelude to your entry.. I saw it, felt it.. thank you for sharing.
I'm fan of your book, Unsettled Matters, Tom. It's nice to hear you talking about Bruce again.
Thank you for your work sir!
Thank you. My pleasure.
happy to have found you tom, love from italy, robert,!
Mr Bleecker, thank you for these videos, and also for your book. I am really glad that everything you wrote is now being vindicated. It's quite ironic that things seem to have gone full circle since 1973! I was not around at the time, but I understand that initially, people took for granted that he had either been murdered, or had died from drugs. Even today, when a famous celebrity dies young, those are the first two explanations that people jump to. It seems that all the more elaborate explanations came about as part of the commercial and media explosion in the years afterwards, and that these gradually supplanted what was considered obvious in 1973. Almost 50 years later, that wave has passed, and we are back to the two options that would have seemed the obvious ones right at the beginning!
I completely agree. Life is strange sometimes. Thanks for your post.
@@TomBleecker do you intend to release another edition of Unsettled Matters? Perhaps to incorporate the discovery of the Bob Baker letters, and anything else that may have emerged since it was first written?
@@NH1973 I presently have no plans on writing any additional books on Bruce. As you may know, 25 years ago in "Unsettled Matters," I identified Bob Baker as Bruce's drug supplier and several other revelations that only those who knew Bruce personally believed. In any case, in my view, after 25 years, there isn't enough new information to merit a new book on Bruce, even in light of those drug letters. Thanks for your post.
@@TomBleecker thanks for the reply. "Unsettled Matters" really still stands out as a unique Bruce Lee book. There have been so many biographies by now, and I have probably read them all. Eventually, they all seem to recycle the same information though. Your book still stands out as a fresh take, and much more daring. I also like Bey Logan's "Bruce Lee and I", which is a bit different from the usual approach.
This sounds like the plot to Revenge of the Black Dragon.
What an adventure in Hong Kong and a nice insight into the culture that brought up Bruce Lee.
Hi Tom, Dragon in old Chinese can also be understood as master. The dragon is a master. This fish like state of kaos settles into the patient of a master. This epoch in your life to a degree you have mastered and found the tides of calmer waters
Recently found your book, first edition. Best wishes
A rare copy!
great video
Besides the material influences, Hong Kong has incredible natural beauty. Growing up in Kowloon, looking up Victoria Peak, only the he most ignorant would fail to appreciate that beauty.
as Rick James said

A good guess is that Theresa Teng is the “Theresa” that Bruce Lee mentioned to Bob Baker in the letter about their planned rendezvous.
There have been rumours of Bruce not being faithful to Linda. There are details of it in Mathew Pollys book. What's your opinion on these stories of him being a womaniser and his affair with Betty Ting Pei?
Polly isn't by any means the first writer to comment on Bruce Lee's alleged affairs. I commented on them in my first book on Bruce which was published 27 years ago. In the Chinese culture in which Bruce was raised, men who are successful have mistresses. That Bruce had extramarital relationships should not be taken as a sign that he didn't love his wife.
@@TomBleecker I absolutely have no doubt he did. He wasn't perfect obviously but it makes him more relatable as a human being. Despite his flaws, he never gave up and achieved his dream in the end.
@@CLARKE176 If Bruce defined his dream when he wrote his "Definite Chief Aim in Life," which was that (I paraphrase) he would first achieve fame and fortune, and then live peacefully and the way he chose, then he only achieved the first part of his dream.
@@TomBleecker sadly true. Do you know what his thoughts were on communism and chairman Mao?
@@CLARKE176 I don't. I don't ever recall Bruce talking about politics. Keep in mind that he was raised in a democrat society in Hong Kong and never spent a day of his life living under communism.
I remember in late 1992 or early 1993. On tv it said “Was he poison by the chinese mafia?”. So all these years his death remains a mystic.
Apparently so, along with hundreds of thousands of other deaths worldwide.
@@TomBleecker , did u met him when he was alive?
@@untitle161 You'll find the answers to most of your questions by watching some of the 21 TH-cam videos I did I Bruce. th-cam.com/video/31ypiWAbNXA/w-d-xo.html This is one of them: th-cam.com/video/a3Xl1_e7E9Y/w-d-xo.html
I personally spoke to Ted Wong who told me what Bruce's mom said she thinks happened to him when he spoke with her at the time of his death.
And.....?
Way to leave us hanging!
His mom believe it was the family curse being carried by the poisoning of his food by the triads that were involved with movie making. This was before Brandon died mysterious.
My Dad say it was toxicity of Betty Ting's _Yīn Dào_ that did Bruce Lee in.
Hi Tom
What's your take on Vic Moore a karate champion that said he beat Bruce Lee in a speed test?
What's your take in people saying Bruce wasn't the real deal just an actor pretending to be a martial artist?
The speed test between Bruce Lee and Vic Moore, in my view, was a no win for both. If you stop the video when Bruce's backfist is fully extended, it's clear that Vic Moore didn't block it; however, Bruce's backfist was too far out of range to have hit Moore. As Bruce retracts his backfist, he shuffles forward and ends up nose-to-nose, thus giving the impression that he was well in range to have hit Moore. Those who claim Bruce wasn't a real martial artist never witnessed his skill level in person, let alone been on the receiving end, as I have. While there is truth in the old saying "seeing is believing," a much truer experience comes from "feeling is believing." Thanks for your post.
@@TomBleecker Thank you Tom for all your work and quick response
Didn't Bruce come from a home life that had a butler?
I think that's a misconception. His childhood was spent living in an upstairs crowded apartment with his parents and four siblings. To say that the family had a formal butler, as most people would define butler, in my view is misleading. Moreover, some people conflate Wu Ngan, who was Bruce's house servant (sometimes referred to as Bruce's butler) when Bruce lived in Kowloon in the early 1970s, with the notion of a butler residing in Bruce's childhood apartment.
Tom I very much enjoyed your book ''Unsettled Matters'' when it first came out. I was a 13 year old when Bruce's films first started hitting the cinemas over here in England in the early 70's. And, on reflection, the media publications had
given us a one sided view of Bruce Lee's life. Back in my younger days I would not of been able to accept some of the insights you had brought forth in UM so I do understand the backlash you received although unfair that it was. I do value truth
over myth. Thank you for your reply and
clarification on the butler issue. Very much enjoying your videos on Bruce Lee. I think these will become classic documentations eventually. All the best.
@@highlightoftheday7058 I'm hopeful that one day a truthful and full accounting of Bruce's life will be made, either as a documentary or a feature film. Thanks for your post.
Please go to Wilmington NC to investigate Brandon Lee's death
So who kill him and why?
Although there are many theories surrounding the possibility of foul play, there has never been any solid evidence of who might have been responsible and what their motive was. Since those drug letters went public over a year ago, the growing theory is that Bruce died from his own drug abuse.
Can someone explain please
What part of the video is confusing you?
I Just want to know why they did this To Bruce lee. I think I got a small Glips why but there seems to be something missing.
Who are the "they" you're referring to?
I loved it Tom!
That was awesome
2024 and I guess the official cause of death still stands.
Perhaps technically, especially given that all the medical records and legal depositions no longer exist now that Hong Kong was given back to the Communists. That said, few people, if any, given any credence to the single pill of Equagesic theory.
