  • Shot 100% on the HD HERO3+® camera from ‪GoPro.com. Watch with headphones.
    Tony Royster Jr. discovered his calling in life was to play the drums; he was 3 years old. At the age of 5, his father bought him his first real drum set. By the time he was 11, he was labeled a child prodigy, and ranked among the best in the world.
    "I just continued to play, to stick with it. I always had a passion for drums….the rhythm, the feel, the sound, the way it made me feel when I played, automatically made me feel like this is what I'm supposed to be doing." Tony Royster, Jr.
    Today, Tony is widely recognized as one of the world's most acclaimed & gifted drummers, working and touring with the world's biggest rock & hip hop acts. GoPro is honored to present a unique glimpse into Tony's gift as told through an intimate, live multimedia drum performance.
    Recorded on a custom built GoPro production set at the DW drum factory, and scored by Tony's personal home video projections, Tony transforms his drums, childhood memories, and a few GoPro cameras into a drum solo that must be heard, and seen, to believe..

    To all drummers everywhere: keep on drumming, moving, grooving, sweating, breathe, relax, expand, contract, breathe, exhale, feel, be real, trust yourself, practice, breathe, keep on drumming....never stop drumming, move ahead, feel, be real, smile.

    I am not dissing anyone, but issuing a challenge: Try to appreciate talent instead of commenting negatively. If its your first reaction to want to say something negative, challenge yourself by watching the video and trying a compliment instead. If its not your style or something like that, try use the video to experience something new and broaden your horizons a bit :) This kid is amazing! Lets love not hate, fellow humans! :D

    I had the pleasure of meeting this gentleman when he was 18. I drum as well (nowhere near his skill level) and happened to be in a recording studio in NYC and saw a practice pad and some sticks lying there. Of course I felt inclined to pick the sticks up and peck at the pad a bit. This dude must've had a radar because I had no idea he was in the building at all. Just appears like a wizard around the corner of the next room and watches me drum for a bit. Then after a moment nods his head in approval and sticks out his hand and motions that he'd like to try. I needed a new pair of pants after he played.
    P.S. Tony is a humble dude.

    Tony Royster Jr has personified the term "best drummer" he has mastered everything from raw groove and powerful technique to theory and flow, this guy can literally build emotions and write stories from behind the kit, he has taken the lessons from years of praised drummers and molded them into a style that could suit just about anyone's ears and stop anybody in their tracks to watch, this guys has truly become the master as such a young age, there is no better model of persistence, talent, hard work, and dedication. Thank you Tony Royster for being such an inspiration to all drummers out there today.

Now the past 12 years I’ve became a session drummer in the studio and touring the world for bands in need of a drummer on the road. for anyone that jumps on here and tries to "critique" any of his playing, or put down the fact that he's "just fast" or whatever else....first: look yourself in the mirror. Second: take your hand and raise it to about face level. Third: clench said hand until it forms a fist. Fourth: push said fist at a rapid pace into your face multiple times. How on earth can anyone think they can say anything bad about this dude. Seriously, just shut up. Dont hate because you aint as good as him. It actually just makes those people look pathetic....

      ***** The fact that YOU can't comprehend it doesn't mean that others can't. I can completely understand what he is doing. Also, its a damn SOLO. He plays drums for Jay-Z (Which I think is a waste of his talent) so don't think he can't play "music". I love his solos. He doesn't play much in 4/4 time either, he has much more complex time-signatures. This guy is amazing at drums, and as a drummer of 16 years, I have not ONE bad thing to say about his skills.

    • @RickDawg527

      ***** greeeeeat....a high school kids that knows everything. Kid, I've been playin the drums longer than you've been alive. Any GOOD drummer can tell you that when you play MUSIC, your emotions come through what you play. Rudimentally, yeah, i understand what he's playing playing how he's playing it. Its easy to see through what he plays his different emotions. Plus, unless your an idiot, the videos compliments what hes playing too. So do yourself a favor and just shut up. You trying to make any "valid points" just makes you look even more like an idiot.

    How silly of people to think that the divine will concern itself with making someone a good drummer. How bout he was around his fathers band since a baby listening to music, it absorbed into his subconscious. Then started at the age of 5 when your brain has not gone through the process of proliferation it is easier to learn things especially if the brain is interested in the subject and can focus ( precisely the reason that a 8 year old can learn a second language faster than a 35 year old). Then his music loving parents taught him the basics at 5 years old which he absorbed easily. Then they decided when he was only 5 that music was in his soul and let him practice hours and hours daily. So tony earned it. The only gift was supporting parents and a healthy body. God has bigger matters to attend to with the cosmos then worrying about one human drums. No one oerson is quite that special.

      Brass Man drum solos are free form expressions and demonstrations of technical prowess, like any other form of art. The soloist isn't constrained to 'conventional' rhythms, nor having to lead anybody, in the same way a painter isn't necessarily aiming to photo-realistically replicate a scene.

    Music is not a sport its all about expression of your inner self. Many metal drummers can do arrangements like these but not many drummers can express themselves like Gavin Harrison or Neal Peart. Just to name a couple.

    • @ryanvoshell9722
      @ryanvoshell9722 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      adam gereluk you just don't speak the language that the metal drummers speak, they are expressing what's inside of them and it's full of emotion, but if you don't speak the language then you don't know what they're saying. It's not better or worse than other genres, just different, each one is a unique language itself. I hope that makes sense.

      +Dylan DeBord Lol people and not understanding subdivisions of rhythm... Pretty sure if you practiced even a 10th as much as this guy you would perhaps learn to grasp what he is doing. He isnt even playing time in this piece often, but when he is its tight as.

      +Dylan DeBord guessing you're the kinda person that prefers to always play in 4/4 aren't you? and i bet you can't grasp metric modulation either. As a person who writes every part for the progressive metal band i'm in WITH jazz influences, i think i'd know what i'm talking about. But please, feel free to keep expanding your sphere of ignorance.

    Technically he is amazing, there is no denying that. Strokes, singles and doubles, are flawless at any speed. He just seems to lack character. When Steve Jorden, Jeff Pocaro, Questlove, Jojo Mayer, Bernard Purdie etc. play, you can close your eyes and hear their style, nuances and focus on different details. I always missed that with Mr. Royster. Anyways, still a good video.

    So much negativity calling this boring. If you played drums it wouldn't be so boring. Tony Royster Jr. is big in the drumming community and a lot of drummers in the 18-25 age group grew up with him. He's an inspiration. The stuff you just saw him play, a lot of us can't even dream of doing. Maybe not adrenaline pumping no, and boring to some sure, but not everyone find sports interesting either. There's a big world out there, and a GoPro can record and share all of it.

      This is pretty much the pinnacle of what some people call 'ADD Drum Solo'.
      -Play a groove for less than a minute
      -Play the same groove faster
      -Play some flashy fills full of double bass and fancy movements
      -Play a groove that has nothing to do with what you played before
      -Repeat
      (-If you have a big drum set, make sure that you hit every single piece of it during your solo)
      An example on how to not do that would be Benny Greb. His drums solos have structure and are not just 'look at me playing fancy shit!'

    • @TheJokesterSCR
      @TheJokesterSCR 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You guys are ridiculous... Just because your simple mind cant comprehend his technicality and complex time signatures does not mean he can't play music. This is a SOLO. If you don't like his style then fine, but don't try to critique him until you can play better.

    • @TheJokesterSCR
      @TheJokesterSCR 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bruno de Souza Lino Tony Royster drums circles around Benny Greb. Benny's solos are boring and he rarely uses any time signature besides 4/4 which is basic and not nearly as impressive.

    • @BrunodeSouzaLino
      @BrunodeSouzaLino 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      *****
      Keeping time has absolutely nothing to do with 'keeping a consistent groove' going. Any competent drummer can keep time without thinking. Also, he's not backing anything or doing rhythm for music. This is a free time drum solo. He makes his own time. So the concept of keeping time doesn't apply here.
