I'm just good enough to keep a beat on drums, nothing more. The 4/4 stuff was super impressive. The 13/16 is so out of my league I can barely conceptualize what's happening but my ear tells me it works lol
Took the words right out of my mouth!! My thoughts exactly. I thought, to the untrained ear, this is just beating the crap out of a drumset randomly. But to those of us who know, are brains are breaking trying to keep up 🤣 P.s. take a break today and watch this video again today. It's well worth it. You're welcome :)
with enough desire to get better you gonna play something more complex very soon! I love drums, can play some metallica hits learned from pure curiosity and desire. and I suck in life at all :D
yeah man, i remember his performance as a kid from the old days lol, first time i'm seeing him since that video obviously i had my expectations high, i was not let down.
Mike Mateo that ain’t how it works, each beat is measured by a 16th note that’s where it comes from, then you have 13 beats (13 16th notes) per measure
LOL. I do this all the time when playing tabla. Basically you have a 16 beat cycle, over which half time, or the base beat, is 8 beats per "bar". You then progressively up the tempo by playing a cycle of 10 beats, then 12, then 14, then eventually get to full time by playing 16 beats per bar. Then you go to double time - 20, 24, 28, 32. The whole idea is to not only add a little spice to the performance, but also to stimulate your own mind as a player during the course of accompaniment.
I'm a guitarist/other string instrument player primarily but I watch drumming videos like it's my job - it's creative in a different direction and I love it

+chris macklin Great analogy! A lot of great drummers 'make it look easy.' When I watch Tony, I think, "OK I saw him do that but it still seems impossible." The way he switches the beat around in the first solo is amazing. Incredible double bass technique!
I'm totally non-musical. I can't play any instrument to save my life. That's not my gift, but I'm totally awestruck when I see musicians who can really play, and especially when see, and hear people like Tony Royster Jr. That's truly a gift from God!
What's the address? I remember the one in which he dedicated his performance to Tony Williams but not the one you mentioned. I'd like to see that one!!!!!

Above and beyond the natural gifts he must have, I can't even imagine the work ethic and time involved to become as amazing as he is. It is truly inspiring.
I have soooooooo much respect for you percussionist that play the trap drum set well. My word was it an overwhelming experience for me the first time I actually stood next to a really-really good absolute monster on the trap drums back in college. I was a music major in college (Classical Guitar). We had a well known professional (I am so very sorry that I have forgotten his name) visit the campus and after his symposium dealing with all types of percussion instruments (including the trap drum set), I stayed behind asking him my very stupid questions (he really was a very cool and patient guide) showing about four or five of us different rhythms and techniques. I cannot put into words how mind-numbingly awesome this guy was on the drum set. I'm standing right there watching and listening and I still could not believe how complicated and technical this guy was playing just like nothing.......all simultaneously....just....there are no words. From that day many years ago to now, I have nothing but total admiration and respect for great drummers that can do it all...like butter. This gentleman in this video did a great job and gave me some really cool flashbacks. If you ever get a chance to see a professional drummer play a spanish clave rhythm on the trap drums set Check This Out...it will blow your mind. This is soooooo very complicated and mind blowing to watch in person and hear. Any way, great job in this video sir.
Stan Whiting the evolution of tony royster DVD has an awesome solo on it that features a lot of musicality. Thats my favorite solo, he has some speed to it but its different from his typical speed show as you stated. Heres the url tag: /watch?v=slbFJyRC0N0
Love how he's so on in 4-4 that the "Two" disappears because it's the sound that most resembles the sound of the snare. The "T" and the snare shot have to happen exactly at the same instant to get that effect. Cool.
I love exploiting that in practice! I do an exercise sometime where I play a roll for a certain number of bars without hearing the metronome before I'm allowed to finish (it maaaaaaaay have given me an anxiety disorder, but it was great for my drumming).
LOVE how the FIRST thing he addresses is that sometimes it's required to not stay perfectly on the metronome!! soooo important! there's some great music especially classic rock where the drums go off time completely for certain breaks or parts and it adds so much soulful dynamic to the music! when you just play perfect beats, you don't have much room for painting pictures or making those really trippy beats...like this video :) love you tony
I been remixing Rush 's Tom Sawyer and yeah the first 2 bars are on the money and then it "rushes" the rest of the song..of course we are talking about the master himself RIP Neil Peart

@@philipnestor5034 Agree completely. I started drumming (officially) when I was 14 and I'm now 58. About two months ago I got the Tommy Igoe DVD and the George Stone stick control book and broke my playing down all the way to whether I was even gripping the sticks properly. I've been practicing for at least two hours a day since then and found a local instructor with a good reputation. I'll be starting lessons as soon as our governor lets us start doing stuff again. And this was all after a couple of weeks in February when I'd decided to give up the drums for good because I just didn't enjoy it any longer. To correct the folks here stating the meter, the metronome is in 13/16. He even states it at the beginning of the video, but if you think of it as 2/4+5/16, you can count it much easier, and it will line up with the metronome.
To me what separates good musicians from great musicians is the ability to adapt to any genre and the ability to improv on command while still staying in the pocket. 💯. The speed and the flashy skill is just perks that you aquire over a long period of time learning the instrument. While flashy is cool, the main task at hand is just staying in the pocket. ✌️
If you we're to walk past somebody watching this video at 6:15 and you can't hear the audio, you would think they're watching it in fast forward. It's insane how fast his hands can move!
All improvised, not the slightest miscalculation or fumble of a stick, every swing is so precise his margin of error is probably the size of a quarter on the center of the drum head 😂
3.38 nice fill. Nice time keeping. I think sometimes as drummers we become so lost in technique that we can lose track of time sometimes. We are in good company if you listen to ELP Carl Palmer is not always in time and he is a very impressive drummer. The chops are nice but the time keeping is better. A lot of drummers have the chops but keeping in time whilst playing them is another skill entirely and not one I ever fully mastered but then again I come from the Clem Burke school of when playing live you expect imperfections. There are some great drummers who just seem to have natural time and that is a skill which can not be taught. I remember seeing the late Rob Heaton years ago and his time keeping was excellent. I have noticed drummers who play other instruments often understand time better than drummers like me who play just the one. I am not sure if anyone has noticed this?
I'll have her in my head as my new click for now on...argh!!! No really great job man... and ma'am! Thanks for the education and demonstration on always returning to the basics and the fundamentals of our skill set. Your a humble guy too!
I had a roland td6v (upgraded to TD-12 for use of vh-11 and positional sensing) trigger the software EZdrummer or superior drummer (one is advanced version) through midi DIY mesh head triggers, not much different if at all than what a lot of people do with their td30s, can do all this for around a grand w/ used roland cymbal pads (VH-11 hi hat 3zone 12" ride 2 cy8 crashes and DIY dualzone trigger drums (get worn out toms for cheap/free) just wanted to share would have saved me a good bit of cash if i knew this from the start lol,
god i wish i could see his delicious sweaty feet pressing against those dirty pedals until one of his shoes comes flying off revealing his perfectly shapen toes with toenails at the perfect length, not too short, not too long, just long enough for me to slide my tongue under his toenails and lick them clean
Over rated ???? no way this kid is a Beast so what if he chooses to groove in 4/4 it matters not, he can play everyinch of his kit in whatever meter you throw at him.

1 2 3 4 5 6 + 1 2 3 4 5 6 + : so six and a half times two is 13. But why is it 13/16 where is the 16 from? Thanks

my guitarist said i was better than peter criss so i mean, thats something.
I like these Tony Royster practice this and that videos, he clearly just showing off and blasts the the staff/audience away with his insane skills.
Great Drummer have been watching your playing since you were a little guy. Blessings!!!
I smiled the whole time...
Only Tony can make metro practice turn into a Grammy Award nominee!
is the metronome that follows Tony ....
Pure GOLD ! Thank you so much fine young man for doing great job! =)
Some people just understand music in a way most ppl including myself could never learn or accomplish without people like Royster Jr.
Effortless! This man is on a different level!!!!
The 393 dislikes; go re-evaluate your own lives! This is great playing and great work.
3:28 I really wish he would've kept that going a lil longer.
Amazing!
I know that performance deserves more words but I'm too blown away right now to think of anything else.
Tony is IMO the best drummer in the world today. Completely mind blowing.
Switch it up to something like 13/16? Lol like it's nothing.
lol I know, he's nuts
its 13/8.
Its 15/16
To correct the folks here stating the meter, the metronome is in 13/16. He even states it at the beginning of the video, but if you think of it as 2/4+5/16, you can count it much easier, and it will line up with the metronome.
You can also think of it as 7/8
Nobody:
Metronome with Tony playing over it: "ONE ... THREE ..."
Tony: plays perfectly in sync
*Metronome has left chat*
Tony royster jr.. Making a mockery of his metronomic time signitures....WHOOOP WHOOP.
How comes we don't see more of Tony Royston Jr? He's such an enormous talent..
Yea man! Smashed it. I love watching drum solos. I wish I had taken up learning when I was a kid. 👊
"If I get lost, don't laugh" I'm not buying that. This guy never got lost.
whats funny is anyone is there to watch him preform, and he is practically practicing........so their watching him practice lol
Ur watching him practice too
Isn't playing always practice?
There’s a lot to learn from watching the best practice.
That's a *clinic, not a performance...
it's really not that bizarre, he is one of the greatest drummers in the world. I'm sure anyone would pay to watch Michael Jordan scrimmage.
3:30 is the best bit
I've seen him at the Montreal drum fest when he was 12 year old and he rocked the place , period!
To end all arguments in this comment section, he is playing in 13/16. He even says it in the beginning of the video.
I am not sure if anyone has noticed this?
misfit shut up
I'll have her in my head as my new click for now on...argh!!!
No really great job man... and ma'am! Thanks for the education and demonstration on always returning to the basics and the fundamentals of our skill set. Your a humble guy too!
Great lesson! I liked how you switched up the time signatures as examples.
That switch at 4:08 is so genius that you know he's playing on beat and it sounds like the metronome is lagging.
Who else was reminded of The Offspring's intro to 'Walla walla' when the metronome lady yelled '1 and 2 and 3 and 4'? :)
instantly ahaha
When you realize this drum kit is $5,000😭
Sam Slade have a listen to the 2Box Drumit 5, hands down the best sounding electronic kit. all tones on the 2box are recorded from acoustic kits.
I had a roland td6v (upgraded to TD-12 for use of vh-11 and positional sensing) trigger the software EZdrummer or superior drummer (one is advanced version) through midi DIY mesh head triggers, not much different if at all than what a lot of people do with their td30s, can do all this for around a grand w/ used roland cymbal pads (VH-11 hi hat 3zone 12" ride 2 cy8 crashes and DIY dualzone trigger drums (get worn out toms for cheap/free) just wanted to share would have saved me a good bit of cash if i knew this from the start lol,
Yeah i feel broke haha
I worked at Sam Ash and we had one. It was a pleasure to be able to play on that thing lol. Would take it over most acoustic kits out
drummer bwoii 2box > Roland td-30 (at sounds level)
I remember when TR Jr. popped up 14 years ago. He is still one of the greater drummers today.
Theres no room for improvement in you Tony you just create another realm when you play. Beyond comprehension
Thumbs up if you nodded your head in disbelief
There should have been a foot cam
god i wish i could see his delicious sweaty feet pressing against those dirty pedals until one of his shoes comes flying off revealing his perfectly shapen toes with toenails at the perfect length, not too short, not too long, just long enough for me to slide my tongue under his toenails and lick them clean
Over rated ???? no way this kid is a Beast so what if he chooses to groove in 4/4 it matters not, he can play everyinch of his kit in whatever meter you throw at him.
thank you
patrick jaroch worf
Well he's just not doing anything unique. That's what I like
Yea but hes not playing basic anyway so it dint matter.. hes simply a beast
Okay then try to play 13/16 in 4/4 haha
Awesome sense of time.. Amazing player.. 🙏
This 100% connection with the drum set...you and the instrument are one.
