      Make a deal with whoever you live with. Like say if you pass all your classes with a B+ or something like that you can get the animal. It's how I worked out getting a snake. My grandma despises snakes as well, but still getting one if I keep up my end of the deal.

      Grayce Kovarik my mom is absolutely terrified of snakes to the point to were if she can't run away from it she will beat you and the snake with whatevers near her until it's gone and she said that when I move out and have a snake she won't visit unless it's in another room with the door locked. She's gotten a bit better about being in the same room as a snake (ie pet stores) but she won't get anywhere near them unless she doesn't know they are there. I'm still working on convincing her to try to get over her fear but once something's in here mind it's really hard to convince her otherwise.

      Grayce Kovarik It’s actually great that you want one now, even if you can’t get one. Be sure to study up and find the breed you want. Save, save, save up as much money as you can. Then, when you eventually graduate high school and find your own place, you’ll be fully prepared! Well, at least that’s what I did.

    If you buy a used tank that already has a lid, make your own hides and decorations, it can be fairly inexpensive. I got fake plants from the dollar tree, used a plastic planter from the dollar tree, and buy generic Aspen bedding from Walmart. My bowl is a small casserole dish from a thrift store and was only $2. Be creative, as long as it is safe for your reptile. Also made my beardie a hide out of a cheap wicker basket. Love your videos, got some good corn snake advise from you. Take care.

    For me with my snakes you have the initial setup and enclosure cost of $100-$400 on top of the cost of the snake. Then for monthly cost you have about $10-$20 per snake. Also if you plan on getting a snake (or any other animal), save up and store away a good chunk of change for vet bills. Snakes are exoctic pets so you need to see an exoctic vet meaning they cost more on average. It is irresponsible to get a pet that you can not afford medical treatment for if something happens. Call the vet that you plan on using and ask for some quotes on cost for the common problem snakes experience then for me I save up one and half times the cost of the most costly problem.

    • @kaylakurosaki4873
      @kaylakurosaki4873 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      CrazyIrishMedic and make sure you call around vets for the best price when I got my Bobo from his previous owner it was a total of $110. $65 for a visit and $45 for antibiotic shots. Cheapest exotic pet price I have found and not only that but they know their stuff too which is a huge bonus.

    I live in the U.K, there’s quite a lot of reptile keepers over here. The most popular and easiest to find enclosure over here is wooden Vivariums with glass sliding doors. They are actually really easy to maintain.
    They have ventilation at the top back and have slots for wires like thermostats. It’s kinda the only option here in the U.K. as it’s weirdly hard to find exo terra glass enclosures.
    Unfortunately they are pretty expensive 😣
    The lengths we go for our pets am I right? 😂

    I think you should also consider electricity bills into the general costs of keeping a pet snake. I was calculating a bit, depending on the heating source it varies a lot, but if you have several snakes and live in a colder climate/ older house/ it might go up considerably, if it is a snake, that prefers it a lot warmer than your room temperature.
    Super helpful video, that would be the only thing i'd like to add!

    So as a recent buyer 20 gal are usually around 80-100 which is perfect if your just starting out and don’t have a thousand dollars to just drop on the hobby. 2 hides would be about 30$ for the max and probably 10-15 for a water bowl big enough for your snake to soak in and I tried to go bigger so I won’t have to buy more stuff in the future kinda like buying slightly bigger shoes and growing into them. I used coconut fiber substrate which was 9.99 a bag that was enough to cover 2 inches on the bottom and still have some left over. Also you can go on eBay and find cheaper lights that use less power but still have the heat from the day light and uvs from the night light and it’s around 40$ for that and if you want to decorate your tank probably add 50 max for some moss and a log or something to put in the middle to make it where it’s not just baren. They need room to grow but they like it to fit just right so I recommend if you get the 20 gal or bigger to make sure you get plenty of decorations. It costed me around 250$ for the initial setup with food and everything else. And with the snake around 300$ for set up food and a beautiful ball python that’s my baby. I only made this comment to verify your estimates were pretty damn accurate. I’d say spot on but every situation and person is different.

    Gr8 free hide; broken large decorative pots. If you see one broken at a big box store, they will usually give them away. Glazed pots look better but unglazed holds more moisture. The rough interior of a well made pot is nice for scratching too. My Ball, Sulley, has a pot hide & a fake log hide too.

    Hi,
    I would really suggest you to build an enclousure by your self! If you do it out of OSB its really cheap. I did build 2 of mine by myself and its not that hard and it makes a lot of fun. Whats positiv too is that those OSB it isolate a lot better than glas, so your power costs go down a lot. And because it's out of wood you can install anithing you want a lot easier than in a glas tank, because you can drill holes into it etc. So for a big tank thats like 150cm x 80cm x80cm with glasfront you spend around 50 to 100€. If you have any questions on how to build it you can ask me or just watch youtube videos like I did :D

    Can you please explain the difference between a terrarium and aquarium, and which one is better for snakes (specifically BP)?

    • @thebluewolf2472
      @thebluewolf2472 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aquarium holds water (best suited to turtles and fish). Terrariums hold a small amount of water/substrate at the bottom of the tank, and open from the front instead of the top. I would suggest a terrarium as you can live plant it and make it look super naturalistic and it's still easy to access.

      @Honey The Mute yeah but they were asking what was better for a BP... terrariums are easier to access, and you can stack them (if they arent too heavy)
      Personally, If I had a BP (which I dont, because I'm Aussie and we can't own them, but i do own carpets) I would cover the two sides and the background with black paper so the python feels more secure. My big snakes dont require this because they aren't scared of anything. Not even my mums cats, but ball pythons are naturally more reclusive. My big babies love to see what's going on outside their tanks.

  • @StickyFeets

    Mice are cheaper than rats but rats are supposedly healthier with better fat and protein content. And adult mouse is about the same size as a rat pup so even baby ball pythons can start eating rats. If you go to expos I suggest buying the rats in bulk. Feeder source is at all Repticon shows and have a good price for frozen feeders. You can also order in bulk online too

    I got my viv and stuff 2nd hand or on sale, the setup cost in total £50 and that included everything (45x45 exo terra viv, with bg, heat mat, thermostat, etc,) I have a hamster that uses the same type of substrate so the substrate is essentially free, or about £10 every 3 months. The food is £5 per month, and the snake itsself (corn) was £40. Overall, under £100 for starting fees, and about £5-£10 per month for upkeep. This is in GBP £ not USD $, but even in USD that's still fairly cheap. The money saved will be put to getting a new, larger viv when the snake grows up. IMO, next to hamsters, they're the cheapest pets to keep.

    Everyone here, if you want to keep your budget cheap, try going on kijiji or craigslist. You can find so many aquariums and supplies for snakes there for garage sale prices(you can also adopt/buy animals on there too). I buy most of my supplies considering reptile supplies are very expensive. It's also better to go on kijiji or craigslist to buy your animals rather then going to a store. Because you're giving a reptile that hasn't got a home, a home

    I'm getting a ball python soon and was wondering if snake starter kits are good. Petco is selling an exo terra snake kit for only 135 dollars right now and want to know if it's good.

    • @jesusissad3839
      @jesusissad3839 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You'd probably have to get rid of things, swap things out for something else, and add in other things when it comes to a starter kit. I have my ball python in an exo terra 40 gallon with one cave, one zilla rock lair, repti bark and a large water dish. Take a look at what's in the kit, what you'd need to swap out and add in, and think about the size of the tank and if/when you'd need to upgrade it. Ask yourself if the cost would be worth it to you, or would you rather buy everything individually. It all depends on what you need for your snake. My setup as it is now was about $327, not including my snake.

    To be honest its amazing how little it costs especially when people with me have given snakes to re home we just got new enclosures for them and the food for the snakes isn’t all that expensive a dog or a cat needs food every day 2-3 times a day a snake is 1 mouse or chick every 10 - 12 days

    I have a corn snake who we got from a close friend after she realised she couldn’t keep a snake and she wanted him to go to trusting owners.
    When we got him he was in a tray and we were old that was what they were meant to be in. It worked well until my cat knocked it off of the side and opened the lid causing the snake to escape.
    I would say if you have any other pets, particularly cats which are known for knocking things for the fun of it, get a tank or put your plastic box in a hard to reach place for the cat. Tanks are heavier and stay in place meaning the cat cannot move it.

    Do the under tank heating pads burn things? I know its a stupid question but will it cause a fire hazard if I put it on carpet? Or wood? I watched the tank set up video and I still dont quite understand. I understand where it gets placed, but will it damage anything or cause any risks?

    I don't have a snake, but I do take my leopard gecko for a check up with an exotic vet once a year. It comes out to about $75 a visit for her wellness exam and poop sample. She is my only reptile (for now) so it is not that bad. If you do have a lot of reptiles I would still recommend sending a poop sample to an exotic vet once a year just to get a screening. My vet has this done every six months (once again, I only have one reptile and live with someone with a weak immune system) and it's about $30. It's just a good way to make sure they don't have any internal parasites or the evil salmonella (sarcasm).

    Petco I'm fine with for supplies or pet grooming. Plus if you raise demand for services and drop it for pets than money will shift accordingly.
