I loved Nell Carter. While she had recognition, I don't think she ever had the praise she deserved as an actress, a singer, and a human being. This video shows how skillfully she could work a lyric and an emotion. Gorgeous performance of this song.
Watching on TUBI TV right now. Nell singing “Amazing Grace” at her father’s funeral & singing “I Can Lat Go Now” were my two favorite performances from this show. Her performing “Mean To Me” in “Ain’t Misbehavin’ “ is my most favorite. Nell Carter had such an amazing, beautiful & unique voice. So heartbreaking it has been silenced for so long now.
I had absolutely no idea she could sing!!! She nailed that song. That is so sad her true talent was hidden. And you are so right her talents didn’t shine. Makes me sad and so glad to find this song done by her.
I remember laying across my mother's bed, while we watched this show. She loved Nell Carter. I was around 11 or 12 years old. It stays with me to this day. It is so fitting of my life right now. I've listened to Michael's, Dionne's, but this version with Nell just takes me there.! Music can be healing!
Nell Carter went through so much during her time on Earth. The Most High saw fit for her to only share her talent with us for a short period. I love this version she did of an already beautiful song. Gimmie me a Break is in my personal top 10 of Favorite TV Shows because of her!
One of the most beautiful songs ever written and recorded by the legendary Michael McDonald, performed and interpreted masterfully here by Nell Carter for live television in ONE TAKE. Lord, what a talent she was!
Nell Carter was an enchanting and alluring Singer/Actress with great musicality and a unique timbre to her voice .She should have recorded more .the voice was choice !
I love me some Nell Carter.. A wonderful singer gone too soon but never forgotten in the hearts of families growing up in the 80's. A voice to be remembered & cant be imitated.
Nell Carter you did an excellent job of Michael McDonald "You Can Let Go Now. No one should give this a thumbs down but every one has there opinion .U are TRULY MISSED.
I remember when she did this song on the show the moment of silence after she closed the piano. I was in my 20s. Now 40 + years later i still tear up when i hear her sing this
Pure Talent that wasn't recognized enough not enough she was also a beautiful lady as well. I'm glad that they always let her sing on the show. I wish she had gotten to do more.
Nell was such a lovely lady. It was so sad hearing about her passing back in the day. My family and I loved her. She was an adorable person and fantastic actress and singer. I hope she's eternally peaceful. ❤❤❤🕊️🕊️🕊️
To the man who was my BFF, and who I will love forever.. You passed away unexpectedly and way too soon in your life...The grieving is difficult, but you're worth it because, grieving is love. I'm still trying to live without your wit, your smile and laughter and your loving and caring ways.. Rest in Peace you wonderful man you.. I will love you forever...
That’s what i loved about nell carter….. when she would sing a song, it was like she was reliving memories….gone to soon.I miss you……and thanks for the memories 🔥🔥🔥
I love her so much and I miss her all the time. I wonder sometimes if she only knew how adored she was, would she still be with us...? On the other hand...can’t really blame God for wanting her upstairs as soon as possible. She was a truly remarkable woman with more gifts to offer than we ever deserved. ❤️💋⭐️😘
Yes, it's truly sad that she had such a rough life but she is in a better place now. However, I wish God gave her a little more time to be with us. I fucking love Nell! She was a badass and her singing has brought tears to my eyes.
Just Nell and a Piano. Unbelievable. So many great recordings she left behind. Listen to her live, singing "Mean To Me". The talent is real and deep- and not recognized as she deserves...agree with other comments.
What a gorgeous talent Nell Carter was. I was a teenager when GAB was on tv, and it was a favorite. Never knew how good I had it, growing up in the 80s.
2 ppl can look at the same pic/listen to the same song n each see/hear something different....neither opinion is right or wrong they are just two different opinion...i am not the one person who voted thumbs dwn... i loved gimmie a break n think the show and nell carter were underrated...nell carter can clearly sing and is a confident singer....her voice has never done anything for me and her singing this song does even less...someone who disagrees shld not become insulted and go on the attack just take the opinion for what it is...
When my husband left me after 26 years of marriage, I'd numb the pain with alcohol, and this song came later and I couldn't stop listening to it, i still cry, but i can let go now. 😞
Sometimes I come back to watch this vid … and unlike it just so I can hit like again … it speaks to me every time ♥️ Thank you for sharing your talent with us 🙏🏾
Nell Carter, who plays the housekeeper for police Chief Carl Kanisky on ″Gimme a Break,″ will eulogize Sweet before the start of Saturday’s episode and at his funeral the same day.
I didn't know she was going to be the original Dreamgirl Effie she left Dreamgirls to do Gimme a break instead. Jennifer Holiday mentioned it When she did the Hollywood Bowl. I can't picture anyone else but Jennifer Holiday as Effie but imagine what a different show it could have been with Nell playing Effie. Just the thought.

I agree with u 100 percent I think she was under rated
100% agree with u on that one
DrewWasMe agreed!
Very underrated
Agreed. And she left us much too soon.
One of the best singers ever didn't get enough recognition in my eyes.
She sure didn't
I agree. This brought me to tears.
When tv was worth watching. Bravo.
So true and sad

Nell's voice so full of power and emotion. She also knew how to sing and when to sing it. Music for the soul.
She was not only a stunning looking women but her natural voice wasn't recognized enough not nearly enough for her talent.
I had absolutely no idea she could sing!!! She nailed that song.
That is so sad her true talent was hidden. And you are so right her talents didn’t shine. Makes me sad and so glad to find this song done by her.
Nell is gorgeous

LOVE Nell Carter! A huge talent who never got enough recognition in my opinion. A vocal powerhouse and her singing this makes me weep!
She would just nail these songs, and yet always stay in character!
This just gave me a moment. My mom, who passed, loved this show. I remember laying across my mother's bed watching this episode.

They didn't give her glory while alive. She was a singer, actress, great mover and funny...
We won't let go of your artistry.....❤

I hear you. I was born in 71 so the 80s were my 'coming of age'. Too bad we lost Nell too soon...
I was born in 1982, I think I somewhat have a memory of mom watching this in the late 80s.
I graduated high school in the mid 80s, went away to college for two years in the mid 80s, too!

Nell Carter Was The Typical Actress That In The Era We're In ! Could Take Notes From! RIP Honey! Love You, Miss You 💘😉😘 Some Actresses Can Learn From!
I didn't know Nell Carter can play the piano. She was good.
She couldn't play. Someone else is playing the piano in the background. However, she had a set of pipes on her.
She was a very good singer!

The episode is titled "James Returns".
I posted a different recording of her doing this song on my page that is also great
Nell Carter was the best. I loved her singing. This song and ain't misbehaving on the Jake and the Fatman episode.
