  • The ideal agave, in addition to low-water and low-maintenance, won't get too large, has beautiful lines or variegations, doesn't produce a slew of offsets, is easy to garden around, and isn't a view-blocker. Renowned agave hybridizer Kelly Griffin (succulent plant development manager at Altman Plants) shows six great agaves for gardens large and small, and shares expert tips on agave care and cultivation. The six are: A. ovatifolia, A. 'Blue Glow', A. victoriae-reginae, A. titanota, A. impressa, and A. guiengola.

      You don't mention where you live, but Agave v-r is quite cold hardy (to about 12 degrees F).

    Your channel is wonderful. I'm recently got into planting Agaves. I recently planted an Agave Montana but very scared it will get out of control. I have a 20-30cm strip of white stone down the side of my driveway. Is there a particular agave you could recommend me that I could plant all along the strip, say 10 of, and they stay small/within the strip? Also, non-pup forming would be preferred. Thank you! Maybe the Queen Victoria agave?
    P.S. I live in the UK, in the South where we only have a few days of frost in the winter. The soil here is thick clay and is usually very wet when I di down especially because I put anti-weed layers on top.. I try to put stones in when planting. Anything else you'd recommend?

    • @QueenofSucculents
      @QueenofSucculents  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like you're doing everything right. Agave montana is a good choice. Queen Victoria agaves might not make enough of a statement, they're small and take forever to grow to, say, soccer-ball sized.

    Does Kelly know that many european garden centers sell his famous unique Agave "Blue Glow" under the name "Shaka Zulu" (which has nothing with agaves)?

    I have the Agave Americana Marginata I just bought it and I am concerned with it in the location I want it and I don't want to keep moving the potted plant around. It is in full sun and we get 110-115 summers here. Summer here is basically a 3 month storm. How can I protect my beautiful plant from sunburn, monsoon, and root rot from water. It is in a 10 gallon plastic planter with 5 drills holes at the bottom and sit in its 2 inch high leg planter so the bottom is not touching the ground. Any help would be great. A neighbor has a blue century that gets full afternoon sun in the ground and has burnt leaves on the late afternoon sun side. Just for an example of my Southern Nevada environment. Would you suggest a filtered sun canopy for the summer in the middle of my yard. No tree coverings or shade at all is there. Currently has a green garden cloth staked around the four corner.

      @QueenofSucculents  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A "filtered sun canopy for the middle of the yard" sounds essential, given what you deal with. Keep in mind that there's only so far you can go with "zonal denial" (trying to get plants to grow out in the open in your area, if they're not suited).

    I just discovered yesterday that my largest agave is infected by the snout weevil. I completely freaked out seeing all those wiggling maggots and hearing the noise of them chewing on my agave. First time in my life seeing so many maggots it was pretty much dooms day scene. I have a big bunch of agave all gathered together. What do I do? Watch them die one by one?

    • @QueenofSucculents
      @QueenofSucculents  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dig up and destroy the infested agave and as much soil as you can. Then treat the remaining agaves with a systemic insecticide amzn.to/2DuUO2q. See details on my site, debraleebaldwin.com/debra-lee-baldwin-news/agave-snout-weevil-prevention-treatment/.

    Question: I want an agave as a centerpiece plant/ security for a window. I have a spot that’s 4’x4’ with outside plumbing running under it.
    Which agave do you recommend if any?
    I live in North Texas so you have some idea of the general climate.

    He said to fertilize an agave, but when? Early Spring or throughout the year? What kind of fertilizer?

    • @QueenofSucculents
      @QueenofSucculents  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Succulents in general appreciate a balanced fertilizer, diluted half strength, at the start of the growing season, which for agaves is early spring.

    what part of san diego does Kelly live?

    • @QueenofSucculents
      @QueenofSucculents  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      About five miles inland from the coast. Kelly was no dummy when it came to selecting the perfect climate: not too foggy and damp, not too hot or cold. Temperature range about 40 to 90, I'm guessing. Anyway, nearly ideal.
