Thanks so much. I spent 2 hrs trying to figure out why my brush was not working with my layer masks and all I had to do was reset the Brush tool. SMDH!!! THANK YOU!!!!!
Thank you for the tutorials. Unfortunatly I have tried all of your sugestions including reseting all tools. Since they upgraded to 2022 my brush will not work at all. Any idea why?

I'm not able to figure out why when painting inside a selected areas often end up with faded areas near the edge of the selection. It seems the painted edges somehow fades out foer sme reason.. When I try to fill in the selected area, the paint is not dense. I can't seem to fill it in. Another issue, sometimes when painting inside a selected area, the paint oversprays outside the selection. I run into these issues often.
THANK YOU, I have issue all the time with healing tool not working. It just smears. I had not thought of reseting. I rarely use this program but I have this issue each time. I can now fix it. I would hug you if I could. This is so simple no one addresses it. It just takes one tiny detail to drive you crazy.
Brendan great tutorial on brushes... i was hoping to find a solution of my problem with brushes. I can't get the stroke thumbnail in the options bar to appear after having chosen the brush. Any suggestions? thanks

Great tips! However, my brush tool still isn't working. I have a new hue/saturation level created and usually I can change the color of things with that. But for some reason, it still isn't working after resetting and checking the opacity.
My issue seems to be that, as I draw, every tool defaults to the mouse arrow and refuses to function. Zoom and brush were the first ones I noticed. I found no trigger and no fix other than saving the canvas, exiting and repoening the file. Cant seem to find anyone talking about this
can you tell me why brush heads up display is not opening when i am clicking the shift+alt+right click , i am using windows , and when i am changing the brush hardness , size using the shortcut key it cannot show the red preview even though the preview color is setup in preferences thanks for advance
I have turned the cops lock on and off several times, but unfortunately the little cross don't dissapair, the Circle doesn't come back... I just reset the brush, WOW, it worked. You Have solved my problem Brendan. Bless you! Laszlo Montreal Photog.
Sometimes my brush just straight up doesn’t lay down what I draw. I try to do lineart and it’s like it just goes “nope” and lays down points instead, like it isn’t picking up the whole stroke. I have no idea if the program is lagging or if something else is wrong, I’ve reset the brush settings over and over again and the problem persists, but every solution online is “reset brush settings”. Between this and my cat walking back and forth across my keyboard I’m about to snap
Hey my brush does not respond to softness. Whatever softness I select from the top menu it just paint with 100% without and soft edges. Cant you please find some solution to it.
Have you checked the brush type you are using? Perhaps you have a preset selected for your brush. Try just clicking on the soft round brush option in the brush panel. Hope that helps.
Hi Brenden I watched your video but I didnt see a solution to my brush issue. Maybe you can help? My heeling brush tool puts a copy of the image I'm working on top of the image and when the cursor is on the image and my mouse button depressed it just moves the image around the screen. If I do the Alt plus click it just locks the cursor on the image. It changes the original image while its underneath the copy. this of course gives me know idea of what the effect is until I close the tool and look at the original image. No one I have talked to can duplicate the issue. Tool resets and preference resets do nothing to fix this issue. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
For some reason, my brush is only showing settings such as wet, load, flow, etc but not the opacity setting. I've tried resetting my brush, but it still is not working. How do I make the opacity setting show up again?
After 20 years of edditing my black&white marker drawings in Photoshop, the pensil/brush is depending on pressure of the pen. So it begins light gray instead of solid black what I need. How do i reset this?
Brendan, the red dot doesn't appear at all. I can see the outline circle for the size, but the opacity one doesn't show. Can you help me? I've done everything ( even reseted the brush tool to it's default), but nothing solved the issue for me. Thanks!
The red dot only shows up using a keyboard shortcut. So your brush tool isn't broken. On mac the shortcut is OPT+CONTROL+CLICK/DRAG while PC is ALT+Right Click+ Drag I believe (may be alt+windows or alt+control with the right-click, not 100% sure since I'm a mac user.) While clicking and dragging, go side to side for brush opacity and up and down for brush size. While using this shortcut the red brush showing opacity will appear. Otherwise, it won't show up.
At 3:10 the black brush appears to be a rough-edged solid black surrounded by airbrushed black. I'm experiencing that and can't figure out why (just downloaded PS 24). Colors seem to be fine. Any idea what's up?
I'm having an issue with the brush tool: when I click and hold the mouse, it only registers the first click. So if I want to use the brush tool, I have to keep clicking individually and it's basically not usable... I just updated to PS v 23.1 and it fixed it!
Hi, I have a problem with my brush stroke.. For example, I have 1 brush that strokes strong and smooth line that i've used it for a years. But now it only strokes like 50% opacity and if i press it harder it only got bigger instead if 100% stroke. This problem affected all my brushes and it really frustating. I’m using a gradient map layer to change a color shirt and I use the mixer brush to color it in- my problem “ could not use the mixer tool because the content of the layer is not directly editable” what am I doing wrong?
After using Photoshop for a while, when I select a tool, I cannot change the brush tip to a newly selected brush tip. It seems like the "previous" tip is cached in memory. No matter how many times I select a tool, when I go to use it, the tip reverts to the one I wanted replaced. I see "solutions" for older versions of PS, but not the most recent. To solve, I have to close PS. When I restart it, I have no problem until time passes and the problem reappears.

Hey! I am having an issue with the brush tool working with the layer mask, can you please help me with this? Hmm that seems odd. Does the brush still paint at least the way it should? I have experienced that with some brush packs where the cursor is messed up but the brush still operates fine

My brush cursor looks like the path selection tool/regular Windows cursor and is not working at all. Anyone know a fix for this? Windows 10, Photoshop 2021 using Wacom Intuos. I'm not having this issue in macOS so I think it may be a windows related bug, or a Photoshop bug/issue in windows. My only workaround is saving my work, quitting, and reopening photoshop, super frustrating because it happens very frequently, like every few seconds when I am brushing stuff.

How about this....the brush paints in "dissolve" mode...yet nothing is set to that feature in the layer or the brush settings. I reset the brush settings to factory mode.....and it's STILL happening. What's the deal?

I bought a new laptop with fairly gud specs i7 4th gen, 16gb ram ,256ssd, 512hdd, 6mb cache but my brush is super slow. Like i tried keeping the usable ram to 90% with no opened chrome or any other apps but its still slow its not normal. Plus the select n mask brush tool is also so slow. It makes things impossible to work with. Can someone help me in this .

When i am using my pen tablet and start painting horizontally the brush goes vertically and vice versa, what's the problem?

Make sure the mask is selected by clicking on it, then get your brush tool and paint on the canvas with black and that layer/layer mask selected.

It sounds like you need to use a layer mask. Without one, the brush tool only paints color onto your canvas

You have the clone stamp tool selected if thats the error you receive. Press B to access the brush tool.

damn, this is exactly what i needed! i was changing the background brush colour instead of foreground.

Did u choose the “soft round brush” option from the brush panel? Ive had a similar thing where I was just using a different brush than I thought.
