I have been shooting for 61 years from full bore rifles and pistols to all kinds of air rifles. I have the walther century varmint. One of the best springers I have ever owned. Under powered. Across my chrono without going into any fancy ballistics my rifle was too darned close for comfort. It is smooth and with my Finnish vaime silencer very quiet and no spring twang. I love this walther.
Thank You! Although shot a lot of interesting kit from bull pups to pcps in the last couple of months. This is one spring barreled air rifle Will Stick With!!! (Okay has Faults-Heavy/cumbersome). She has a name Marion Conundrum V
interesting comments on scopes and losing zero. My thought for what it's worth is this could be due to the actual power of the gun. I've found that air guns with a reasonable recoil will throw the scope of sooner or later depending on mounts.
Good update video !! I had scope mount probs too until I got sports match mounts, trying the one piece dampa mount now . Peace of mind! Also 6x42 scope is considered to be best match for our eyes.
Hello Shooting and Outdoor Channel. Thankyou for your reply. I hope I'm not offending anyone with my opinion as a beginner. My opinion is, I love the lock up, breach workmanship on the LGV. However, I think it's very disappointing the LGV was firing at only 8ft lb and had to have a HW 80 piston seal fitted to bring it up to the expected power. In all honesty, I don't think we should have to buy tuning kits either. The rifles should leave the factory as good as they can be. You wouldn't buy a new sports car and then notice the engine wasn't tuned. If that happened, I'd demand a full refund and return it. It shouldn't be where you buy something that should be all bells and whistles, and then have to take it in your garage or on your kitchen table, meat pie in one hand, sausage roll in the other, and make it what it should have been at purchase.
It's a common gripe...and to a point I agree. 12ftlb is not a power target as you get with say a car. It's a limit so I can be 1 ftlb and still be sold as a 12ftlb airgun. However...and this where I sympathise with you...no modern sub 12ftlb airgun should be under 10.75 ftlb. Realistically anywhere between 11 & 11.9999999 is acceptable in all calibers. I think with an 8.44gn .177 theres 35fps difference between 11 and 11.9999999 ftlb which....a lot of cheap PCPs struggle to hit...and some expensive ones for that matter. .22 is only around 25fps difference. Would you notice? Probably not. A lot of manufacturers use terms like full power to get around it but what does that mean when your only target is to be under XX ftlb? Luckily we generally have good RFDs who will swap them out such as Solware etc. But...I do think there should be a printed chrono cert to each SN# of every gun sold. They must test them in house so what's a sheet of A4 going to do to the price???
hi there racerkart , have just brought my walther lgv master pro wow what a rifle going to take a while to learn to shoot it has good has you have done it in the past but not with the likes of walther . Will keep you posted how things go .
Please do...I would have gone the LGV or U as they are very good quality and the technology is also bang up to date. I also purchased a Walther again and once the software is update for my videos - I'll be putting up the initial review. Stay safe and shoot straight mate.
alright mate,, I was wanting to get this gun,but I don't think I should have to go through all this with a new rifle, pity, it is a great rifle, am looking for a full power reasonable price .22, am just not up to the mods, new,old shooter,,cheers Stu...
paper is still good for charts, i have some fancy charts i created but went back to paper on a lot of videos, good to see 10 shot groups, that is how i zero many of my rifles for 25 yards since i shoot at a fixed distance, on low velocity rifles i sacrifice a flat trajectory so i can reach at 25 yards with a loopy trajectory, for example my daisy 840 shoots a 7.0 grain wad cutter at 275 fps that gets out to 25 yards, its a smooth bore gun and does about 3 inch groups or a little under but typical for a air gun with low velocity and no rifling, shure is fun to see it get out to 25 yards despite its very low velocity
Thanks Libracory - Stay tuned on the pellet section mate...I have taken your advice and pleased to say it worked very well in the upcoming video. I like 10 shot groups for the reviews also as if you chrono a rifle (or pistol) you generally run 10 anyway to get a good idea of fps spread. Cheating if you don't match it...
Very useful review and there is no way i would buy one of those!! Only 8ftp and then lots of fiddling and expense to make it do what it should already do from the box. It will be an hw80 or 95 for me.
I don't know if this is just indicative or this particular model, but the LGU and the LGV are not and never have been only 8ft/lb out of the box, they all do 11 to 11.6ft/lb I know this because I have worked on friends rifles when they have asked me to degrease them from the factory lube and put the good molly stuff in.
Brilliant video and like your style-Bare Bone facts! Learned a lot especially scope mount and piston seal upgrade HW 80 + spring info. The only thing I have changed so far is the scope mount to a single rail and yes it has made a Difference. As to the latter two improvements sounds cheap but Don't have access to such facilities and to get it looked at/done will would have to be professionally - it all boils down to cost - is an extra 1.5ft/lbs worth it??? SMILES =re pellets am walking into a minefield totally unprotected! I prefer .177 and used to swear by JSB's all grains up to 12 but recently am converted to H & N baracuda hunter extreme & hornet + polymag short although this air rifle seems to accept Any pellet with varying levels of accuracy. Last But not Least why don't you do a video on air rifle maintenance + cleaning!!! A boot lace with a couple of knots tied in the end dipped in motor oil motor works for me (ONLY JOKING). Worth considering?! Cheers Vince!
Hi Vince we may look further into maintaining airguns as I have damaged at least one barrel in my time. As for tuning, try and track down Lyn Lewington...He did my AR1 Remington and was going to do some Century work for me but that never materialised. stay safe.
Hi Vince - If its underpowered then chances are the seal is not sealing correctly which seemed to be an issue on the Century not captured in the first video. The fix for this was very simple which was to swap the seal (push fit) for an HW80 seal for £14. This brought the power to 11.4fpe from 8fpe. To go FAC means a new spring and a lot of paperwork - I have had the talk with Armex recently on going FAC. Still...at 11.4fpe on the 13/4/2017 (last week) I had this rifle smashing clays one after the other at 100y on the fixed power scope (now a 6x44 AO basic nikko mil dot equivalent). We took a small grouping and found the 5 shot group well inside 2.5" (diameter of a coke can)...if i have the target I'll put it on the facebook page.
Cracking videos and like your style Sir - No Bullshit! Did my homework, the Walther century is an unsung Hero. Bide your time and be prepared to travel I picked up a bargain inc carry case and silencer (care to differ on that score with you). Only thing I changed and agree with you is changing the two to single rail scope mount. Swear by JSB pellets but tend to gravitate to H & N extremes or hornet + polymag shorts. Hope you had a good Xmass & New Year. Cheers Vi
Hello Sir, Thankyou for your video and advice. I was wondering, how does this Walther compare with Weihrauch HW 97 and 80? To a beginner like me, they look similar and the Walther takes the same piston seal as the HW 80l. I noticed the Walther, with the lever seems to have much better lock up with the small lever at the fore end. It looks fantastic engineering, and zero tolerances too. Is the Walther on a par? Thankyou, Ian.
I still have this rifle actually and it's had some parts swapped. So out the box the Century trigger is worse than the rekord...but an LGU/V trigger is a direct swap and around £15 from rotherlys and better than a rekord when set properly. At that point the Century is better than the 80 easily. The 97 has the same style of internals (guided piston) so like for like. However the 97 piston is smaller and lighter so less bucking and kicking in the firing cycle. That said...the wood Century is a heavy beast and absorbs the extra kick. Then there's cost...century is a bargain at this point. Down range using a suited pellet...nothing in it. They should all shoot drawing pin head groups at 40y on a balmy summer night.
LGV or LGU is a better rifle but only just to be fair, if you set the trigger unit up right or polish the internal parts in the trigger unit and you like the long first stage the rifle is second to none. I polished the internal trigger unit and set it up with a Rowan engineering match trigger and it just makes this rifle my best ever springer that I have ever had, and I have had all the HW's and AA's in their springer range. This Walther LGV is just mind blowing on the accuracy, it is like having a PCP in your hand, I am not exaggerating.
hw 80 seal ? where do you fit it. I've just brought 2 of this guns. one is 11.4 for the other is about 9fp any videos showing replacement of seals cheers Andy
I was told that Umarex had stopped making the wooded stock variant around a year ago, and this may now be the case. If so only do the synthetic stocks will be available now. Interestingly if your UK based...Solware still have them up on their web page...maybe worth a call.
hi there racerkart will be getting this rifle sometime this week from solware just wanted to know is the scope on it good enough for the garden, wont be no more than 30 metres max for target shooting and possible hunting in the future also is it worth getting a sound moderator to keep people near by happy and none the wiser if so is there any particular one you use that's quiet enough . Many thanks and keep up the good videos Steve
Hi Steve - Firstly...Thanks for the comments. On this rifle I don't use a moderator at all. I did put a few shots through with the Weihrauch silencer and it eliminated the muzzle blast, however the action is always going to be something you have to live with. Also the crack from the pellet on the target (meaty type) will usually scatter any targets nearby. So for me it was garden addon onl. The scope is fine for bunny bashing out to 40y accurately and 30y is towards the top end but not the max for shooting groups at a 5mm dot. The only downside is the 30/30 duplex reticule - could use a mildot. I still use mine out to 60y every Thursday on the supplied scope and it still hits shotgun cartridges (spent) at that range. As for Solware...Bill and Carl are great and the Weirauch silencer is the cheapest i have come across from them (£49.95 at Rugby gunshop and nearly £70 everywhere else). Also may be worth looking at getting a copy of Airgun Shooter (pocketmags.com) from Dec 2015 and Jan 2016 (i will confirm the issues for you) Lyn Lewington does a stripdown and rebuild of one.
hi racerkart a BIG thank you for replying so quickly and putting my mind at ease about which rifle to buy and everything you said about it was very encouraging to know I am going to get a good rifle for the price and will be going to solware this week to buy it, not sure to get a bench rest for it or the sand bag rest but will be getting a sound moderator for it to keep the wife happy and the neighbours too .Solware is only about 2 miles from me and like you said there very good at what they do and give you great advice and show you the same kind of product at different price ranges to show you what you can get for your money. So I say again thankyou so much for your advice and keep up the great videos will be letting you know how I get on with it . Steve
Hi, Just bought one of these rifles (influenced by your review and a few others) and as I'm new to airgun shooting I was wondering if you could tell me the best pellet you have now used with the rifle for indoor target shooting? Cheers Ian
Hi Ian, certainly can...I use Daystate Rangemaster Sovereigns for indoor/ outdoor shooting. It also shot well with JSB Exacts, Falcon Accuracy Plus and the secret pellet I found was Air Arms Diabolo Match!!! Keep watching the channel mate. We have our first project rifle underway and shooting footage for that as we speak. We've also just recently set up a facebook page @racerkartsrifles that'll get all our 'unedited' shooting videos and photos on it. Get on there and have a nose round mate.
Many thanks for the reply - will try the Daystate's next. The gun shop recommended a tin of RWS Superdome so I'll compare them against these. Just actually back from the first shooting of the Walther Century at an indoor range and really pleased with it and the 6x42 scope supplied in the kit. I'll check out the facebook page later in the week. Thanks again - at £5-10+ a tin I'd be gutted if whatever I bought performed worse than the last brand!
I will my HW 77k in .177 sattle a bid down be couce 17 fpe for that short rifle ( evan with 13 gr. pellets) shooting too hot !! I´l go down to 12 fpe!!!
At 17ft/lb. I would be very surprised if you'll find it settle down to 12ft/lb. Assuming your in the UK (because you want to get below 12ft/lb.), then It should not have been sold to you like this without an FAC if it was new...so I'm suspecting that it is second hand. If that's correct then I also suspect the spring is either preloaded or has been replaced with an incorrect spring from something else by a previous owner. The only other solution is what chronograph you are using? Is it new or old?
In Norway we don´t have restrictions in power. I bought it new in Germany and let it tuned up from a gun smith he put in another spring from Weihrauch. So actually it is original! Accuracy is great but a lot of recoil . I think I will buy a kit from V-Mach in sub 12 fpe. Do you know some one else who sell such kits? Thanks
You shouldn’t have to use parts from another gun manufacturer to improve the one you bought , definitely will never buy one of these for sure ,, cheers Shane uk 🇬🇧

Stay Tuned Stephen...were doing a scope diagnosis episode next year.

I had one, I used the supplied scope and faced no issues. It was just a nice shootin', heavy-as-lead, pellet gun.
Excellent 2nd review. Now, if they just sold them with the mods' done....... :-) Best wishes, Phil

My Century likes Webley Acupells best followed closely by Air Arms Field 4.52 then RWS Superdomes.
