Welcome to Dual Sport bikes, Tristan. The BDRs are great. You did great for a first timer. I know it can be intimidating to start off. I’m so glad you enjoyed it. I also have a Yamaha 250, a WR250R. I’m looking forward to seeing more two wheel adventures from you (I really enjoyed your scooter videos too).

When you come to a rough, steep gully crossing, slow down and learn to feather your clutch with and use your legs as outriggers. No need to blast thru those places. That bike can handle creeping along rough areas. If you're unsure of the terrain just slow down.

Nice to see a fellow Wyomingite producing some content on this beautiful state, just try not to reveal too much ;). I tried taking that road in my 4runner a couple months ago, got a flat tire within 200 yards getting off the pavement lol. Maybe next year, cheers!

Weird people would say not to share too much but America or lots of it is PUBLIC LAND. Meaning everyone can enjoy these areas but pack im what you bring. Let's leave these places the way we came in. Don't litter people. Let's be good stewards of what we still have.

The problem is that people tend to focus on what is familiar. If an area has been “endorsed” by someone they trust online, then more people are likely to go there and use the resource. Even public land can have access shut down or restricted if it gets damaged by overuse. For example, the BLM recently closed around 300 miles of popular off road routes near Moab. The only way you can access them now is if you are able to hike in the desert or if you are rich enough to use a horse.

Great adventure, I don't think you're in over your head my friend. We have to be willing to try new things . But just remember safety first , respect the motorcycle and respect the land you ride it on. Most people these days are distracted by cell phones so be careful out there & never assume they see you . Happy
trails 🏍️ P.S. As a seasoned rider let me give you some advice, keep both hands on the bars when the bike is in motion ! That gravel your on is incredibly unstable. If you go down , that gravel will chew you up & spit you out . I know this from experience.

I loved this video Tristan! Based on my many years of dirt-biking and dual-sporting, I can tell you that you have opened a new chapter of life that you will love and not regret! I quit when I reached age 74 and now only ride street bikes (I ride a Harley PanAmerica-same as the guy you rescued). It really got my juices flowing to watch this video and I will be right there with you on all your future videos like this.
I have two suggestions: consider a Honda CRF 450X. This was the best of all the many dirt bikes I owned. And, secondly, develop a riding partner to go with you on rides to remote areas. Don’t do it alone. I know that’s not your style, but believe me, at some point in the future some event or circumstance will occur where you will absolutely need help (like the guy you rescued).
Keep going man! I think you are hooked already. I will be vicariously experiencing each adventure with you and wishing I were young again.
Oh, one last comment: try off road geocaching. I found plenty of off-road caches and it was great fun.
    Best wishes !

I rode dirt bikes for 50 years, including dozens of off road races; great choice for a first bike, it will serve you well. My passion was, and still is, exploring the desert backcountry, now in a SxS.
My motorcycling tip - learn how to use your front brake competently, it's the most important safety control on the bike. Use it frequently, gently at first but you want to develop threshold braking (panic stops), muscle memory - you want to know where it is and how to use it when you don't have time to think. Be careful, it's a slowly developed skill but very important.

I'd learn to deal with driving 65 in a 70/75/80, rather than get a bigger bike, if you're going to be taking it places like this. If you additionally want a road bike, get one and go however fast you want. Just remember that the kinetic energy of your body goes up by the square of speed, while the energy it takes to turn you into a strawberry milkshake, remains constant.
Having fallen at 10mph, ask yourself just how much heavier a bike you want on top of you, at how much higher a speed. Bigger, heavier bikes use more fuel, so need a bigger tank, beefier mechanicals, making it even heavier, bulkier, and harder to manhandle into doing what you want.

What fun to see Tristan on a motorcycle, and finally, in the vicinity of Adobe Town! Your experience is like mine: every time I visit Adobe Town, I have it entirely to myself.
You're right, Tristan, you need to come back and concentrate on the Adobe Town Rim, where the best of the badlands are. Happily, it's a short ride from your home in Rock Springs. You could easily ride to Adobe Town, directly from home. Take your drone! I look forward to seeing your drone footage along Adobe Town Rim! The hoodoos are otherworldly!
Riding a motorcycle around the wild horses can be great fun. They are curious about motorcycles, particularly if you're alone. I once encountered a herd of wild horses on the west side of Adobe Town. I was riding slowly, and the herd came over to the road, and they cantered along right next to me, for half a mile, then crossed the road in front of me, and cantered along on the other side for a distance too.
The wild horses are one of my favorite parts of Red Desert rides!
Tristan, you missed an interesting aspect of the ruins at Fort LaClede. The rocks it is built from contain billions of fossilized snails. The rock formation they built it from was once seafloor, and the rocks formed when conditions changed in the inland sea and killed off billions of snails, which then settled to the bottom and got cemented together. If you go to rock shops in Wyoming, look for a rock called "Turritella agate." Fort LaClede is built entirely from Turritella agate.

If you are not sure, get off the motorcycle and walk the anticipated path. Maybe mud/water under the crusty soil. Maybe you see a better track a bit off the path.

Awesome that you’re exploring on a motorcycle! Since that bike does not have a kick starter if you’re not already doing this, I would recommend you carry one of those small jump starter packs. It can also work as your battery bank for your phone, etc.. Seen several people stranded that didn’t carry one when their motorcycle battery died.. I may have been one of them lol lol. Pretty hard to bump start a motorcycle in the sand.😂. Also, since you’re new to writing check out the IRC tire guy videos. Rich does a great job, explaining the fundamentals, and as a lifelong motorcycle racer, rider, the first videos I would watch, would be the ones on clutch control, slipping the clutch for slow, speed control. Look forward to future motorcycle videos from you! Maybe get your wife to ride that bike with you when you get your new one :-)

The Great Divide Basin is a self-contained area along the continental divide where waters flow neither west to the Pacific or east to the Atlantic (Gulf of Mexico). As Tristan says the waters within this region and containing the Red Desert are very saline & alkaline.
I camped and explored this area as a geologist for Cities Service in the 1970’s - just a remarkable geography!!
Once I spent 2 1/2 weeks alone surveying and staking claims and camped near a springs, waters that I would bathe with - my brown hair and beard bleached out due to the water’s alkalinity…remember it like it happened yesterday. The Oregon Buttes in the northwestern region of the Red Desert are magnificent landscapes and landmarks.
Brave of you, Tristan, to venture alone there on your bike - and rejoice 😊.

Absolutely ideal setup. What took you so long? The 250's are the smallest bike with enough horsepower to ride on interstate highways and trails. You even have knobby tires that are mitigating wipe-outs. I would get a half wind screen. And for grocery trips, I use a 17-gallon plastic storage container on the rear rack. Tie the container to the rear rack on the sides with 1/4-inch rope and a 1-inch straps and clip buckles from the center back to front. I have been doing that for years at with a fuel economy of 70 MPH. Want to sell it? Been looking for that bike.

I've got a Kawasaki klx that I've modified extensively including a 351cc big bore kit still sucks for any long distances above 65mph. The smaller bike carried on the SUV is a pretty great set up to skip the boring highways on the bike and enjoy the light weight off road.

Victoria, Tristan didnt notice the fossils, but he saw billions of them: Fort LaClede is built entirely from fossilized goniobasis snails. A change in water quality in the inland sea killed them, and their carcasses settled to the sea floor, forming a layer six to twelve inches thick. There is an outcrop of that snail layer right next to Fort LaClede, and they built the entire fort from that outcrop.

Man you are living my dream - I've been wanting to get a dual sport for a very long time. I so want a CRF300L Rally - I like that it has a bigger gas tank (eg. more range) but it 1) doesn't have great suspension 2) it's still not that fast on open freeways. To get more power you need to go up in size (and weight)...Like you, I don't like the idea of riding heavier motorcycles on trails. So much easier to explore on motorcycles than trucks/SUVs.

On most dual sport bikes, you can quickly switch the front sprocket, and change the gear ratios for riding roads or rougher trails. A second front sprocket is small and light, so its easy to carry one with your tools. On most bikes it takes only ten minutes to make the change.

Also, what helmet is that and do you like it?

I really enjoy this development on your channel!
Friendly suggestion - as your channel grows, maybe stop being too specific about your locations. (Maybe your Adventure Knowhow site only?) I’ve seen social media ruin places which were once isolated gems. Make people get out and earn discoveries.

I disagree. He should show where he is without deception. I have never seen a TH-cam adventure channel yet that doesn’t tell where they are at that anybody who makes an effort can’t figure it out pretty quick anyway.

with the influx of people around the western u.s mostly people across the border, there stealing cars, trucks, rv;s etc, and you leave your little car 4x4 in the middle of nowhere and return later for it,? ONE DAY IT WONT BE THERE,?SUGGESTION, PARK IN AN AREA SAY AGAINST A HILL AND CAMOUFLAGE THE CAR TO BLEND IN, or at least lock down the wheels with chain to the axle . i was camping in yosemite , tent camping, north hill, went out to the bathroom and 4 guys were trying to take my truck, LUCKY I CARRY A WEAPON? they fled later caught and guess what they were all BORDER PEOPLE FROM WHO KNOWS WHERE? we the viewers of your channeland we want you to be safe, there to many weird people out there, START PACKING ? CARRY YOUR GUN?'P.S. NICE BIKE BUT TO SMALL FOR ME, I RIDE AN OLDER BIKE TT500 .

Yosemite has zillions of people there. Wyoming is empty to begin with, and he goes out into the emptiest of the empty places. There's nobody there to steal anything. There are only one or two paths out. Thieves like making a quick getaway to disappear among thousands of vehicles and people. They don't like sending up a plume of dust showing exactly where they are as the only vehicle for miles around. What good is carrying a gun to protect his car, when he's on a motorcycle 30 miles away? You make no sense. Stay in your densely populated area, waiting with your gun to defend your truck from immigrants, it sounds like such a fun life. The crime rates for illegal immigrants is actually lower than for US citizens, because they want to stay under the radar and not get deported.

Congratulations Tristan and welcome to the dark side =) I had a hunch you'd be on a motorcycle in due time when I watched your scooter adventures. I ridea big 500lb ADV bike as well as a 400cc dual sport. Actually bought the dual-sport for "training" purposes and realized just how much fun they are on their own! I came rather late into off-road...been riding since the 70s but didn't start riding in the dirt until I was almost 60.
Great choice ( and good find!) of that Yamaha. Light, reliable as a hammer and nearly indestructible. Ever read "Lois On The Loose" by Lois Pryce? Great read, newbie bike rider on a small Yamaha, Anchorage to Ushuaia.
I have two pieces of advice..
    1. Hydration pack, 2L. Just makes it easier. If I carry a lot of water, I use Platypus collapsible bottles...no flavor issues.
    2. Training. Find an outfit near you that offers classes. This will really flatten your learning curve and pay huge dividends quickly.
Looking forward to watching your future 2-wheeled adventures!
