I enjoyed watching you fix this, you're really skilled and appreciate what you do for the animated building collectors. Can I use just batteries without some adaptor and cables?

On the non-animated houses, you can. Lemax used to, not sure if they still do, sell and have external battery packs (4.5vdc, 3xAA batteries), that would plug into the building or accessory. Dept. 56 uses a 3vdc (2xC batteries) for a lot of their accessories and small, lit houses.
If the house is animated, the batteries do not have enough amperage to continuously run the house.
