      Bonus tips:
      * simplicity. A simple black top. Simple black pants. And some chain- like jewelry can easily slide under the radar.
      * I used to learn to make the most of what I had. Styling regular pieces in a vaguely alternative way was my friend.
      * I used to make alternative buttons with whatever I could find or make Kandi and wear those. DIY is great for subtle alternative fashion.
      * Lastly, like they said. Wait if need be. I'm 20, almost 21. And I am just beginning to dress in a way that makes me happy. It won't be forever. I promise. Stay strong, baby bat!

I am an alt person who actually relies on diy. The videos I watch all just say "Go to the store, buy this, and add safety pins." And it's genuinely not helpful. I'm a 13 year old who is barely even allowed to wear a black shirt. I've been thrifting for 4 years now, and I have a whole hidden bin full of my crafts which I change into in the school bathroom before I go to my class. I wish there were more videos that didn't just say "Wear demonias and decorate a black hoodie!" I don't even have a black hoodie, and I wish I did. I basically have to wait until Christmas to get "edgy" clothes since red is a Christmas colour and I can cut it up and make alt accessories, etc. I have made some diy myself out of just a plain long sleeve shirt and some socks. So if anyone is as far as me in the "You can't be emo" thing, you can always try using safety pins, staples, paper clips, etc for stuff. Remember that the grunge style was made for people who couldn't afford clothes, you shouldn't have to spend 200 dollars on each outfit.

That you! I’m 13 and TINY like tiny, tiny so it’s really hard to find cute clothes. I have never thought of using safety pins to diy my old clothes, so cool! I have some cute heart paper clips I could use maybe 🧐
I hate videos that are based around damonias, I want ones really bad but according to google my shoes size is barely above what a toddler would wear 💀
I keep thinking about making videos that could be helpful to middle schoolers, if I do I will use this advice
next Christmas ima get more things I can diy
THANK YOU FOR BEING GENUINELY HELPFUL

here i have some more tips:
-wear fishnets under midi skirts. you can still maintain that edgy look without losing your m o d e s t y
-if you wear colored small net fishnets (especially with leg warmers) they will look less "sExUaL". i don't know why, just trust me. if you can't wear fishnets at all, try with ripped tights, fishnets socks or funky socks in general.
-accessories change the game. especially goggles or funky gloves completely change your outfit with no effort
-put patches on everything. they're easy to make and hella cheap. if you don't want your parents to know what the patch says, write your message in russian or in some other language that they don't understand.
-also, never underestimate scarves. they're the easiest way to color coordinate your outfit.

They already hate the fact I don't like wearing dresses and it sucks having parents that think that forcing negative things onto their child will turn me into their perfect expectation of what a child should be and not a small human that wants to explore the world and how they express themselves...

I'm 12, and I can tell you a REALLY GOOD tip: so I'm basically an art/fashion nut and my mom buys me a lot of the art supplies I want, whatever I need from Amazon and Etsy, because she loves my "creative side".
She lets me DIY whatever I want because she likes seeing me occupy my time with something that isn't my laptop, so I use the art supplies to DIY every single one of my alternative accessories! Like, I have bought NONE of my alt accessories. And I wear them to school!
I know it's not exactly easy to DIY clothes, and even I can't do it, so I take the clothes I have and fashion slightly alt outfits. Once I wore an egirl inspired outfit to school and she didn't even care because it was so mild. I even told her that it was an egirl outfit.
Slowly, with the clothes she buys for me, I'll make the intensity of my outfit go up! And its foolproof! Because I choose my own outfits, and she can't stop me... because by the time I'm 18, I'll be full alt! :D
      I hope I helped! Have an awesome day/night :'D

Here to boost the algorithm and also ask for more specific advice from anyone who happens to read this.
So I'm 18, currently with no immediate ways to leave home, and my family is hyperreligious. I've been dressing alt (particularly goth) for a while but am always looking for ways to improve (and lessen the amount of uncalled for comments from my parents about the way I look). I want to look particularly in the realm of accessorizing, making patches, and DIY in general. This is all the clothing rules I have to follow because of my family's beliefs:
    - No makeup (I can sneak on a little mascara when they aren't looking or get away with slightly tinted lip balms and lip gloss but that's about it)
    - No jewelry (weirdly they haven't said much about me adding chains and safety pins to my clothes though, which took me a bit by surprise)
    - No pants/trousers/shorts (too "mAsCuLinE" and "iMmODDesT")
    - No short skirts (aka anything above knee-length)
    - No sleeveless tops (unless layered over/under something with sleeves)
    - No cutting/dyeing hair (this one bothers me the absolute most because lately I can't stand having long hair and have been looking for ways to make it at least appear shorter, but so far nothing really works because it's too long/thick/heavy for most of the tricks people come up with. Turns out most people don't know what to do with thigh-length hair that feels like it has the weight of an infant)
I haven't tried fishnets and frankly feel scared to because tensions in my family are already high, and as a legal adult, if I go too far they might just freak out on me and kick me out. I'm caught in a weird grey area where I'm not ready to leave yet, but I don't have the protections I used to. I still want to continue branching out and experimenting with my style, but just know that I am kind of treading on eggshells here.
Something I've wanted to do for a while is start painting patches and sewing them onto my old denim skirts and jackets. Band names are out of the question (they WILL dig through their lyrics and history meticulously just to make up reasons why I shouldn't be listening to them, just trust me on that one), and anything involving """"violent imagery"""" (basically anything with blood or skulls or whatever) is a no-go. However, things like bats, sfw quotes, spiderwebs, and more surreal artsy fartsy things will get me a weird look but usually won't start any kind of conflict. Any help is appreciated.

OH and another thing I should mention is that I'm plus size (ranging from US 1X min. to 3X at max) so if anyone has links to any kind of affordable size-friendly shops that ship to the US that I can check out lemme know, I especially like finding any kind of cool studded/chain/grommet/etc. belts, they can easily add a lot to an outfit that doesn't read as particularly alt otherwise^^^

    • @cowboylikeana
      @cowboylikeana 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

you could totally get a sick look with like, a mesh top under a sleeveless top or even just sleeved shirts with cool midi/maxi skirts! if you can’t wear fishnets, regular tights that are more sheer are fun too, especially if you get different colors. and with your hair, i personally think braids would be cool, especially if your hair is long. i think the patches are a really cool idea also, denim jackets with patches are a big part of a lot of alt subcultures. best of luck with being able to dress how you want!

Mine was less of a parents not wanting me to dress in a certain way and more of just me being high waisted making everything way too short for a teenager to wear. Buy cycle shorts, I literally still to this day wear them under any short dress or skirt and they come in various lengths so you can have ones where you can't see them from underneath your skirt but they just add an extra layer of protection or you can get ones that go almost to your knees which may be a better option if your parents don't like you wearing things that are too short. I know that this is something that most people already are aware of but just in case you aren't, you're welcome x

Parents have to remember that they were young once too. I'm sure many people that are now parents experimented with clothes and accessories to create their own style. They need to let their kids do likewise. I'm alt, and if I had ever had kids, and they wanted to be alt as well, then I would have said go for it. Let's go shopping. (Jan Griffiths).

Just to give an idea of how my parents are: when i was twelve, i was only allowed to wear polo shirts.
My father absolutely hated t shirts cause he said i looked too relaxed and casual. And like. I was twelve??? You're saying a twelve year old shouldn't be relaxed????
My parents aren't that strict. They give me plenty freedom -mostly cause they have no idea what I'm doing. I'm usually in my room doing my own thing(...which is cause once i started going out more my parents locked me out of home without telling me why, and i later learned it was cause of "bad company"(she literally got all A's and the most we did together was science experiments and diy's-)
Anyways...as i was saying, my parents aren't that strict, except when it comes to two things. Music, and clothes. Manners too but they've been ingrained in me since i was small so that's not really a problem(sucks that they don't make my brothers be polite, tho). The music part is only my father. He's very particular, and his tastes are "good music" and if you deviate from it it's "bad music", and if you listen to bad music, he will comment on it ceaselessly until that song no longer brings any joy. As for the clothing part...well, the first paragraph should be explanation enough 💀

When I was a kid/teen I thought I hated fashion. This was due to most woman’s fashion available in department stores in the 00’s not being in my style. Combined with media portrayal of girls who liked fashion as being vein and stupid (most of that media probably written by sexist men) And also whenever my mom took me shopping for clothes she made it a miserable experience because she would complain all the time and call herself fat. (She never insulted my looks and even frequently complemented my looks but it made me very uncomfortable that she was putting herself down .) we also have pretty different personal styles so I didn’t always like the things she insisted looked best on me.
But when I got to college I realized that I actually love fashion! I always loved costumes, and one day I realized that costumes are clothes too, and styling an outfit isn’t that different than putting together a costume from clothes I already have. College was the first time I went shopping at a thrift store. I could buy clothes for crazy cheap without worrying about them being produced unethically and I wasn’t limited to whatever JC penny’s latest season was.

bleaching clothes (specifically black) is cool bc you can make a variety of designs and A few symbols and things you can draw on clothes or make jewelry that usually are ok: keys and locks, hands, hearts (you can make them broken or damaged for a bit more of a edgy look), stars, creepy smiles, bats, spiders, candles, sun/moons, ghosts (iffy) you can get wire and pliers from your local Walmart or most big shops like that and craft stores and just play around with bending it into shapes you like then just making a loop and putting on a chain (you can make homemade chains this way also) you can find a lot of inspo and tutorials on TH-cam tiktok and Pinterest! :)

  • @kristinemissy

I wasn’t allowed to wear corsets, boots, fishnets(but I was able to get away with the tops but not the tights), or dark eye makeup. So what I did was just wear a lot of lace, dark floral patterns, darker colors, no dyed hair, and dark lipstick. I would find spooky themed clothing and wear spooky tshirts, and wear band shirts or shirts to tv shows and movies that I knew weren’t too “scary” for my family members. I would also find items with buckles on them such as shoes, accessories, and items of clothing. And nothing too revealing. And I do remember having a secret wardrobe and putting on and taking off makeup and clothes at school.

I might be able to move in with my mom at some point, my mom had an emo or alt phase so I know she wouldn't care (plus we both are kinda emo), but i want to be able to at least have some form of alt fashion to express myself in my current home. thank you so much, Rayne! As a mom living along the "Bible Belt" who identifies as Goth. I have to really tone it down because of where I live and social situations. I have some tips for anyone going through this lack of acceptance of any given expression + a mini storytime of a glimpse into the 90's for anyone interested.
First: I can't emphasize the importance of style identity and self expression enough, especially to other parents. They are most likely my age or older. If they are, grew up in one of the most popular times for underground alternative styles to be accepted in- it was all over the radio, in magazines, in highschools, in malls, and movies. For the first time, an abundance of subcultures were really making their looks identifiable and growing in large numbers- depending on where they grew up.
Self expression is so crucial to identity.
My mom was an OG punk who also had a secret stash of clothes she would change into at parties, this was the late 70's-early 80's. I did the same thing in the late 90's-00's. Recently we talked and I never knew she hid her style from her mom. We laughed that I did the same thing!
She didn't let me wear black growing up unless it was dress pants required for school. I always loved subculture and music. I friended fellow Punks, Skaters, Alts, Goths, throughout my highschool years and they weren't so hung up on my clothes, (I could only window shop and dream walking by early 90's hot topic) which I also had very, very few clothes to alternate between since my family was frugal, and have many siblings. Got the most backlash for my mismatched style from wealthier kids.
Tip#1 Find out what your parent (s) will tolerate.
Hippy and skater styles were the approved styles from my mom...so we compromised and I went for darker colors. Wore some of her old stuff when she offered it. Skate pants and baggy shirts were ok as long as they weren't black. So I left the house in a Navy or dark grey one like plain men's tees and put a choker on at school. Iron ons are good, if you want to sport a band logo but can't wear a black shirt. You really have to get creative. Accessories are the easiest way.
Tip#2 Just ask your parents about their style in highschool or evolution of it, it may open doors of conversation with them taking steps towards acceptance of your style? Or if you share similar tastes in music? Just start asking them questions about their youth. Best of luck!

im glad to know that even though you've set some boundaries for your daughter (as she is younger) but are still letting her express herself the way she wants, and not judging her edgier taste in clothing!!! as someone who had a totally different, less "classic and casual" style from my parents, it was hard to get them to hear me out so to know you're supporting your daughter is awesome!!! thank you!!!
p.s. the youtube channel "funkyfitz" recently uploaded a video called "22 school outfit ideas to look cooler than ur classmates" and only 2 of the 22 outfits include a miniskirt, the rest are pants, dresses, or midi skirts. i think it might be really helpful to help your daughter dress more alternatively and express herself while still keeping within the boundaries. best of luck!!!
