  • @Cinephileofmany

I think Ricky nails something vital that gets missed these days. Just because your character takes a point of view, doesn’t mean the author does.
Also trying to tweak your comedy so that it doesn’t offend anyone would be a futile endeavor. There will ALWAYS be someone who is offended.

I like that Kumail brought up a valid counter point to Ricky's argument about being able to joke about anything and highlights the possible impact on minorities/marginalised groups/people and Ricky was able to then justify how he could by highlighting the simple fact that it would be wrong if trying to treat marginalised/minorities equally to everyone else to then not be able to joke about them on the same level as everything. It's the ability to differentiate between the subject and target of a joke or to understand irony and satire that matters and you can't pander to the stupidity and inability of others to understand your joke.

Ricky’s absolutely right in that intelligent comedy shouldn’t play down to stupid people. There’s nothing worse than a comedian over explaining a joke to make sure every audience member gets it. I find a lot of American comedians play to the stupid. Thankfully though, there are a lot of smart US comedy TV shows now too, where if you’re not listening carefully you’ll completely miss a joke and the story’s already moved on.

He said some beautiful, articulate things and commented on the genealogy of religion and tried to progress people past dogmatism. His work was picked up by the Nazis and abused and twisted. I don't think that he, or other artists, should censor their work because there is a risk it could be abused by shitty people.

Kenan says people just say hi, but I don't even watch snl, but I'd probably not be cool if I ran into him. I'd awkwardly sing out "I'm a dude, he's a dude, she's a dude, we're all dudes" 🤣 and he can't say that hasn't ever happened before.

RG is my life coach and makes my soul so happy. Really connected with him thru his standup Humanity, then Derek. Then just binged on whatever I could find with his msgs w/i. He lives his life in truth/happiness and in doing so in the public eye, as a teacher...he's my mentor. What else should we be doing with These DAZE?!? Between the way he and Dave Grohl live their lives and also how Tina Fey writes from her experiences and surrounds herself with talented people who can carry her words to new generations (thinking Mean Girls from Queen Bees the book, now on Broadway--come on, it's a metaphor about how one group will hold down another forever & ever, but especially groups who limit themselves based on what the groups in power say we have to LOOK like), I'm set--and grateful I live in a time with such intelligent, creative people.
What pandemic? Yes, I too am so sorry for those who have suffered. But remain grateful for the time to soul-search and BINGE the minds/works of my heroes.

Oh, and Kenan...if you read this, thanks for SO many SNL years. You are the sweetest! XOXOX! Also, Dan? Your interview with Kelly Clarkson was adorable and as a theater teacher who is online...I have bonded with SO many middle school kids who are watching your program with their parents...although I do have a schtick about saying the title so I don't get written up in the mid-west at a public school. *sigh*
