Shaker Workbench Build Process

- This is my "dream" workbench which I just finished a few months ago. I based the design on this Fine Woodworking article/video series: www.finewoodworking.com/video...
My overall dimensions are 75 1/2" long X 24" wide X 35" tall. Cherry base with the painted portions in poplar. The top is solid hard maple with cherry end cap and twin screw vise jaws. I went with the twin screw vise on the end (instead of a traditional tail vise) because I think it will be of more use for the type of work that I do, AND because I could pilfer it from my previous bench! 😁 I DO NOT have plans for this workbench. I made some initial rough drawings and figured out the rest during the build process. Special thanks to:
- My apprentice, Brooke who came to work with me via the "Skill Bridge" program.
- My good friend, Greg over at Cygnus Lumber for the custom cherry vise knobs..
- Woodcraft of Virginia Beach/Norfolk for too many things to list!
- My 11-yr-old son, Levi for helping me edit this video!

This is not a workbench, it’s a peace of art!
love it
nice very nice
Refreshing seeing a different work bench design being built on social media. Besides the Split top Roubo. Don't get me wrong I love seeing woodworkers roubo builds. This bench though 🤯 amazing work man!!
I love this bench so much, i had to watch it again
Stunning bench, excellent craftsmanship.
The tools and machinery i this shop are worth mort than my home, a wealthy man's shop for sure
Beautiful work! Thanks for sharing.
Great job man, a LOT of work in that one
Wow!!!
Wow, super nice! Good work!
Nice Job. Super clean design and robust hardware.
Very nice build!!
Great work! Glad I found your channel! The attention to detail is awesome! I'll look forward to more content.
Found your channel and subscribed within 30 seconds. On draw/cabinet pulls. I like oversized draw pulls, but I don't have the skill to make custom ones, so I make a backplate from a different species of wood for each pull giving the illusion of an oversized draw pull. A furniture historian online pointed this feature out as it was done on antique furniture, so I try to duplicate it. Similar to your making back, side panels, draw bottoms of solid wood instead of plywood. He also pointed these features out, so I commend you.
This is just insane! WOW
Awesome build!
Awesome 👏! Wonderful workbench and details. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Incredible
Magnificent!
Really well done mate!
The two thigh gap joints @ 5:20 are amazing!
I think the term you’re looking for is “houndstooth dovetail “. 😄👍
@@cleancutwoodworks Definitely looks more like a thigh gap than a hound's tooth. Geeze, who comes up with these names?
Love it!
so beautiful!🎉
Great job.
nice
Dream workbench!
Это произведение искусства!!!
Amazing work looks beautiful
Many many thanks
Very nice bench
Beautiful bench, all those lovely dovetails 👍🏼 I’ve just subscribed, terryTheMaker
Want!
Beautiful work brother! Can’t understand why you don’t have more subscribers being you do such great work!
Thanks Jason! I actually just started posting here on YT a few weeks ago, so I think it’s going pretty well so far. 👍👊
The wood contrasting with the milk paint is absolutely beautiful! Great job!
Very nice Bench. I build a ben h crafted by Bob Lang from FWW circa 2008 called the 21st Century Workbench.
Solid video. 🦅🌎⚓️

Very nice
Double dovetail? Didn't know it's a thing. Looks like a fantastic bench. Great video, thanks
Houndstooth dovetails they’re called
Nicely done. As I was watching this, I was thinking "hey this reminds of the coolest bench I've ever seen built by Fine Woodworking." Then I ready your details above. Lol. If I were to spend the time building a bench, this is likely they direction I would go as well. There is a good chance when I retire, I will move. In my next home, I want a house that has one of those offices with double french doors with glass in the front of the home. It will be my hand tool space (approved by the wife as she will get a large room for the artist stuff she does). With the drawers built into the bench, I can likely store everything I need there. For an in the home hand tool area, I want things to be neat and tidy.
By the way, awesome shop dog. What's the woofer's name?
import beer and short pants!
😆😆👍
What's your address, what's the code to your shop, and when are you not home? Just curious.
😆😆👍
is that real?
Beautiful. Liked & Subscribed. How many hours?
Appreciate it! I didn’t keep track, but I’d say about 130 hrs? The drawers take up a bunch of time.
Nice bench, how is the top attached to the base/frame?
1/4” lag screws from underneath. The top weighs close to 200 lbs, so you don’t need much to keep it in place. 😄👍👊
How did you attach the top?
I think I just found my next woodworking bench! Have you experienced and "issues" with it yet?
If I had a do-over… 1) Go with a traditional tail vise instead of the twin screw (I saved $ by using the twin screw from my old bench). 2) Add space between the bench top and drawers to accommodate dog holes for holdfasts.
These are my only design ‘regrets’. Best decision was the Benchcrafted leg vise. Good luck with your build! 👊
Thanks. I'm just finishing my bench build. I really like the idea of having one less open place for all the sawdust and shavings to accumulate under the bench. Shakers knew.@@cleancutwoodworks
If I'd have known how to build a bench like this, for sure I didn't need a bench like this cause I've already had one.... Beautiful but useless
Would have watched the whole video if the music hadn’t just kept going, and going, and going. Shop sounds and/or silence are sometimes better than on going music.
You have volume on your phone?
@@SeanHelmsMedia I muted my TV, got distracted, stopped watching. (just my 2¢)
