    Your videos make me want to slow down and work on quality and precision in my works. I know it's four years later, and it appears you don't comment often- but I just wanted to say thank you for sharing this and all of your other content. Really amazing stuff and so fun to watch.

    Ben, you are truly a masterful craftsman and a wonderfully talented woodworker. I too would simply ask for more narration to your videos, taking the time to explain to us novices what exactly you are doing and thinking when approaching a workpiece. I would love to hear what you are looking for, how the wood or tools are responding to your work, everything that goes into a project. You are so gifted. Please just provide a bit more instruction to learn the craft.

    Those hand cut blind dovetails were a joy to watch being done and to see the finished product.

    Almost to good to use as a workbench.

    Stunning work, I like the personal touch of signing and dating rather than an anonymous branding iron. I can imagine your future generations, after you’ve departed this mortal coil, finding that tangible connection with you very powerful. There was obviously no "It’s only a workbench" mentality. All those dovetails done to perfection was an amazing thing to see, especially for a newbie like myself. I really like your balance between hand tools and power tools, to me it looks spot on.

      Why can't you? Poplar is cheap. It certainly takes time, but for me it is more than worth it in the end. You can't beat the look and sustainability of a solid wood drawer bottom, tapered and fit snugly into its grooves. However, I have used plywood for many drawer bottom and it works just fine. Most of the times , for me, it comes down to the pace of the shop for that given project.. Thanks for watching, David.

    Hey Ben, how difficult was it to install the Lie Neilsen chain vise on the bench? Any tips for someone who is about to install one?

    • @bigben380
      @bigben380 ปีที่แล้ว

      It wasn't too bad. Comes with great instructions. Probably took an afternoon, not including the glue up time. But to be honest, it doesn't really matter how long it takes, this vise is fully worth the time. By far the best vise I have ever used. As far as tips go, the instructions are so good that I don't really have any info for you that isn't covered in the literature that comes with it. Maybe just make sure that you mill your face boards properly. Rough mill them a couple days ahead of time and let them acclimate before final milling them to thickness. Preferably, these need to be flat, and stay flat.

    How does the drawer stack work out with utilizing a hold fast on on the sliding deadman?

    • @bigben380
      @bigben380 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It wouldn't work. I use a dowel in the deadman. All it does is support the work before I clamp it to the bench. In all honesty the deadman is something that if I were to rebuild this bench, I would leave out. I've probably used it only a few times, and it is annoying to have to slide over to open the drawers. Always seems to be in the way.

    I'm going to mirror the others comments on the choice of music. Too many woodworking channels on YT where the creator puts music "they" like instead of what they think "we" would like. I noticed you ripping material on the band saw. Do you have a table saw or do you use band saw + hand tools? I'm just getting started and trying to decide what route I should go. Hand tools and band saw is appealing, but the one thing I haven't been able to reconcile is ripping boards. I haven't used a band saw much so wondering if this is a good replacement or not.

    • @bigben380
      @bigben380 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I do have a table saw, (two actually, one with a permanent dado stack in it) and I rely on them heavily. The bandsaw / hand tool route works but can be really time consuming. If woodworking a purely a hobby that there is nothing wrong with spending a little extra time to do it in a way that you enjoy more. bandsaw does a lot of things in a fairly safe manner.
      A table saw will give you higher level of accuracy, as well as efficiency. I cut most of my joinery on the table saw as well as most of my ripping and crosscutting. Again a table saw, if set up properly, can be very accurate.
      It really depends on the kind of work you will be doing. I think a table has more value. You can always buy a jigsaw to handle your curved work. However there is something romantic about a shop that has just a bandsaw and a good set of hand tools.
      In the end, get them both. I'm sure you could find an old Delta 14" bandsaw and a Delta Unisaw for under $1000 total
      Sorry for the late response.
