      Not sure you covered this, but formica is a brand name. There are several different names that can be used, wilsonart being one of them. The correct terminology is laminate and there all pretty much the same. Great build keep up the good work.

    If a guy that was setting up a new shop was building this table, I would recommend that he incorporate a router lift into it. I would also suggest changing the top to incorporate a downdraft table. But the way you built it...man I am in love. Beautiful project.

    • @MWAWoodworks
      @MWAWoodworks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a great idea! I already have a router lift built into my table saw, if you squint real hard you can see it in the thumbnail picture but I agree that would be a great addition to a table like this.

  • @5280Woodworking

    This is a very nice design, well thought out. I did something similar to my 40x90 workbench, breaking into 3 pieces so I could CNC whatever type of top I want (dogs, t-track, combo, etc.) One recommendation is to give access to the top t-slot of your extrusions. The Kreg Automaxx clamps fit and they are brilliant for top or side clamping, quickly and easily. They were a game changer when I added extrusion to all 4 sides of my bench. I hardly use my Festool clamps anymore.

    Nice video. I now might have to re-make my outfeed table. I like the look of the black Formica, but I chose white for my mine because I can draw on it full size to make sure parts fit. Yes it does get dirty, but it's a shop.

    Awesome build! One suggestion - if you didn't want the T tracks on the sides to protrude - just bore 1" holes on either end of the t track before installing it, it works great and you don't snag anything on the edges!

    I have an outfeed table with a pre-fab maple top with a similar dog hole pattern. I enclosed it underneath, slapped a DC fitting on the end apron, and now the entire thing is a down-draft table. Super handy! Not nearly as big as your tho. Nice work!

      @@MWAWoodworks I need to use a block of wood if I want to use a hold-fast, because they’ll whack the little 1/4” ply if whatever I’m holding is thin, but that’s a small compromise. I just screwed thin plywood rails at a slight incline onto the front and back apron, slid the plywood in, then held it in with blue tape. So if I drop something in there (and can’t get it with a magnet), I can take the tape off and fish it out. Or fish it thru the dust port. Even if you have a shop vac on a random orbit sander, it’s nice to have that to really get the dust flowing away from your face! I just disconnect the hose and use it for my router table or drum sander. Super handy.

    Excellent build. I like the setup and all of the storage space you have. Your narration also makes it simple and easy to understand what steps you use. I agree with one of the other comments that edge banding after the Formica is easier and more accurate. After all is said and done, what do you think the total cost of building a table like this would be? What is the total size of the table. I have a single car garage that I'm getting setup and, to be honest, I did it out of construction lumbar and rough plywood covered with Formica bc of the cost. Looking forward to watching some of your other vidoes as well.

    I built one, (not quite as fancy as I have a limited budget) Bought a solid core exterior door 36" x 80" for top, utilized some re-purposed 4x4's (from neighbors' fence) and made a cantilevered shelf on one end for my old craftsman tablesaw, large hole in shelf with garbage bag (one end cut off) as a sawdust chute into shop built wooden box on castors to catch sawdust. End vice, storage drawers x 4, shelves for tools i seldom use
    Glue & tape rack & clamp storage- Tyler (I wish you tube would allow posting of pictures)

      A small 1/4 hardboard sloped towards the sides of your table under the tabletop can allow most of the dust fall towards the sides but shield things underneath.

    BTW, I love your channel. The various shop ideas have inspired me to get most of my tools off of just clamping to the bench top and actually making individual cabinets for each. I'm also about to start a built in cabinets for my wife based on your quick cabinet designs.

      Don't remember exactly but what I did was measure my plywood in mm with a pair of digital calipers and then added half the thickness of my apron (1/2") which should get you around 30 or 31 mm. Variance in plywood thickness will be the determining factor

    Very nice job Matt. It looks great and I'm sure it's going to be very serving to you.Sometime soon you may consider a portable moxen vice for the top like the one on Tamar`s 3x3 channel.

    Excellent video! One question please: at 3:28 you're using what looks like a black aluminum fence with some stops and dogs attached, which seems like a handy MFT accessary. What is it / where an I find one? I looked on your website list of all tools but didn't see it. Thanks!

    So those bessy clamps you have.... the holes on the end are for a bracket you can buy and turn 2 of your 50 inch clamps into a 106 inch clamp. Awesome build!

    Very nice project. As a fellow woodworker, I am convinced we spend most our time building nice projects for our shop rather than use our shop to build nice projects for others!! 😁😂 I have often wondered when I finish building all of the shop projects I think of, what will I do then?!?

    • @MWAWoodworks

    The edge banding with the maple after applying the top is probably better. The maple takes the brunt of the damage from things banging into the side and prevents the Formica from getting those ugly chips.

    For shop drawers, do you find that a middle stretcher from the front to the back would better handle heavier items?

    • @MWAWoodworks
      @MWAWoodworks  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah adding support under the drawer will help if you plan on having really heavy items in them.

    Great Bench. Here is dumb question. What do you do to get rid of all the saw dust and wood chips when you empty the bin? Where do you dump it?

    theres so many little things with these tables that i think people notice after the fact like what happens when something falls thru the hole? how do you retrieve it. Also when dust falls in there, how do you clean it up? i think a table that addresses this and the other little things would make an ultimate table. I know dennis from hookd on wood addressed this issue and well thought out. Cant wait to make mine. great video still

    How about routing grooves in between the dog holes for track clamps? Gives you other options for holding down your workpieces. Something similar to the new track clamp work bench Woodpecker came out with.

    • @MWAWoodworks
      @MWAWoodworks  ปีที่แล้ว

      You could do that. Probably reduce the number of dog holes otherwise there won't be much actaul table top left lol

    What size pocket screws do you use for your 5/8th BB ply? Do you use the micro drill bit and guide from Kreg or just the regular size?

    • @MWAWoodworks
      @MWAWoodworks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Regular. You don't need the micro unless it's half inch ply. I use 1 inch screws.

    I always see tops edge banded before formica and I think you did it right lol AFTER formica because it has thickness and that edge banding protects the formica from chipping up.

    • @MWAWoodworks
      @MWAWoodworks  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good point!

    • @CarmoniusFinsnickeri
      @CarmoniusFinsnickeri ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes but also really difficult to make the edge banding 100% flush with the formica if applied afterwards. You can have it slightly proud and then trim rout it flush "from the side" but that's a delicate operation not routing into the laminate. Anyway, nice build.
