This is why you need a good chemist to understand what and how actually chemicals work. Not self named estheticians or just cosmetic lovers. Thank you Michelle ♥️
All chemist don't know about the skin Dummy soooo.
@@riveraspen2745 Having chemical degree it is not that difficult to understand how skin works. However it doesn't work wise versa - aesthetician (without Physio/chem degree) can't tell explain you chemical reactions the way it should be done. But it is only my opinion, you don't have to agree with it :)
This is why a good esthetician has an understanding of ingredients. You can’t effectively treat patients/clients or communicate what you’d want the chemist to formulate if you don’t.
@@riveraspen2745 you sound like you know nothing about anything lol
We need Michelle to exist 🤍
I can’t wait for part two….it’s been a year since this part one came out 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
this is crazy, I was literally doing research on vitamin C this week and was just thinking how I was gonna check your channel for some info and then this pops up!! perfect timing!
Yay! Hope it answered some of your questions ^_^
@@LabMuffinBeautySciencefffffx শ্ব,
Retinoids are a staple in my day and night routines and I thought I couldn’t use it with Vitamin C. Nice to know it’s not a hard no! Would love to see your routine using both actives
Your skin looks amazing!
Hi Michelle, can you do a video on ‘pores’, perhaps their biochemistry, how they work, and common myths surrounding pores on skin, please? Thanks for all the informative content. Keep it up!
pores don't have a "biochemistry", they're literal holes
What ever happened to the part 2 lol?
All these reminded me is that I’m too lazy to chase a worth-it Vitamin C skincare. I’ll keep my sunscreen+tretinoin game (and save some cash😉), thank you very much.
Michelle, did you make a part 2 for this? I can't find it anywhere and I would love to know more!
i've been looking for it as well and can't find anything
@@fave525 me neither, noithing about the derivatives
As Michelle and I both have ADHD I'm not surprised lol
Glad I’m not the only one. Disappointing. Just leave out any mention if you aren’t going to follow through with something or post an update addressing the reasons for not doing so.
Thank you for a wonderful video! Very informative! A couple of years ago I heard a dermatologist talk about the ABC of skincare. “A” for vitamin A or tretinoin, “B” for vitamin B or niacinamide, and “C” for vitamin C. The derm basically the “A” was best and most effective for the skin. I use the first two (A and B) and they work wonderfully. I tried for a few years to use vitamin C and it didn’t do anything for my skin. I made sure I used the ascorbic acid version and tried inexpensive to expensive versions, water based and oil based and didn’t see any change. I’ve seen pretty major changes in my skin with using vitamin A. And vit C can be quite expensive. With the vitamin A my insurance covers it. It’s been well worth it for my skin.
It's definitely not necessary for everyone, although I do like it because of the potential long term advantages. I would personally pick a proper retinoid over vitamin C!
Same here. I did a lot of research and chose a pretty pricey Vit C serum, which I used religiously every morning after cleansing, for over 3 months. I saw zero difference in my skin. Been using Retin A for about 5 years now, with excellent results, and figure the other skin care products I use have the antioxidants I need. Won’t be buying any more Vit c serums.
Omg I'm so glad this video popped up and debunked the 'ascorbic acid decreases UV protection' myth for me. I'd stopped wearing it under sunscreen but now I'll wear it with gusto!
Soooo many myths (industry moves many dermatologists succumbed to) are busted in her videos. Absolutely love her!
I love hearing you speak! Such a calming voice, demeanor, and accent. And most importantly, I love how you share your knowledge and research. Thank you 😊
I would love you to make Part 2 of this! Ascorbic acid is not for me, and help to navigate Vitamin C esters (and product recommendations) would be so helpful.
Noooo please make a part 2! Would love to hear your thoughts and recommendations for SAP and THD Ascorbate!!
Could you do some videos on nail care chemistry? I feel like that doesn’t get talked about much.
I have been using a collagen powder in a shake about four times a week for 6 months. it has made a huge difference with my nails. I don't have as many ridges and they just look pinker and healthier. So much so I don't even like to wear nail polish over my nails anymore.
Hmmm maybe - I started my blog talking about nails! What did you want to know? 😊
Yes I would love this too! I do try to eat well and take supplements but my nails remain brittle. I would love to understand how to better care for them 😊
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience not op but also very keen for this!
I would like to know:
- best practice wrt basic care, eg what damages nails, how to maintain healthy nails (especially when one works with cleaners, or gardens, or as a mechanic, and other hand-intensive work), different types of nails (eg my sibling has mega thick nails - they're almost claws - whereas mine are quite weak)
- mythbusting, eg do nail strengtheners work, will it damage them to have them constantly painted/covered with acrylics, can you tell if someone's malnourished by the lunula or white patches or cloudiness (a common thing that my mum's naturopath frequently said)
- how to recover from damage, eg injuries, infections, whether nail beds can recover from a lifetime of chewing (that one is not at all personal >.>)
there's, uh, a short list for you? lol. it's not your main area of interest, of course, so i'd equally appreciate recs for scientifically-focussed sources. i don't really know enough about it to figure that out for myself and i trust your judgement ^_^
I choose retinoid rather than Vitamin C. Retinoid have the best evidence when it comes to reverse sun damage. People love Vitamin C because they can brighten their skin and presumably boost collagen production. But they tend to be on the pricier side. I'm in love with Tretinoin.
If I had to choose I'd pick tretinoin too! But I use both ^_^
I agree with Michelle. Why choose ? Use them both. ^^
Pretty sure you aren't supposed to use any type of retinoid if you're pregnant or planning to get pregnant. Besides, most people use topical vitC specifically to target hyperpigmentation spots, and in some countries tretinoin is prescription-only; lack of accessibility is the biggest reason others turn to other ingredients to do fairly similar effects.
@@quillpen815 hyperpigmentation can be treated by using other ingredients such as arbutin, kojic acid, licorice root, niacinamide, etc.
For women who get pregnant, there are other ingredients that can help for anti aging such as Alpha hydroxy acids. 9 month pregnancy without using Retinoid is okay. After they are giving birth, just use it back.
Can’t wait for part two! Finding affordable versions is really difficult! :)
Gurl i been waiting 2 years 😭
Rohto melano CC needs to mention the vitamin C percentage in the product.
Hello Doctor please make an elaborate video on ceramides too
Love these videos :) Michelle, can you do one about key hair product ingredients? Like - what is it in "volumising" products that actually gives your hair volume?
I bought the CE Ferulic online directly from Skinceuticals 3 times. The first time it started to discolor after 6 months and I had not finished the bottle. The second time I purchased it, it started to discolor after 3 months. The third (and last) time it was sent to me already discolored. Your remark that it would last a year completely surprised me.
What do use now?
What do you use now?
I think it’s really because you keep them inadequately. She might mean that you’re supposed to wrap aluminum foil and keep in the fridge to keep it for that long.
@@natto2581 Since it arrived after already starting the chemical changer I don't think that is my fault.
This lady is the best, most informative videos and her voice is amazing to listen to lol
I buy bulk ascorbic acid to dechlorinate water for my fish tanks. But it has other uses! After bathing I dissolve a small amount of vitamin C and niacinamide powder in distilled water, (I use a small wasabi/soy sushi dish to do mixing) add a few drops of lanolin oil for ceramides, vitamin E to stabilize the vitamin C, carrot oil for vitamin A, and 7-12 pumps of Equate brand CeraVe. Stir it until its mixed and has a serum feel to it, and apply it all over my body. It's inexpensive, super fresh and only adds a few minutes to my after bath routine.🌱

I’m still waiting for your part two 🥰 can’t wait to hear about the derivatives!
Such a smooth presentation. No fluff. Good flow. You earned a new subscriber!
Following your previous posts on Vitamin C I started using it every morning. First using your DIY recipe (it's great for slowly ramping up the concentration), and then I found a local skincare company that produces their ascorbic acid serums every 2 weeks to make sure it arrives fresh.
The formula seems pretty generic with ferulic acid, glycerin, sodium hyaluronate, and panthenol - but it's 15% at
Yay I'm glad you liked it! That sounds like a really good way to ensure freshness :)
Would you mind sharing the local company you purchase from? I would be interested in seeing if they may ship! ☺️
@@_Hello_4444 Sure the company is BasicLab (based in Poland, as am I), and the serum is called "Serum z witamina C 15%"
That being said, the main reason I went with them was because I was concerned how imported vit c serums (for example Paula's Choice, which doesn't have its own store over here) might sit in a cold/hot warehouse for unknown amounts of time - unless I bought it directly from them, in which case I'd know it was a couple days I guess.
But with something that perishes relatively quickly, I just didn't want to pay the extra 15 EUR for shipping every 3-4 months.
Then again, BasicLab also seem to charge about 15 EUR for shipping across Europe (except Norway and Great Britain), so I feel like you're not much better off ordering from them.
@@MagicznaPanda Oh this looks amazing! But when I try to order it I dont get Norway as a shipping alternative 🤔
Hi I cannot find your Part 2 series on Vitamin C derivatives…where can I find it please? Thanks

Hello Dr Michelle, can you please make elaborate vidoes like this on all popular skincare ingredients like ceramides, exfoliants, niacinamide etc
Thank you for discussing colloidal gold! Always love hearing your take on ingredients. ❤️
Goshhh.... My SKINCARE QUEEN.... Hey Susan!!! ❤❤❤
I got really enjoy the timeless brand of vitamin c. I got the 20% and next time I’m going for the 10% because the 20% is too harsh for my sensitive skin, plus I use retinoids so it’s even more sensitive. I watch a dermatologist that preaches stronger does Not automatically make the product more effective. How do you feel about this? Also the theory which I find to be true for myself is if you are using a stronger percentage, you are more likely to get irritation which results in you actually using the product less making it less effective. Lower concentration means less irritation and therefore you can use it more often and reap the benefits.
What convinced me with vitamin C was when I stopped using Geek & Gorgeous after 8-9 months and the started to notice that my forehead was looking darker without it
I am trying SO HARD to love my Geek and Gorgeous but I feel like I can still smell it on my face 12+ hours after I've applied it, so this is motivating to hear lol
Love your shirt, love the matrix, love everything, thanks! 😻🤩
Yay thank you!!

Thank you! My eyebrow pencil went red all of a sudden and I had no idea it was a reaction to the Maelove Glow Maker I'd recently started using. (I'm ditching the brow pencil and keeping the vitamin C).
Hi Michelle, i love your videos. Can’t find part 2 of the video though…
Using a salicylic acid face wash in the morning before applying vitamin C aids in penetration. Even better, use an acidic toner (I use an AHA/BHA/PHA toner) to further increase penetration. Otherwise, apply it before anything else.
You can mix aha and vitamin c?
Thank you for this video! I love hearing on the chemical level of why and how Vitamin C is good for skin. I use Timeless Vitamin C which you mentioned. Yay!
Lol, "she bloody warned you." 😂😂
I did! And don't you forget it 😡
The disclaimers sent me rolling! 🤣 Thank you for this information. I've been looking into vitamin C lately, so good timing!
Glad it was helpful! P.S. Don't sue me
Missha also has a vitamin c product that allows you to mix the powder in once it arrives. I just ordered it and I reaaaally hope the scent is as light and citrusy as other people describe it as.
Eucerin has excellent new packaging solution for vitamin C (with powder activation). It doesn't oxidize with easy video instructions as to how to use it without compromising it at all. Using it for months.
I've been using Regimen Labs vitamin x serum which has vitamin c. I've been loving it!
Hi. Have you made part 2 yet? I've hunted for it without success.
Just another comment asking for part 2 💕
A video on how you became a cosmetic chemist would be much appreciated. I’m going to school for chemistry and was wondering how I could become a cosmetic chemist like you
Thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated your very detailed and relatable info on Vit C. NEW SUBSCRIBER. Thanks much
Yay! Thank you so much on behalf of all the scientists - like me - who have no patience to do youtube videos about these VERY important things.
You are brilliant and I love the way you explain the science of it without putting the entire room to sleep (guilty)
looking forward to the rest of the videos
5:25 "you have to be really careful otherwise you'll burn your face off" I wish I watched this video before my endevour with vitamin C in the morning and retinol at night. I've been slowly easing my skin into retinol with a low % but I went too confidently into vitamin C at 15% daily for about a week and a half until my skin got stingy and the next morning my skin was dry and tight and even stung with some antiseptic ointment creams but I continued use as I knew they were safe for face and on broken skin and then I moved onto nivea cream in a few days (german version) on top of a thinner moisturiser which has helped soothe the dryness and help the flakes sort of melt off instead of flaking and my skin is finally almost done shedding like a snake a week after I noticed stinging and stopped with the vitamin C and retinol combo. I will ease my skin into it much more gradually now and maybe not use a 15% vitamin C daily, I might find a derivative to use for in between days
I first heard of colloidal gold in medicine when some students in my high school were doing a project on the use of colloidal gold for concentrating chemotherapy in specific locations of the tumours in cancer
Hi michelle, love how educational your videos are. Could you please do a video on scarring and products to help with that? Thank you 💕
OMG all rounded explanation about vit. C. I owe you, Michelle!
Thank you! ❤️
I always had extremely dry skin and I'm prone to psoriasis, so my go to was the Garnier Aloe Vera serum and Nivea soft, but now that it's summer, it just sits on my face. Good for me, my skin has improved, but I still needed a good skincare so it doesn't get bad again. When I went to the beauty shop today there was nothing but vitamin c products. So I guess it's more the "light weight summer" stuff 😂 I'm eager to find out if it really has all the effects you've mentioned, minus the possible irritation, I'm a bit sensitive to that 😬
Omg i have been wondering why the collars of my shirts look like I've been shedding makeup but i haven't been wearing makeup since quarantine started! Thank you so much, I don't feel crazy anymore.
For anyone wondering... I diluted The Ordinary's powder L-ascorbic acid in a liquid form of centella asiatica, and I noticed the tanning product rub off effect about halfway through the powder bottle.
Is part 2 coming soon (I hope)? Love your vids!
That was an amazing bomb of information as always Michelle thank you!! But I am kinda irritated that no other company is allowed to create its own vit c serum just because SkinCeuticals has the patent that really works! And it is the only one that really really works... I am refusing to pay so much money for this however...
Looking forward to your next videos!
It should expire soon if that's any consolation 😊 But other companies could do clinical tests on their own formulas too to match it! But the financial incentive isn't really there...
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience Thank you so much for the reply!! I was wondering if any other antioxidant inredients could ''mimic'' the effect of ascorbic acid?
I’ve tried sooo many ascorbic acid serums, and usually my skin can’t handle them. I’ve come to realize that the most effective and tolerable of them for me is the Drunk Elephant one. Now that they’ve dealt with the freshness issue of it, i’m more inclined to do a last effort and see if i’ll work as a part of my longterm routine. Had almost given up on vitamin c for me, but it’s such a great ingredient that i just can’t not use it.
Look into MDAire
Thx for explaining this very important anti-oxidant.
Excellent explanation, so thoughtful and thorough. Thank you, You are a not only a scientist but a teacher as well.
Thank you so much. I finished my current vitamin C + E serum so I've been looking for something else.
Where is part 2?
Thank you for this helpful guide. Did you ever make part 2? I can't seem to find part 2 anywhere on your channel.
I JUST got into vitamin C. Been using the Klairs Drops, and the Rohto CC Melano serum. I did have sensitivity at first, but it went away after about a week.
I am a bit confused about if Vitamin C and retinoids can be layered.
Conventional wisdom is that L-ascorbic acid and retinol shouldn't be layered, because they destabilize each other and work at different PHs, making each other less effective. I do sometimes read that more stable derivates can be layered (like retinyl palmitate or granactive retinoid and magnesium ascorbyl phosphate or sodium ascorbyl), but that one would not be able to layer, say, tretinoin and L-ascorbic acid.
I've seen some folks say you CAN layer them, so long as your skin can tolerate them. I've even seen some say that, contrary to popular belief, they don't destabilize each other, but actually stabilize each other. Is this true? I see one study that these folks mostly cite. I've only read thr abstract (I don't think I have enough technical understanding to bother trying to read the actual study), but it seems to be that it was a split-face study that compared a retinol/vitamin C mixture to a placebo, rather than a retinol/vitamin C layering to people using one or the other. Does the fact that the experimental group saw better results than the control group show that these products don't destabilize each other? Or does it only show that, even if the effectiveness of the products are reduced when combined, they still produce SOME results, and certainly better results than just applying a vehicle?
pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15767769/
My second question is about layering AHAs or BHAs with L-ascorbic acid. Most websites say this is a no-no, too. But they mostly say it's a no-no because of irritation. How about for the people whose skin can tolerate it, though? Do the products destabilize each other/reduce each other's effectiveness, or are they fine layered?
Great topic and I love the way you try to completely cover the different aspects of it. 👍🏻😄
I LITERALLY BEEN WAITING FOR AN UPDATED VITAMIN C GUIDE. I HOPE YOU CAN MAKE SUGGESTION FOR DRUGSTORE/AFFORDABLE VITAMIN C FOR ME AND THOSE PEOPLE WHO CAN'T AFFORD EXPENSIVE BRANDS.

@@LabMuffinBeautyScience Oh I like that idea!

I have the tatcha vitamin c and it’s decent but I can’t wait to try some of these
🙋🏽♀️ when you talked about ascorbic acid into an oily base, you mentioned that the ascorbic acid slowly dissolves in the water that is evaporating from the skin. You also mentioned the TEWL… could you please explain the connection between ascorbic acid in an oily base and TEWL? I am pretty sure I misunderstood the message 😅🙈
I think she meant that tewl is always happening, and that these oil based products rely on it to deliver the vitC into the skin because oils don't really stop tewl... i think actually nothing fully stops tewl, maybe saran wrap lol?
I think it's that because of TEWL, these oil/silicone based ascorbic acids work. TEWL is what releases the water from your skin and dissolves the ascorbic acid.
Yep that ^ TEWL from your skin dissolves the ascorbic acid crystals which allows the AA to absorb into skin.
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience so, would this mean that these type or AA would increase TEWL? Or just taking advantage of the water that we normally lose to dissolve the AA without increasing TEWL? 🤔🙏🏼
@@CieloSkin they just take advantage of it

That's The Ordinary one I mentioned in the water-free section! I like it but it's not for everyone. I prefer the Paula's Choice one but TO's is fine as well, just proceed with caution and start with the mixing method.
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience thank you, i mix it with a day cream but maybe i should mix it with a toner/serum so its closer to my skin?

Lab Muffin video yeeeesss 🤩🤩!! I've been using vitamin c for a while. It's the diy from one of your videos and I apply it after a glycolic acid face wash (Loreal Paris). So far my skin looks a lot brighter and I started incorporating azeliac acid as well. Just need to find a high uva sunscreen, which is kinda hard in the US 🙃.
Yay that's great to hear! If you can't import a sunscreen, maybe check out Bondi Sands! It's approved in Australia so it has better UVA protection than most US sunscreens ^_^
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience
Hi Michelle I have a query.
You have said that the spf differs with the quantity we apply. Does it applies to uva to? For instance overapplying a
pa+++ sunscreen can give protection equal to pa++++?
@@linalex3860 Maybe, but it's really difficult to overapply enough - PA+++ to PA++++ is double the protection, you'd need double the normal amount of sunscreen.
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience
Thanks Michelle, here in India pa ++++ sunscreen are pretty heavy. So I apply more and frequently of spf 30 and
pa+++(they are very light). I think you might like Indian sunscreens, they mostly use tinosorbs and uvinals for uva and they are very affordable tho.
Love this style of informative video on a specific ingredient. Would love the same on peptides
Hi Michelle love your channel I was wondering have you ever done a part two on the vitamin c derivatives I feel like I seen the video floating around somewhere but can’t find it
Loved this Michelle, can't wait for part 2. What do you think of mixing The Ordinary's ferulic acid & resveratrol serum with ascorbic powder? I've mixed their pure ascorbic powder (which is the finest vit c powder I've ever used btw- it dissolves in less the 10 secs, more quickly than those from the supplements aisle) with their ferulic acid serum for years now and I also use their alpha arbutin serum with my local Superdrug's (equivalent to Walgreens) own brand tranexamic acid 2.5% serum to help with residual hyperpigmentation. I use the alpha arbutin + Tranexamic acid serum first and follow them up with the vit c + ferulic acid serum after, then moisturiser, then sunscreen everyday. This is the cheapest way I can get really good antioxidants and tyrosinase inhibitors in one without spending tons on one little bottle of premade serum. Hope this helps someone. Love from the UK 🇬🇧
I just got the Ordinary C in Silicone and a bottle of the Ferulic. I "think" you can mix them together. But I've been using the C first then mixing the Ferulic with a Vit E oil right after. Tonight I'll try just mixing with each other.
Girl. In the UK. Thanks lol.
My self made vit c "serum" oxidates way slower when I add vitamin e and ferulic acid. It's great to see chemistry at work
You can't just add vitamin c powder to oils it's much more complex than that and doesn't keep it stable I researched this on google maybe you should look into it more.
@@nicolerose7639correct. The ferulic/resveratrol serum is oil based and ascorbic acid is water soluble therefore the resultant product will be ineffective
About time, a real chemist
Best vitamin C video so far.
My mother used to make a masc with fresh lemon and the white part of the egg, was letting it penetrate for 10-20 minutes onto her skin. I did this also when I was a teenage. I never had problems from it. It helped my acne. What do you think about that? How effective it would be for collagen production, how deep can the lemon and egg ingredients penetrate the skin?
I made the DIY formula of the vitamin C serum and it did burn my face lol also it constantly got contaminated. Preparing skincare in my kitchen was a really bad idea lol. I'll stick to a manufactured product unless I have access to a lab to make my own skincare.
Is it safe to say there will never be a part 2 to this video? 🫤
