Thank you for a wonderful video! Very informative! A couple of years ago I heard a dermatologist talk about the ABC of skincare. “A” for vitamin A or tretinoin, “B” for vitamin B or niacinamide, and “C” for vitamin C. The derm basically the “A” was best and most effective for the skin. I use the first two (A and B) and they work wonderfully. I tried for a few years to use vitamin C and it didn’t do anything for my skin. I made sure I used the ascorbic acid version and tried inexpensive to expensive versions, water based and oil based and didn’t see any change. I’ve seen pretty major changes in my skin with using vitamin A. And vit C can be quite expensive. With the vitamin A my insurance covers it. It’s been well worth it for my skin.
It's definitely not necessary for everyone, although I do like it because of the potential long term advantages. I would personally pick a proper retinoid over vitamin C!
Same here. I did a lot of research and chose a pretty pricey Vit C serum, which I used religiously every morning after cleansing, for over 3 months. I saw zero difference in my skin. Been using Retin A for about 5 years now, with excellent results, and figure the other skin care products I use have the antioxidants I need. Won’t be buying any more Vit c serums.

Using a salicylic acid face wash in the morning before applying vitamin C aids in penetration. Even better, use an acidic toner (I use an AHA/BHA/PHA toner) to further increase penetration. Otherwise, apply it before anything else.
What convinced me with vitamin C was when I stopped using Geek & Gorgeous after 8-9 months and the started to notice that my forehead was looking darker without it
I am trying SO HARD to love my Geek and Gorgeous but I feel like I can still smell it on my face 12+ hours after I've applied it, so this is motivating to hear lol
I’ve tried sooo many ascorbic acid serums, and usually my skin can’t handle them. I’ve come to realize that the most effective and tolerable of them for me is the Drunk Elephant one. Now that they’ve dealt with the freshness issue of it, i’m more inclined to do a last effort and see if i’ll work as a part of my longterm routine. Had almost given up on vitamin c for me, but it’s such a great ingredient that i just can’t not use it.
I always had extremely dry skin and I'm prone to psoriasis, so my go to was the Garnier Aloe Vera serum and Nivea soft, but now that it's summer, it just sits on my face. Good for me, my skin has improved, but I still needed a good skincare so it doesn't get bad again. When I went to the beauty shop today there was nothing but vitamin c products. So I guess it's more the "light weight summer" stuff 😂 I'm eager to find out if it really has all the effects you've mentioned, minus the possible irritation, I'm a bit sensitive to that 😬
Thank you for this video! I love hearing on the chemical level of why and how Vitamin C is good for skin. I use Timeless Vitamin C which you mentioned. Yay!
Lab Muffin video yeeeesss 🤩🤩!! I've been using vitamin c for a while. It's the diy from one of your videos and I apply it after a glycolic acid face wash (Loreal Paris). So far my skin looks a lot brighter and I started incorporating azeliac acid as well. Just need to find a high uva sunscreen, which is kinda hard in the US 🙃.
Yay that's great to hear! If you can't import a sunscreen, maybe check out Bondi Sands! It's approved in Australia so it has better UVA protection than most US sunscreens ^_^
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience Hi Michelle I have a query. You have said that the spf differs with the quantity we apply. Does it applies to uva to? For instance overapplying a pa+++ sunscreen can give protection equal to pa++++?
@@linalex3860 Maybe, but it's really difficult to overapply enough - PA+++ to PA++++ is double the protection, you'd need double the normal amount of sunscreen.
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience Thanks Michelle, here in India pa ++++ sunscreen are pretty heavy. So I apply more and frequently of spf 30 and pa+++(they are very light). I think you might like Indian sunscreens, they mostly use tinosorbs and uvinals for uva and they are very affordable tho.
@7:44 You said that L-ascorbic acid breaks down faster when there is water. Does this mean it is better to apply it on cleansed but dried skin? Because many derms actually tell us to apply stuff when skin is moist (to prevent epidermal water loss). And I know one Korean company uses liposomal Vit C in very dark bottles and the liquid is yellow. I wonder if this helps the L-ascorbic acid to penetrate and work better? What are your thoughts?
Thanks a lot for the great and informative video 😁! One of the product packaging categories you missed were Vitamin C ampoules. What do you think of the Vichy LiftActiv Peptide-C Ampoules? I'd really like to know your feedback on it since it's the one I'm currently using. Thank you 😁😁❤️
That was an amazing bomb of information as always Michelle thank you!! But I am kinda irritated that no other company is allowed to create its own vit c serum just because SkinCeuticals has the patent that really works! And it is the only one that really really works... I am refusing to pay so much money for this however... Looking forward to your next videos!
It should expire soon if that's any consolation 😊 But other companies could do clinical tests on their own formulas too to match it! But the financial incentive isn't really there...
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience Thank you so much for the reply!! I was wondering if any other antioxidant inredients could ''mimic'' the effect of ascorbic acid?
5:25 "you have to be really careful otherwise you'll burn your face off" I wish I watched this video before my endevour with vitamin C in the morning and retinol at night. I've been slowly easing my skin into retinol with a low % but I went too confidently into vitamin C at 15% daily for about a week and a half until my skin got stingy and the next morning my skin was dry and tight and even stung with some antiseptic ointment creams but I continued use as I knew they were safe for face and on broken skin and then I moved onto nivea cream in a few days (german version) on top of a thinner moisturiser which has helped soothe the dryness and help the flakes sort of melt off instead of flaking and my skin is finally almost done shedding like a snake a week after I noticed stinging and stopped with the vitamin C and retinol combo. I will ease my skin into it much more gradually now and maybe not use a 15% vitamin C daily, I might find a derivative to use for in between days
I will be making formulation for hyperpigmentation where i will be using, rice, tomato 🍅 and potato as active ingredient. Using microspheres technology. The dosage form will be in aerosol, stick. Mainly waterless stick. How does it sound. It's my project work. Please tell. 🙏
🙋🏽♀️ when you talked about ascorbic acid into an oily base, you mentioned that the ascorbic acid slowly dissolves in the water that is evaporating from the skin. You also mentioned the TEWL… could you please explain the connection between ascorbic acid in an oily base and TEWL? I am pretty sure I misunderstood the message 😅🙈
I think she meant that tewl is always happening, and that these oil based products rely on it to deliver the vitC into the skin because oils don't really stop tewl... i think actually nothing fully stops tewl, maybe saran wrap lol?
I think it's that because of TEWL, these oil/silicone based ascorbic acids work. TEWL is what releases the water from your skin and dissolves the ascorbic acid.
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience so, would this mean that these type or AA would increase TEWL? Or just taking advantage of the water that we normally lose to dissolve the AA without increasing TEWL? 🤔🙏🏼

I JUST got into vitamin C. Been using the Klairs Drops, and the Rohto CC Melano serum. I did have sensitivity at first, but it went away after about a week.
I might have had a bad experience with Paula’s choice one. I’m not sure if it’s because I’ve opened the bottle for about 3 months and products were oxidised. It was super irritating that my eyes and face were swollen for a few days...at the time, I thought it was just allergy or hay fever (but I’ve never had allergy of any kind) and I went back using it and boom...my face was swollen again with impaired skin barrier😵 it took me two weeks to heal. When I googled my symptoms, I also saw a reddit thread saying vitamin c serums could cause corneal erosion if not used properly around the eye area...I NEVER thought of that!
Thank you, exactly what I needed! Used the TheOrdinary Serum you've mentioned so far, but didn’t know I could use it with Niacinamide (which is my holy grail). It’s a bit heavy, but I get results and it’s inexpensive. Thought about switching to a different product, but first I'll wait for part 2 of this series.
Awesome video 🤩 Thank you so much! The info provided is as detailed as it could possibly be. I've been using your DIY vitamin C serum for some time now. I've noticed that the formula you propose with baking soda stains my hands, and some time ago I stopped putting baking soda, mixing just ascorbic acid and water. I wonder if this somehow affects the stability or effectiveness 😳
I choose retinoid rather than Vitamin C. Retinoid have the best evidence when it comes to reverse sun damage. People love Vitamin C because they can brighten their skin and presumably boost collagen production. But they tend to be on the pricier side. I'm in love with Tretinoin.
Pretty sure you aren't supposed to use any type of retinoid if you're pregnant or planning to get pregnant. Besides, most people use topical vitC specifically to target hyperpigmentation spots, and in some countries tretinoin is prescription-only; lack of accessibility is the biggest reason others turn to other ingredients to do fairly similar effects.
@@quillpen815 hyperpigmentation can be treated by using other ingredients such as arbutin, kojic acid, licorice root, niacinamide, etc. For women who get pregnant, there are other ingredients that can help for anti aging such as Alpha hydroxy acids. 9 month pregnancy without using Retinoid is okay. After they are giving birth, just use it back.

I made the DIY formula of the vitamin C serum and it did burn my face lol also it constantly got contaminated. Preparing skincare in my kitchen was a really bad idea lol. I'll stick to a manufactured product unless I have access to a lab to make my own skincare.

Using a salicylic acid face wash in the morning before applying vitamin C aids in penetration. Even better, use an acidic toner (I use an AHA/BHA/PHA toner) to further increase penetration. Otherwise, apply it before anything else.
You can mix aha and vitamin c?
What convinced me with vitamin C was when I stopped using Geek & Gorgeous after 8-9 months and the started to notice that my forehead was looking darker without it
I am trying SO HARD to love my Geek and Gorgeous but I feel like I can still smell it on my face 12+ hours after I've applied it, so this is motivating to hear lol
I've been using Regimen Labs vitamin x serum which has vitamin c. I've been loving it!
Look into MDAire
Hi Michelle, i love your videos. Can’t find part 2 of the video though…
Hi. Have you made part 2 yet? I've hunted for it without success.
Thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated your very detailed and relatable info on Vit C. NEW SUBSCRIBER. Thanks much
Hi michelle, love how educational your videos are. Could you please do a video on scarring and products to help with that? Thank you 💕
I always had extremely dry skin and I'm prone to psoriasis, so my go to was the Garnier Aloe Vera serum and Nivea soft, but now that it's summer, it just sits on my face. Good for me, my skin has improved, but I still needed a good skincare so it doesn't get bad again. When I went to the beauty shop today there was nothing but vitamin c products. So I guess it's more the "light weight summer" stuff 😂 I'm eager to find out if it really has all the effects you've mentioned, minus the possible irritation, I'm a bit sensitive to that 😬
I’m using the Melano CC. I like it and it’s affordable.
Thank you for this video! I love hearing on the chemical level of why and how Vitamin C is good for skin. I use Timeless Vitamin C which you mentioned. Yay!
Excellent explanation, so thoughtful and thorough. Thank you, You are a not only a scientist but a teacher as well.
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience
Hi Michelle I have a query.
You have said that the spf differs with the quantity we apply. Does it applies to uva to? For instance overapplying a
pa+++ sunscreen can give protection equal to pa++++?
@@linalex3860 Maybe, but it's really difficult to overapply enough - PA+++ to PA++++ is double the protection, you'd need double the normal amount of sunscreen.
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience
Thanks Michelle, here in India pa ++++ sunscreen are pretty heavy. So I apply more and frequently of spf 30 and
pa+++(they are very light). I think you might like Indian sunscreens, they mostly use tinosorbs and uvinals for uva and they are very affordable tho.
Lol, "she bloody warned you." 😂😂
I did! And don't you forget it 😡
@7:44 You said that L-ascorbic acid breaks down faster when there is water.
Thank you 😁😁❤️
OMG I REALLY NEED TO KNOW THIS!!!
Is there a part 2?
I will be making formulation for hyperpigmentation where i will be using, rice, tomato 🍅 and potato as active ingredient.
Using microspheres technology.
The dosage form will be in aerosol, stick. Mainly waterless stick.
How does it sound.
It's my project work. Please tell. 🙏
You're a hoot Michelle! I love your sense of humor! I cant wait for part 2!!!
OMG all rounded explanation about vit. C. I owe you, Michelle!
Thank you! ❤️
Great topic and I love the way you try to completely cover the different aspects of it. 👍🏻😄
Yep that ^ TEWL from your skin dissolves the ascorbic acid crystals which allows the AA to absorb into skin.
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience so, would this mean that these type or AA would increase TEWL? Or just taking advantage of the water that we normally lose to dissolve the AA without increasing TEWL? 🤔🙏🏼
@@CieloSkin they just take advantage of it
Love this style of informative video on a specific ingredient. Would love the same on peptides
I LITERALLY BEEN WAITING FOR AN UPDATED VITAMIN C GUIDE. I HOPE YOU CAN MAKE SUGGESTION FOR DRUGSTORE/AFFORDABLE VITAMIN C FOR ME AND THOSE PEOPLE WHO CAN'T AFFORD EXPENSIVE BRANDS.
Where is the second video about the other forms of vitamin c?
Is part 2 coming soon (I hope)? Love your vids!
Omg i have been wondering why the collars of my shirts look like I've been shedding makeup but i haven't been wearing makeup since quarantine started! Thank you so much, I don't feel crazy anymore.
For anyone wondering... I diluted The Ordinary's powder L-ascorbic acid in a liquid form of centella asiatica, and I noticed the tanning product rub off effect about halfway through the powder bottle.
Can anyone share the link for part 2 can’t find it
Can someone share the link of part 2?
I can't find part 2. Does anyone have a link?
Thank you, exactly what I needed! Used the TheOrdinary Serum you've mentioned so far, but didn’t know I could use it with Niacinamide (which is my holy grail). It’s a bit heavy, but I get results and it’s inexpensive. Thought about switching to a different product, but first I'll wait for part 2 of this series.
I can't find part 2 anywhere 😢
Same
Thank you for this helpful guide. Did you ever make part 2? I can't seem to find part 2 anywhere on your channel.
Where is part 2?
Is vit c the only antioxidant that helps collagen production?
Vitamin A is the best for that and yes it's an antioxidant.
Thank you so much. I finished my current vitamin C + E serum so I've been looking for something else.
If I had to choose I'd pick tretinoin too! But I use both ^_^
I agree with Michelle. Why choose ? Use them both. ^^
It’s been so long since part 1 I almost thought part 2 existed at some point and then was deleted -.-
I love the Lab Muffin Matrix!!
Thank you! I feel like it isn't quite complete, I might add packaging to the formula column too... 🤔
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience Oh I like that idea!
Naturium has a c derivative thx, is this good?
FINALLY! The video I’ve been waiting for!! 😍😍😍😍 Thank you! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
You’re welcome 😊
Hi Michelle love your channel I was wondering have you ever done a part two on the vitamin c derivatives I feel like I seen the video floating around somewhere but can’t find it
Thx for explaining this very important anti-oxidant.
Living for the Halloween cat top, Michelle! Thank you for the informative video (per usual)
How do you feel about MaeLove vitamin C ? It’s the one I use so far I really like it… but do you think it is formulated correctly to increase collagen?
Nice, Michelle a.k.a DA Lab Muffin is back to teach us more lessons 😎
I love how you educate and entertain us at the same time
Very informative! Looking forward to Part II ! Thank you, Michelle !!
I made the DIY formula of the vitamin C serum and it did burn my face lol also it constantly got contaminated. Preparing skincare in my kitchen was a really bad idea lol. I'll stick to a manufactured product unless I have access to a lab to make my own skincare.
Hi Michelle 😊, could you do a test of how oxidized vit c (ascorbic acid) work after their dark coloration?. I saw a brand Matteroffact says in their website that they have done tests and even if the serum changes of color, it's still effective. I hope you can see this 🎉
