I lost my best friend last year. I rescued him almost 4 years ago. No one wanted him from the shelter because he was already an older dog. He was an amazing companion, and I still cry sometimes when I think of him. They are the most loving creatures and we will love them back always

I'm a Trauma ICU nurse - I see people die all the time. When my Diesel, black lab 11yr old, got sick this summer.. Bleeding tumor in his abdomen... there was nothing I could do. It hit me so hard. I analyzed why.. Those were human vs. a dog. He was more than a dog, my companion. Never complained, with me by my side through some of the BEST years and the WORST years... he was always there. 1/3 of my life. It meant a lot to me. I feel ya.
My father met this girl who took off 2 weeks when her husband died and 6 months off when her dog died. Sometimes animals just get ahold of our hearts. Probably because there so innocent and all they want is for us to be happy.

Ollie was a family member of 15 years - as in Will was a wee lad of 11-13 (not sure how old Will is) when Ollie entered his life.

He used the word friend in the title but trust me, being alongside my dog with a comparable timeline to Will, that pet is literally the closest thing you will get to having a child as a teenager/young adult. Now imagine around half the pain a parent must feel when losing their child and then also imagine that scenario in the mind of a young adult that has had that dog for more than he has not. I know you didn't mean it that way but using "oh it's just a dog" is very fucking disrespectful. You can't think of it that way because logically you are so wrong it actually hurts me physically.
