  • I am NOT saying these are the RIGHT things to do. These are some tricks of the trade I have seen at multiple restaurants I've worked at. If you are allergic to caffeine, please always tell your server or bartender when ordering Ginger Ale. Thanks and enjoy!

I did the "they" trick at a very small printing company I once worked for. I was the only one in the office that morning and answered a call from a pissy distributor who decided I'd done something wrong because she couldn't get her order faster (which was physically impossible.) She asked to be transferred to the graphics department (which was also me) so I said "Ok!" put her on hold, waited a while, then answered again. I didn't even change my voice but she immediately went into a tirade about how horrible "that other girl" had been to her and I was like "Oh my god, that's awful, I'm so sorry that happened to you! I'll have a conversation with her immediately and let her supervisor know!" She bought it hook line and sinker. Entitled people are fun to fuck with. 😄

Did that back in highschool when principal wanted to speak with my dad over a couple cheesesticks I was accused of "stealing" during lunch ( for w/e reason cheesesticks were kept on ice and I would put them in my pockets so they'd be ready to string apart when it was time to munch on em, hadn't even gotten through the line to the register before an old haggard lunch "lady" flipped out saying I was a thief bc of this and sent me to the office).
Had a no BS father who would have lost his shit had he heard the tiniest iota of this, so such could not happen. I called up talked for a minute hollered for "daddd!" rustled the phone a bit and deepened my voice ever so ...
By the time our hour and like 20 minute convo was over my father and principal were the best of friends, related on how difficult it was raising boys in this day and age, but what a godsend extra curricular activities were to keeping them occupied and out of trouble, how both were looking on the wrestling team and so on and so forth.
When all was said and done everyone wondered why our principal went out of his way in the halls to give me high-fives and ask how I was doing, and ofc- how my father was 😈😎🤣

Yeah, it might "work" in the moment, but it also teaches them to do it again. Because as far as they're concerned, what THEY did "worked". What they take away from that conversation is, "If I get really angry, someone will fawn over me and make me feel special and important. If I lie about whoever I'm mad at, they'll get in trouble, making me feel powerful."
I mean, yeah, at that point they're already a problem you can't really solve on your own, but reinforcing it isn't great.

I think I've done every one of these with the exception of the fraudulent ginger ale. Another good way to get rid of campers (a human behavior I don't understand) is start swishing that carpet sweeper back-and-forth right next to their table. It's passive-aggressive, I know, but IDK why we can't just ask the guests to kindly bugger off.

Someone starts sweeping right next to my table isn't gonna last very long trust me. & as far as camping I usually eat & leave but you never know someone's situation. I've went out with friends & family I haven't seen in a long time & knowing when we leave we're going our separate ways. It's one thing if there's people waiting to be seated, but when the restaurant is 1/2 empty & I'm paying $40 for a meal & like $10 for a tip I'll throw a fucking tent up if I want.

Yeah, as a customer, I don't mind being told this directly. "Sir, we have another group waiting, or it's closing time."
Me and my buddy once entered this random greasy spoon during a road trip, during night (no other places were open for dinner), and we were the only people there. So we were having a nice meal, normally, and after done, we noticed everyone was giving us death-stares.
And when we were outside the place, one of the servers came up behind us said, "Sir, don't take this personally, but it is really unfair for you to stay 30 minutes past our closing time."
I was like - "What? Why didn't you tell us while ordering that you close in X minutes? We would have eaten faster, or only ordered what is immediately available in the kitchen."
And she was like - "We are not allowed to do that."
And my buddy agreed with her saying - "Oh yeah, I would consider that very rude, is a server said that to me."
      This doesn't make any sense.

There is always one table of ladies who sit for hours (you can always predict the table) that are so involved in their conversation that they don't realize they commandeered their server's real estate the entire night for a $6 tip for a glass of wine and a salad with dressing on the side. The restaurant closed 1 hour after they paid and the staff are standing in the kitchen saying bad things about them because we want to mop the floor and go home. When they finally say, "Oh! I think they are closed. We should go"... They stroll into the parking lot and stand next to their cars for 20 more minutes talking about who knows what, as the lights shut off and crickets are starting the nightly chirp session. It's frustrating and hilarious (as long as you are not the closer).

Barney is correct. Nocebo and placebo are not defined by the active or passive role of the administrator, they are defined by the positive or negative expectations of the recipient.
The person felt the temperature improve even though it wasn't changed is an example of the placebo effect because the person expected their condition to improve.
If a person expected a waiter to give them poor service, the service they received was fine, yet they still felt it was poor service, then that would be an example of the nocebo effect.
