  • We traveled to Longwood Garden in the past on this channel, but was not there at the right time to do a proper tour of the conservatory and new orchid house. Luckily, we had an opportunity to come back before the crowds to do a great tour. Orchid House to come in a subsequent episode.

    Omg, I love Karl. Most times I find the managers of conservatory’s a bit odd or shy, not very energetic but Karl is wonderful and funny. He makes me want to visit this beautiful place and go often. Thank you for sharing this video with us all.

Karl needs his own channel here. His love and enthusiasm for what he does just oozes out of him with every words, every turn you guys take and it shows at the garden. I love that our Wood's Cycad is just out and about instead of caged up like it is in Thailand. And the peppery smelling Cinnamon Wattle is another favorite! I'll miss it this year, but I'm happy to get to see it getting some love here! And I smile every time I hear the water bell in the children's garden. It's a comfort sound.

    I love this guys energy but I find myself conflicted. Chad from Fairchilds he has said more than once in his tours how if you take care of your plant it can live a long time. To this conservatory who likes to change out plants frequently. I can appreciate keeping the publics interest. Then a part of me feels sad thinking of the plants getting churned for compost.

    • @pi2080
      @pi2080 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Same. He kept avoiding the topic at first, then said the plants only get composted if they're really done for. I'm having a hard time believing that, after a few weeks max??? They could do sales, or just giving them away for free instead of throwing them out. What a waste :(

    A beautiful space without a doubt, but unsure how I feel about the rate at which plants are replaced or destroyed. I understand the appeal of having dynamic spaces, but at what financial and ethical cost. I feel like a seasonal change of display at minimum would have an equally desirable effect and you would have a better feel of natural transition, rather than “every few weeks”. It feels like change for the sake of change. Exquisitely curated nonetheless.

    • @giardinodialberi8751
      @giardinodialberi8751 ปีที่แล้ว

      You raise some interesting points. Bear in mind we saw only a small part of Longwood, the indoor "Display Garden" part that thrills us with other-worldly colorful glory that just ain't happening outdoors during a long gray winter. We visited none of the spectacular gardens outdoors, which do ratchet down the replacement frequency to a "seasonal change of display" as you suggest. If you consider the wasted produce that tens of thousands of supermarkets discard regularly, and unsold plants tossed down the compactor chute at thousands of the home improvement stores, then I hope you agree it's all relative. What you don't see even as a frequent visitor to Longwood, is their ongoing efforts for sustainability; you would be proud to see the large solar farm on their land as you exit via the flyover to the main road. Also, beneath the Main Fountain Garden, a geothermal heating system lengthens the season that they can operate the jets and feature exciting displays for more weeks in the year. And recently Longwood has planted thousands of native orchids in an energetic conservation effort.

      If you followed along, he never actually answered her question. I was a gardener and specialty grower for a botanical garden and so many people lost their jobs just for asking the same question. Answer: perfectly beautiful plants -even organic vegetables are piled up in giant dumpsters weekly for the “changeouts” and then taken to a landfill where they emit methane as they decompose amongst all the other non organic wastes.

    I just love Longwood Gardens. I grew up taking every relative that visited from the UK (they love their gardens). This was formally a private DuPont estate. I'm so glad it's open to the public. Every season of the year they provide lovely walk through tours. The conservatory is huge and beautiful. The Italian type gardens with the koy ponds are wonderful. Christmas is always like a wonderland. It's true that it is sometimes frustrating trying to enjoy because there is so many people. You can't relax when it's heel to toe visitors. Still worth the visit.

    Yes, he is very colourful, thank goodness. I wonder if they keep a photo album, of each color festival. Good that Flock can document these moments in time.

    Such a stunning place. I was lucky enough to visit a few times when living in Delaware and even an event at night, WOW. The work and dedication continues to impress. Thank you for the visit.

    It sure is a glorious garden that I need to visit, especially since it is not to far. I personally would love to see a bit more of the craziness of plants allowed to grow in place and adapting to each others’ space instead of just replacing them like legos. For my taste those “flaws” would take it from “near perfection” as he described to perfection. But I haven’t finished watching yet and maybe there is a room that is more like that as well.

      There are a few areas that have established plantings. The corners of the entrance area with huge angiopteris evecta and terminalia. The childrens garden gets very overgrown. It is rn, and due for a changeout. I agree that it would be fun to see more!

    I really enjoy your videos ! I've been going to Longwood since I was little. When I first caught the orchid bug, my parents would bring their books and sit on the benches so I could spend over an hour looking at the orchids . I also enjoy the Roberto Burle Marx garden and the rose gardens as well as seeing their fabulous chalice vine. I've even seen the orchid growing areas behind the scenes. I started growing orchids when was 14 and lived right down the street on Bodine Road from, Michael Bowell, who you featured on another one of your videos- which encouraged me to reach back out to him and we reconnected for the first time since 1998. So your video got us to reconnect again and I was the youngest member of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Orchid Society when I was 15.
    I now live in Charlotte, North Carolina and finally realized my dream of having a greenhouse/ sunroom built for my orchids and plant collections- begonias, African violets, cyclamen bromeliads and a few other odds and ends- which is attached to my condominium. Outside the greenhouse is my rose garden where I grow 65 hybrid tea roses in containers as well as keep carnivorous plants and bonsai trees. I currently teach 7th grade science at one of the larger public middle schools in the Charlotte area.
    I also have nine densely planted tropical fish tanks. Anyway, sorry for the long story. I would have sent you a private message but did know how to do that. If you're ever down to Charlotte area, I'd love to show you around the plant delights of the area and more.
    I have a TH-cam channel as well which includes several videos I took with my phone at Longwood under Alexander Scharnberg.
