    I’m a Catholic who grew up in Northern Ireland and my grandfather nearly died at the Dunkirk evacuation,
    Going down on the hMS Lancastria. I must say, I do feel empathy for Stone in a strange way but Catholics contributed to the fight against Hitler too. His commander, who I believed was John McMichael, used to visit a house next to us and I would meet him on the street from time to time. He came across as a gentleman. Life is so, so strange

I didn’t know him personally but would pass him in the mornings (in my catholic school uniform) and he was really, really pleasant: I mean, just like a real nice man. Nor what you would imagine. He had some progressive views though. He came out with some common sense plan or something which was about some kind of peace deal…..I really don’t remember. I heard that that is why he was killed….because he wanted a way forward. I’m going from memory here. Then one night, a couple of days before Xmas we heard the bomb go off. He lived in a nice estate about a mile away…..Hilden Court I think. They killed him with a car bomb. I have a lot of respect for his son Gary though. I think Gary McMichael is a good man

    I truly cannot fathom how a man attacking civilians at a funeral indiscriminately could be cast as a hero, regardless of what side you're on. I know it's easy for me to say that now, decades later, but my god what madness.

    I really hope soon that all Catholic and Protestant brothers unite against mass immigration in the British Isles. Protestants living in Irish land is not great and as a Brit I am ashamed of the way we treated Ireland. We went over, and we took.
    There has been nice history too. Many Irish escaped the famine and came to Britain. They established communities in Liverpool and Manchester and many other places.
    But all this tit for tat, as sad and frustrating as it is, is absolutely nothing in the face of immigration. They are taking over, and milking the system to death. Millions and millions of people with no money no skills and ten kids that the government breastfeeds. They drain the system and do not integrate. It’s a much bigger problem than anything in Northern Ireland. It makes the Troubles look romantic.
    Love and peace to all my Catholic and Protestant brothers and sisters. I write this with deep concern for all of our futures.

    • @LBALucas111
      @LBALucas111 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @S.K 123 an innocent civilian is someone who has no affiliation with any organisation no agenda and in general is not involved
      Everybody in attendance at that funeral was an IRA supporter, and if you declare you're support to an organisation like the PIRA (which didnt adhere to any rules of war neither paramilitary organisation did) you forfeit the right to call yourself a civilian.

    • @LBALucas111
      @LBALucas111 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @S.K 123 I think you'll find that is exactly how it works, let me explain
      Theres no evidence they supported the IRA? Come on, why would you be in attendance at an IRA funeral if you didnt support them, it defeats the purpose of going, the whole idea of attending a funeral in general is to show your support.
      Whether they were combatants or not is irrelevant, you need to put it into perspective. They might not have been combatants but if you support the combatant who carry out the atrocities and acts of violence, then you may as well be a combatant, so what difference does it make.
      The conflict in N Ireland is not even remotely comparable to Britain vs Germany in ww2 especially in terms of what it was about (the people supporting ridding the world of tyranny and fascism) and the way it was fought
      And no your wrong the Irish Republican paramilitaries killed far more people than any other organisation during the Troubles. British army killed around 300, Republicans killed 1500 plus people.
      cain.ulster.ac.uk/issues/violence/deaths.htm
      A good cause?, their cause wasnt just against the security forces, their cause was to wage war on the Protestant community and intimidate them into a United Ireland by force, theybwere equally as sectarian as their loyalist counterparts anyone who says otherwise is being naive or deliberately obtuse.

    As a protestant from a loyalist family in Enniskillen, I find this man a disgusting figure. The fact he pretends he carried out his cemetery attack in revenge for the Enniskillen Bombing shows how much of a psychotic hypocrite he is. When he talks of his actions you can tell he only wanted to be famous and didn't care about anyone else in the protestant community.

      @ULSTERISBRITISH 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I come from a family long Stept in military service for over 100 years in service of king/queen and country and carry such deep respect for eniskillen.
      But not for people like you diminish the role played by loyalists in the troubles then have a cheek to call yourself a loyalist not too mention the putrid way your on here pandering to republicans with your " oh look how above it I am". And I'm not referring to the gangs and thugs now a days who try and call themselves loyalists. I'm talking of the everyday men and women who took up the fight against the IRA when no one else would including our government who made our soldiers fight the ira with basically their hands tied which gave the scummy IRA legitimacy allowing them to falsely claim they were a match for the British army. A lot of loyalists gave up their freedom and some their lives to take up that fight. But because of knobs like you preaching from your arm chair are aiding in the effort to falsely resign loyalists to history as scum.
      Regardless of this man's motivation of why he did it, few others would have dared. He walked with precession and sat in the chapel with them. He then carried out a ballsy which whether you agreed with the methods or not was the turning point in a war which at the time seemed the ira couldn't be heat.
      But he showed loyalists we didn't have to be afraid of the IRA and in fact could take the fight to them.
      His actions inspired a new generation of loyalists who , hate them or love them turned our paramilitaries from drinkers and back alley beaters who had little or no logistical capability of fighting the white to people who while maybe brutal became organisations who by the end of the troubles had the IRA hammered and whether some want to admit or not were a big reason why the IRA started what they called peace but was a tactical surrender.
      You I notice didn't call the IRA psychos or blood thirsty etc??
      Why should their war be more significant a d legitimate than the loyalist struggle???
      Go educate yourself a bit rather than pander too and lick the hole of a republican and worse one who calls himself a protestant Irish republican!!!!!
      Go bury your head in shame

    Danny Morrison being a little disingenuous with his summary of why there was no RUC or Army presence at the funerals. The IRA had agreed through the local Catholic Church that there would be no paramilitary trappings (gun salutes, balaclava'd men etc) and in return the RUC/Army agreed to stay away, monitoring the funeral instead by helicopter. No doubt that Stone took this as an opportunity but that doesn't mean there was collusion.

    Stone wasn't alone in carrying out atrocities. Both sides did it, named individuals carried out attacks that murdered innocent men, women and children. The only difference with Stone was that it was captured virtually live on the telly and his name went around the world, otherwise it would just be another dark chapter in The Troubles that disappeared into history. The Corporal Killings happening later on. Crazy dark times! I was a soldier in Belfast in the 80s and 90s. I can name a few republicans who were just as bad as Stone. But I can also name Loyalists who were the same. Bad as each other.

The opinion I've formed basically agrees with everything you've said Northern Ireland is your birthright. Ulster Scots have been there for hundreds of years. You've cultivated that land and shed a great amount of blood to defend it. That alone makes you the rightful owner of Ulster. What we today know as Ireland didn't exist until a century ago. Historically speaking there has never been a "united" Ireland. There is no legitimacy to the claim that Ulster belongs to the Irish Republic.

    He was a Catholic by birth, adopted by a Protestant family. His adoptive mother had a deep hatred for Catholics and psychologically tortured young Michael for his Catholicism - like as if he had a choice in the matter! (Reminds me of that even bigger dirtbag, Lenny Murphy, leader of the Shankill Butchers, who got a hard time as a kid for _his_ 'Catholic' surname.) People who knew him as a kid say he was widely shunned because of his proclivity for torturing animals. He was in the cadets for like, 10 minutes and probably never handled a functional, never mind loaded, firearm in uniform. It's said that the Provos were the first organisation he tried to join - and they wouldn't have him. There are those characters who were created by the disfunctional environment of Northern Ireland... And there are characters that could not have thrived _outside_ of a disfunctional environment like Northern Ireland. The question is, which of those characters are Michael Stone?!

    How does Northern Ireland ever truly get past all of this ? Something that started centuries ago. I think a lot of people comment on this without really knowing what they are talking about. It's so tragic ...the lives lost on both sides. I think before people comment on this , they should look into history and how this had all started . I have never even been to Ireland , but I made the effort to educate myself on the Troubles and the history behind it all. It was actually a very difficult situation that went beyond territory or religion. Growing up in 80s England , you're only ever shown one side of the story. I think it's so sad that so many lives were harmed by the conflict. I always wonder if it will ever truly be over ? Is it still simmering ? I wonder how people have managed to move on ? Anybody on here have personal experience of this ?

      +Tommy Smith that has nothing to do with colour and everything to do with religion and the ridiculous behaviour that people exhibit in the name of 'God'. The young men who brutally murdered Lee Rigby were not born into Muslim families . They converted to Islam , just as many other white people have converted to Islam . They could have been white. The colour of their skin was not at the root of their actions . I happen to be white , by the way , - I'm also a staunch anti-theist. I believe the world would be far far better off without religion - returning to the matter of the Troubles ... I know religion wasn't the ONLY factor - but it was a huge one ... You have to wonder what would have happened if there never was a Catholic Church or an Anglican Church ....

      Stone, 54, is seeking to overturn his convictions for trying to murder Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness in 2006.

      Mr Pownall told judges: "What he was claiming he was going to achieve, namely entering into the assembly, the deployment of bombs and then the use of knives to slit the throats of Adams and McGuinness was, although he wasn't prepared to admit it at the time, impossible to achieve.
      "He was bluffing it out, boasting. He knew that his intentions as asserted to police were impossible to achieve." ....*In other words a FAILURE*

      @@steveperry8031 and this must say it all about why we Brits have kept him locked up until "at least 2024"
      He had been jailed for a 1988 gun and grenade attack on an IRA funeral at Milltown Cemetery, west Belfast in which three men were killed.
      Stone sat impassively throughout today's judgment after being escorted into court on a walking stick.
      Before being returned to custody he shouted: "The truth will out, gentlemen, believe me."
