This is the rival who actually cared about your Pokemon and _asked_ if you were willing to have a friendly battle.

This is also the douchey, condescending, pathetic rival who snarkily insists you give a shit about them and pretends they're better than you the whole game despite them putting in the bare minimum effort and losing to you constantly. They get salty whenever you beat them, but unlike Silver where he's straight up about it they act two faced just so they can keep their condescending attitude (this is shown in Emerald where you beat your rival and they act all cool about it but Scott says they were red in the face and fuming when he saw them biking away lol). They clearly just resent the player because you're not a massive disappointment to Professor Birch like they are. They don't even evolve their starter and then just fucking give up at Lilycove with zero badge attempts. They never even help you fight the evil team, Steven has to do that. Some friend. They do nothing throughout the game and give up way before your adventure is over, then suddenly show up when you become the champion to hog the credit like they mattered at all to you or your journey. They don't even get an original design, just recycled from the unpicked player character. Worst rival character in the series. Hop is unironically a way better rival than Brendan/May, which is terrifying. He has a character arc and everything. Gen 3 should have entirely focused on my boy Wally instead of barely using him and not even giving him a battle theme, he got straight robbed.
Honestly, they were going for a "friend" rival in gen 3, but accidentally created a character way more unlikable than Green and Silver combined. I almost wonder if Brendan/May are insufferable on _purpose,_ if so then Game Freak truly are geniuses at writing rivals.

also in pokemon crystal. lyra was originally with kris. if you chose kris as your character ethan would be your friend. if you were ethan. kris would be your friend. Which basically means she is the girl next door aka the original girl next door.

my favorite theme from this amazing game.
This theme has become my eternal Route 110 nightmare.
I made 2 mistakes in my playthrough:
1. Picked Treecko instead of Torchic
2. Leveled only Treecko and none of my other Pokemon.
The result? I have to now level all of my other bad Pokemon using only wild Pokemon, since my extremely overleveled Grovyle dies in two hits to May's Combusken.

Love this theme and it's connection to the Ever grande city theme. Best/favorite one for me is very very probably Route 119! Takes me on a journey
But there are so many precious moments in this soundtrack that it's not an easy choice! Game Corner theme is soo good as well. Even the poke-mart theme, my gosh

@@Rickbone1055 It's a shame when the new games stop resonating though, because I don't just re-play RPG games like I replay platformers. They're largely one-and-done experiences for me, and I continued to love Pokemon all the way from Red/Blue/Yellow up to Black 2/White 2. After X/Y greatly disappointed me, I decided that Alpha Sapphire would be my final game in the series, because even though I knew it'd disappoint me it's still the remake of my favorite game in the entire series so I owed it the honor of being my final destination with the series.
Watching games like Lets Go turn hyper-casual and Sword/Shield have horrible graphics/removed features/subpar music only reinforced my confidence that OR/AS was the right stopping point for me with the series, because I stopped before I could have any bad experiences with Pokemon. I wish I could say the same for Sonic and I wish I had stopped with Generations, but I kept going, and now after Lost World, Boom, and Forces, I pretty much hate Sonic

@@meltedelevator I'd probably only pick up a Diamond/Pearl remake and Black/White remake on a basis of nostalgia.
Alpha Sapphire/Omega Ruby inherited a lot of the aspects of X/Y that I didn't like, but it was still a journey through the region of Hoenn again (R/S/E and Hoenn being my favorite generation and region), and Let's Go inherited awful mechanics from the GO mobile game, but it was still a full-fledged journey through Kanto again.
I'd be fairly willing to put up with bad mechanics or even graphical inadequacies just for one more journey through Sinnoh and Unova again.
