I agree that ECBP definitely changed after 2020 but I did go back to my A121 batch to try it again, and it's still way better than what Heaven Hill is putting out today.
12 year C922 was very nutty, and I’ve had 8 year single barrel ECBPs that’s all dark fruit and no nut. The age statement isn’t the issue, it’s just the blending (probably because they are using more barrels than they use to, so the batches can be bigger and sell more bottles)
My blood pressure always goes up when you spin the Julie Like Wheel of Confusion.....they are going to fall off. But also just hearing the name Julie Like does it as well. Cheers Matt!
This matches my experience, too. ECBP was also my entree to whiskey (about 14 or 15 years ago) and A121 is where it really started to lose me. I've had a few ECPBs (under 10 years of age) that reminded me of the pirate bottles, but I'd have to say that the past 3 years or so has seen a shift in Heaven Hill stuff in general to a profile that is less in my wheelhouse than it used to be. The one exception is probably Larceny BP, which seems to be improving a bit year-on-year.
I know they've changed, but I was able to get B524 for a very good price, especially for NYC (~$63) so I bought my first one ever. I've wanted one ever since I found your channel when I first started getting into whiskey you said that you love(d) them, but I've never found one for a price I was comfortable paying. But I thought I'd buy this one as an homage to you and as a little thank you for helping me get into whiskey!
What are they doing with their good barrels now? They don't have anything now that can even hold a candle to the ECBP releases from 2013-2016 and even their limited stuff now is no better than the 2017-2020 ECBP. Heaven Hill used to release some of the best bourbon ever made and now everything they release is a disappointment
I would say to isolate the variable of then vs. now you'd have to do a broader blind. I find a lot of run to run variance with ECBP. B524 for example is very different than A124 and imo matches well with your tasting notes for this older ECBP.
Fo sho!!! There is a store in WV that did a EC Barrel pick for 8, 9, and 10 yrs that I need to grab. Will be curious to see what the difference will be in the ages.
Me too, me too, me too!!! ECBP A120 was the whiskey that really got me all the way in to bourbon, and ECBP has ever since been like "coming home" to me. I've got to say, though, that there has been a pall over the bottle ever since I bought a case of what turned out to be "the bad" laser code version of C923...which in fact tasted nothing like the rave reviews I was hearing. BTW...I still have an unopened bottle of A120...
My wife and I did the Heaven Hill Experience last week it was okay and we both filled bottels however my wife filled ECBP Y924 and I Larceny Y824 , a few days later I sampled both bottels and I must say the Larceny wasn't bad thou not quite release level, but the ECBP was just undrinkable and I had to pay for the bottels . This was the first time I ever had a bad experience with a Heaven Hill product and I was very dissapointed I had to pour out a glass of Bourbon, i cannot believe that past quality control and I am a longtime ECBP drinker and collector still have a bottel from 2019 and this was a schocker.
Same. I have a crap-ton of ECBP going back to 2017. Recently cracked the A124 and will be pouring it for the less desirable guests in the basement pub.
There is a very good chance, that in ~2016 they started using different/lower quality barrels. So, if that is the case, they have very few barrels to use that are pre-2016, for new ECBP batches or SiB.
Just depends on the blend and the single barrels at this point. Bought a 12 year single barrel 135 proof just the other day that I blinded to a 2022 GTS and it crushed it!
Make ECBP Great Again I hated A121 when it first came out and I thought it was me. I actually didn’t buy a couple batches after that but did eventually start again because it was still good for $60 just not what it had been. Interesting that you also found a line in the sand around 2021 where it changed for you. I still have some C batches from 2018 and 2019 that I’m even more afraid to finish now!
I dunno, im a huge ecbp guy, I bought b524 and was pretty happy. Edit- i just did a side by side with c920 and b524. I can barely tell the difference, other than that the 920 was higher proof. But im not a worlds best taster, lol.
Where do I find this Cody guy! I was fortunate to pick up ECBP B520 & C920 for 85.00 each less than a year ago and they’re great! MAKE ECBP GREAT AGAIN!!!! Cheers!
I totally agree with you that ECBP has degraded in quality. It’s still a high quality bourbon, but not what it used to be. 2018 was when I started getting into bourbon, and ECBP is what did it for me. Once I had A121 I was surprised at the drop in enjoyment, but still bought B124 and C921 hoping it would do the trick. C921 is what made me stop buying ECBP for a couple years. Bring back the dark jammy fruit notes again! Make ECBP again!
Make ECBP great again! (actually don't have a dog in this fight - never tried ECBP except I do have C920 that I'm waiting for a special occasion to crack)
Don’t worry Matt we’re all a little mad (crazy) here lol. I didn’t get a chance to taste the older ECBP batches, and the first one I got to taste was the B524. Frankly it was pretty good to me but then again I don’t have the base line that you do. I think I saw an A121 recently but didn’t buy it because another video I saw said everything after the pandemic was junk, and the first good batch was C923. How I wish I could back and pick that up, but cest la vie. What’s your take on the B524? Great video, cheers 🥃
I'm not a HH fan in general, but I still love the WTWT hot take and calling out ECBP for hosing down the consumer! Give WTWT what he wants (and maybe a TrackHawk to make up for it)!
Yep, very unfortunate. A123 was the last batch I've enjoyed. I'm stockpiling old batches, including pirate bottles since they level up 2017-2020 releases imo. I don't foresee this changing, Beam and Jack have been crushing it and leaving HH in the dust
I just got into the bourbon game about a year ago, and I haven't had the privilege of trying any ECBP's pre-2021. All I have to set the standard by is C923, which I'm guessing is the closest thing to the earlier ECBP's. None of the other releases since 2020 have come close. So with that being said: MECBPGA!
I bought the A batch this year of ECBP and it was tasty, super crushable, but wasn't overly memorable. When I saw both the B&C batch this year was only 11 years old and lower proof I got irritated and am letting the other two batches this year sit on the shelf. The only way we as bourbon consumers can make products better is by speaking with how we spend our money and until we do that they will continue to make mediocre product because it will sell.
Hopefully they go back and 10 years from know it will be back to the teens EC. Also double SJ is rookie #’s & you know it! Don’t try 8 Viski’s unless you want to lose a few…okay 4 to be exact.
Get some air that A120 had a chance for 4 years. Not fair to compare dregs to a full bottle i.m.o. especially a high proofer they tend to flatten out when the bottle gets that low after about 3 months.
Make ecbp great again! Full disclosure, I haven't found one of their whiskeys that I really loved. I have been to the heaven Hill distillery and even made my own mixed bottle per their class. But somehow Elijah Craig just doesn't inspire me the way I'd like it to. I have not tried their barrel proof yet. That particular delight has eluded me until now. Hopefully I get to try the real thing. For now though, my tastes firmly lie within the Buffalo Trace. Bryce family of amazing bourbons. Even that whiskey that they're selling travelers. That's pretty tasty stuff. Key producing great content. I love watching it
A123 was my last batch. As soon as they dropped the 12 year age statement I lost interest. Never found a C923. There are too many store picks out there and they’re way too expensive and underaged. I avoid ECBP like the plague. Larceny BP has not been hitting me either this year. Really stinks I use to really love ECBPs up until they dropped their quality. Make ECBP great again!!!
MAKE ECBP GREAT AGAIN! ECBP is much more available than it has been in the past. It’s still good like you said but the shine has worn off. My local store has had B524 in stock since July.
Make ECBP great again!!! Spot on. The newer batches aren’t bad, they’re just not what it was or could be. And they’re selling it at the same price. Not cool. No thanks.
Im lucky my palette sucks I guess cause they've been delicious to me the last few years. age statement or not. some of the best store picks i've ever had were young EC picks.
There's a definite color difference between the two...but that could entirely be attributed to the 2+ year age difference....there is also nearly a 20 proof point difference as well...I think C923 would have been a better comparison in both proof and age, particularly since you imply that age is the primary contributing factor in the change of the profile. Instead, to "test" your theory that the profile has shifted...you quite literally chose lowest proof and youngest ECBP ever released with A124...Well, no shit there's a difference between the two!!!

Brain Fart. The Batch the profile changed was A121 not C921. Im sure nobody will point that put in the comments 😂
I agree that ECBP definitely changed after 2020 but I did go back to my A121 batch to try it again, and it's still way better than what Heaven Hill is putting out today.

Yes make ECBP great again I miss those older releases so much. They pulled us back in with the 923 then shat on us with the 124
Yes, yes, yes, you are absolutely right, completely agree, make ECBP great again
One side says "blend back better", the other says "make ECBP great again". I just want results. 🌙
My blood pressure always goes up when you spin the Julie Like Wheel of Confusion.....they are going to fall off. But also just hearing the name Julie Like does it as well. Cheers Matt!

I've heard Larceny BP is getting better, but I didn't like the one I had a few years ago. Maybe I'll have to change that now!
Good to see you so calm and reserved for a change.
I'm a big fan of people thinking that ECBP isn't great any longer. Makes it really easy and relatively cheap to find every batch.
I have a couple bottles of C920 left, but none of the older batches. I'll have to crack one soon...
What are they doing with their good barrels now? They don't have anything now that can even hold a candle to the ECBP releases from 2013-2016 and even their limited stuff now is no better than the 2017-2020 ECBP. This is very true, and accurate. But, if you’ve had the majority of offerings from ‘19 on or so….you don’t need to do the experiment, unfortunately.
Fo sho!!! There is a store in WV that did a EC Barrel pick for 8, 9, and 10 yrs that I need to grab. Will be curious to see what the difference will be in the ages.
C921 was my first ECBP and I loved it. I think I was able to pick up an A119, but haven't tried it yet (or any pre-'21 batch)...
I’m just here for the Matt “wow’s”.
Me too, me too, me too!!! ECBP A120 was the whiskey that really got me all the way in to bourbon, and ECBP has ever since been like "coming home" to me. Make ECBP Great Again!🥃
9:50 appreciate the thoughtful callback to the ECBP 🏴☠️ bottles
I was lucky to buy 2 C923 bottles last year from Total Wine in LA. Sadly both are gone now, forever my favorite ECBP.
Matt thanks to you, ECBP became my go to pour. I think you put ALLOT of people on to this. We all feel as you do, we want our baby back!
I agree 100% A124 was terrible. I'm hugely disappointed in that bottle.
Same. I have a crap-ton of ECBP going back to 2017. Recently cracked the A124 and will be pouring it for the less desirable guests in the basement pub.

Great moment.... "I miss it...I miss it dearly." I feel you.
Just depends on the blend and the single barrels at this point. Bought a 12 year single barrel 135 proof just the other day that I blinded to a 2022 GTS and it crushed it!
I feel personally attacked
🤷♂️
Good. I would like to be personal with you too. Make ECBP awesomely great again.
Keep the voice of the people loud!
EC C923 was mine so I understand completely. I have an opened one and one unopened. I’ll save it for the I’m old
And dying time lol
Make ECBP Great Again
I hated A121 when it first came out and I thought it was me. I currently have missed making ECBP great again. I do however have a ECBP-18 Year uncracked, waiting for the holiday seasons to kickoff. 👊🇺🇸🧂
I heard a lot of good things about C923 but didn’t get to try it. Is it nowhere near as good as the pre ‘21 bottles?
dude what a positive take on that. Should be ECLE!
The larceny A124 is a banger tho. Wonder whats going in with heaven hill. I guess the C923 was the finale.
Make ECBP great again 😢
They were getting worse before the 12yr age drop
Right. The profile changed with A121
I dunno, im a huge ecbp guy, I bought b524 and was pretty happy.
Edit- i just did a side by side with c920 and b524. I can barely tell the difference, other than that the 920 was higher proof. But im not a worlds best taster, lol.
Matt, do you think single barrels that are 12 plus years old and higher proof will still have the old profile ?
So happy I got 2 C923s
I have ec a124, and b524 and I've never gone back for a second pour , if that says anything
Where do I find this Cody guy! I was fortunate to pick up ECBP B520 & C920 for 85.00 each less than a year ago and they’re great! MAKE ECBP GREAT AGAIN!!!! Cheers!
I thought C923 was supposed to be the vest in years.

Man of the people. We can only hope Heaven Hill is listening. You can’t take the Coca out of Cola without us raging. Make ECBP great again!
Make ECBP great again! (actually don't have a dog in this fight - never tried ECBP except I do have C920 that I'm waiting for a special occasion to crack)
Make PCP great again!!!
Wait, that wasn’t right…
Don’t worry Matt we’re all a little mad (crazy) here lol. I didn’t get a chance to taste the older ECBP batches, and the first one I got to taste was the B524. @11:30 Matt accidentally describes the New Coke fiasco.😅

8 second video today boys. Answer is YES.

😂 Dude you're the BEST!! ...and you're right....
Going from C923 to A124 was a tremendous falloff. I was severely disappointed with A124
A124 tasted like buttered popcorn to me. Not bad, just different.
Amen! Preach it, brother!
Totally agree with you. Its not the same
Make ECBP Great Again! Definitely would like a shirt or a hat. Don't need sneakers or a watch
MAKE ECBP GREAT AGAIN!
ECBP is much more available than it has been in the past. It’s still good like you said but the shine has worn off. My local store has had B524 in stock since July.
uhhh like coke, new coke and now classic coke? best description without actually using the VERY example of what coke did. :D
I noticed a change in their small batch product so I don't buy it any more.
So Matt, for me who only got into whiskey in the past couple years and only knows the new ECBP, how does C923 compare to the “old” ECBP? Just curious
Not to be a dik but thats exactly what he explained in this one
A124 is the readheaded stepchild of the ECBP family
Even the B batch this year is wildly better
Make ECBP great again. Like Larceny BP. Haha!
Agreed!!! Make ECBP great again!!!
MECBPGA 🇺🇸
Yessa!!
But Matt, they did change the recipe for Coca-Cola. They removed the cocaine, and put in high fructose corn syrup.
Make ECBP great again! I’m 100% with you they’re good but not like before.
Unfortunately it’s not going to happen. 😢
MEGA!!
Make ECBP Great Again 🥃🇺🇲
Make ECBP great again!!! Spot on. The newer batches aren’t bad, they’re just not what it was or could be. And they’re selling it at the same price. Not cool. No thanks.
“Rut-beer”
ECBP A124 was the worst batch I have ever tasted 🤢 Make ECBP Great Again!
Make ECBP great again 🦅
Calf kicks 🦵 yessssss......
I have A124. It’s honestly awful and has a funk. I was very disappointed. I went back to it about a month later, and it wasn’t any better.
The flavor is thinned down and more sharp. BS
MEGA 2024

I for one would like to have a word with Cody
Make ECBP Great Again!
Oh, and Cody was also responsible for "New Coke," which Coca Cola called "The Most Memorable Marketing Blunder Ever."
Cody also is hiding the Pappy in the back. 😂
Make ECBP Great Again!!
@ADHDWhiskey - C923 was amazing. How do you explain that????
Im lucky my palette sucks I guess cause they've been delicious to me the last few years. age statement or not. some of the best store picks i've ever had were young EC picks.
Its NEW COKE
Make ECBP Great Again!!!!!
but what about C923
That giant movie Muresan was in was one of the worst movies ever.
Make ECBP GREAT AGAIN!!!
Both? Both. Both is good.
Make ECBP Great Again! #MEGA
