It's fun. My son (he was 22/23 at the time) got me into Whiskey. Since then we did a Kentucky trip and countless other distillery visits in WA, OR, WI, CO. We are looking forward to planning a Scotland / Ireland trip.

Keep up the solid work and making it fun!

It is a good thing that Kurt's spouse is receptive to his affliction for good Bourbon. Allowing for the Basement Bar and probably filling in as lead camera operator provides us all a great past time of keeping up with this dynamic family relationship. Any Michters at the proof they offer for the price point is generally scammie to me. Even the 10 year that’s almost $150 MSRP, being 92 proof is criminal at that price. I liked the Michter’s Toasted Rye but I’d never pay the type of money asked for it

I like seeing a hyped-up bourbon in a blind with others. I've had the opportunity to try a good number of them since bars in my area seem to have some success at keeping them in stock. In general, I find that they are good, but I don't get the sense that they are anything special when compared to others that are a lot more readily available. Not too long ago, I compared Blanton's to Four Roses single barrel, and I found that both were good, but Four Roses was the easy winner - I found greater complexity in Four Roses, and the flavor profile was more in line with my preferences. I've tried Weller 12-year and Van Winkle 12-year Lot B. In both cases, I thought they were good, but they were stylistically unremarkable. They weren't delivering anything special or unique. They were good quality, classic style bourbons - nothing more, and nothing less. It would be hard for me to justify paying more than $80 or so for either one since the typical 12-year 46%, non-chill filtered Scotch has more interesting and complex flavors, and those usually go for around $70. When I see them marked up to hundreds or thousands of dollars, I don't know whether to laugh or choke. The hype has been feeding off itself in a positive feedback loop, and it is absurdly unjustified. Fortunately, there are good alternatives. The Maker's Mark and Old Forester product lines are great options, and their core products are reasonably priced and easy to find. A bottle of Old Forester 1897 bottled in bond is sitting in my collection, and I'm getting plenty of enjoyment out of that bottle.

Last week I did a blind with Buffalo Trace, Blantons, Eagle Rare, and EH Taylor, bottled in bond. At the end they threw in a Benchmark full proof. Nobody knew what we were tasting except for me. Interestingly, EHT came out number one for everyone. Blantons came in third or last. When I threw in the benchmark, everyone put that as number two. Interesting when hype does not influence your taste buds. By the way, your banter is getting goofier all the time. Reminds me of me and my son.

My biggest disappointment was Castle & Key Bourbon. I did the tour of the distillery and the grounds are just so amazing. If you are ever in the area, you should really stop over there. Botanical gardens, pool shaped in a key, Live Music on Wednesdays in summer time, its just really nice. The Bourbon... I picked up in 2022, 100 bottles sold per day, only on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Stood in line on a Saturday morning, got my one bottle and took it home. Man, just not good. The alcohol vapors and bitter taste just don't do it for me. I wonder if they age it for another 3-5+yrs would it be better? I think its only aged 4yrs. My new constants are Makers Mark 46, Woodford Reserve Double Oak, and Angels Envy Port finished. I can get all three of those anywhere now and they are just so good by themselves or even as a mixer. I'm a big fan of that Weller 12 but I think I'm with Kurt, I like the WSR and WOA better.

Trenton, the michters sour mash for $100 limit 1 per person was probably the toasted. It looks exactly the same, so you may not have noticed it was the toasted

I’ve never had Weller 12 but I have had Weller Special Reserve and I would take regular old Makers Mark over it any day of the week.

Reminds me of my old pop (RIP). He would take a pork chop or chicken fried steak and pile mashed potatoes on it, smother the whole thing with gravy and top it off with cream style corn. He thought it was the food of the gods!
Also, love me some Old Forester 100, great stuff!

How I wish I could train my taste buds and palate to adapt to samples of ANYTHING without clearing them in some way, often using a bread product or crackers. It takes talent to do that! I'm the kind who needs to re-boot my taste buds and palate between samples something--especially similar products. If you're tasting samples of "Cheeses," it wouldn't be necessary with a variety. It would be if you're sampling a collection of Bries, or Muensters. Hard for me to pick up subtleties and undertones with distilled spirits without a sensory reset. Nice job, you two!

The first two tastings crack me up. The regular Forester 100 easily beat Weller. A store about 30 minutes from you has both. Their Weller is $900. The Forester is maybe $40ish.
They also have one Elmer T and a Rockhill Farms for maybe $400 each. I’ll pass

Weller 12 had a beautiful nose, which hints at the greatness that bourbon line is capable of (ORVW 10/12, Pappy 15). It's under-proofed. IMO, perfect sipping-whiskey proofing should have the nose be in line with the palate. That proofing isn't 80 and it ain't cask strength (though I love the latter). Glad I only paid $28 for the W12 before the world went insane. I can only laugh at the secondary market prices. Of the Weller's, I prefer the Antique at 107P.
After starting with Maker's Mark and venturing away for a decade, I've come back to it and can really appreciate it now. And it doesn't hurt the distillery has a genuine history (some of it puffed up, I'm sure) and story with interesting, colorful characters. My favorite of theirs is the regular cask strength, though I've met so many people that prefer the 101.
OF100 is a great standby. Old Forester is the backbone of Woodford Reserve and they're both great bourbons. Though, IMO, WR is under-proofed at 90.1. Maybe I should proof it up a bit with OF....

Seems to me Wellers along with Blanton's(my little pony bottle) are both over-hyped and overpriced. OF 100, WT 101, OGD 114, Larceny, ET BIB are my favorites budget bourbons.

The retail price of Weller 12, including high taxes, is $50 give or take. 12 year bourbon, for 50 bucks. Even the distiller knows what it is. Hyped to the moon, think hard people.

Joseph Magnus Cigar Blend.....so disappointing. I took it to my local liquor store and ask the owner and employee's opinions. To a person they all felt sorry for me based on the $$ I spent to get the bottle. I now invest in Knob Creek and Russell's store picks almost exclusively.....haven't been disappointed yet with that strategy!!

So funny Kurt is so worried about being wrong. So worried about looking dumb or whatever the case is. It's just whiskey and things taste different at different times. It's not like school where you're going to get an f. You guys are just having fun drinking whiskey. It's hard to go through life overthinking it haha. Blinds are fun because it exposes your opinion without being influenced. If you ended up loving the cheapest whiskey which in this one you did😂, it's still what tastes good to you regardless of prestige. Wild turkey 101 pretty much decimates most of the more expensive whiskeys. I suppose I would have a lot of the insecurities that Kurt does which is why I see it. But in the end who cares just go through the experience and say what you're going to say. The only people that might judge you are stupid whiskey snobs who really have no life

Weller always will be and always has been a bottom shelf bourbon. Nobody bat an eye at it 8 to 10 years ago until they discovered it uses the same mash bill as Pappy. Now all of a sudden people go crazy for a bottom shelf bourbon just because it's a BT product. I would pick any MM over any Weller any day.

Ok, so I have been following you guys for a while you have great bourbons and good topics,... Just a critique. I think you could have more views, likes and shares, if you focused on the bourbon. You guys go off track so much that I'm constantly either hitting fast forward or just exiting out of the videos. When you are actually drinking and giving your opinion it's great. Your extra, is like 2xs extra. This video shouldn't have been 25 mins long. Again, I think you guys are great, but if you stay on task it would be better. Thanks for what you do.
