Pokémon Abilities That Are The SAME

- Some Abilities in Pokémon are the same as other Abilities. It always made me think....how many Ability clones do we have?
We explore a lot of these in this video and see just how many abilities are just rebranded versions of other ones.

You know for a fact that if Teravolt and Turboblaze were to introduce today, they would slap a 50% boost of Fire or Electric moves respectively. And the kyurem fusions would get shit like 'As One'.
And then nerf it to 40% in the next generation. (But specifically the DLC of the next generation, cause they're not gonna let you use the same pokemon two generations in a row without paying the fee.)
@@normal648340%? Nah, it would be 30% , which Is what happened to Regileki
@@ArlecchinoAKAFather but not regidrago, because dragon is worse than electric
Respectively is backwards here
Since they tease about Unova remakes, maybe they decided to buff both of those ability
Vital Spirit has the hidden ability to make wild Pokémon appear at higher levels. Insomnia doesn’t have this, meaning they’re technically not exact clones… until Gen 8, where this extra functionality was removed for some reason.
Aw man. I was gonna use that trick in Pokemon Violet until you said the functionality was removed in Gen 8. Would have been useful for finding a Level 100 Magikarp in Kitakami.
Gen 8 is the master of removing things for no good reason.
Gonna guess, that is because the Pokémon now spawn in the overworld, so it may contradict with the ability. Almost all of the abilities that affect spawn rate are changed.
wow, i didn't know this at all! apparently it had a 50% chance to make the pokemon that appears in wild grass be in the highest levels of their normal level range, and they also removed it's functionality for fishing in gen5 (idk whether this applies to gen6-7 too...?) i guess i can see why no one ever talks about it... it's easier to just do the repel trick...
7:13 Abilities like Cloud Nine and Unaware are like Looney Tunes. The Pokémon is so undeterred that actual reality fails against their sheer will...or lack of it.
Abomasnow: "Ha! Bet you're freezing in this snowstorm I just summoned, huh?"
Psyduck: "What snow."
Abomasnow: "The snow I just summoned with my Snow Warnin- wait, what happened to the snow?! What did you do?"
Psyduck: _"Psy-yai-yai?!"_
Imagine being so stupid you warp reality.
The move amnesia, which raises sp.def by two stages. Is stated to work by having the pokemon forget an attack happened, reducing its impact.
This is enjoyable
Shadow Tag and Arena Trap are almost the same as well, the difference is that arena trap doesn't work with flying/levitate and ghost mons and Shadow Tag just doesn't work with ghost and opposing shadow tag mons.
Ghosts aren't immune to shadow tag. They're immune to trapping effects in general
@@Matt-oq1srso... might as well combine then two
@@tekurazefirst, the Flying type inmunity exists, second, being trapped in moving sand is not the same as having your shadow locked in place
The reason for thr two abilities imbeing different is more obvious if you look at Arena Trap's japanese name: Antlion.
Emergency exit should’ve been a combo of whimp out and regenerator. Basically you swap out automatically if your health is below 50 but when you swap back in you have 25-30% health more just like regenerator. Would made more sense and made golisopod somewhat better.
Regenerator is one of the best abilities in competitive, so tacking it onto a free switch that it reloads can be overpowered, even if it doesn't work on a regular switch.
It's hard to figure any specifics but only 21% regeneration turns an attacking kingambit (max attack, max overlord, kowtow cleave) from a 2HKO to a 3HKO unless it uses a weaker move first.
@@thekoifishcoyote8762 maybe they can make the whole ability once per battle like zacian's ability. Which is pretty balanced specially considering golisopod's speed, heck considering golisopod's speed what I suggested earlier is balanced cz it loses a turn of attacking when switching out.
@@aliabbasi7497it would be pretty funny to keep getting golisopod to half hp just for it to switch out and heal, then switch and heal again next time
@@squirtleislife1312 ikr XD
I'd prefer if they made it so that Emergency Exit would only trigger at the end of the turn, so that Golisopod wouldn't lose its turn from being hit if it's slower than the opponent.
Compound Eyes and Super Luck have the same overworld effects in the later games that they up your chances in encountering wild Pokémon with a held item.
There's an unimplemented ability in Gen 3 called Cacophony, which is a clone of Soundproof, seemingly reskinned as a Pokemon being too loud to notice opposing sound moves
That would be an amazing name for a non-exclusive ability that boosts sound-based move damage, like Sharpness and Mega Launcher.
@@jaredparks4713 There is an ability called Punk Rock that has that effect, I think only Toxtricity gets it though
2:00 Mold Breaker, Teravolt and Turboblaze all ignore Disguise.
Yeah they all work the same. Was pointing out what the ability was doing in case people didn’t realize
I think Disguise was one of a kind until Eiscue came along with ice face
@@Wildfire9002 although ice face still works a bit differently because it can only protect against physical attacks but can be replenished during snow/hail
Battle Armor & Shell Armor
Keen Eye and Illuminate do the same thing now
Plus and Minus also work the same as of Gen 5. Theres also Solid Rock, Prism Armor and Filter, Lingering Aroma and Mummy.
Not necessarily same abilities, but there are a few cases of "upgraded" abilities like Thick Fat protecting from Fire and Ice while Heatproof only protects from Fire or Water Bubble compared to Water Veil and Magma Armor not only protects against burns but also gives Water moves an increased power boost.
Purifying salt is like immunity, insomnia, limber and water veil together! And also resistance to ghost moves for some reason... 🤔
Salt is oftentimes used to protect from evil in various religions and cultures!
As far as i can tell based off of the Gen 3 decompilations, no such thing exists for Huge Power being nerfed in any sort of way and is handled functionally the same as Pure Power, and no "source" ever mentioning the Huge Power difference ever mentions that it is not actually a thing in the Gen 3 games at all, so it's more than likely a weird rumor or speculation for why there are two abilities for such a thing rather than an actual thing in the Pokemon games
I've also never heard of it in any capacity, I would expect it's a weird rumour. Would be nice for someone to confirm just in caae though.
I believe there is no difference it’s just weird there were a bunch of different places talking about it.
But that’s how rumours spread. Showdown didn’t have it implemented either so I doubt there’s a difference since the abilities been around long enough.
I believe Vital spirit has an overworld effect making it slightly different from Insomnia. If the mon is 1st in the party, you encouter higher level Pokemon in the wild. Not 100% sure but I think it works that way
shared overworld effect with pressure and hustle
Everyone clown on Delibird for having both Insomnia and Vital Spirit, but nobody talks about the Klink line having both Plus and Minus.
Well to be fair, there are some mons that have just plus or minus in thier line so it's possible to want one over the other on klink line. The best use would be with the amphros line as they only get plus, or manectric which only gets minus. And ofc klinklang gets both magnetic flux and gear up allowing it to boost an amphros or manectric before it Megas.
All in theory of course because it honestly still isn't that worth it to use any of these mons in most format.
I remember when full metal body was released some poke-tubers theorized that it could prevent all negative effects so Solgaleo, in theory, could use super power with no draw back. Sadly it was literally just clear body 😅
It’s slightly better clear body isn’t it? I thought it couldn’t be bypassed by anything like moldbreaker
Yeah slightly better for those rare scenarios. It works more like the clear amulet item.
No, not "literally".
@@Gnarfledarf if it's the same thing in 99.9% of situations then I'm saying literally.
No, because that's not what that word means. Even if the effects were 100% identical, it would still not be "literally" the same, as the Abilities have different names and distributions.@@ArlecchinoAKAFather
Insomnia should let you sleep yourself, but wake up a turn early so that its distinct from both Early Bird and Vital Spirit. Maybe have it wake up on the second turn it was asleep, even if it's not on the field so that way it isn't a sitting duck
Vital spirit should do what your inomnia does but isomnia should be a 100% sleep immunity as insomnia prevents sleep in real life.
Nah, Early Bird or Vital Spirit should make you wake up earlier, insomnia in real life stops sleep period
Both could give a different stat boost when put to sleep by another mon. Insomnia could raise Defense while Vital Spirit raises Attack. With a text like "Vigoroth's Vital Spirit prevented it from falling asleep! It got motivated!"
Or vital spirit pokemon do 50%-100% more damage on their first attack when they wake up (or it could also buff snore/sleep talk)
Insomnia should just be a Sweet Veil copy instead. Vital Spirit would be really cool if it prevented recharge.
In some later gens, it seems like a lot of random fodder abilities got “immune to intimidate” slapped on. This does actually differentiate vital spirit from insomnia, making it just the better one.
Vital Spirit wasn’t one of the abilities that recieved that buff. They can still be intimidated.
Tera Shell is functionally idential to multiscale only it procs on every effect of a multihit move, an interesting sidegrade to shadow shield
There is the difference that Multiscale will make a super-effective move deal neutral damage (such as a Rock move on a Dragonite), while Tera Shell will make it deal not-very-effective damage (as in a Fighting move on Terapagos).
Actually, although they may seem similar, Multiscale just halves the damage without changing type effectiveness, while Tera Shell actually changes the effectiveness. This matters when taking type-reducing berries into account, because that means that while a Dragonite with a Yache Berry will also use the berry at the same time as its ability activates if it has fully HP, but Terapagos etith full HP won't use its Cholpe Berry if hit with a fighting attack, and can save it for the second hit.
This is better.
insomnia and vital spirit used to be different since vital spirit also increase the chance of high level random encounter, which are no longer a hing in scarlet and violet
bro finding multiple possible erros in showdown in one video. Peak cinena
I think the one about Huge Power might be correct.
The Lingering Aroma one I think might be a bug though.
Theres actually a pretty fun and niche doubles strat with Passimian that i like to dabble in. Weakness policy receiver Pacimian with a misty explosion scarf azumarill. Jolly nature and 0 spatk ivs so the move only does around 30. Scarf too to make it faster than Passimian, then passimian has +2 attack and huge power as well, and then you could just click drain punch immediately after and get all the hp right back. That with tailwind and follow me support goes crazy. I personally like booster speed Moon for tailwind and friend guard Clefairy for follow me and heal pulse support. I dont do 252 attack and invest a little in his bulk but in one turn he goes from 324 attack to 1296 and just starts nuking everybody.
I can't wait for the similar abilities vid
Plus and Minus work exactly the same too
Vital spirit: I dont need no sleep.
Insomnia: Oh god. Please. LET ME SLEEP.
Teravolt and Turboblaze should ignore abilities that are immune to being ignored by moldbreaker like full metal body.
Apparently there IS a small difference between Insomnia and Vital Spirit. If you walk around outside of battle with a Pokémon with Vital Spirit in your first slot, it'll attract higher level Pokémon.
Queenly majesty is slightly different, as it prevents allies from using priority moves as well
I haven’t tested this but I checked many sources and none of them say this affects allies?
@@MattBudYT i don't have any evidence but i'm sure i've seen this happen in gameplay. it's possible that the ally targeted tsareena and that's why it was blocked but im not sure
You should make a video of habilities that are almost the same BUT put a meme of "I'm you but better" in the thumbnail! :D
Pokemon moves that are different but have the same effect.
I want Skill Swap Huge Power Regigigas to be meta. 920 attack Stat is pretty nuts ngllllll
I think the reason delibird has vital spirit and insomnia is a play on the idea that santa claus watches you when you're sleeping and knows when you're awake as well as how santa cant sleep on Christmas to deliver gifts
I could've sworn that Power of Alchemy worked in singles if you sent your muk out after your pokemon fainted, but no, I just looked it up, it has never worked like that apparently lmao. I'm not sure where I got that idea from
1:57 What i’d do differently for Teravolt is make it so Electric-type attacks can hit Ground-type Pokemon
only if Pikachu then also gets access to it, so that the anime actually makes sense. :v
4:12 am i the only person who realized Cofagrigus got hit by a normal type move?
Someone else said it's probably a Ring Target.
A video on parallel abilities could be cool.
Overgrow/Blaze/Torrent
Flame Body/Static/Poison Point/Effect Spore
Natural Cure/Regenerator
Drought/Drizzle/Sand Stream/Snow Warning
Chlorophyll/Swift Swim/Sand Rush/Slush Rush
Electric Surge/Psychic Surge/Grassy Surge/Misty Surge
Tinted Lens/Solid Rock (or is that’s just me)
Volt Absorb/Water Absorb/Earth Eater
Lightning Rod/Storm Drain
Rock Head/Reckless
Bulletproof/Soundproof
Sheer Force/Shield Dust/Serene Grace
Iron Fist/Strong Jaw/Sharpness/Mega Launcher/Tough Claws (that last one may be a stretch)
Maybe I'm missing something, but, how did Oinkolonge use Tackle on Cofagrigus? (4:20)
Ring Target😂
idk if they learn the move, but odeur sleuth would work too
Let's go. Was waiting for it for a long time :D
The reason that Delibird has vital spirit and insomnia is that it is based on Santa, and Santa stays up all night delivering presents
At this point, Pokemon should put a little more work into differentiating abilities. For example, White Smoke can prevent self inflicted stat drops if the move used was a Fire Type. Clear Body can prevent the stat drops from status conditions(paralysis or burn).
Plus and Minus. If they only worked with the other, they wouldn't be identical, but since Plus can work with Plus and Minus can work with Minus, they're identical.
That pissed me off when I read they changed it to be like that. Made them make less sense, and also giving them to more Pokémon. I also just don't like signature moves/abilities becoming designaturified in general, but this case isn't even just that.
All legendaries need their abilities revamped. Pressure or copies of abilities on normal mons (Even though the cooler names trick you into thinking they're special) is just too lame.
That did happen with hidden abilities in gen 5 and the light trio's abilities are fine, so what if they are shared with other pokemon the abilities are great Ho-Oh would be bad without regenerator
Xerneas - Fairy Aura
Yveltal - Dark Aura
Zygarde - Power Construct
Zacian - Intrepid Sword
Zamazenta - Dauntless Shield
Urshifu - Unseen Fist
Wo-Chien - Tablets of Ruin
Chien-Pao - Swords of Ruin
Ting-Lu - Vessel of Ruin
Chi-Yu - Beads of Ruin
So what you’re saying is you want every legendary to have a usually broken signature ability?
@@DJ-0Dialga and Palkia's HA is Telepathy, kinda shitty for the embodiments of time and space
@@goGothitaLOL Sure, why not? They're supposed to be legendary
How about covering power creep in abilities? For example; strong jaw, tough claws and iron fists boost certain physical moves. Pure/huge power just gives twice the power, regardless of category physical move. Rock head is the worse version of magic guard, arena trap is worse than shadow tag since it can't trap flying/levitating targets, clear body does what big pecks does.. only better, etc.
Great idea. Added it to the video idea list!
Steely Spirit and Steeleorker are also this. But as Signatures of Galarian Meowth line & Dhelmise
Steely Spirit boosts steel moves for allies too, making it slightly better
Turboblaze gives a boost the zekrom's fusion bolt, and teravolt with reshiram's fusion flare. I don't remember the exact percentages, but I think they're either a 50% or double damage boost
It does not. If the two moves are used together they get a boost though.
@@MattBudYT oh, ok, thanks for correcting me
Turboblaze and Teravolt only work with fire and electric type moves respectively.
It essentially allows you to bypass flash fire or lightning rod and that's it, they're not even clones of mold breaker, they're straight out downgrades. (At least in gen. 5, don't know if they changed it afterwards)
I don’t know where you’re getting this information but they have always ignored all ignorable abilities.
@@MattBudYT is that so? I'll have to check again. I distinctly remember trying to use Reshiram to KO 'mons with sturdy and not being able to in BW, but maybe I'm mistaken.
goey compliments wugtrio's tripple dive
It doesn’t lower their speed when Wugtrio hits them. Only when Wugtrio gets hit by a contact move.
Minds eye is like scrappy and keen eye
The coffin is my favorite mon. That’s all thanks.
Delibirds adorable
Orcalicim Pulse = Drought
Hadron Engine = Electric Surge
I'd say intrepid sword and fire ogrepon when it terras. Although it requires terra, it meets the requirement of the video
Embody aspect for hearthflame and cornerstone = intrepid sword and dauntless shield respectively
There are some small differences. Largest difference is that Intrepid Sword can only trigger once per battle
Wandering Spirit is another clone of mummy and lingering aroma, only for Galarian Yamask’s line
they're not the same, Wandering Spirit swaps the abilities of you and the target while Mummy just replaces it.
Meanwhile you have RKS-system. Which exists to specifically copy Arceus's ability of multi-type. Just with a different set of held items.
The only difference I could find mechanically, is that if a ditto turns into either Arceus/Silvally, and is also holding a plate/memory. Then it will change its type to match its own held item with multi-type. But not with RKS-system.
But that could be wrong, as I can only infer this behavior from the bulbapedia page omitting that detail. (Unlike the multi-type page which does mention that specific scenario.)
And the RKS-system page also omits that memories can't be stolen or otherwise removed. Unlike the multi-type page and the pages for those moves.
There is also Wandering Spirit which are very similar to Mummy and Lingering aromua
Only having Galarian Yamask and Runerigus knowing it
Which there almost the same
Wandering Spirit swaps your ability with the other instead of just removing it like Mummy does.
@@TheMistermastermario yea but it could be good for his video where he says all the abillty that is almost the same
Is Wandering Spirit on Galarian Yamask different to Mummy in some way? I thought they were the same, but I haven’t used it enough
Wandering Spirit swaps with the target's ability instead of replacing it.
@@psuedonym9999 that's right, my bad
Purifying Salt and Good as Gold are basically the same.
They both only prevent the pokemon being statused and nothing else.
Purifying Salt only prevents status conditions and also halves damage of Ghost Type moves against it.
Good as Good is a full immunity to status moves even from allies and doesn’t block status from things like secondary effects (scald burns).
@@MattBudYT Ohhhh, okay! Sorry lol
Vigoroth having Vital Spirit instead of Insomnia bothers me! It completes the story of Slaking deciding a strong work ethic is too much of a bother
How did u use tackle on cofagrigis
It was holding a Ring Target
Pure power and huge power are the most ridiculous example. It's the same f*cking thing!
It's less ridiculous in Japanese.
what about wandering spirit for mummy and lingering aroma
Wandering Spirit is closer to skill swap. It swaps abilities with an attacker making contact instead of just replacing their ability.
ohhh
What about Wandering Spirit?
Love the channel! Also think you are very handsome.
Thank you very much. I agree with the handsome part!
(You forgot to say that this is not a paid comment)
@@MattBudYT Does that mean I am not getting paid now?
Does any one know a pokemon game on a NDs that actually have Zeraora poayable??

Another difference between Huge Power and Pure Power is When using Skill Swap on a Pokemon it only gives that Pokemon 50% instead of double. Pure Power does not have that decrease.
👍
why doesnt teravolt go through disguise
All the mold breaker like abilities do
What about Color Change?
What ability is the same?
Protean and Libero
@@VolcanVanis color change works differently. When the mon with the ability gets hit by an attack it will change its type to match the type of that move.
Queenly majesty, armour tail and dazzling aren't same, dazzling does not protect allies from priority like armour tail does
It does protect allies. At least according to every website I checked. Not sure if it did when introduced but it does now.

Close. Soul Heart raises Special Attack every time any other Pokémon faints. Grim Neigh you have to directly get the KO.
Would go in a sequel of close abilities
@@MattBudYT Please make a sequel if you have trouble finding video ideas or if you want to!
Teravolt and Turboblaze are actually not the same as Mold Breaker, there's a few specific scenarios where Mold Breaker won't activate but the others do
So technically they would fall in line with the "upgraded abilities" category
Could you tell me any of those scenarios?
Time to clean out the closet.
Why do you purposely slow down your talking speed?
I certainly do not do this.
Maybe sometimes I talk faster at points to get through the line before I run outta breath though😅
@@MattBudYT Gotcha!
Good as gold and magic bounce are very similar
Good as Gold affects all status moves, Magic Bounce bounces back only certain ones.
8:30 these 2 actually work differently. If cinderace uses pyro ball or any other fire type move it doesn't waste the libero of the switch in
Same would apply to Protean Kecleon using a normal type move too. They work the same way
So I assume Greninja only changes type because it's naturally a dual type?
Good but please this music is distracting and annoying
Thanks. I will try to get the volumes a little better for Phone speakers.
The music always sounds so low on my computer speakers so I never know how low to go.
Iron Barbs is more chip than Rough Skin. It hurts more so it's a better Ability.
They do the same. 1/8th.
Gen 8 intrepid sword and ogerpon-h embody aspect, minds eye and scrappy,
Ogerpon has to Tera to get the Embody Aspect boost, so it's different (she'll lose it in the next gen)
And also, Mind's Eye is Scrappy AND some other things
Google "Pokemon Scrappy"...like actually google it instead of just saying shit
similar but not identical
